Does anyone have Enqvist matches they'd like to share via bittorrent or whatever? Youtube is kinda disappointing, it only has the Sampras-Enqvist Philly match from 98 and a couple crappy highlights...

Hi all:
I'm Elena, from Valencia, Spain. Some of you may know me by the former page of Valérie dedicated to Thomas, but it's the first time I post in this forum, even if I've been reading it for a long time. I also miss Thomas a lot, but I'm happy to think that he now has a new life and I hope he is very happy. Does any of you know anything about the baby he was expecting? Is it a girl or a boy? I hope everything was fine for them.
I was thinking that maybe we could start some discussion in here about things of the past of Thomas. Maybe we could comment special matches of his career or ask questions about any doubt. In particular, there's something I've always wanted to ask and never remember. Many of you may know the picture I attach, but I've never heard an explanation of it. Many years ago, even before I had the internet at home, a friend of mine told me when he heard that I liked Thomas Enqvist "oh, yeah, did you see when he went on court with his dog?" and I thought he was mad, hehe, but then I saw this pic...So if any of you remembers this moment and could explain it, it would be great.
Well, thank you in advance.
Elena

that picture is from the RCA Tennis Championships in Indianapolis. this picture is from the year that he won the tournament. the winner takes pictures with the "RCA Dogs" whose names are kipper and chipper (or something like that). they're the mascots of the RCA company. so those aren't Tompa's dogs, but the RCA dogs. =)

On the first pic, the kid is the winner of the tournament of Puy Ste Reparade. This city is in Provence, near Aix en Provence I think. And, on the second pic, it's the finalist. Thomas' nickname : Nesquick. Funny

I think Thomas has been invited to give the trophee. That's nice :) I think Thomas someday will coach the children, he seems to like them a lot.

Sportfond målet i ny karriär

Merci Celitae :)

About the article, here's what I understood. Enqvistangel and Sommarsverige will translate it better than me :) I don't practrice my swedish a lot since Thomas retired :(

He won three times the Stockholm Open (1995,1996,1999). He retired two years ago after 15 years as a professional player. He lives in Aix En Provence with the fresh air and the light, far from the big cars of Monte-Carlo.

Apparently, he has a contract with the Stockholm Open again this year and then he'll start a new carrier.

He started as en expert commentator for Viasat (http://www.viasat.se/). Moreover, he plans together with a financial man to start a "sportfond" which will be for the sportsmen and for the ones who will soon stop. They have been in contact with a investissment company which invests money.

I think he also talked about the investment of his money during his career. He said that he has always been interested by stock exchange.

It mentionned he has a child (if I remember well he said he became dad in few months (around feb-mars) during last Stockholm open).;)

Personal translation :

Enqvist starts as a commentator

He was one of the worlds best. Today, Thomas Enqvist makes his debut. 33, as a commentator for the channel Viasat Sport.

"I'm nervous. But, it will be cool", Thomas Enqvist says.

He was world number 4 and won 19 ATP Titles before that in 2005, he was forced to stop due to an injury.

After 17 years, he has wandered over 100th ranking in the world, Thomas Enqvist was forced to stop 2 years ago, and retired.

Now, he has found a new job. He's an expert commentator for Viasat Sport.

"I thought it was cool that Viasat Sport bet on tennis. It's a wonderful sport to watch on tv", Thomas Enqvist says to Viasatsport.se

Thomas Enqvist will start his career as a commentator during the quarter final in Madrid. He'll start with the match between the Serbian Novak Djokovic and the Croatian Mario Ancic. Thomas will be helped by the commentator Peter Bengtsson.

"I'm lucky that he was with me. I was a little nervous"

What led you to become commentator ?
"I have played myself and played against most of the players who are today on the ATP Tour. Which facilitates naturally. I can comment with analyses and see all from the player's side."

Are you nervous ?
"I was a little, but most of the time, I analyse then, I'll be pro"

Do you have a favourite player ?
"Roger Federer. He can above all show every time new things on court.

Have you ever met him ?
"Yes, and I have positive statistics. 3-1. But it was when he started his carreer. But at this period, we noticed that he would become a top player.

Hi there, how are you? Do you know where is Thomas staying in Spain and how long will he be here?? I think he was going to Ferrero tennis academy. I'm very interested to know, cause maybe I have the chance to go and see him...or maybe he's coming with his pupils to the tournament of Valencia, which started today. I hope you all are doing fine, let me know please if you have any information.

Elena : I don't know where, but once they talked about JCF's academy, so maybe they are there. You should try to go there if you have the opportunity, you never know maybe you'll have a good surprise :)

I'll try to search more later and I'll let you know.

Hi, thank you for the answer, I was surfing the net yesterday later and discovered that he was at JCF academy until yesterday!! It's a pity, because if I had found out earlier, I would have gone to see him...even if it is at 120 km from my city. You can find a little note in www.equelite.com, "Noticias generales".

NEW YORK, September 23, 2008 – InsideOut Sports & Entertainment today announced that Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist and the Czech Republic’s Karel Novacek will be added to the field at the 2008 Citadel Group Championships at The Palisades, to be held September 24-28 at the Tim Wilkison Signature Tennis and Sports Complex at The Palisades Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. Enqvist and Novacek replace Mark Philippoussis and Mikael Pernfors, who are both unable to compete due to injuries. Philippoussis is still not recovered sufficiently enough from knee surgery earlier this year to compete while Pernfors injured his Achilles heel competing in Paris last week.

Enqvist, who was a finalist at the 1999 Australian Open, and Novacek, a semifinalist at the US Open in 1994, join the field of players that includes Jim Courier, Todd Martin, Goran Ivanisevic and Wayne Ferreira.

"I am very happy and exited to play in my first Outback Champions series event," said Enqvist. "I have heard that Charlotte is one of the nicest cities on the tour and I'm really looking forward to competing against some of my great friends and rivals once again." Said Novacek, “I am thrilled to come to Charlotte and am looking forward to once again playing on the Outback Champions Series against some of the all-time great players such as Jim Courier, Goran Ivanisevic, Todd Martin and Wayne Ferreira.”public’s Karel Novacek will be added to the field at the 2008 Citadel Group Championships at The Palisades, to be held September 24-28 at the Tim Wilkison Signature Tennis and Sports Complex at The Palisades Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. Said Novacek, “I am thrilled to come to Charlotte and am looking forward to once again playing on the Outback Champions Series against some of the all-time great players such as Jim Courier, Goran Ivanisevic, Todd Martin and Wayne Ferreira.”

The Citadel Group Championships at The Palisades is the fifth of eight events on the 2008 Outback Champions Series, the global tennis circuit for champion tennis players age 30 and over. Tickets for the event can be purchased by calling 877-332-TIXX (8499) or visiting www.ChampionsSeriesTennis.com.

Enqvist, 34, achieved a career-high ranking of No. 4 in 1999, the same year he reached the final at the Australian Open, where he lost to Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia. Enqvist won 19 career ATP singles titles during his career and contributed to Sweden winning Davis Cup titles in 1997 and 1998.

Novacek, 43, achieved a career high ranking of No. 8 in the world and posted the most significant results of his career at the US Open, where he reached the singles semifinals in 1994, losing to Michael Stich, and in doubles with Martin Damm, he reached the doubles final in 1993, losing to Ken Flach and Robert Seguso. He won 13 career ATP singles titles.

Philippoussis, a former Wimbledon and U.S. Open finalist from Australia, was hoping to launch his comeback to professional tennis in Charlotte, but due to a delay in his recovery from knee surgery, he will not be able to compete. He will, however, play in next scheduled Outback Champions Series event, The Stanford Championships, to be held October 22-26 in Dallas.

“I am disappointed that I am not quite ready to compete in Charlotte,” said Philippoussis. “My doctor tells me I will be ready to go for the Stanford Championships in Dallas next month and I can't wait to step on the court there."

The Outback Champions Series features eight events on its 2008 schedule, with each event featuring an eight-man round-robin match format. The winner of each four-player division meets in the title match while second place finishers in each division play in the third-place match. Each event features $150,000 in prize money with an undefeated winner taking home $54,000 as well as Champions Series ranking points that will determine the year-end Stanford Champions Rankings No. 1. Beginning in 2008, the year-end champion will receive a $100,000 bonus courtesy of Stanford Financial Group, the official rankings sponsor of the Outback Champions Series. Through the first four events in 2008, Courier holds the No. 1 ranking with 2200 points. McEnroe holds the No. 2 ranking with 1800 points while Ferreira is in third position with 1050 points.

The part with him starts around 5:40-5:50. Nothing special, it's just for his diehard fans in case you haven't seen him for a while. It just says he lost the set they played in training and then he says a few words about Richard.

For fans of Tompa, you might be happy to know that he earned the 1st position at the Champions Tour Ranking (in the end of 2009). He has also been working with the tournament Stockholm Open during this autumn and is now the new captain of our Swedish Davis Cup-team. Together with another tennis player, Magnus Larsson!
The first DC-weekend is in Stockholm 5-7th of March 2010, between Sweden and Argentina, at the Royal Tennis Hall. Tickets will be available from mid January for those of you who want to cheer for Sweden, look at our great talent Robin Söderling and of course see Tomas in action as the team captain ;)

I will try to attach some pictures later from Stockholm Open, where Tomas actually played a doubles match just for fun with Thomas Johansson, Nicklas Kulti and Jonas Björkman on the last Saturday after the semis. It was a lot of fun to watch! :)

Swedish tennis is still alive!!! Jippiiiii :)

First one is from the official afterparty of If Stockholm Open 2009, together with Thomas Johansson. The next two pictures are from an interview that Thomas Enquist did for BMW with their Swedish CEO, then it´s a picture from the ProAm awards where Thomas participated several times. The picture from the tennis court is from the Royal Tennis Hall, when he played doubles together with Jonas Björkman, Thomas Johansson and Nicklas Kulti - for fun before the party on Saturday night.
The two last pictures are from partner activities at If Stockholm Open (interviews and BMW-launch).

Tickets for Sweden-Argentina the 5-7th of March, at the Royal Tennis Hall (Stockholm) will be released next week. http://www.tennis.se

I know! Everyone at the tournaments in Sweden really likes Thomas Enquist, who is one of the nicest and down-to-earth tennis players I have met through the years!
We are so happy that he is the new DC-captain, together with Magnus Larsson (also a good guy). Continuing the great work that Mats Wilander has done so far.

For those who want to see Thomas "live" at the Royal Tennis Hall and support the Swedish team against Argentina, the tickets were released yesterday at: http://dc.ebiljett.nu/
Hopefully we will see some great matches and keeping our fingers crossed that everyone is free from injuries and are getting lots of match practice these 2 months. The candidates are: Pim-Pim, Berta, Vinci, Lindstedt, Aspelin and Brunström. And most of all Söderling at his best :worship:

Tomas Enqvist in an interwiew on Aftonbladet.

1991 topped the junior world rankings, you won the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and went to the finals of the French Open. As a senior, you won 19 titles, but you could never win a Grand Slam tournament. You had your big chance in the Australian Open in 1999, but fell in the final against Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Is there anything you can still grieve you over?
- Yes, I am very disappointed to never have done it. If someone said that I would turn pro and win 19 titles when I and my brother played on Sköndal path I had taken it and been very proud. However, I must say that I definitely had the goal to win a Grand Slam tournament.

Many athletes fall into a crisis when they retire. Was it you too?

- Absolutely not. My girlfriend got pregnant pretty quickly. It was absolutely fantastic, and to be part of the whole pregnancy, and when Tim was born. He recently turned three years. It is the absolute best years of my life. Becoming a dad puts all other perspectives. It is so great, absolutely wonderful.

You won the ATP event in Marseille three times. It was no coincidence that you liked in France ...

- Carine, my partner, come from there. We have been together for ten years now. We met during the tournament in Marseille, where she worked for an event company. Then I ran to her tennis club in Monte Carlo, where I lived. Then I dared ask if she wanted to go out.

It wanted her, evidently.

- Yes, but when I asked if we could go out and eat, she replied that she would go home the next day. I did not miss the chance to go out with Carine - but had the other Swedish players managed to persuade me to join in the cabaret, held during the tournament in Monte Carlo. It has never been my thing, but we would do a number and I knew that I could not back out. So on our first date was Carine comply with the cabaret. I was dressed as a bald monk. Ha, ha, ha. It looked a bitch out.

When are you getting married?

- I actually acquitted in December 2006. Carine then became pregnant and then we decided to postpone it. We have no fixed date, but it is supposed to be in the late summer, next spring or summer.

Half the year do you live in a small village outside Aix-en-Provence. What is everyday life out there?

- It's pretty quiet and nice. Carine and I love to spend time together and with Tim. It will be much activity with him. I love the quality of life, climate and people and enjoy great down there. At the same time enjoy great Carine in Stockholm. We have been lucky. Nobody has had to make a sacrifice.

As little did you dream about playing for the swedish national hockey team? Is it true that you play hockey in France?

- Yes, for Marseilles in the division, 4th I love it. Although there are NHL is a dream to just put on his game jersey. There are not many French people who play hockey, but those who do it are very beaten.

You started playing tennis at Veteran Tour last year and is still top class. I dare say you are one of Sweden's five best players.

- It's hard to say, but not to practice more, I played very well last year.

Come on. In training you tend to take sets against Arnaud Clement, who is 67: a world ranking.

- Yes, I have something set. I can say. Alert Clément and want to train I do not say no, but I never find myself training. It can go three weeks without playing, but we veterans have proposed millions of balls, so battles are. The man is losing momentum. Against a pro, it is too fast.

Come on ... You played a 197 th-ranked Sebastien de Chaunac before he tried to qualify for the Australian Open this year. "It is better that you go to Melbourne," said he to have said.

- Some days are better than others, and against him, I used to pinch any set. I will honestly do not remember what it was, but he was not completely satisfied. He had been wounded and asked if he would really go.

Who is the best player you have faced?

- Pete Sampras. He serviced well and was so amazingly effective. I never got any rhythm against him.

How did you react when Andre Agassi dropped his memoirs and revealed that he was doped?

- The purpose seemed to be that he would get better in tennis. He took it because he had personal problems and may have been depressed. It surprised me, because there was nothing that was noticeable. I have read the book, which is very good and interesting. I liked Agassi. He was always Schysta in the dressing room and offered himself, especially during the second half of his career. He was incredibly important for tennis.

Agassi wore a wig in the final of French Open 1990th What is the craziest you've made on a tennis court?

- I'm so fucking bad against (Mahesh) Bhupathi, when we met in India in the Davis Cup. I lost the first set by 6-7 and lost the serve at 5-6 in the second. When burned it to the skull. When we walked past each other before sidbytet struck me with full force racket in nätstolpen - 20 inches from Bhupathis legs. He was terrified and proposed two double faults in her following serve game. The last two sets I won with 6-1, 6-1. Without mean anything bad, it was damn good. Racket stuck in the post, but I got rid of all the frustration.

You meet Argentina in the Royal Tennis Hall. It was Sweden in 1975 which won the Davis Cup for the first time. What does contemporary Swedish superstar, Björn Borg, meant for you?

- He was my first idol. When I was 14-15 years, I was playing with him in the Salk-hall. I have probably never was so nervous as that day, including all the games I have played. It was fantastic. When I saw him it looked like he had a halo around his head.

As a player I'll never be with and resolve a Davis Cup final.

- No, but I have two Davis Cup dents at home and am involved in two victories. When people ask what profit I remember best answer I often Davis Cup 1997th I played all the games until the finals, where Magnus (Larsson) took my place. We could use a broad squad and that was why we had such success. I was incredibly happy when we won.

Think you can win the Davis Cup as captain?

- Yes, chances are good. Robin (Soderling) is a real world star and the right surface, and with the right preparation for "Pim-Pim" (Joachim Johansson) to beat anyone. Yes, that includes all players in the world. "Vinci" (Andreas Vinciguerra) is a fighter who is also much better than his ranking. In addition, we have three good double player. We have a broad, but a very good squad, "said Thomas Enqvist.

Stefan Holm

Thomas Enqvist on ...
... Assistant DC captain Magnus Larsson:

"He's an incredible joy spreader, a very good friend and a smart player. For me he is also a real winner and such, I have in my team. "

... nicknames Melon, Garbo and Enebula:

"Melons come from Kulti. He tested my caps, which went down over his nose. Yes, I have a rather large head. Garbo, he started calling me because he thought that I hid in Monaco. Enebula from Martin Bohm and is just a sloppy version of Enqvist. "

... its great food & recipes:

"The first year I went with Nick (Kulti) and Magnus (Larsson) I ate almost always spaghetti and meat sauce. I did not understand what 'carbonara' and 'arrabiata' was. The food interest has become wider and wider and it is accompanied by a Frenchwoman, the wine and the arts. It's fun with all of local wines in France. "

... Swedish tennis future:

"We must be patient, but it feels like the tennis is going on. It was a long time since we had four players in the junior class in the Australian Open. Daniel (Berta) was the world's best junior last year, and Christian (Lindell) are an interesting guy who has started to gain on futures-level. "

... books:

"Sometimes I read a lot, sometimes not at all. It goes in periods, but I am not a bookworm. "

... Winter Olympics:

"I looked quite a lot. It was wonderful to see the cross-country skiers get as many medals. They have worn a lot and got the appreciation they deserve. It's almost as if you get tears in my eyes
