Though I know that cooking a paella takes a long time, I really do wish that the title of the thread has something true in it.....

 I'm loving the thread name though.

And even though I am still mad at Gaston, cause he is not coming here to defend his title. :( I wish him all the luck ( of course ) not only for this tournament, but for all the clay court season.

Time to show you're still alive, no Gaston?

Gaston won 7-6 (6) 7-6 (3)

He had breaks and lost them and of course went the long way around, but in the 1st set he was down a break and got through.

As I said, it's all match practice and now he plays the tricky and geeky German Mayer who beat him in Estoril once.

He has a day off and good luck for Wednesday.

I was scared about this match (when am I not scared? ;) ) because I know how long Gastón takes to get into the swing of a tournament. So, now that I know the result, I think two tiebreakers is very good practice! :D

I can't believe it! None of the three Argentine channels that show tennis has scheduled Valencia!!! My only hope is that if Gastón continues through the week they may change their tiny minds. :( Davydenko and Ferrer are out, but unfortunately they're not in Gastón's half of the draw!

Apparently he arrived in Valencia less than 24 hs before his match, which seems cutting it pretty fine.

!Hola from sunny Valencia! :wavey:

Yes, our man got part of his game back. Higher % in services - in R1 it was like 1 DF for each game.
Like in the R1, it was more on the other side - Sluiter and Mayer both started well but they could not quite maintain it - very typical of them.

I´ve seen a few practice sessions of Gaston. On Sunday he hit with Sanguinetti and after that always with Franco. One thing I noticed is that there is no "mini-soccer" or things like that. Gaston occasionally smiles or laughs but he is still far away from enjoying. But his game improved a lot since R1, so I hope he is on the right track.

I watch tomorrow´s QF and then leave for Monte Carlo on Saturday. Hopefully I have to miss Gaston´s SF and Final. Vamooooooooooos, Gaston!

Looking forward to seeing some of you guys in MC. :)

Hi, great to hear from you, Reiko! :D And thank you for the update!
In his press conference Gastón said he was happy after today´s match, and the statistics seem to show he´s getting his game back. It makes me sad to hear he still seems different compared to his previous attitude, at least during training, that he´s still not too happy, that´s why this tournament is SO important!
He seems to have a great deal of respect for Safin, who´s playing great, but they´re also friends, so I hope we get a great match!
We can´t see it in Argentina, unfortunately. Are any of you able to watch it?

VAMOS GASTON, PLAY GREAT TOMORROW!!!

sorry, but i a, happy for Marat even i love Gaudio! :)

Some good match practice for Gaston, now time to lift the game at the first of the big tournaments coming up, got outplayed and no shame in that.

I've been surprised too Claudia. WTA was scheduled instead but a good tip at the right moment helped me not miss that match. :)

Well, 6/4 6/4 for Marat. What can be said except that Marat was too good today, that Gaston gave points when he shouldn't, that he didn't convert his opportunities. It wasn't a bad match, but it wasn't enough against Marat. Yes, our guy was talkative, expressed his frustration the way we are used to see him. He even made me laugh when, after a footfault, he asked the lineswoman which foot it was!!

Marat varied the effects a lot and Gaston even seemed to have trouble returning 2nd serves. In the 1st set, he was far behind the baseline. He just couldn't do much placed there. In the 2nd set, he was more aggressive, coming into the court, which explains why Marat broke but late in the set.
Anyway, I think it was a great Marat today and he is my fave for the final now. :)

Thanks for the report Choupi and now he can prepare for Monte Carlo, there is still time or him to find his game, but the steps needed to be taken now.
Of course, he still has time.

But something has to change, maybe in his head. Gaston is lacking confidence I think. This time last year he had two titles, and was playing good. I don't know, but something he has to do. Because if Gaston can't do well during the clay season, then where will he do?

Or maybe he is just not in the mood, I dunno. Argentines are so complicated.

I hope he can do well in Monte Carlo.
