Because its the same week as Houston, and I would bet that the Macs have offered him a wildcard.

Fine Mardy, you are forgiven this time. But just this time.

On the tournament's own site at http://www.paseochallenger.com/ (utterly useless, aimed only at prospective sponsors, not even a draw let alone results) it gives the telephone number as (661) 257-0044.

Hope that helps!

Widom, Becker and Kim did not play.

The only result I can really get was that Cleveland won his match.

Thanks for calling, but -oops- I should have realised you were interested in main draw matches and asked you to find out the final qualifying round results - especially the first one (Rettermaier-Delgado)

Ah well, I guess they'll post it sometime in the next 24 hours if we're lucky!

You're joking right? That is an official ATP document, you can trust that the matches will begin at 10 am Pacific Daylight Time. Your math is off. Check www.timeanddate.com to convert to your local time. If it's not raining, matches will start about 35 minutes from the time of my post.

Good to know. Valencia is up the mountains just a bit, at a higher elevation, so its possible it could be cloudy there. Do you see anything off to the North-eastish area? Lurking and looking to cause trouble? ;)

He probably could have made it on time, since a flight from Heathrow to Los Angeles leaves England Monday morning and arrives in LA Monday afternoon (not sure if he could fly direct from Scotland). More than likely he was just too spent to take on the trip. Where is he playing next week? That might have had an affect on his decision too. I think Ilja is playing a few tournaments in the US and South America, so it might make more sense for him to do the trip, even if the first bit of it is a little rough on him.

Why has Arv pulled out, there was nothing wrong with him on Sunday!
When I first found this out, I could think of 7 possible reasons:

a) he injured himself doing his victory dance
b) he didn't book a plane in advance and couldn't get a flight in time
c) he got scared when he saw he could face Boggo in R2 (maybe not! - and I would have liked to see that match)
d) get beaten up on the plane over to America by Bozoljac
e) he decided that as the winner of a DC match, he's too good for those crappy old Challenger tournaments now!
f) he's retired while he's on top?
g) he decided he was too knackered

I'm inclined to think Fee got it right - i.e. he was tired and it no longer seemed worth it because of his schedule in the coming weeks - in fact, he's down to play in the Cardiff Challenger back over here next week. It's a pity he didn't play here while on a bit of a confidence high though.

RadioTennis.com Announces 3-Day Coverage of the Santa Clarita Men's Challenger.
Valencia, CA. USA: April 14, 15 & 16, 2006.

RadioTennis.com is pleased to announce LIVE 3-day coverage of the 2006 Men's Challenger of Santa Clarita. This is a USTA $50,000 Professional Circuit Event.

The tournament will be played at the beautiful Paseo Club (www.thepaseoclub.com) which is located in Valencia, California, USA.

The LIVE web cast schedule is as follows:

Friday: April 14: 11:30 AM ( Pacific - USA).
Saturday: April 15: 9:30 AM (Pacific - USA).
Sunday: April 16: 9:30 AM ( Pacific - USA).

"This is the real deal," states RadioTennis.com's Ken Thomas. "These guys are ranked between 100 and 200 in the world. They are dedicated to their craft, they're in tremendous shape, they play hard to the very last point, and when it's over they shake hands, pick up their bag, and move on to the next tour stop. These are the guys that grind it out every week somewhere around the globe. In my opinion, Challenger level tennis is some of the best tennis in the world, because all these young men realize that they're just a few good tournament results away from breaking it wide open, and securing a place in the draws of the Grand Slam and Master Series events. The passion is there and it makes for extremely compelling tennis. I would like to invite the international tennis community to click-on this weekend and join us. It promises to be three great days of professional tennis from sunny Southern California. "

Main draw players include:

Justin Gimelstob: #94: USA:
Yen-Hsun Lu: #118: TPE:
Kevin Kim: # 121: USA:

Jeff Morrison: #146: USA:
Rik De Voest # 152: RSA:

Gregory Carraz: #191: FRA:

For our Australian listeners, we want to point out that one of your "mates" is the tournament director of this fine event. The one and only Brad Sceney is the man at the helm. You Aussie's may remember that he won the Australian Open junior doubles title a few years back. He and an American named Desi McBride (a fine player himself) are responsible for making this tournament happen.

As for today's matches, is there any chance to follow the scores?

Fee
04-12-2006, 07:37 PM
Sorry no. As a rule, US Challengers don't have live scoring. The USTA runs so many circuit tournaments during the year, they just don't shell out the bucks for that type of thing and maintaining websites is usually a low priority for the clubs that host these events (I worked at one of them last year and learned this first hand).

CooCoo, I actually started following him last year. He's a bit older - I think 26 or 27. After a successful college career he went into teaching. Then like early last year or so, he was beating up some of the top juniors that he was helping to train in Florida, and somebody told him "dude, you need to get out there and start playing some futures."

So, he started at the bottom of the barrell, and after a few tournaments was working his way through future qaulies and gradually had more success in main draws. I think he won one or two towards the end of last year, and now looks like he's trying to make his way into challengers.

Good story. Go Tyler!

I've just emailed them to ask them to give us the Boggo score instead of just mentioning that he's playing from time to time. Not sure if they read their emails though!

He is the most boring commentator around ("Good serve, oh good return" etc) but full marks to them for giving us live commentary from a Challenger event (for which I can forgive the commentator quite a lot!) and giving us a laugh at the same time.

Just give us the Boggo score and you'll be a real star! LOL

i agree, i think he'd be happy to make the sf's but disapointed to lose in the qf's with the 5 points he has to defend, the 7 points won wont improve him much, but the 17 for the sf would bump him to a career high i think.

So they're that close and still he won't tell us the score? :(

I think he might just get a career high anyway, the points he's on now would have made him 140th in the current ranking list - his CH is 141. But clearly he needs to win at least the QF here to continue making good progress.

Remember (dippykitty and Count Zero definitely will) how we were listening to the Bozoljac QF and then the first semi-final and wishing they'd update us on Alex Bogdanovic's score and I said I'd emailed them?

Well, I guess they don't have email access at the events, but I got a nice reply from Ken today:

"Hi Steven,

Thanks for the e-mail. I'am sorry that we didn't give the Alex Bogdanovic /
Frederick Neimeyer score. It was being played about four courts down from our
broadcast area and we couldn't really see the action.

Still..you bring up a good point. We know we have a lot of listeners throughout
the U.K, and we should do a little better job of keeping you updated on your
players.

Thanks for the suggestion...and thank you for listening to
RadioTennis.com...we
truly appreciate it. Contact us anytime.

Regards,

Ken"

Fair enough then, and it seems that the stray ball that suddenly appeared on court during the SF can't have come from Alex's court after all!

Despite all that, and the sometimes not exceptiuonally high quality of the commentary, hats off to them for covering a Challenger at all, I think. If only that happened in the UK once in a while!

P.S. He even spelt Bogdanovic right ;-)

nice that he replied, and you are right thats its a great service, just a shame it doesnt have wider coverage.
looks like that stray ball must have been from somewhere else (or a very bad shot from boggo/fred) but it might have been from doubles or even just regular club users.
