Just realised there is no thread here for Nicolas! So, since he just won the Monza challenger yesterday, I decided to make one for him!!

Some piccies from the tournament:

Nico reachs SF once again in the Bergamo Challenger. He's gonna play FAUREL this afternoon for a tough derby.Maybe à 100% french final against robert....

Thanks to his last great results Nico reachs ranking n° 140 today, and probably aims at the TOP 100 if he keep on playing so good.

yeah...he's playing against vanek today in tunis as well...tough draw cos vanek is #2 seed, but hopefully he can do well!

Thanks to this ranking he should enter the main draw in RG without passing through qualif or asking a WC.

wow! do you think so? #140?

Crocodile
05-05-2006, 07:51 AM
He has to play Prague and San remo to reach the cut which may be ~120 ( some TO100 players are already WO).

Yeah you're right, it's gonna be difficult for him...

~EMiLiTA~
05-05-2006, 08:56 AM
yeah, it'll be quite tough...has he already got into prague? i know he was 2nd or 3rd on the alternates list

if he doesn't get a direct entry into RG, they should give him a WC...he's already won 2 clay challengers this year

Well, this week the guy is going to try the RR system on himself in Argentina - and possibly meet Ferrero again. Allez Nic'!

I’d even say it’s Devilder after all. After a 4 hours 3-setter on indoors carpet 3 hours on clay is a joke. I’ve noticed his matches often go in such a hmm… protracted manner. Though not sure yet what it depends on.

Devild’s win over JCF gave me an idea to make a sort of an honours list of Nicolas’ greatest victories. So here it goes:

19 Apr 2004 Monte Carlo (MS) – 1st round def Ivanisevic 4-6 6-2 6-2
5 Jul 2004 Scheveningen (CH) – 1st round def Gasquet 6-0 6-4
3 Jan 2005 Chennai (IS) – 1st round def Baghdatis 6-4 6-7(10) 7-6(5)
21 Feb 2005 Acapulco (IS) – 1st round def Acasuso 6-4 6-4
18 Apr 2005 Monza (CH) – 1/4 final def Djokovic 4-6 6-3 7-5
21 Feb 2007 Buenos Aires (RR) – Round Robin def Ferrero 1-6 7-6(2) 6-0

Hope you all are not too disappointed about the 1/4 final loss. Not that I’m happy with it myself but I think stability – in game and results - is the thing Nicolas needs first of all now. So sudden highs are also not so great on this point.

apparently nicolas was already on a plane leaving the country when the tournament organisers found him and got him back for the quarters :haha: :haha:
Last week I saw an article about this story. I’ve liked how it is described there, and it seems to be a great article about RR in general (the only bad thing it’s in Spanish lol). Maybe someone haven’t read it before and can find it interesting too so I’ll leave a link (http://www.lanacion.com.ar/deportiva/nota.asp?nota_id=885997&origen=rss).

lol at 'centre court and so on'. i'm starting to appreciate the nerves he must be feeling. maybe that's why he ran away :haha: may not be the fault of RR misleading him!
A nice idea :) Well, according my source Devild felt himself not too bad playing on centre court against local guys – at least he looked like that at his match against Brzezicki. No racket throwing or misbehaving :p

Ja, jeg er fra Danmark!! :D! Why is it that you can speak Danish? :D
Okej, snakkes i andre tråder ;)

This week Devild plays in Acapulco and he has already won his first round match against Fabio Fognini and made their head-to-head records 1-2. According the scores and statistics it was a really tough match – and another more-than-3-hours one

The second round is against Chela… Well, just wish Nicolas to have a good match.

Do you have any idea when this picture was taken?

The second round of Houston is not a bad result, but well, he could take at least a set from Haas. According the statistics of both matches Nicolas had heaps of break points but won just a few of them. And in that second round match both players had an equal number of BPs, five, but you know the result. A little bit nervous game is in the air, may suppose Haas won so easily just because of his experience.

So the lack of experience of the highest level matches is the main minus of Challengers I think. As for the rest, I see nothing bad that he prefers playing at that circle, and as Emily said that's a rather good stategy of mixing challengers with some bigger tournaments. But "getting too good for challengers" is a really nice wish :)
Sure, it'll be cool if he could start playing bigger tournies but for the moment I just hope he can gather some more points too...especially after seeing he had dropped to no. 105 on the ATP list :awww: ...
Normally he's dropped so much because he had to miss Monza Challenger he won last year, so he couldn't defend his points and so on. But do hope he'll be back to the Top 100 very soon and then will also come to rewrite his highest ranking which was 81st position.

Bermuda draw is out and seems to be quite fine for Nico. Would love to see him going farer than usually this year :)

Well, sure it's a pity Nico lost to Zabaleta, moreover it seems to be a close match but what I like in his results is stability. And the main thing for now I suppose is to keep it like that and come to RG in his best form.

Next up is Casablanca and the first round against Acasuso. Don't think Acasuso is a worse rival than Zabaleta so hope Nicolas will show great tennis and a good score

Sophie-d

Maybe Luczak doesn’t like Swedish food lol

Well, Nico has been so much looking forward to this WC and now when he doesn’t really need it anymore they’ve finally decided to give him one (and perhaps they’re going to take it back? lol)... Ok, anyway a WC is a big honour and the main thing is that Nicolas will be in the main draw. Actually keeping his latest results in the mind I’m veeery pessimistic but still I want it sooo much to see him winning a match in singles, or better two or even better... ehhh, so what I was talking about? :o
Fingers crossed for a not too bad draw.

The other WCs went to (but seems it may be changed): Mahut, Montcourt, Roger-Vasselin, Patience, Sidorenko and ( ) Eysseric.

P.S. Sorry for bringing that Spanish quote without any translation!! Actually I speak no Spanish myself, can only somehow understand it. Glad you've translated it after all.

Via
05-21-2007, 11:23 PM
i guess if they give the WC (which means something else in regular usage, but well.... :tape: ) to nicolas, then someone lower ranked, of whatever nationality, will be able to get direct entry, so it will do this guy good. they probably can't think of another deserving frenchie lol

so good luck to nico. isn't clay still a preferred surface for him? i know he got a bagel in his last match, but then, so did the RG defending champion

ahh i was excited to see a spanish quote... need a challenge sometimes! but of course the expert here is emily ;)

Well, hope they’ll find a worthy successor for Nico’s WC.

By the way, there was a 10 min interview with Nicolas last week on French "Radio Tennis (http://www.radio-tennis.com)". Quite a big event, no? :) He talks about this season which is, as he says, the first one when he has real chances to get directly into the main draws of big tournaments. He considers his victory over Ferrero as his most beautiful one in the beginning of the year. As for his coaches, he tells he works a lot there with Team Lagardere, he’s learnt a lot of tactical features from them and still has enough things to improve. About RG he says it’s just another tournament but yes, it’s very special in France and sure very important for him as well as for any French player. His main aim of the season is to consolidate his positions in the Top 100 and to get into the main draws of other Grand Slams. In the end Nicolas was asked to describe Marcelo Rios and he says not that Marcelo is such a huge idol for him but he was really impressed with his game. But I haven’t heard it all properly so that’s in very short, only those things I remember right now. And with my poor French a half can be wrong, e.g. maybe in fact he’s going to break into the Top 10 and win a couple of nice trophies :)

Sorry once again that I didn't take more pictures for you :)

For the match, I saw really no signs of his injury. I wasn't looking too closely, but he seemed to be playing 'injury-free'.

He didn't play that well during the first set, buthe really fought back in the 2nd. I think he was down a break and then broke back when Ascione was serving for the match. Ascione seemed to really punish him with his backhand, mainly hitting clean winners that Nicolas couldn't get too.

If anything else comes back to me, I'll let you know. :)

I have noticed it only now that I missed your post :o Well, you should know it better than me what he was doing in Australia
In fact I only meant that he had never been winning a match in Australia or New Caledonia (ok, maybe except once in AO qualies) but this year he won even 3 matches there. And then it took him a while to take a victory on clay

As for the news, he won a tournament in France (seems he does know how to play against his countrymen!) last week, and now his new quest is for AngelDevil trofeo - next week at Barletta Challenger

 what a name... suits him

Absolutely.
Also tournament's official hotel was called Nicotel
For the record he reached the semis there and this week he was stopped in the first round of another Challenger. Do hope it was just a misfire and next week in Monza he'll get his fighting spirit back

Nice article about Nico in L'Equipe today:

Pourquoi ça me gênerait ? Ça me va bien. »

He belongs to the category of the Patience, Prodon, Ascione, all these guys who sometimes are in the top 100, most of the time out of it, who keep trying without complaining and are awarded for their efforts at some point. For Nico, it happened yesterday. It was the 15th time he tried to qualify for a Slam and the 1st time he went through. He's very proud and stresses he hasn't lost a set in 3 rounds.
He has no coach at the moment. He's been part of the Team Lagardère for 2 1/2 years and they've helped him a lot last year when he reached his best ranking (#81). But now, it's a different story. He was supposed to work with Peyre this year, but Peyre also was in charge of Mahut, so it never happened. And it annoys him a bit nobody has said anything. That's how it works now: the Team Lagardère is for top players! Like a company. So he's been working alone since January. He has to fend for himself.
The journalist confirms there was nobody from the Team Lagardère watching him qualifying. But Nico says his gf was there, and that's the most important. His buddy Patience was also there. About Nico, he says: "He's a 'ratas' on clay. A warrior with a superb touch who can play 20 dropshots in one match."
Nico's only win in a Grand Slam so far happened in... Wimbledon. "Oh yeah, that's true, Patience says. Gosh, Zabaleta should be ashamed for the rest of his life!"
Nico doesn't mind being called a "rat" - his nickname is "raton" (which can mean young rat or racoon in French). "Nothing wrong with being the guy the others don't like to get 'lumbered' with. It's fine for me."

You're welcome, I like these articles during the qualifying week of Roland about the less famouse guys, the Ouanna one was nice too, last year Recouderc, etc.

Can't he go back to the FFT? They're annoying too in many regards, but they wouldn't let him without a coach for months.

Hangdog
05-24-2008, 07:12 PM
Well, here I probably have a little bit different interest but I agree, these articles about less famous guys are indeed interesting. I even still remember that one about Recouderc!

As for your question, I've been wondering about the same thing for months! Lagardère was great mainly for the off-season and preparation between events. I think he anyway had to go to many tournaments without a coach.
Nicolas is a great player and he'd surely be ranked much higher if he had a good coach. But it's too expensive and he can't afford it while he is not in the Top 100. So here comes a dilemma... (There was an article on a similar topic, you can have a look: http://www.liberation.fr/actualite/sports/302064.FR.php)
I don't really know how the relations between the Federation and private clubs are going but I'm afraid they'll be barely interested in a 28 yo Top 150 player unless, again, he makes a good run in rankings.

In L’Equipe today:
Je me rappelle qu’à l’US Open l’an dernier j’avais été très mal quand j’avais dû affronter Youzhny. J’étais mené 6-0, 3-0 et là, je n’étais pas du tout relax (il avait perdu 6-0, 6-1, 6-2). Pourvu que ça ne me reprenne pas… »
(I don’t know why they say that Nadal actually does know who he is – ‘lire par ailleurs’ – because I didn’t find anything else in today's issue.)
I like the story when Safin asks him what he’s been doing since he has retired.

And Potier in Libération about Nico:

I like the story when Safin asks him what he’s been doing since he has retired.
A day before there was an interview with Nadal, though I don't remember where exactly, maybe even not in l'Equipe, where Rafa was asked whether he knows his next rival. And Rafa was like "Devilder, no? I've seen a bit of his play, one more lefty. It's going to be not too easy."
They also discussed that story about Safin in "Tennis Club" lol
He's such a star, another long report about him in "Un jour à Roland" yesterday:

Yeah, looks like he's been one of the most popular French players for a couple of days! I don't know how you all manage to follow more popular guys! It's more normal when I open Google Actualités and it says there have been no articles about Devilder in the last 30 days. And when there are over 500 articles only there... That's scaring!! lol
So one more time thanks for all the articles and links! :worship:

And I have a little question. Here is Nico's post match interview: http://roland-garros.france3.fr/index-fr.php?page=videos&id_rubrique=23&id_article=656, could you tell me, please, what were Toni Nadal's words they mention? My "perfect" French doesn't really help me to get that part :p

:hearts: I fell in love yesterday! And I can't get enough of his hair!!!

Actually I think if I wasn't "his expert" (lol) already I'd surely fall in love as well after this match! Such a nice altitude and the ways he's started and finished the match were just awesome :worship: I think it's better to have a match against Nadal like this one at Lenglen rather than get a less tough opponent, maybe go through one more round, but never enjoy that atmosphere of the centre court. And I like Nico's phrase that the moment of stepping into that court is really exciting and thanks to the rain he's got a chance to enjoy it twice lol

And as always thanks for the pictures! Though photographers did not a really good job this time, couldn't they catch his smile?
i can't even remember what colours arnaud's been wearing

Mahut hair?! Maybe the hair style is a little bit similar, but that's all. Have you ever seen him with long blonde hair? :p

Actually he's only got one chance to make a break at 4-4 and then serve for the match but he's missed it. And that made me thinking that if change RG format to best-of-1-set there would be better chances for a Frenchman to finally win it :o

It was weird though, because when I first turned on the TV for this match I only saw the hair and thought "oh Nadal is playing Mahut"... then I thought "wait, Mahut was already beaten yesterday  " and then Nico turned around

Nico's team lost 6-7 lol More details: video (http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/multimedia/console/mflash.html?targetLink=/media/video/NEWS.03062008_FR_480x360_400kbps.flv&lang=fr_FR&localisIE=false), photo (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3057/2553899226_12a146813a_o.jpg).

Also there was a nice interview with Nicolas (http://www.sudouest.com/300508/reg_landes.asp?Article=300508aP2502115.xml).
He told that he joined Lagardère Team and began regularly playing ATP tournaments just a couple of years ago so he is still very fresh and motivated, and he hopes to play tennis at the highest level for a few more years. He prefers not thinking about what he's going to do after finishing his carrier but probably it'll be something about tennis, about sports for sure. And he thinks he'll move back to Landes (where his parents live) as he believes that region, South West of France, is so wonderful and has nothing to do with Paris :p

Next week he plays a Challenger in Kosice where he won in 2006

Not that I have something against Paris but countryside rules :)
Nico must be the same person as me who prefers nice lovely silent places to big noisy crowded cities

So can you tell us who is Kamil Capkovic anyway? He seems to be a tall guy with a good serve who prefers playing on hard

So, I will try my best to describe you Kamil. Yeah, he's really tall, he's 1,98 m I think (so he usually scared me to death when he walked in, because I'm 1,65 :D) and has a good serve. He doesn't make a lot of aces, though, I'd say he has a good percentage but he doesn't take much risk so he doesn't put the serve to the lines. He's improved a lot since last year, he used to be a kind of sloth, now he plays harder and quicker. I think although he's so tall, he can play long rallies (he's not that kind of player like Querrey, Karlovic etc.). But I think still he's not too agressive and maybe he has a lack of experience, but he might do some good results in future, considering he's still quite young. Oh, and he has terrible taste in picking doubles' partners :D Off the court he's really nice guy and if he wants something from you, just close your eyes, cover your ears and run away, because if you stay and let him speak and do the pleading eyes, he will get anything he wants from you :haha: My personal experience :D

Here you have him:

Now you can start blaming me again lol :o Thanks for the info about Kamil, it was a nice match! I only was scared that he'll begin talking to Nico (and you said it's dangerous!) or he'll crash the webcam one minute (his shots were dangerous as well!) and I won't be able to watch the rest of the match.

Nico doesn't play Wimbledon indeed, and I guess his participation in US Open is also a big question, he'll probably play it only if he gets directly into the main draw.
He's going to play on clay during the whole summer (mostly Challengers). Now he is in Braunschweig, plays 1st round against Junqueira. And I do hope he'll manage to win it!

True, but anyway in his case there is more sense in playing a Challenger on clay rather than any tournament on grass.

I won't blame you :). I think Kamil doesn't speak French and as for his English, I'm not sure it's so good Nico would understand him :D At least I did understand a little bit of his Slovak and he got a prize money form from me which I wasn't allowed to give him, because he was whining how much he needs it and has to catch his plane and he was doing pleading eyes, so finally I gave it to him and then was praying the whole week nobody noticed it's missing :haha: But truly a good match, although I just saw the result, because I wasn't able to watch it as I was in Poland that day. I think Kamil's slowly improving...

Junqueira is a tricky player for the 1st round. But let's hope he'll do well in Braunschweig. I think he doesn't have many points to defend in the US Open, does he?

Well, speaking more precisely, it's his second title of the year. He got the first one when he won a local French tournament earlier this year. Of course, it's less important but anyway I think that was a great victory too as there were represented such guys as Patience and Sidorenko.
Speaking about the better part of the season - he is back to the Top 100 this week!!! :aparty: Now he is exactly on the 100th place

Hello, Irina! :wavey: Haven't heard from you for a while? Were you on holiday?

Maria :D Sorry for leaving you alone here :o  Yes, I'm on holiday at the moment though I haven't left yet, just have rarely been at home. And how is your summer going?

Maybe 2006 was Ostrava Ch.'s worst year (what happened to it?) but it was one of the best Nico's years so far - considering the number of titles he took ;) But he is not far from beating his own records and make 2008 his best year

He doesn't play tomorrow and I think it is good.

Tulipe

I'm home as I've already been on holiday, so I'm just pottering around and I'm quite bored. Still no plans for holiday in Prague ;)?

I don't know exactly what happened. The 2005 was just great, but then I think the tournament in Munich, which is on ATP level, got a lower cut so all the players went there to gain more points and there was anyone playing here. Most of the players were Czech players from futures. I even didn't go there to watch that year. But in 2007 it was much better and also this year wasn't bad.

I think it will be a very chaotic week in Kitzbuhel, the forecast is pretty bad and with no play yesterday they will probably have to let them play two matches in one day if the weather is still so bad...

Hangdog
07-15-2008, 06:35 PM
Nico! Seppi withdrew so he got a lucky loser instead  Maria, do you know when a player gets informed that he should play again a LL?
Anyway I hope Nicolas doesn't have troubles dealing with a cold weather. Seems today it's been a bit better (but they didn't play indoors, did they?) so hopefully weather forecasters were wrong as usually.

Ahh sorry to hear that about your home Challenger :awww: They've spoiled all fun for you! That's sad but it happens from time to time when some Challengers hardly find enough players to complete the main draw... Hopefully Ostrava is supposed to have a great future ;)

Where did you go for holiday? :)
Lovely Prague? Ehh in fact I'd prefer something with the sun, sea and beaches for this summer but we never know

Tulipe
07-16-2008, 09:19 AM
I know that if the player withdraws, the supervisor puts the lucky loser into the draw and when the player comes to the office (they usually come once a day to check), the supervisor tells him he's in. So I suppose the other player also realizes that when he comes to the office. But as I saw, some players come there often and some never  Nico came to the office once, then went out on the balcony next to the office to watch some play on the court below, and there was also one French chair umpire sunbathing on the balcony. Then he went out and closed the door when Nico was still there. I was just watching that scene, I was bored at the moment in the office, so I kept on looking at Nico (what else should I do when I'm bored?) and suddenly I had the feeling something is wrong. So I was thinking: "What's wrong here?" and then it came to my mind: "He closed the door and there's no handle on the other side of the door!" So I had to go and open the door so Nico could get away from there :haha: So I understand players are afraid to come to the office if it has so dangerous places and people :D

That's surely a pity, JMDP is not an unbeatable player. Maybe Nicolas should have played more long rallies against him and wait until he retires  Anyway it was nice to actually watch the match, see Nico smiling being down 0-40 at his service and sometimes even playing serve and volley game.
