In any case, bulky=not my type.

What's it mean when they say right-to-left and vice-versa? Is that the cut of the grass or something? And how does it affect the shot?

It's the direction of the shot..they put spin on the ball. All players naturally hit it a certain way.

That's one thing that I've never been too sure of  I don't think it has anything to do with the grass but more so how the hole is shaped. I'm not 100% sure though. A hole that's right to left might mean a hole that starts out straight and then suddently the fairway takes a turn to the left. I'm not positive about that though.

She's not even in full tennis gear. She's got on the same pants she had at Lleyton's match and the same drop earrings, or so it seems anyway. Wie's Performance Proves She's Got 'It'

By DOUG FERGUSON, AP SPORTS

HONOLULU (Jan. 17) -- The consolation prize for 14-year-old Michelle Wie was bending over the back of a computer terminal to follow along as her father scrolled down the list of guys she beat at the Sony Open.

The ninth-grader really thought she was going to make the cut.

She was, like, totally bummed out when she learned late Friday afternoon that despite two birdies on the final three holes for a 2-under 68, she came up one shot short.

"Just one more shot and I would have made it," Wie said. "It's killing me."

Her two-day total of 140 was only enough to tie U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk and British Open champion Ben Curtis. It was one shot better than John Cook and Scott Hoch, two better than Steve Flesch, three ahead of Adam Scott.

And while she didn't get her way at Waialae, it was a performance that was simply stunning.

"She's 14 years old and she beat a lot of guys," said Craig Bowden, 35, who has been a professional one year longer than Wie has been on earth. "She's got an incredible future ahead of her."

At times, Wie looks as if the future is now.

"The LPGA has got to be chomping at the bit," Tom Lehman said Saturday morning. "She's got star power. She holds her head high. She walks like Seve (Ballesteros) used to, when he was like, 'Watch this next shot. It's going to be the greatest you ever saw."'

Wie displayed a full range of shots during her two days at Waialae, starting with her drives that put her in the top two-thirds of the field in driving distance. Three of them were longer than 300 yards.

Between clubs on the par-3 fourth, where the pin was all the way back, she went with a knockdown 3-iron to control the flight and distance, and finished pin-high, 40-feet away. When the cut was in range and the pressure at its peak late in the second round, she hit crisp, punch shots to gain more control.

Her 68 was the lowest score by a female competing against the men.

Annika Sorenstam had rounds of 71-74 at the Colonial, when she missed the cut by four shots. Suzy Whaley, the Connecticut club pro who qualified for the Greater Hartford Open playing a shorter set of tees, went 75-78 and missed the cut by 13 shots.

Three other women played on international tours, and Se Ri Pak is the only one who made the cut. She closed with a 69-71 at the SBS Super Tournament on the Korean PGA Tour and tied for 10th.

Still, the most important number at the Sony Open was Wie's age -- 14.

"It's an amazing story," Lehman said. "It's the story of the Wiiieeeek."

Lehman chuckled at his play on words. The former British Open champion is the one who nicknamed her the "Big Wiesy" two years ago during the Pro-Junior Challenge at the Sony Open, saying the swing reminded him of Ernie Els.

Two years later, Lehman is still shaking his head.

"I was talking to Jonathan Byrd last night and asked him what he was doing at 14," Lehman said. "He said, 'Snap hooking it and getting into trouble' -- just like the rest of us. She has really matured. She is strong, poised and motivated. And she's obviously incredibly talented."

Where it leads is anyone's guess.

Wie returns to school Tuesday at Punahou School, where she is on the honor roll. Her next tournament is the Safeway International (March 18-21) outside Phoenix, which traditionally attracts one of the strongest fields on the LPGA Tour. A week later, she plays in the first LPGA major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

The Sony Open will give her invaluable experience and confidence.

"I think it helps me on the LPGA, because since I played on the PGA, I think the LPGA will be easy, too," she said. "The courses are going to be a little shorter, so I'm going to have more wedges."

A year ago, Wie played in the final group at the Kraft Nabisco with Sorenstam and Patricia Meunier-LeBouc, who won the tournament. Wie shot 76 in the final round and tied for ninth. But she had a 66 in the third round by turning Mission Hills into a pitch-and-putt with her awesome length.

Tiger Woods had a 66 in the third round of a major, the 1996 British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. It was a round he later said proved to him he was ready to turn professional.

Wie isn't headed there that fast.

She still has 3 1/2 years of high school and plans to go to college. Her father met the president of Stanford over the holidays on Maui.

After that, she sees no reason why she can't play on both tours.

"I struggled and I fought," Wie said. "I made a couple of really good putts. I made two birdies out of the last three holes. I think I did pretty good.

"I think I can play out here one day."

Such a comment from someone so young would have sounded outrageous. After two days in the Sony Open, where a 14-year-old girl shot even par and tied for 80th, all bets are off.

little concerned about kim's ankle though:unsure:

Angele
01-18-2004, 09:47 PM
I'm a little concerned as well  She said she can't injure it further if she plays but she also said she wouldn't play unless she was 100% and that turned out not to be the case so who knows what's going to happen :(

Jess
01-18-2004, 09:49 PM
Hiya ;)

I guess it's good news on the Kim injury front as she must've practiced now and doesn't seem to have antagonised it again...

lilo
01-18-2004, 09:51 PM
I'm scared too she can't give a 100% and you never know with first round matches:scared:don't wanna be anywhere near gm when that happens...but why are we so negative?we should stay positive and support her! :D C'mooon kimmie,we believe in you:woohoo:!!!

Angele
01-18-2004, 09:52 PM
Hey Jess :wavey: How are ya?

Yes it's definetly good news that she's playing... the AO just wouldn't of been the same without her. I'm a little nervous though... I can't wait until she plays her first match so we can see for ourselves how she's doing!

Angele
01-18-2004, 09:54 PM
I'm probably gonna stay away from GM during AO... Everybody was really pissed off at Kim before she even announced if she was going to play or not  Sometimes I really wonder if half the board members aren't about 10 or 11 years old :o

Jess
01-18-2004, 09:56 PM
I'm okay - just about caught up with ridiculous amount of school work now :p How are you?

I guess the worst that will happen in Kim's match is that her ankle will hurt and she'll have to retire but its got to be a risk worth taking. I just hope it's all alright because I cannot stand a tournament between Ezel and Venus

Jess
01-18-2004, 09:58 PM

Angele
01-18-2004, 09:59 PM
Whatever happens, I just hope Kim doesn't really ruin her ankle :( If she loses early I'll be  but if she injures it again and can't play for months and months, it'll be much, much worse!

If Kim can't win, I hope Lindsay does. If Lindsay and Kim can't win, I hope Venus does. If neither of those three win, I hope they call off the tournament :tape:

Oh they could well be  or else they're just deliberately trying to wind people up.
If they're just trying to piss people off they should be banned  One poster, who shall remain nameless, went into about 10 threads the other night to say things like Kim ruined the draw, this is all happening because of Kim, etc... Justine and Lindsay are drawn to meet in the quarters and of course that's all Kim's fault because you know Kim is the one who rigged the draw and Kim's the one who gave the #3 seeding to Venus meaning that Lindsay is #5 and can meet seeds 1-4 in the quarters

Jess

 Definitely.... I'm not too sure about wanting Venus to win - but in the absence of anyone else and providing she beats Ezel it's not too bad and she's due some good luck... and it would be nice to see Lindsay win.
But apart from those two it leaves Ezel or Amelie and either of those would be awful

Angele
01-18-2004, 10:06 PM
Well I don't particularily like Venus but she's ok. She's never pulled anything like Justine and she's not as arrogant as Serena. The reason I'd want Venus to win more than anybody in the field except Kim and Lindsay is because a) she's not close enough to Kim in the rankings that she's going to overtake her with an AO title, especially considering she got to the finals last year so tons of points to defend and b) she already has a slam where as Amelie, Elena, etc... don't and I don't want them, or anybody else, winning their first slam before Kim!

Lisbeth

Hello Angele and Jess and anyone else that's here! Are you excited? I am!

Don't know if anyone else posted this but Ch 7 ran a 1.5 hour special yesterday which interviewed Lleyton! He seemed really relaxed and happy. One funny bit was where the interviewer asked him "so you're engaged now?" and he just said "yes" with a smirk and nothing else! But after the guy said everyone was so happy Lleyton said he guessed she was "a little bit more Aussie now" and he could see Geoff Pollard (head of Tennis Australia) trying to contain himself, LOL! Ll'd just come from the charity day and they showed pics of him playing tennis with some mentally disabled adults.

They also had El Anouyi (which I can never spell) and Roddick on together but I only listened to that from the kitchen - couldn't bring myself to watch because Roddick plonked himself down legs wide open to the camera (wearing shorts) and I was like [insert that looking askance smilie which I can't find right now]!

They also showed Kim's press conference where she announced she was playing and she looked quite hurt and confused by the comments about whether she was sure she wouldn't make the injury worse. She said she wouldn't have played if she couldn't make it through all her matches or if she would do more damage, and that she has practised 3 times and pulled up OK.

Lisbeth
01-18-2004, 10:09 PM
I think it's hilarious that all those people were saying Kim's ruined the draw and now she'd IN the draw. They were soooooo sure she'd pull out. Been watching too many Williams sisters, I guess. Ultra cute pic of Venus and her nephew I today's paper, by the way. This little 5 year old collecting balls wearing a giant ID pass!

Angele
01-18-2004, 10:14 PM
Hey Jane :wavey:

Thanks for the info  Ah that Lleyton, as gooberish as ever :p I bet the head of Tennis Australia is anxiously waiting for them to get married so Kim can really be half aussie and then maybe they can work from there lol

That doesn't sound great about Kim's press conference

Jess
01-18-2004, 10:17 PM
No it doesn't sound good but it must be difficult for her to talk about something that's obviously bothering her in front of all those people. You're not exactly going to look happy are you.

Lisbeth
01-18-2004, 10:20 PM
Also, she probably felt under attack with all those people saying "why are you playing, why aren't you having surgery?" as if they know her condition better than herself and her advisers. I thought it was nice that she held a press conference, personally.

Angele
01-18-2004, 10:20 PM
No it doesn't sound good but it must be difficult for her to talk about something that's obviously bothering her in front of all those people. You're not exactly going to look happy are you.
No I know but all reports up to know had her looking happy and upbeat which was just a great sign but if she wasn't that happy

Angele
01-18-2004, 10:22 PM
I'm sure there were a lot of nervous people in the media room before Kim came out! I agree about the press conference, I'm glad she held one. Otherwise there would of been a lot of will she, won't she until her match was actually played.

Jess
01-18-2004, 10:22 PM
She might only have looked unhappy for a bit I suppose she seemed quite upbeat in the transcript.

Angele
01-18-2004, 10:26 PM
I hope she was pretty much upbeat. Kim is always so happy and cheerful that it's quite upsetting to see her sad.

Lisbeth
01-18-2004, 10:28 PM
She didn't really look unhappy, more just sort of bewildered and cross at the particular questions. She was really positive about getting back into tennis for the season.

Jess
01-18-2004, 10:30 PM
Yeah - she's not going to want to dwell on the injury too much... or give the opponents the impression that she's not a serious contender.

Angele

Lisbeth
01-18-2004, 10:34 PM
I was more interested in the fact that LLeyton looked happy actually, indeed that he agreed to be interviewed in a non-compulsory setting, though I noticed everyone left before LLeyton came on except Bruce McAvaney (the interviewer and a very experienced Aussie sports reporter).

Lisbeth
01-18-2004, 10:39 PM
OK thanks Angele - I've got a few allergies today so I'm a bit sleepy and miserable but I'm sure some tennis scores later will perk me up no end! Glad to hear you continue to feel better. The anaesthetic is probably out of your system now which is sure to help.

Angele

What exactly was the setting for the interviews? I know different people were interviewed so was it a talk show type thing or just a lot of pre-taped, but very recent, interviews?

Jess
01-18-2004, 10:42 PM
Yeah good to hear Lleyton being interviwed sounding both cheerful and not as though he'd rather be just about anywhere else :p
Sometimes it's not surprising he gets annoyed with the journalists though because they do ask him some totally ridiculous questions that are absolutely none of their business!

Angele
01-18-2004, 10:42 PM

That's annoying about the allergies :( Hopefully they won't bother you all day and you'll get the tennis results that you're hoping for :)

Now really the only thing keeping me from feeling fine is the swelling. The last few days especially I feel better... more energy, a better appetite. The swelling is still giving me headaches and making my head feeling heavy but hopefully that'll be gone soon!

It was like a panel on a stage at what seemed to be a giant dinner party (or maybe lunch - they showed it at 1pm). The panel was McNamee and John Alexander and Bruce and Martina Hingis - and (go figure!) Cliff Richard for a while!! But they all left, the Lleyton came on, then he left and Roddick and El Anouiy came on. Kim's was separate and looked like an official Aus Open press room of some sort.

Angele
01-18-2004, 10:44 PM
Speaking of ridiculous interview questions, did you guys see that video interview of Kim at the AO site? They asked her something about being familiar with the hotel in Melbourne and Kim, being as gracious as she, didn't even flinch :o She was more than happy to say that yes she did indeed like and feel familiar with her hotel in Melbourne lol

oh and I like Gonzalez too. I like that whole entertaining/frustrating dynamic.
Agreed :D I'm alawys shouting at him when he's on TV  One moment he's down and out, the next he's playing amazing tennis. But, a poor season by his standards last years after his breakthrough season in 2002 :( But, then again it was a poor season for many of my faves last year

Was Guccione once a hitting partner for Kim? Possibly around the time of the Davis Cup semi? I'm sure I remember reading that somewhere

Nico :) Another of tennis' great underacheivers :( And, Todd Reid! :) I wonder if Todd Larkham will get whooped by Agassi as comprehenisvely as Lleyton dismissed him last year :o I think (If my memory is right) that Lleyton won 6-1, 6-0, 6-1??

Elena...Jankovic is serbian, right? I remember hearing she was pretty good, but still...:(

Yeah, the night match shouldn't be too pretty. Let's hope Larkham keeps it respectable so his brother doesn't have to beat up John MacEnroe like he threatened last year.:p

Yes, I don't understand all these strapping-looking young women with their wimpy serves, but she really has a lot of ability. I remember her from last year's U.S. Open, and then she had some kind of famous upset over JHH, didn't she?

Petrova's overrated, I think. I can't believe Mary Carillo comparing her to Martina Hingis. I really like Mary, but please...

Yep, as QG said. And, she served for the first set set twice against JHH at the USO last year, and once again her serve let her down :( JHH won that set 7-5 I believe.

I think so too. I just can't warm to her, and to compare her with Hingis is crazy.
