Haas was really the only true danger player, and Andy drew him in the QF :help:. Marcos being his semifinal opponent doesn't help either, but something tells me Marcos won't be as potent of a player on the dirt, he'll probably lose and not hold his seed. The biggest and only test for Andy is his QF against Haas and I really do not like his chances. Haas killed him in the 04 finals, and Haas is playing much better while Andy is playing worse.:o Bah who knows maybe he will sirprise us :p.

Well it's Houston. Andy's capable of doing good things there. Tommy beat him there in the final 2 years ago, I was there, and Andy was dead tired (having just won Miami then Davis Cup) and still had chances in that match. Andy shouldn't be tired like that this year, and Tommy hasn't played for a while so who knows what will happen. Andy has tough matches before then anyway - Capdeville is no pushover and neither is Marach who he'd play in the 2nd round.

Paul Capdeville of Chile? hmmm.....
Might be a struggle... :tape:Yeah, but people also say that he's better on faster courts. I wasn't particularly blown away by his game against James yesterday - he gets balls back but doesn't really have much of a weapon, so I mean if Andy plays his game, even on clay, he should be OK.

Anyway, Dougie updated :)

Davis Cup was a success with Andy winning two big matches as the US Davis Cup team beat Chile. It was a great weekend and Andy really played two great matches. We are now in Houston for the US Clay Court Championships. That makes 3 different surfaces in 3 weeks for Andy. That can be pretty tough not only on making adjustments in your tennis game, but can be very difficult on the body. We go from the grass to long points on the clay and the footwork and movement is totally different. It is a big adjustment for Andy but he will be ready to play on Tuesday night.

Andy and James really need to do well on the mud considering that they have a Muddy DC program ahead. Andy has being developping topspin à la Nadal, want to see how it works ;) Both Andy and James only have to improve their patience and James really needs a win in a 5 setter and if it comes on clay the better it is.

So I pray for an Andy vs James in the final :yeah:

Blurb from the Houston paper
============
Roddick loves surface

Fresh from playing the hero for the U.S. Davis Cup team in California, Andy Roddick spent 90 minutes on the Gallery Furniture Stadium court, then pronounced it fixed.

Good thing, considering Westside spent half a million dollars redoing the red-clay surfaces after last year's myriad problems.

"For four years it was a great court, then they had an off year, but this year it's back to being exceptional," Roddick said. "I felt bad for Linda ( McIngvale, the club's owner/director) because the players who played here for the first time, that was going to be their first impression of this event."

Westside is practically Roddick's second home, and he is very close with Jim McIngvale and his wife. He admitted he hated to be a critic but noted, "They weren't exactly in denial about it."

Roddick rolls to clay-court victory
Defending champion sweeps past Capdeville, catches pass from Texas QB
The Associated Press
Updated: 10:47 p.m. ET April 11, 2006

HOUSTON - Defending champion Andy Roddick raised his game in the second set and took an easy 6-3, 6-2 victory over Paul Capdeville of Chile Tuesday night in the first round of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship.

Then, Roddick had another thrill: catching a pass from University of Texas quarterback Vince Young in a charity exhibition following the match. Young, expected to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft later this month, made an appearance at the tournament and played toss with Roddick.

“It was easy, I could put my hands there and it fell in,” Roddick said. “It felt soft. I was afraid I’d drop it. If I had I’d have been the dork but he put it right on the money. I’m just glad I could come up with it.”

Second-seeded James Blake met Antony Dupuis of France in a later first-round match. Blake has a 22-8 match record and two titles this year although he lost two singles matches for the United States in last week’s Davis Cup quarterfinals match with Chile.

Roddick took charge in the fifth game of the second set. After a forehand error by Roddick put the score at deuce, Roddick hit consecutive drop shot winners to break Capdeville for a 3-2 lead.              Capdeville won only four more points in the final three games.

Roddick won it at the first match point when Capdeville could not return a serve, boosting his record on clay in Houston to 24-2 over the past six years.

“You come in, you know the setup, it feels like home,” Roddick said. “You get into your routine and it definitely helps.”:)

Roddick started the match by losing his serve:o but quickly recovered.:yeah: With the score at 30-30, Roddick hit a net chord that bounced out of bounds and then sent a backhand wide to lose the opening game.

“I felt pretty good all the way around, except for that first game,” Roddick said.

Roddick broke back in the second game on Capdeville’s forehand error and Roddick broke again in the fourth game, allowing Capdeville only one point in the game for a 2-1 lead.

Roddick is looking for his first ATP tournament victory this year, although he won singles matches over Nicolas Massu and Fernando Gonzalez of Chile last week to advance the United States to the Davis Cup semifinals against Russia. The Davis Cup matches were played on grass.

“I felt pretty good coming off of last weekend,” Roddick said. “The transition coming off grass last week to clay was pretty evident in this match but I thought if I could get through this one I’d be all right.

Roddick has reached the clay court tournament finals five straight years with three titles, including last year’s 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sebastien Grosjean of France.

HOUSTON (AP) - Defending champion Andy Roddick raised his game in the second set and took an easy 6-3, 6-2 victory over Paul Capdeville of Chile Tuesday night in the first round of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship.

Then, Roddick had another thrill: catching a pass from University of Texas quarterback Vince Young in a charity exhibition following the match. Young, expected to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft later this month, made an appearance at the tournament and played toss with Roddick.

Second-seeded James Blake, trying to rebound from two Davis Cup losses last week, couldn't get past Antony Dupuis of France, who used a strong serve for a 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1 upset. Blake is ranked No. 8 in the world. Dupuis is 159th.

Roddick has reached the clay court tournament finals five straight years with three titles, including last year's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sebastien Grosjean of France.

After losing a tie-breaker first set, Blake rallied in the second set, breaking Dupuis in the fourth and sixth game to take control. The Frenchman broke Blake in the fourth game of the final set for a 3-1 lead and Blake made his final stand in the fifth game when he took Dupuis to four break points before Dupuis held.

"It's tough to do from Davis Cup the highs and lows and come to a different surface,'' Blake said. "It's part of the job but I think I'm getting better at it. He served great. That took me out of my rhythm.''

Unfotunatelly they share their MOJO. When one is using it the other slumps. Can we clone it?

Young shows off arm

Though his mother was a fine tennis player, Texas Longhorns hero Vince Young says he never tried to play the game except casually on occasion as a kid. Nonetheless, as Jim McIngvale's invited guest, Young made a predictably big splash at Westside on Tuesday night, throwing a few passes between the Andy Roddick and James Blake matches.

Young threw one of them perfectly to Roddick, who ran a length-of-the-court pattern.

"If I'd have dropped that one, I would have been a total dork," Roddick said.

He, in turn, blasted a serve past Young, just to show him his stuff. Having become an Austin resident when he's not globe-trotting on the ATP Tour, Roddick is gradually being transformed into a Longhorns fan after rooting for Nebraska (where he was born) since childhood.

Roddick's grab, by the way, meant $10,000 to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Texas ex McIngvale, who owns the tennis club and Gallery Furniture, convinced Young to fling the football around for a good cause. For every "completion," Mattress Mack told Young he'd donate 10 grand to the cancer center. McIngvale ended up being on the hook for $40,000.

Triple Olympic medalist Chad Hedrick of Spring also made a Gallery Furniture Stadium appearance.

Roddick escaped one break point in the sixth game of the second set but finally held on Maranch's backhand error. Roddick ended the match with an ace. Roddick hit 70 per cent of his first serves.

"I was a little low on energy all day," Roddick said. "I wasn't expecting back to backs but I understand why. I'm glad to have a day off before I play Tommy (Haas) on Friday."

Roddick lost to Haas in the finals of the 2004 clay court event. Roddick says he's ready for a good performance.

Blurb about Friday's QF:
Old friends

Tommy Haas wasn't crazy about having to play Alexander Waske on Wednesday, and he's even less crazy about facing Andy Roddick on Friday.
Waske is a good friend and German Davis Cup team doubles partner, while the top-seeded Roddick has beaten Haas in three straight meetings.

"It's always hard to play somebody you know really well," Haas said of Waske, who started poorly and lost 6-1, 7-6 (7). "And Andy's got a little bit of an edge over me now."

Girl? Who said anything about girl? I was talking about Mardy.

I've read through the stories and interviews so far this week and I see 3 possible scenarios...

1. Mardy is 'staying with' Andy thus Andy is playing very well, and, sadly, James is not. (Mardy, after winning Tallahassee on Sunday, is feeling quite vigorous).

2. James is 'staying with' Andy as he did all weekend, which is taking so much of his energy that Andy is playing well (since last Friday) and sadly, James is not.

3. Andy and James were together Sunday. James and Mardy were together Monday. Andy and Mardy were together Tuesday, and Andy was a little bit tired for his match on Wednesday. It's getting a bit complicated and I really think it's time to bring Robby into this arrangement to create some stability and help Robby play better. It's no coincedence that all of these guys are skipping Monte Carlo. I think they got a great off-season deal on a Fire Island bungalow (tennis court included).

Anyway, back to tennis.

The fact that some people in GM get all excited when a clay courter beats James Blake in the first round but get all snooty and dismissive when Roddick wins two clay matches back to back after making a rather quick transition from grass.

Whine of the Week
There's a thread over at Tennis Warehouse called "Myths Perpetrated by This Board." A thread like that should be started over here because the myth that 1) Roddick is the worst player on clay; and 2) that Roddick has the worst backhand on tour is getting mighty tiresome and old. :o

Well again very off topic BUT that's what I loved about Penn and Teller in Vegas- they personally greeted every attendee at their show. And made my kids feel very special. That's why I like it when players treat the kids who are their fans nicely. I know everyone is allowed a bad day but to take it out on youngsters when those players are only practicing leaves a very bad taste in my mouth :( After a loss I can understand more their need to get away although I think those players who lose and stay to sign autographs are more special and deserve more of my attention.

I had a pretty good time at the Houston tournament in 2003. When Jan-Mike forgot to leave my tickets for me (he thought I was coming Tuesday, not Monday, he's a bit dense with details sometimes), it was Linda who came out to give me my ticket. She was talking to him a little bit later on her cell phone and waived me over to take the phone and tease him about the whole thing. Mac was walking around selling programs every day that I was there, and helping people find courts and bathrooms and such. All the players I spoke to that year had a great time. Doesn't hurt that the Macs give points to the guys for every 'fan event' they do and then give away prizes for the guys with the most points (big screen TV's and such).

Mac's odd reputation doesn't come from the tournament, it comes from the first year that he hosted the Masters and the unfortunate incidents around Federer and Agassi, including that horrendous speech during the trophy presentation that just about ignored Fed. But, it's water under the bridge, Fed has stated repeatedly that he's over it, and no matter what the clay court snobs who have never been say, Houston is a good tournament that treats the players and fans well.

Vinnay will probably beat Mardy - he'd be plenty tough for Andy on clay but Andy has Tommy anyway so no sense looking past that yet

That's what sucks about it no matter who it was to :( Andy used to have the best serve in the game, he lost serve what, at least 4 times in this match? I can't just say "Too bad" about that. Andy . I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that this was played on clay. IN one way you can look at his wasted chances to close Haas out, but considering he's playing on his worst/most hated surface, and having chances to even take this match and pushing Haas to the wire is encouragin, well to me at least .

Haas was the ONLY player who stood in Andy's way, and it's like the 272047493th time i say this but whatever: CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WAS A QUARTERFINALS MATCH!!!!

I just wish he ca find some sort of magic on the Euro clay and make like a bunch of 3r . That's all I'm asking for Andy, so don't be a bitch and make me happy!

True. The problem is he won't start winning these type of close matches against solid players until he wins one and he has no confidence that he can win against them in that situation

It is an endless, vicious cycle...........

Blame it on the draw, honestly :o. I know it's Houston and all, and I think that's what made it such a close match and he could have won it. It's a small step back for sure, but could you imagine the early 2006 Roddick in this match ?:help: He'd have lost even easier than he did vs Haas here in 2004 :scared:.

Maybe straight sets but still, Andy had chances and blew them. Plus that time, he had won a TON of matches, San Jose, Miami titles, Davis Cup, he was physically DEAD TIRED. Not so this year. I know the draw sucked, and it did. That match shouldn't have been a QF at this event (obviously not, it was the final 2 yrs ago) but that doesn't matter. It was a huge match for Andy mentally and he even SAID SO beforehand and he still blew all the opportunities. So it just sucks for him - it's just one more big blow no matter how you look at it

But Naldo at least that was a final and it was AGASSI. At least he idolizes Agassi, losing to him of all people is not nearly as bad. He'd turned around his h2h against Tommy and still didn't have the confidence to put it away at the tourney where he probably feels the most comfortable mentally on the whole tour - all his friends and famiy, the comforts of home, etc.

Haas beats Roddick to reach semifinal

4/14/2006 11:46:00 PM

HOUSTON (AP) - Fifth-seeded Tommy Haas dominated Andy Roddick on clay again, beating the No. 1 seed a fourth straight time in a quarterfinal match Friday night at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship.

Haas rallied from one set down to win 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-4 in a matchup that Roddick said could have been the final. It was two years ago.

Roddick had two chances to break Haas in the final game, but he was unable to return Haas' serve and got aced on the second opportunity. Haas closed out the match two points later. He hit a forehand winner that cleaned the line and a forehand by Roddick hit the tape but the ball bounced back on his side.

``In some ways you wish it was a final,'' Haas said. ``When you play in front a full crowd that's what you work for. That's why it's fun.''

Haas will play American Mardy Fish in one semifinal Saturday.

Seventh-seeded Paul Goldstein of the United States plays Austria's Jurgen Melzer in the other semifinal.

Haas, from Germany, beat Roddick twice on clay in 2002 in Monte Carlo and Rome, and again in 2004 in the finals here.

Roddick failed to reach the finals for the first time in six years. :crying2: The big points of the match were won, not lost, he said.

``This is the first time I've left Houston on Friday,'' he said, adding that he'd be on his boat on Lake Austin Saturday. ``I'm mad but I'm not upset, if that makes sense.  There are minimal questions I asked myself after that match.''

Roddick led 4-3 in the second set and had two chances on Haas' serve in the eighth game - the longest of the match - to set up himself to serve for the match. But Haas stiffened to win the game and then won eight straight points to close out the set, 6-4.

Haas needed just five points to break Roddick in his second service game of the third set to go up 2-1. But Roddick broke right back to level it.

In the seventh game Haas needed just one break chance to go up 4-3 and he did it in flashy fashion. Haas barely returned the serve to his backhand and Roddick volleyed the ball wide to the other side. The German sprinted the width of the court and hit a down the line winner on the run to go up 4-3.

Haas' passing shots weren't plentiful but they were timely.

``I managed to get there and sneak a few by him which didn't give him confidence to continue serving and volleying,'' he said. ``It's always nice to beat Andy, especially here where he's won so many times.''

Roddick watched helplessly as Haas' accurate groundies went past.

``I don't know how many passing shots he hit from 8 feet behind the baseline,'' he said. ``All I can do is put myself in the best position and if he comes up with the goods, he wins.''

I'm new here but I've been lurking for a while so hi :wavey: .

Anyone see the match? Cause from what I saw from the livescores he failed to convert crucial breakpoints and that made a huge difference.

Anyways, I can see many are upset, and you have every right to be. It seemed like he was making progress wasn't he? Davis Cup madness, he adjusted to clay coming from grass surprisingly easy, and he didn't lose to some dude rank 150 in the world for the second tournament in a row. And then he goes and ruin that by losing to Haas which just proves my theory about Andy being a slow learner. He's a two steps forward, one step back kind of guy and those kind of athletes can be maddening to cheer for. :banghead:

I'm not that upset that he lost. Normally I would be screaming "You idiot!" at my computer but I didn't feel the urge to. Maybe it's years of being a Red Sox fan(if you follow baseball you know exactly what that means) that has made me more paitient with my favorites if they are going through a rough patch. Either way, he should analyze this loss with the people around him and go after those breakpoints more(I think he had that same problem in Nasdaq too against Ferrer)

I hope this post made any type of sense.

Hey Jade Fox :wavey: Nice to see that you're not lurking anymore (:

You just basically summed up what was wrong with that match from what anyone could tell due to the lack of coverage like anywhere. I think he's more of a one step forward, four steps backward myself. But that's me just being bitchy since i'ven ot slept d:

I'm not upset he lost, i'm annoyed he didn't win a match he really should have. Not that Haas isn't good, i knew the match was going to be tough, but from how the match was actually panning out last night, he should've brought it home. But he didn't. Like so many times recently.

He needs to like buy a return on Ebay or something and soon.

Hi Jade Fox! Great to see you de-lurk :) I'm from Boston, I understand you perfectly ;) And I know what you mean. It's not that he lost. If he lost real badly or just had a really awful night where he played horribly and it was a bad day and he lost real badly, it wouldn't be the same. It's that he often wins the first set (his record of matches lost when he has won the first set is really disconcerting) and then can't put away the match when it's tight and he has chances. Or he'll lose the first set and fight hard to come back but still not be able to put it away.

He absolutely still plays tentatively on BPs, as evidenced most recently by the match in Davis Cup against Massu. And the fact that he was serve-volleying on clay down break point shows that, while he may have made some progress, he still has a looooooooooooong way to go. Andy at his best would have smashed a big serve and had a big forehand putaway on a break point - regardless of surface. Andy of 2003 would not have serve-volleyed on a huge BP at the end of the third set or whenever it was, especially not to a guy with timing and groundstrokes and passing shots like Tommy's.

He's definitely fighting better and not fading away like he was at some parts last year, but at the really big points, it's the same old thing still.
