- Sex veckor, mestadels här i Stockholm.

Sådant bjuder in till spekulationer.

I have seen the match and I don´t really know what went wrong
Tompa was playing unbelievable great until the 4:0 lead in the 1st set, really everything was working and Rainer did not have a chance at all.
But then Tompa got big probs with his serve and I think after the 4:0, he did not win one of his own serve games, only broke Schuettlers serve...
It was really a strange match and I am very sad Tompa lost, cos in the beginning me and all the other fans have been so optimistic, he really played great tennis there!

Waiting for Vals report...

Yes Birte, Tompa lost :crying2: :crying2:
The French fan club was there  It's sad to see him lose cause it was tough, and he could have won. But, Tursunov was always taking with the chair empires cause many balls out (he tought there were in). In the tie-break, Tursunov lead easily, so Thomas couldn't come back and he was frustrated and threw several balls. And, in the second, only one break to win the match. It was very stressy because Thomas had to come back each time, so we were limit to applaud the faults of Tursunov, I know it wasn't fair-play but...

At the end of the match, he talked a little bit with his girlfriend who was sitting on the same side as us. So, we took some good pictures. When he left her, he waved us :)

Now, I hope we'll see him in 2006 !!

The pics are there, the quality is not good but it's difficult to take pics in indoors, especially in Paris, because of the lights. Hope you'll like them :)

Thomas is not in holiday! On dec. 15th, he's playing Scandic Challenge.

Thomas requested a wild-card for Adelaide but he's not sure to have it, because the organisation thinks to give it to an Aussie :(
here's an article about that:

Doubting Thomas
Leo Schlink
22dec05

FORMER world No. 4 Thomas Enqvist is confronting the brutal realty of tennis with no guarantee of a main draw start during the Australian summer season.

An Australian Open singles finalist and one of the purest ball strikers in the sport, Enqvist has slipped to No. 133 in the world.
And, at age 30, the Swede's box office appeal is clearly on the wane in Australia. His application for a singles wildcard for the Adelaide International from January 2 is being evaluated, but is unlikely to be granted.

Enqvist had made a habit of using the Memorial Drive tournament as an Australian Open launching pad over the past 14 years.

He won Adelaide in 1999, dethroning reigning champion Lleyton Hewitt, who had his revenge in the 2000 final.

Enqvist first contested the tournament in 1991. He returned for a ninth Adelaide visit this year.

Though Enqvist has been a strong supporter of the Adelaide event, organisers have made it known Australian players will be given preference.

"Thomas has made the request for a wildcard and we've said it's under consideration," co-tournament director Peter Johnston said

"But our feeling is that, though he's got a great record in Australia, we're really looking at the Aussies.

"Through his (Enqvist's) management group, there is an understanding of where he is with that.

"With Lleyton in the main draw and Mark Philippoussis as a wildcard, there's not of lot of other Aussies.

"At this stage, we'll be looking towards the Aussies."

There will be a pre-qualifying event in the week leading up to the tournament.

Home-grown players with the requisite performance and attitude will be rewarded.

Where the stars get their drive
Sam Edmund
16jan06

HE is a teacher 11 1/2 months of the year, but every January Roman Horoway becomes one of the world's most important chauffeurs.

It is during this fortnight that the father of two from Mt Martha drives the world's best tennis players around Melbourne for the Australian Open.
"My claim to fame is that Serena Williams spoke to me," Mr Horoway said. "She said, 'Can you turn the radio down?'

"She wasn't a fan of the 3AW breakfast show."

Among his ever-increasing star passenger list are Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, the Williams sisters and Britain's Tim Henman.

"Tim was telling me once that I was in the wrong lane, but I told him if we went into the lane on the right we would end up in freeway traffic. But he said, 'Oh that's OK, I'll get you back in'," Mr Horoway said.

"As we were trying to merge, I said, 'You better stick your head out and wave, because we're not going to get back in' so he did and these people went, 'That's Tim Henman -- let him in!' "

He has even offered advice on films to see.

"A couple of years ago I had Thomas Enqvist . . . he was going to the movies and he asked if there was anything worth seeing," he said.

"I'm a bit of a movie buff, so I gave him a review of a few.

"The following year I did the same trip and I asked if he was going to the movies, and he said, 'How did you know?'

"When I reminded him, he went, 'Oh, you gave me those great reviews. What's good this year?' "

Mr Horoway said knowing when to speak and when to stay silent was most important.

"It's a bit like a golf caddie who is told to keep up and shut up unless the player starts talking," he said. "But they're generally really lovely people.

"After Federer lost that semi-final match to Marat Safin last year, he stuck his head out and thanked all the drivers."

it would be awesome to be a driver for the players. :drive:

RIVER OAKS INTERNATIONAL
Enqvist trying to go out on top
Veteran battles back from injury, ponders retirement

By DALE ROBERTSON
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

For the moment, Thomas Enqvist's aching back seems fine. But, as he prepares to launch what he says will be his final comeback, the 32-year-old Swede had to put ice on his sore right foot after an hour-long workout with Donald Young Jr., on Saturday at River Oaks Country Club.

Enqvist's 15-year pro career began not long after Young, the promising American teenager, was born. Enqvist has won more than $10 million on the court and enjoyed a life for which he is "very, very thankful." He could quit today and want for nothing, except one thing.

Tennis.

"I still enjoy playing, very much," Enqvist said as he prepares to return to competition for the first time since November at the River Oaks International exhibition tournament, which starts Monday.

"I love the game as much as I ever did. I'm just hopeful that my body will allow me to play at a level that I expect of myself. If it doesn't ... "

He hesitated to finish the sentence. He didn't want to speak the words.

"Then," he conceded, "this is probably it for me. I don't want to have to keep compensating (for injuries). I've been doing that for too long."

Enqvist has enjoyed a quietly remarkable career, one that should leave him without regrets if 2006 is his final season.

Only four active players — Agassi, Federer, Hewitt and Roddick — have won more tournaments than his 19, and in 1999 he got as high as fourth in the world .

Enqvist is widely respected as a player and extremely well-liked by his peers for his equanimity. There's nothing left for him to prove or, realistically, achieve.

What he's chasing now is purely esoteric, a Zen state if you will. He knows he won't win Wimbledon. But he'd like to play Wimbledon again pain-free and deliver a match — or several — that he's genuinely proud of and that reveals the best tennis he's capable of.

Enqvist's quest is simple: to go out on the top of his game, wherever that leads him in his final tennis chapter.

He fell out of the ATP's top 100 in 2005 for the first time in 13 seasons, and his current ranking is 206th, although he admits he doesn't pay much attention to that.

"My problem is wear and tear, that's all," Enqvist said. "You have an MRI after 15 years on the Tour and you can find so many things wrong. I've had foot and shoulder surgery (in 2000) and then the back problem started last year ... "

He first played River Oaks not long after he reached No. 1 in the world junior rankings, returned to the tournament during a rehab stint in 2001 and played it again last year.

The fact that ATP ranking points aren't at stake this week is irrelevant to him.

It's possible he'll try to qualify for the U.S. Clay Court Championships at Westside Tennis Club next week. He'd prefer, however, to play deep into the River Oaks draw. He wants to stick around long enough to watch an old adversary play.

Pete Sampras faces Robby Ginepri on Thursday in Sampras' first competitive match since he won the 2002 U.S. Open. Sampras beat Enqvist nine times in 11 meetings between 1992 and 2000, but Enqvist won their last match at Indian Wells, Calif., six years ago.

Interestingly, Enqvist is 5-5 lifetime against Andre Agassi, another tennis senior citizen. Agassi is almost four years older than Enqvist and an ongoing source of inspiration.

"Andre's remarkable," he said. "It has been a privilege to play on the Tour at the same time with him and Pete."

 come on tompa!

I phoned the tournament at (713) 874-6333 to get the score result for the Enqvist match.

Unfortunately, Thomas Enqvist lost 0-6, 6-2, 2-6.

The only good thing is that now maybe Thomas will try to qualify for the tournament across town, the U.S. Mens Clay Courts, qualifying to begin this weekend I think.

Enqvist talks

Each day three time If Stockholm Open champion, Thomas Enqvist, writes about his thoughts about the upcoming matches. See the first post of Enqvist below.

Soderling looking strong

On Monday, the main tournament of this year´s If Stockholm Open, gets underway. Right from the start there will be many interesting matches. At 14.00 the Belgian Olivier Rochus, with his 165 centimeters, will be up against Vincent Spadea from the United States. In my opinion Rouchus is really worth watching due to his impressive movement on court, sensible wrist and strong counter attacks. The experienced American has however a mental advantage through his leading head to head statistics against Rochus.

To follow on centre court is the battle of former If Stockholm Open champions Paradorn Srichapan and Mardy Fish. They both know that their former successes in this tournament will boost their self confidence. The shot maker Srichapan will battle it out against Fish’s hard serve and impressive backhand.

At 18.30 the first Swede will enter the main tournament. Robin Soderling takes on Christophe Rochus, Oliviers bigger brother. I think that Robin can go really far in this year’s tournament. He will bring confidence from his two wins in the Davis Cup play off against Brazil. Not to forget is that indoor hardcourt has become Robin’s best surface. But we can’t count out the blonde Belgian just yet. Rochus is very steady and will not easily give points away. Robin has to be very focused the entire match, and due to his strong form, I see him as a winner.

In the last match on center court, the much talented Czech Tomas Berdych will play against Bjorn Phau, the German with a most impressive footwork. Berdych has proved that he can beat anyone. His scalps include both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The young Czech still lacks some stability which is nothing you can be without if you want to be in the top five. But Berdych’s talent and eye for the game can definitely help him on his way to reach the top.

October 10th

Enqvist: Tought test for "Pim-Pim"

Swedish Day on center court

During Thursday three more Swedish players have the chance to join Robin Soderling to the second round of If Stockholm Open. The first warrior is Andreas Vinciguerraa. "Vinci" is going up against the marathon man Nicolas Devilder who had a hard four hours qualifying match against Björn Rehnquist. It´s verry nice to have Vincigurrea back on the tour after some hard years with injury problems. It shows what a big fighter he is and I am very proud of to see him back.

At half past five Jonas Bjorkmans will go up aginst Peter Wessels. The Dutch has dropped on the world rankings, but has a great indoor play with a great serve. I am keeping my thumbs up for "Bjösse" who is a big favourite. Jonas enjoys to play aginst serve specialists and he is used to playing well in Stockholm

Afterward is time to see the big audience favourite Rafael Nadal who is getting out in the heat. It is going to be very interesting to see "Rafa" play. I think that the a bit slower surface is going be suitable for "Rafa". The boll is bouncing a bit higher and that is great for Nadal’s topspin. The opponent, Raemon Sluiter, has done some surprise results in If Stockholm Open when he four years ago beat the first seeded Lleyton Hewitt.

In tonight’s last match, Joachim "Pim-Pim" Johansson is up against Davide Sanguinetti. Sanguinetti has a tricky game and has very flat strokes. The 34-year old constantly decreases the tempo and is a very difficult opponent. "Pim-Pim" has played well during practice and also won a Futures tournament recently. But it is something completely different to play in front of a packed house in the Royal Tennis Hall. This will be a real test for "Pim-Pim". I will follow this match with great interest.

October 12th

[/b]Enqvist: The show goes on[/b]

The seventh day of the If Stockholm Open has started and just as yesterday another magical night awaits the Royal Tennishall. I would say that the attraction of today is the final match when the legend John McEnroe enters the Centercourt, yet not to forget that the day contains several other high standard match-ups. Jarkko Nieminen, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and James Blake are all established top players that flourish the afternoon.

Definitely an exciting afternoon, but the evening will be even better. First out, at 6.30 pm, the Swedish hope Andreas Vinciguerra challenges the no. 3 seed Tomas Berdych from Czech. Both of them advanced pretty comfortably from the first round and I’m sure that the stands will be crowded to witness the battle between them. "Vince" is a very popular player and it’s very pleasant to have him in the thick of things again. To overcome his opponent today I think that Vinciguerra has to play with a huge confidence. He has to be in charge of the game, otherwise Berdych will and that is highly dangerous.

It is nothing short of amazing that John McEnroe is back in Stockholm. Those of you who have managed to get tickets are to be congratulated. McEnroe may not be the greatest player in history but he is for sure the biggest character. Bjorkman/McEnroe will face "the Johanssons", Joachim and Thomas, in the last match of the evening. For me, Jonas Bjorkman is the best doubles player in the world. His returns, pace and quick reaction time are quite simply magnificent. McEnroe’s form is more uncertain. It has been a while since I last saw him play and it will therefore be very interesting to see him coping with Thomas’s and Joachims’s serves, which are both among the best in the world.

Picking a favourite is not easy. The outcome will largely depend on whether the Swedish-American constellation can get their game going or if the Swedes’ serves will prove to be invincible. Regardless how the match ends, the spectators in the Royal Tennis Hall will be treated to an evening that won’t be forgotten!

Thomas Enqvist

October 13th

Enqvist: I’m impressed by Robin Söderling

It’s Friday and the day of quarterfinals at the If Stockholm Open. Just like last year two Swedes are still in the run to become the Champion. Joachim "Pim-Pim" Johansson is first out and already at 4.30 pm he and his opponent Belgian Kristof Vliegen enter the Centercourt. "Pim-Pim" played some amazing tennis when he beat Nadal the day before yesterday, and hopefully he can pull it out once again. Note that today’s match will be quite different since Vliegen has a very strong serve and likes to take the net. However, if Johansson continues his great game I believe that the semifinal is just around the corner for the Swede.

When the clock shows 6.30 pm it’s time for the top game of the evening between the other Swede Robin Söderling and Tomas Berdych from Czech. Robin has appeared extremely strong out there and I think he has been the most impressive player of the tournament. Berdych on the other hand barely defeated Swede Andreas Vinguerra yesterday as "Vinci" played some great tennis. The Swede was up one set and served at 5-4 in the second set, but yet finally he lost to the world no. 11 by 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.

The fact that Berdych was very close to losing yesterday might be a positive thing for the Czech as he can relax in another way. Looking back at my own carreer some of my more successful tournaments started off pretty rough. A perfect example of that is in Philadelphia 1995 where I despite being one point from losing to Jaime Yzaga in the first round managed to conquer the title after defeating Agassi in the semifinal and Chang in the final. When it comes to today’s match I think that Robin will win, no matter how good Berdych is, because that’s how great Robin is right now.

Todays last match , at 8.30 pm, is the doubles between veterans Jonas Bjorkman and John McEnroe and the Swedish-Australian constellation Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry. Aspelin/Perry is a great ensemble that usually advances to the final rounds, and I think that they will be a large threat to Björkman/McEnroe. Still, Björkman/McEnroe is an unbeaten duo that complements each other perfect on the court. I think we can expect a tight, amusing fight tonight so don’t miss it!

Okay, here is finally the translation of the Tompa interview on tennis.se

First he was asked how he ranked his 3 triumphs at the Stockholm Open.
Tompa says that he ranks them very high as the Stockholm Open have always been very special for him. He plays at home, his friends and family support him and he always went there as a kid and wanted to win the tournament.
He especially mentions one match against Rios somewhere in the late 90´s, where a lot of chilean fans where at the match and it was an atmosphere like in a DC match. Tompa won that match in the end!

Thomas says he does not regret that he stopped playing tennis. Only when he came back for the first time to a tournament (Stockholm Open) he felt a bit sad and the wish to play again. But that was the first time ever since he stopped playing!

Tompa says it will be most interesting to watch all the Swedish guys at Stockholm Open, because one of them always reaches far in the tournament.

Thomas says that he personally thinks a lot of different games in tennis have disappeared. Today most of the players play a similar game and he thinks this is quite sad if you compare it to earlier tennis generations.

Then Thomas was asked again about the Stockholm Open and he says that it is a great tournament and for him the Center court in the "Kungliga Tennishallen" is the best one in the whole world.

In between he says, what I had already written earlier, that he and Carine will become parents in march 2007 and that he, Tompa, will go back to school at the end of this year in order to learn french! :)

Lingua Franca
Retired Enqvist facing a foe far tougher than Sampras
Posted: Thursday November 30, 2006 2:31PM; Updated: Thursday November 30, 2006 3:01PM

For Thomas Enqvist, the last four weeks have been more intense and demanding than any since he joined the pro tennis tour in 1991. The 32-year-old Swede, winner of 19 singles titles and runner-up at the '99 Australian Open, has been drilling in fundamentals eight hours a day.

Enqvist just completed a French immersion program that at times reduced him to stammering, tongue-tied impotence. He polished his pronouns and flexed his past participles at the Institut de Français, a luxurious villa overlooking the Mediterranean on the Cote d'Azur.

"For a solid month it was French, French, French," says Enqvist, whose wit is drier than a fine Sancerre. "I felt like I was playing in Key Biscayne on a windy day when I'm not in shape."

Until he retired from the tour in April, the straight-talking, flat-hitting Enqvist was almost always in shape. You have to be to finish in the top 10 four times and win at least one ATP title for six consecutive years.

He signed up for classes in deference to his fiance, Carine Demaria, a native of nearby Aix-en-Provence. They met seven years ago in Monaco, where they now share a home. They're expecting their first child in February.

"On the tour, everyone speaks English," says Enqvist. "I always told Carine that after I finished my career, I would learn her language. She's been very encouraging."

Incoming students at the Institut de Français are tested in speaking ability and listening comprehension, then placed in appropriate groups of no more than 10 students. Enqvist, a novice, was put in the "debutante" class. "No," he says, "I didn't have to wear a ball gown."

Only French was allowed -- anyone caught speaking another language risked a fine from the cook as well as a croissant to the ear. The kitty went toward champagne and French Provencal hors d'oeuvres on graduation day.

Before he enrolled, many of the French words Enqvist knew were unsuitable for a family Web site. "They were not words a student could say to a professor's face," he allows.

So what's his favorite French word now? "Bouillabaisse," he cracks.

Invariably, the most grueling part of Enqvist's day unfolded in the language laboratoire -- known to the mutinous as l'abattoir. By the end of the four weeks, he was expected to slip direct and indirect pronouns into passé compose (past tense) and negative sentence structures.

Lab work, he says, required the patience of a clay-court specialist. "It was difficult," he recalls, "but it was also difficult to return the serves of Pete Sampras." For the record, Sampras beat Enqvist nine times in 11 matches.

Ultimately, French grammar proved more intricate than French vocabulary. "In French, you can have the exception to the exception," Enqvist says. "That reminded me of Pete Sampras, too."

How so?

"Pete was an exceptional player."

Thanks a lot  I don't know why people can't send me a PM, I have to check. You are not the first person to tell me that today.
Yes, the day was good, I've just came back from a Mexican restaurant, good food :)

Is it just me or has Enqvist had an inconsistent career?

He could have been a great player but he his form goes up and down through out his playing days. Reaches the top 5 then drops back then comes back.

He was several times injured, I can't say that he was inconsistent. He's not the only one to have been several times injured in his career. If he has been injured free, he could have stayed longer in the top 5
