 Tommy Girl that is quite a place you have. It kind of reminds me of a show that used to be on American TV. The
show was called "Cheers" and it was about a bar that people went to where "everyone knows your name'. I must admit while the show was a big hit in the U.S. I really didn't like it that much  I just didn't see how they kept making shows about this same group of people that were always in that one bar

Cool, I loved Cheers! :bounce: But mainly I liked the earlier seasons, I didn't like the later ones so much anymore. The truely best time of the series IMO was when 'Coach' was still part of the cast, but then he passed away some time (not in the story, but for real) and the series lost a great character

Oh yes, this show really ran a lot of times in Germany already, nothing new at all. Currently it's on Kabel 1. Was shown on RTL, Sat.1, Premiere, lots of channels already. You may know Woody Harrelson or Kelsey Grammar ("Frasier").
But you don't need to worry that you missed a must-see. I think it really depends on your liking, if you like such a kind of comedy show or not (I for my part don't like "Eine schrecklich nette Familie", "Seinfeld", but like "Hör mal wer da hämmert, "Alf" or "Alle unter einem Dach" )

Glad to hear you like Frasier, too. Yes, I think that you can call it a spinoff for sure. When Cheers was about to end, some writers already had the plans for Frasier in their pockets and I think they started with the production in the same year Cheers ended. Also Kelsey Grammar played the psychologist Dr. Frasier Crane in Cheers, so there are many links to Frasier. And lots of guest appearances in Frasier from the former cast of Cheers, like Lilith, the barkeepers of Cheers and such stuff. But when I remember correctly, Frasier said in Cheers he is a single child while he has a brother in 'Frasier'. And Cheers plays in Boston. But still many links.

ok, so that could be a spinoff. So Niles didn't appear on cheers? He's soo funny on Frasier  I am glad Sat 1 shows the show again after they didn't show it for a longer term. A few times, but not so regularly. It wasn't so good, I think.
But some things were funny, I always liked this blind guy when he was involved in jokes, for example

Becker is played by the same guy that was the owner (in the early seasons) and barkeeper of 'Cheers', the main character of the series. And in Becker I knew Reggie best as Dax from Deep Space Nine because this is my favourite Star Trek series and I loved it. :)

How German TV looks like, depends on the channel :rolls: Some channels are mainly political, german productions (like a few soaps or telenovelas) and only very few American series or movies, big sports event of big national interest are also shown there(Olympics, soccer, winter sports), such as the two big state channels (ARD, ZDF).
Then you have some big private channels (RTL, SAT1, PRO7), their programm on weekdays in the morning and afternoon mainly consists of talkshows, law shows, documentation and daily soaps and in the evening they usually show a mix of mostly German and American series. And two private channels (VOX, Kabel1) usually show (almost) only American series from morning to evening: in the morning they start with Dallas or Denver Clan, Kojak, two episodes of King of Queens, Married with Children, Alf, Our little farm, Emergency Room, Miami Vice, Star Trek, Home Improvement and on Monday evenings you have for example CSI: NY, Criminal Intent, X-Files, Crossing Jordan, Outer Limits and a few more that I forgot  So on some channels you have almost only US series ;)

And I'm not sure if a German series would be successful in the US, maybe a few good ones  I guess the US simply don't need to import many series from non-English countries, they produce so much themselves! That could be why you don't see any.

It sounds like you have very good TV. I'm sure now that I think of it the main problem would be the language in having German shows coming to the U.S. Since I doubt that there are all that many American that can understand German well, the shows would have to be dubbed or sub-titled. And neither of those tend to work out too well IMO  Now since the U.S. has so many Spanish speaking people in our country we do have channels just in Spanish for them. Oh course I don't know any Spanish either!

they show the US shows in German translation. I would prefer english with subtitles but that isn't an option in Germany. I really watch a lot of us-series and I am glad, that they show them all, but I always prefer watching them in english. Friends for example was not funny at all in german but I adore the show in english.

I also enjoying Germany TV program. I noticed in German TV is that American shows are really very good dubbed for usually. There are lot that are very good with dubbing translation. And even comedy shows can be funny and you have to think that humour is not so good for translation. What is funny and a joke in English could be lost in translation. And every series do normally have the same voice for the same person and different voices for others persons. In Poland many many of USA series are only bad translated by a speaking person that is not doing pay attention to the lip movement of the people and who often speaks for all people in the series. You hear the original language in background and translation voice in foreground. But problem is you can hear a man voice in translation for women voice in the series. And that is bad :o

We don't have that kind of problems in Serbia, beacuse every series or movie are sub-titled, so you here original voices and read!! Now they dubbed Ice age 2 and it might turn out to be good!!

It's so funny to watch German tv!! :D I used to watch 'the nanny' synchronised in German! The voice of the nanny in america is so funny and annoying  but in german it's ok..!
but still i think you're missing out a lot of fun when it's synchronised!!

I'll do my best to find a hot man and a hot woman!! :yeah:

I have never heard of the show. Dubbed sound can't be easy to do and it can be usually too slow. And you see the person's mouth move before you hear anything. It's funny for a little while, but then it just seems to ruin the show. And I guess why I don't like sub-titles is I'm not used to them. I will run across them every once in a while in a movie, but I can't watch the movie because I'm looking at the sub-titles. And if I watch the movie I'm not reading the sub-titles so I never can follow a movie like that so I just turn it off  I personally could never watch The Nanny because of the actress' voice, but then other people thought that was one of the things that made that show funny

you don't know prison break? in holland they say it's a huge series in the usa!

i think why you don't like subtitles is because you're not used to it! all the nice things are spoken in your language.. i'm just used to it since i was little.. and when i grew older i could understand the series, but it's easier to just read the sub titles..

they show the US shows in German translation. I would prefer english with subtitles but that isn't an option in Germany. I really watch a lot of us-series and I am glad, that they show them all, but I always prefer watching them in english. Friends for example was not funny at all in german but I adore the show in english.
Yeah, I know what you mean. But only the Pay-TV channels usually offer this option, you can select different audio channels then. Surpringly, what many people don't know, it's even forbidden for the German TV channels that can be received outside of Germany in other parts of Europe to broadcast in original language due to legal restrictions (maybe they would need to buy additional rights?!).

really? I never heard of that. So they only buy the "light" version, which should be cheaper I think.

I'm not sure what they would need to do and what they buy. Yes, maybe cheaper, that could be very well. But I've read in an article some months ago in "TV Spielfilm" and they said that televising a series or a movie in original language makes so many problems in Germany because lots of the programs can be received for free outside of Germany in other parts of Europe and legal restrictions generally don't allow that. They said that for example SF DRS or ORF are allowed to do that because their programs are mostly encrypted via satellite.

I feel sure they would have to pay additional rights which would cost more money. And they probably don't want to spend the additional money. Seems like everyone wants to keep things as cheap as possible

I like cafe!! I am for sub-title because you can learn foreign language and plus you practise reading, especally those languages which are not fonetic, you get used to watch movie and read!! The Nanny was funny because if her voice, I watched on german TV it wasn't funny!!!

Well I kind of guessed that it was an American series because it is about Superman. But I have never even heard of it let alone seen it. I wonder what channel in the U.S. carries it?

I think to be a salesperson no matter what you are selling you do better if you have an outgoing personality, if you understand what I mean? I don't know if you use that term
"outgoing personality" where you live.

great, a free visa card? I never heard that! you mean a visa card without charges?
because often when you have credit card you must pay a charge each year for using it

are you selling single papers or a membership to a paper (when you get it every day or every week automaticly)

The visa card normally costs like 30 dollars for 1 year, i think that's what you mean!? so i give the people a free membership for 1 year! i never heard of it before aswell, till i got this job ;)
and the papers... i give the people a free paper of that day, if they're willing to listen to my offer.. so they can become a member for a period of 1 year, 6 months or 3 months..!

and everytime they want it, i get a bonus!!
i just had a very good month!! :o :D

I like living here. The university is more of a "Pendler Uni", where people from the whole region visit it and don't live here. But there is a huge nighlife and a lot of students that also live here.

I am going offline now, cause a friends of mine is visiting me. We will make a "Jamie Oliver" cooking session and will later watch my O.C dvd box ;)

Hey that's great, the cooking I mean!!! (never saw O.C.) I also love to cook a lot and with lots of variations, especially when I have time :yeah:

Sometimes, I also watch or try some things which was shown on some cooking TV shows before, such as Tim Mälzer's. I also liked Ralf Zacherl A LOT, but his show is off now (not so much a fan of "Perfect diner" or these kind of shows).

Apropos... because we recently talked about dubbing, German TV shows and because I read now "Jamie Oliver". His show "Oliver's Twist" that runs on German television is by far the worst dubbed show which I know, and this is very rare :o On the other hand, I'm grateful for the translation because I don't know many 'Zutaten' and their English names :p

Yes it is funny  You are watching thinking they are speaking your language and you wonder why it is that you can't understand them. I felt silly :silly: So I stop watching the show. I have only seen bits and pieces of it recently so I know I can now understand him :) I think the people with the show realized the people in the U.S. couldn't understand him so I figure he had to work on his speaking. It is something all the different accents in England. I mean we have some differences here in the U.S. , but generally everyone can understand each other. I wonder if the people in England can understand each other? I like to listen to the British upper class. I think they speak English like it is supposed to be spoken. Snob that I am, I guess

but when you go to london after that, they have a complete other dialect.
but i think everyone can understand each other!!

Oh there again going from country to country with all ease.
It would take me a long time to get to any part of Europe, if I had the money to go. But I guess since I don't have the money to go it doesn't matter

we have a nice program where the host of the show has to help a cook prepare a dinner in 1000 seconds.. with different ingredients every week, that's fun to watch!
 haha, that sounds funny too :)
do they start from zero in that show or do they have usually some things prepared in advance?
I mean, it's unpossible to cook something with potatos then, for example. First you would have to peel them, and then cook. 1000 seconds are usually already gone then :) So I would be interested to know how they handle it ;)

Jamie isn't German. He is English and he is the guy that I said while he was speaking English that I couldn't understand him  I don't see how you could make anything in 1000 seconds  I agree with Neely either somethings are done in advance or they are very careful about what they are cooking

 Ok... ehm i know who jamie is
but i meant ->

Hey I also liked Zacherl, but he only does that show "Die Hochprofis" now with these other guys. Tim Melzer is a bit boring and arrogant I think, bt his show is ok. (I watch perfect diner by the way ;) )
But my favorite is Jamie Oliver, I like his show, although it's really terribly dubbed. I like watching "kerners köche" ass well, I think Johann Lafer is so funny

never heard of all those german cooks!! (is cook the normal word for the occupation of jamie??)

I meant zacherl, tim melzer & lafer  :o
i used jamie in the same sentence because i didnt know for sure if cook was the right word for his occupation! :o

As I told, every week there are other ingredients..
The cook has to prepare a starter, main dish & desert

everything has to be done in the 16 min & 40 sec ( ;) )

for example the cook made: (it's difficult to translate the ingredients to english!! )
- starter: calves oister filled with crab
- main dish: some salad with some kind of fish i cant translate, mussels, and another fish. dressing of orange, lemon spices etc.
- desert: yoghurt shake with frozen cranberries, banana and almonds

So of course he needs things which can be prepared in the 1000 seconds.. but he has to choose the combinations himself..!!

Ah it is all things which don't require what Neely was talking about like taking a lot of the time to peel potatoes.
What you described sounds very good ;)
