Not expecting anything at all in this tournament and the way Gaston has been playing, there is a huge possibility that he will lose to the Bye in the 1st round.

Here is Gaston's section.

(7) GAUDIO, Gaston ARG v Bye
MIRNYI, Max BLR v SAULNIER, Cyril FRA
BJORKMAN, Jonas SWE v ROCHUS, Christophe BEL
Bye v (25) BAGHDATIS, Marcos CYP
(23) BERDYCH, Tomas CZE v Bye
(WC) YOUNG, Donald USA v HENMAN, Tim GBR
PASHANSKI, Boris SCG v SCHUETTLER, Rainer GER
Bye v (9) HEWITT, Lleyton AUS

Ouch.

All I can say is that those damn birds in his head are already chirping.

I'm privately arranging for Dr. Phil to fly into Miami for a meet and greet with Gaston. Poor soul, he's just not going to get any breaks. I hope he finds a way to fight his demons and play the tennis is is capable of (sorry to dangle there, but I ran out of words. Its a Chicago thing, you know.)

It's not an easy section of the draw, but at these events there shouldn't be easy sections of any draws.

Just see what unfolds.

I can't say I have particular expectations in this event. All I can say is that a possible Baghdatis/Gaudio match sounds interesting. For various reasons.

Good luck Gaston. Do your best.

Tough loss for the Bye, but such is life. Now, Gaston has to play Saulnier. That means a chance for me to see that match....good luck Gaston. :)

If this interrests someone, Gaston will play in double with another Gaston (Etlis)
They will play against Stepanek/Hrbaty on the first round.

It was a very tough fight this match with the Bye and after such a battle where the 3rd set took 2,5 hours alone. Gaston should have enough practice now, though it got very tough in that Gaston need 31 match points before he could win.

Hope he can carry this through in the next matches.

I´m so happy for Gastón!!!:banana::banana:
The match lasted 2:03, and he was losing 2-4 in the third set, so he showed quite a good attitude to win the next four games! :worship:
It wasn´t televised and the idiots on ESPN didn´t keep us updated so I came to my PC convinced that he´d lost! So many have: Moya, González, Massú, Chela, Ferrer...
Gastón and David are the only Latin Americans left, but Gastón has a tough nut to crack - Baghdatis - whereas David plays Benneteau which is an easier match. (Oh, and I forgot, Acasuso plays Roddick in less than an hour!)

Gaston plays Baghdatis now and he can't afford to play like he did against Saulnier and expect a good result.

He has defended his points and I just hope these morons actually put a potentially entertaining match like this on a proper court. I don't expect him to win, but I will just enjoy this match, irrespective of the result.

Good news to wake up to. Great job Gaston. Couldn't see that match as no live coverage yesterday. But we should get some replays this afternoon. I hope it's gonna be part of the matches they will decide to show. Good that I don't work this afternoon too!! :p
Next opponent, Baghdatis. Not easy at all. I have no particular expectations in this match, as usual when 2 of my faves play each other. All I can say is good luck to both. :)

Today he'll play in double:

Court 8 start 10:00 AM
(4)Hanley/Ullyett vs Fyrstenberg/Matkowski
Gullickson/Tu vs Benesova/Strycova
Daniilidou/Medina Garrigues vs Cohen-Aloro/Vento-Kabchi

I can't say. I'm home, watching the replay of the night. And they aren't showing Saulnier vs Gaston. Though he's a Frenchie. So, I figure that Baghdatis may not interest them more. I don't know.

And unfortunately, Chucho lost but that match may be a little controversial... didn't see it but I'm looking for some info. Too bad about those Spanish-speaking guys losing... hey, but Verdasco d Karlovic! The sad part is he faces Pandy today!

Thanks Deb for dropping by and giving the link to the pics.

Not too disappointed about this result, especially with Gaston's current mental state. Marcos is a very talented player and had a very calm demeanour out there and lifted his game in the last 2 sets at a level that Gaston wasn't able to compete against the better player today.

Good for Gaston to take a set, but got to love this comment " lo mio no es normal " . Which means something like "what happens to me is not normal".

Congrats to Marcos and well played.

The sweet souls on Sky TV only showed us the first set - before switching to the excitement of Hewitt/Berdych  However, I have to say that even though Gastón won that 1st set I always felt Marcos would take the match - as GWH says, he had a very calm demeanour out there even when he lost the 1st set tie breaker. He was the better player without a doubt and deserved to win.

So, what conclusions after yesterday’s match?
I think that when Gastón sees it in perspective he’ll feel he’s on the way up. After an unfortunate beginning of the season with his shoulder injury that left him out of the DC, he improved his game on clay in the Acapulco semis, and now he’s improved on hard against Baghdatis. The first set showed some pretty good tennis! :worship:

But he’s still lacking confidence, which became evident in his 8 DFs  (the Coria syndrome!) and we all know how he gets depressed when things don’t work out. It’s all a question of self-esteem and being too much of a perfectionist. When I see him staring into space with that pensive look I imagine him thinking “What the f*** am I doing here? Why should I continue to play if it makes me miserable?” But all in all he and his team should see this Baghdatis match as a step in the right direction, and as soon as he feels more satisfied with his game he will start to recover his confidence.

I think there are too many things going round in his head: Will he find his old form? Will he make a fool of himself? Will his shoulder resist? Will Mancini call him for DC? Will he let the flag down???
Unfortunately he’ll never be able to just relax and enjoy playing, so he depends on results to increase his confidence – it’s all a vicious circle!

Now he will go to Miami where all his family are waiting for him. I hope he and they will have a wonderful time together and that he will enter the Miami tournament in a happier frame of mind!

I'm sorry that David lost yesterday, and surprised at how the statistics duplicated those of Gastón's match almost exactly:
The score: 7-6 6-3 6-2
2:20 as opposed to 2:21 hs
8 DFs.
