Oh and haven't all of you heard? Lleyton caused Kim to injure her ankle too, that silly engagment ring just dragged her down. :p *sigh* If only Flip or St Pat were there to heal her.
Hey all :bigwave:

Angele

During some match when Jelly had to pull out, Kim went to check on her. Jelly was already in her chair, though, so presumably she'd just officially forfeited.
I remember that because that moment gave us a great picture of the L necklace!

I remember Seles going to someone (Rippner, maybe?) with her own jacket and water once too. It's certainly sweet and I have no prob with it. But it's not the norm, or probably what the tournament expects or even wants players to do, so to criticise someone for not doing it is, well, desperate, frankly!

Now if he'd been out in the centre doing Victory signs to the crowd or signing autographs to pass the time, I could see a problem.

I agree with that. I think if you're losing you wouldn't want the person who's beating you in your face to see if you're alright. And if you're winning, it might seem like the person is there hoping you're going to pull out :o

It's one of those things that makes the fans go aww...isn't that nice, but if I were the injured player, I wouldn't particularly appreciate. Maybe if they inquire about my health afterwards--not in front of thousands of people--that might be nice.:)

One thing I've also never liked is winners who want to kiss you. I realize it's traditional or european or something, but after a loss, I don't feel particularly like having the winner plant a kiss on me.

I sound so sour...:o I've had a bad day. At least my hockey team is winning.:D

I think if some players do it, like Kim or Monica, even Lindsay, it could be classified as sweet because they are sweet people. However I don't think anybody who just twisted their ankle really badly would want Serena in their faces asking if they're ok :o

You missed a funny moment, though. Everything during the SotU is always really supportive and partisan. They'd just done another Standing O, and I was thinking "I know there are Democrats here. If they don't agree, why don't stay seating, or just not clap?"

Then Bush switched to talking about the Patriot Act, which as y'all know has been pretty controversial. He said, "Some provisions of the Patriot Act expire next year--" and he was cut off because a bunch of people started applauding :haha:

Yes that crossing the net rule does exist but I've given up trying to tell people that! Apparently Lleyton crossed to Moya but I would say that a slam is always different since a penalty at a lesser tournament is not such a big deal,

Plus, you know, Moya actually fell over and was clearly badly hurt.

i think it's ok to cross when the point is over;
same thing with touching the net: you lose the point if you touch the net when the ball is still 'in play', but there's no problem is the point is over, good quality brakes are a must

Is it? I was sure that I remembered that infamous Roland Garros final between Hingis and Graf--when Hingis went over to Graf's side to show the ball mark in the clay, everyone said that she was breaking the rules...and the point was most definitely over. The commentators said she could have been disqualified for that...among other things, of course.

My memory could be wrong though.

Yes, and I'm glad that the party of friends coming over last night went pretty well, and, on further reflection, the kissing probably isn't that bad--lol. Looks like Chela/Dent was yesterday's most exciting tilt. What will today bring? and yet :hearts:

Kim's match is second--I don't know much about her opponent :o--and Lleyton takes on Kucera after that, so I think there's a good chance they'll be on, especially Lleyton. Ferrero's match will probably be fast, although I don't know that much about Volandri, and I expect Kim's match will be pretty fast too.:)

I think the kissing is to Europe what a handshake is to North America. Personally I wouldn't like to be kissed after having lost but I wouldn't see anything wrong with a handshake. So I think that's probably how most of the European players feel.

Kim's opponent is pretty low ranked, around 90 I think. Hopefully that'll be no problem for Kim. I imagine tonight ESPN will show Venus but after that, I dunno. Roger Federer is playing an American so I'm scared we're going to get that

a handshake is kind of compulsory in official tourneys whatever the level and the age group and we even have a tradition of the winner offering a drink to his opponent at the end of the match. it sometimes seems cruel but when you've a kid in tears it often helps to put things back into perspective unless there was intentional cheating during the match.

Well, this is kind of contradictory, but I like the handshake and I think it's a really nice ritual.

I sort of can see after a really arduous match--like the Roddick/El Aynaoui match--maybe a hug or something b/c both have been through such an ordeal, but if I'm a lower ranked player and just been double-bagelled by Justine, Kim, Serena or whomever, I really wouldn't want the kiss, conventional or not. I'd really want to get away.:o

I'd really want to get away.:o

i think it comes from the time (not so long ago) when tennis was essentially a socializing activity; now what i meant with cheating is that in this case you don't accept a drink from someone who obviously didn't make a mistake but cheated intentionnally.

There IS a virus going around. Greg Rusedski is in quarantine apparently. Poor Greg!:o Remember Martin Verkerk had those stomach problems or whatever and retired in the semi-final against Lleyton.

She (Justine) does seem to have something wrong with her during every important event though.:o

Yeah if this was the first time she'd ever complained about feeling ill then I might have just a little more sympathy. But after that ridiculous fuss about being on a drip and almost unable to play at the US Open then bouncing out for the final and beating Kim really easily - I don't think I'll ever believe a word she says again.

That's the thing with Justine. So many times she's complained about being sick or injured and then come out and played fine that now it's gonna be hard to ever believe her. It's like the boy who cried wolf.

Tennis is hard on the body, and most competitors play with some kind of pain.

imo, pre-grand slam champion Justine had a lot of problems with nerves/choking. Having a physical 'injury/illness' may help focus her mentally. Also, I believe she thrives on the underdog-role and the 'problem' may provide her with additional motivation.

How's that for wild speculation.;)

Personally, aside from some trash-talking :worship:, I prefer when players shut up and play.:p

The ensure that I have comes pre-mixed but you can probably have it in a mix as well. It's a meal replacement shake so it does have all the vitamins, minerals, protein etc... My doctors told me that if I had 4 servings of ensure, instant breakfast, etc... per day I'd have all the nutrients that I need :)

Anne? Are you still here

I am so sorry to be AWOL but there I was typing away and all of a sudden the server for all the computers in the internet cafe went down! I am now using the hostels internet and I have 57 minutes before I have to be off (although I can easily just go and pay more money and log on again).

How are you both?

Yup I'm watching, this is such crap :( I've pretty much given up hope of seeing Lleyton or Kim this tournament unless they're playing an American or make the semis

I've never even seen her name before :o How come you know who she is? :p

I wish, wish, wish I had access to tennis on TV. I am really craving to see some! Particularly Lleyton and Kim. Although it doesn't help that it is in the middle of the night for me! This is the one Grand Slam that suits me and here I am now in the wrong time zone  :p

No kidding  I'm betting all their coverage tonight will be of Vodafone instead of Rod Laver, cause Vodafone has the American's

Cause I'm a genius  well that and I saw her practice and play a bit in Toronto :p She wasn't bad..took Husarova to 3 sets, but she's rather small if I remember correctly and shouldn't pose much of a problem to Kim.

No, I'm fine, and I'm not intending anything to happen to me, so if it does happen again you'll know that the internet has crashed again. It is just so frustrating as the internet is my only connection to you guys and when I can't get to it it makes me feel like I'm stranded!

Well there is a TV in the hostel (in fact I'm in the TV room as we speak as that is where all the computers are as well) but the boys have the soccer on at the moment  (sorry, I'm not really a soccer fan). I have no idea if there is any tennis / if the hostel has Eurosport coverage etc.

I'm not really that much of a soccer fan either... I definetly wouldn't watch soccer if there was tennis on. I've heard some people talking ( albeit complaining :o ) about british eurosport so if you have that channel here should be tennis! I don't know if it's free to air or anything though. Perhaps the people at the hotel front desk would know if you have it?

I think most Kim fans are seriously doubting she's actually fine :p Everyone else saw her first match and was like oh she's fine..she's good for the rest of the tournament :p Commentators included

I don't really believe her either :o I was starting to believe her and then I got to that question where she talks about the fact that although she felt fine after the match it could flare up the next day  I'd like to be able to watch her play at least a set or so to be able to see how she's moving, if she's gringing when she lands on her left foot, etc...

I'm surprised I even remembered her size correctly :p ..frankly the only thing that made me take notice of her was that when I first saw her practice I didn't recognize her..and there aren't too many players I won't recognize. So I when I saw her later on playing Husarova first round and looked at the scoreboard to see who she was.

She played Davenport at the USO..Davy won 6-2,6-4 I think. So my guess would be she's speedy and maybe tries to be consistent..but I don't remember anything about her having any weapons. If she did she wouldn't be ranked so low..

Omg Chesty

Kristina Wagner will return to the role of Felicia Scorpio-Jones on the ABC Daytime drama “General Hospital,” it was announced today by Brian Frons, president, ABC Daytime. Her first air date will be March 1st.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kristina Wagner back and have Felicia return home to her family,” said Mr. Frons in making the announcement.
“There are so many faces I’m anxious to see again,” commented Kristina Wagner. “I am so excited to see the cast and crew and work with these talented individuals.”
“General Hospital” Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps said, “The upcoming main storyline of the series afforded an opportunity to bring back the core character of Felicia – the mother of Georgie and Maxie Jones – to our show. As a result, we were able to cast the role with an industry veteran who portrayed the character so deliciously in the past.”

Kristina must be seriously hurting for some money if she's coming back to crap-ass GH :p But finally, a (hopefully) decent, serious storyline for Maxie and Georgie! :D

I know....she says in the interview that she had no pain in her ankle.....liar! :p I don't belive that (unfortunately, as I don't want her to be injured). I too really would love to actually see her play. What time are their matches, I need to work out what time it will be for me here.
