It was so nice to see him play last night. He was scuttling around the court looking much more like the Ll of old than the Ll of last year. I'd be surprised if he wins, but I think he can do pretty well if he continues to play decently.

And he's got such fabulous outfits :p

Jess
01-20-2004, 09:55 PM
I would be surprised if he wins  (though I REALLY hope he does ;) ) but I don't see any reason why he can't if he keeps it together and plays at his best (and he is rapidly starting to play at his best).

Murkofan
01-20-2004, 09:59 PM
Unfortunately for both Ll and Flip, I think Rebound Ace is too slow to really be an ideal surface for either of them. Assuming they both get there, I think Nadal will give Ll a hard time.

But he'll look fabulous, win or lose :p

Definitely. Over here David Beckham is all over the papers all the time. He's famous for playing football and married to a Spice girl. He has bleached hair grown into a ponytail, eyebrows plucked, manicures, tatoos and wears ridiculously over the top diamond jewellery.

Lleyton is so gorgeous because he looks like a proper Aussie bloke! I cannot imagine him having a manicure (or even knowing what one is for that matter! )

Well if Lleyton pays any attention to Kim when she talks I'm sure he knows what a manicure is :p But I don't think we'll be seeing him at the spa anytime soon, unless it's to pick up Kim ;)

Jess
01-20-2004, 10:31 PM
Oh yes, clean looking is good - nothing wrong with a bit of aftershave etc... I'm definitely not into all that liking sweaty greasy blokes stuff that some girls go for. Clean shaven is definitely best.
But make up and excssive jewellery is going far too far.

Murkofan
01-20-2004, 10:31 PM
And shaves. My sister thinks the 5 o'clock shadow look is the just the sexiest thing ever, but I think it makes a person come off dirty and unhygenic :p

Jess
01-20-2004, 10:35 PM
Yeah I really don't get that five o clock shadow thing or the kind of "designer stubble" look some of them go for... a little goatee beardy bit is sooo not attractive. Just makes them look incrediably pretentious.
Also, I hate it when blokes wear earrings :rolleys:

Murkofan
01-20-2004, 10:40 PM
I'm not a fan of earrings on men either, but I do like long hair. Go figure :p

Angele
01-20-2004, 10:41 PM
I like clean shaven as well but if a guy absolutely wants facial hair, a little goatee is ok. No in between though. I agree on the 5 o'clock shadow, that just looks dirty :o

The only jewelry a man should wear is his wedding ring and perhaps a simple chain, like Lleyton's gold chain. At times a school/uni ring is acceptable as well but beyond that, men should leave the jewelry wearing to the women in their lives :p

Angele
01-20-2004, 10:41 PM

Jess

Or the kind of overgrown look of the French Open? I prefer short but not bald myself.

Angele
01-20-2004, 10:43 PM
As a general rule, I don't like long hair on a guy :p

Murkofan
01-20-2004, 10:45 PM
If a guy's hair is longer than mine, it's too long :p At its longest, my hair usually reaches the bottom of my shoulder blades.

Jess
01-20-2004, 10:50 PM
Yea hair longer than mine (and mine is about at my shoulders) would be automatically far too long. :p - thankfully my boyfriend has sensibly short hair and I hope would not take leave of his senses and attempt to grow it ;)

Angele
01-20-2004, 10:50 PM

Wie likely to turn down invitation

Associated Press

1/20/2004

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michelle Wie will be invited to play in another PGA Tour event but will probably decline because it conflicts with a tournament where she's the defending champion.

The Booz Allen Classic will soon offer the 14-year-old sensation an invitation to play on a sponsor's exemption, said Michael Myers, senior vice-president of Kemper Sports, which runs the tournament in Potomac, Md.

Wie missed the cut by one stroke last weekend at the Sony Open in Hawaii, her first PGA Tour event. The Booz Allen Classic is one of several tournaments expected to offer her a chance to try again.

But the timing is bad. The Booz Allen is June 24-27, which conflicts with the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Williamsburg, Va. Wie won the event last year, becoming the youngest champion of a USGA tournament for adults.

``Her intention is she wants to defend,'' Wie's father, B.J. Wie, said Tuesday.

B.J. Wie said no one from Booz Allen has contacted him. Asked about other prospective offers, he said: ``We wouldn't rush into anything. The PGA Tour has the best players in the world. And she's still young.''

The Booz Allen Classic, known for decades as the Kemper Open before a couple of sponsorship changes, rarely attracts many marquee players. In past years it was promoted as a warmup to the U.S. Open, but this year's tournament will take place one week after the Open, a tougher spot on the PGA Tour calendar.

I think right now the best thing she can do is just get through her matches. Her early slam matches are always a little error filled anyway and at this slam, on top of the ankle injury, she's also rusty.

Jess
01-20-2004, 11:18 PM
Yeah, I reckon its just good she got out there and played and seemed to win reasonably easily without it going on too long or ruining the ankle.

Just reading back a bit, I'm not so sure Nadal would beat Lleyton right now. In a few years, I think they'll all be chasing Nadal but right now he's pretty young and I'm not sure how his mental consistency would stand up in a grand slam, best-of-5 against someone with a lot of experience.

On the other hand, if that match happens it will certainly be a doozy and eithet player could win.

But for now, I just want Ll to beat Kucera (and for Kucera not to get injured. I guess I should be flattered at all the people crediting Ll with supernatural ability but it's getting a little tired!)

Angele
01-20-2004, 11:41 PM
A lot of women's matches are really one sided early on in the slams :( I'm not sure if it's because the women's field isn't very deep or if it's because the women's style of play allows for more one sided matches. On the men's side even the lower ranked players have got a hard serve and can manage to hold serve a couple of times in a match where they are clearly out-classed but that's not the case on the women's side.

Lisbeth
01-20-2004, 11:41 PM
Yes men's tennis is great right now. There's maybe 40 unseeded players capable of big upsets.

Serra Zanetti putting up a fight now! Kuznetsova's never been the same since she stopped playing doubles with Martina Nav.

Escude up on Soderling. He (Nicolas) could be dangerous if he cuts down on the cigarettes. He gave Agassi all he could handle for most of their match last year.

Edit: Fight, Sam! I like Aniko, but this is the Aus. Open after all.:)

Lisbeth
01-20-2004, 11:45 PM
Sadly I think it's just lack of depth in the women. Though 5-setters certainly open up a new range of considerations eg a lower ranked player can achieve a level of fitness which makes him dangerous after the first hour if a top player hasn't bothered to condition properly.

Murkofan
01-20-2004, 11:45 PM
He smokes? What an ass.

I was actually being facetious regarding the men so far. The top players, with the exception of Coria whom I believe was fighting a niggling injury, had uncharacteristically easy 1st round matches.

Hi back to Busty :wavey:

I've never seen him with a cig firsthand, so I am basically repeating gossip, although he is easy to imagine as a smoker. I can sort of see him with a tennis racquet in one hand and a cigarette in the other. It would have given the DuMaurier championships a whole new level of sponsorship.

Kim saves the honour for Belgium 20-01-2004

The Belgian men might have let their country down a bit :o, but Kim Clijsters proved her sense of responsibility and easily beat the German Weingartner in the first round.

Clijsters opened against Marlene Weingartner, who beat title holder Capriati last year in the first round. Kim prevented her from doing the same.

Kim struggled a bit only in the very beginning, when the German proved tough enough to return virtually everything. Kim remained in charge throughout and proved that she was both in shape for a 100%.

With an early break Kim decided the first set (6-3), in the second set Clijsters even made it into 4-0. Weingartner relived shortly, but Kim stayed on focus and finished with 6-2.

In the second round Kim will meet the Italian Camerin.

'Injury didn't hinder me at all, surprised about my game'

Obviously, Kim Clijsters was highly satisfied after her match. 'The injury didn't hinder me at all, that was the most important thing. If this was a test, then I'm happy I'm back on the court again and able to play tennis.'

'I was surprised about the level of my game as well as I immediately caught the proper rhythm and could hit the ball quite well. My movements weren't perfect yet, but this really is all I could hope for for today', Kim decided.

Edit: What the score of Xavier's match. Such a disappointment.

I was just searching for articles about Jaslyn on google and I found this :

Jaslyn's brother, Lleyton, has been nominated for membership of the exclusive Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne.

The Australian tennis hero was nominated for Kingston Heath when he indicated to friends that he was on a long waiting list at Royal Adelaide.

Hewitt, 22, can be fast-tracked at Kingston Heath because he is under 25 and the club has a policy of encouraging younger golfers.

Hewitt plays off an eight handi cap -- and doesn't wear his hat backwards, as he does on court.

Hi, I'm back! Frick I hate clients.

Any tennis news from the last hour or so I should know about.

It's weird though what happened... it's hard to tell exactly where he hit his foot

It looked to me as if his foot went under the bar at the bottom of the chair and he tried to move his body and the foot got caught. Hard to tell because the camera was nearly fully panned away for a cross-court shot of Ll.

Actually I've done something similar before..my door which is extremely heavy caught the top of my foot. It's was incrediably painful and left a huge black/blue bruise :o I almost couldn't walk on it :( I'm assuming Mamiit did something similar..thus the great pain.

Oh my hell I am watching a super hilarious Five "When the Lights Go Out" video that has Bethany Joie Lenz from One Tree Hill in it. Bwahahaha! I miss Five, Abs was hot. :look:

He didn't hurt himself. He just wanted off that court.

I also think he was dramatizing a bit.:o Sometimes when lower ranked players get a match in front of 10,000 people or so, they go a bit crazy. They aren't used to it. I've never seen anyone run into the umpire chair like that before.:o

omg when Randy and Simon were nearly falling out of their chairs pissing themselves laughing at that Kosovo guy and Paula was just like 'look ahead, smile, nod encouragingly.' :rolls:
I must have been upstairs during that one

But this show is so great :haha:

Well according to various GM posters, apart from hexing the guy, Ll smirked at his discomfort before failing to provide first aid.

:wavey: Jane

I am feeling the client-hate.:D

Guga took the first set against Ljubicic.:D

As for the smirk...you know, he didn't even see that he was hurt b/c as I said he did not hit the pavement immediately, but JOGGED to the middle of the court and dropped. Lleyton hit a beautiful shot...I did more than smirk.

Anyway, you're not supposed to cross the net to the opponent's side--it's a penalty, I think. The trainers should have got their sooner, but they were probably as confused as everyone was. It's only hindsight (with lots of feverish hate-fantasy) that creates this version of events.

Are you serious? :rolls: Sure. Why not. That email address would never be revealed to any of my friends, except my other tennis obsessive friend.

Hehehehe! God this night just gets funnier and funnier. Damnit Lleyton stop hexing people! :p

Today Simon was on Extra or one of those shows being interviewed by his girlfriend, Terri something or other. She asked him about this season and asked what he did to try and stop laughing. He said I think of puppies drowning... or kittens. Heck I even dream about you drowning :p

I don't think Mamiit was faking or anything, but I reckon a stubbed toe would feel a whole lot worse after a few rounds with Lleyton. Poor guy was probably already exhausted.

You realize, of course, that Ll purposely put side and backspin on the ball in order to draw Mamiit in towards the strategically placed umpire's chair. After Mamiit decided to go for it, there was really no other possible outcome than a grevious injury.

Angele

Did people really expect Lleyton to run over and help the guy? If he had done that people would accuse him of wanting to rub it in the guy's face that he was winning  What could Lleyton of done anyway? Held his hand? :p

I don't think it was a planned thing. I think something hurt, for sure. I also think he was dramatizing. As I said, most players of that rank aren't used to playing a match in front of that many people. It's intimidating and they can react strangely...she says as Agassi bagels Berdych.

I'd place a wager that nothing is torn, broken, seriously sprained etc.

Oh god Abs has gone solo and while I was in England I bought his new single Miss Perfect. It's actually a really good song and he's so much hotter now, the video for that song is just woo!

Yes that crossing the net rule does exist but I've given up trying to tell people that! Apparently Lleyton crossed to Moya but I would say that a slam is always different since a penalty at a lesser tournament is not such a big deal,

Plus, you know, Moya actually fell over and was clearly badly hurt.

I agree--Moya was in a lot of pain, and there's no way he would have given up on that match--or the Open for that matter--if he wasn't.

Actually the women do tend to do that..if it's a serious injury they'll come over. Sharapova did it in Quebec City..it was cute  At the very least they'll come to net and ask if you're alright lol :p

I'm not sure he did, that's just what folks are saying. I think he might have kind of gone to near the umpire's chair and sort of watched to see what was happening, then sat down when it was clear that Moya has 20 officials and a trainer assisting him.

I don't know...if I'm writhing around, I want the trainer, not some teenage punk asking me if I'm alright. Of course, I'm not alright! Hence the writhing, screeching etc.:p

During some match when Jelly had to pull out, Kim went to check on her. Jelly was already in her chair, though, so presumably she'd just officially forfeited.

I agree with that. I think if you're losing you wouldn't want the person who's beating you in your face to see if you're alright. And if you're winning, it might seem like the person is there hoping you're going to pull out :o

Kate05
01-21-2004, 01:48 AM
Oh and haven't all of you heard? Lleyton caused Kim to injure her ankle too, that silly engagment ring just dragged her down. :p *sigh* If only Flip or St Pat were there to heal her.
