second round - Gonzo vs Sam Querrey or Taylor Dent

and in a third round it could be against James Blake ... just like last year

Dent could be a little bit difficult but Gonzo can definitely beat and then in third round Blake :scared: *I still remember that bagel of last year in the same round of this tournament*
We know that Blake is playing well and he could be dangerous so I guess we have to wait and see in what conditions Gonzo is back

Well to be honest I hate the draw :( and this not only because of the possible third round as I'm not torn at all for this possible match - I want Fernando to win in straight sets as always.

It's more that Dent can be tricky for the first match back and then most possibly James who played incredible in Las Vegas and if he can keep it up he’s someone nobody wants to meet in the early rounds. He’s a totally different James to one Fernando beat there last year ......... I so hope Fernando can go far but think it will be very tough.

And did you notice that surprisingly last weeks rankings have been used. It’s unfortunate because otherwise Fernando and James could not have met so early in the tournament as they would have been the no. 12 and no. 13 seeds.

I didn't tought about that before ... that's true ...

But like I said before I guess that the only thing we can do is wait and see in what conditions Gonzo will be back

It is a difficult draw, we know ... but I think it could have been worse ...

Yes, the draw is difficult for Fernando. Anyway, it's always difficult in a Masters Series. Good luck to him :bounce:

NicoFan
03-07-2006, 11:56 PM
Dent is difficult - but doable. He's having a tough year. But then again, he's playing at "home" in California. Still I really think that Fernando can beat him. The tough round will be James - James looked good against Lleyton. But I think James is doable too.

Buena suerte Fernando!!! :bounce: You can do it! :boxing:

Hey !!!! There was and still is a mistake in the draw !!!!!
they changed something already that was bad in the draw (the player Gonzo has to face in 2nd round) but there's still something wrong (seeds place) !!!!

Look Gonzo's draw

(8) AGASSI, Andre USA v Bye
GOLDSTEIN, Paul USA v MARTIN, Alberto ESP
Qualifier v CLEMENT, Arnaud FRA
Bye v (26) HAAS, Tommy GER
(13) GONZALEZ, Fernando CHI v Bye
CARLSEN, Kenneth DEN v MULLER, Gilles LUX
(WC) QUERREY, Sam USA v DENT, Taylor USA
Bye v (12) BLAKE, James USA

he now plays against the winner of the match between Carlsen and Muller and not Dent vs Querrey

But there is more ...

PLEASE SEE THIS POST http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=3179132&postcount=21

The other change is that Gonzalez and Blake have swapped positions and Blake will now play Dent/Querrey in R2 while Gonzalez plays Carlsen/Muller. This means we now have the unusual situation of two top 16 seeds meeting in the last 32

that's true !!!! THIS IS SO WRONG !!!!!!

I can't believe a Master Series even does this kind of mistakes !!!!

I won't go on a rant here - but tennis isn't the best run sport in the world. :( And to get fans thinking one guy and then have another. Its not right. Just like those stupid scoreboards that had wrong scores and wrong winners. I just can't imagine that in any other sport.

It does seem wrong that he and James have to meet so soon.

I really do think that Fernando can beat him. James is playing well...but Lleyton wasn't playing his best in Vegas. He just has to fight.

We'll have to be positive. Muller is a big server - I've never really seen Carlsen - is he a big server?

And still worried about Fernando's shoulder and wrist.

I know Gonzo can beat them but I think it's still unfair if he makes it to the third round and has to face Blake if he SHOULD face another player

But there's nothing we can do ... (ATP, IW organizers :ras: :ras:  :ras: :ras: )

I'm so mad

I wonder if Gonzo already knows about this and if he can do something or Blake

There is only one thing we can do ... just stay possitive and wish good luck to Gonzo

Me neither, NicoFan ... I don't know much about Carlsen

And I'm also worried about his shoulder but he said he was fine but let's wait for his next match to see in what conditions he is now

Before I say this new draw is good or not,at least the new draw makes sense. :clap2:
Soderling and Andreev are tough, but it's better than facing James in R2! :D

I agree Radicalgirl-the most important thing is that the draw is done correctly-why was that so hard to do?????

I was so happy when the 3rd draw came out and Fena wouldn't have to play James till the quaters that I overlooked who he would have to play with the new one. Well, MSs are always tough I guess but if Fena stays healthy I think he will do well.

Thanks for posting the new draw
Well, it's still not good. Hope he won't face Soderling, I like the Swedes but it's maybe the Swede I like the least. Tursunov won't be an easy player, with a strong serve, and not interesting to watch, I watched him in Paris indoors last year, well, there are also Acasuso, with his great confidence, he can do something, and Roddick, but lately, he didn't play at his best. Then, Blake, Haas, Agassi... Well, not easy at all this draw. It's a real nightmare !!

Good luck to Fernando :bounce:

We'll be back on sunday evening :bigwave:

Yes,in this moment James seems to be unbeatable. Also he has home crowd.Last but not least I like James as well. :p
I want Melzer not Soderling to play against Feña.Soderling got very ok results recently. The most impressing match is he whipped Max in HC. :bigcry:
Time to change the negative record in first match,Feña! :rocker2:

Well, it will be Söderling :( He just won 6-4 6-4.

And I totally agree about James. When I saw him in the Las Vegas final I was like oh my please let Fernando not have to play him soon and that's why I was in shock when I saw the wrong draw with Fernando having to play him in his second match back.

Good luck Fernando

I was just going to good rep you - Roger played the crucial points better - showed the champion that he is. Some of his points were just perfect. But proud of Nico - he fought hard - I thought Roger was going to blow him off the court, but Nico stayed with him. :yeah:

Now we have to worry about Fernando. I can't wait to see him in Miami so I can see him for myself. It kills me when something is wrong and I can't see him to know exactly what it is.

And if he and Nico don't end up playing doubles, that will say a lot too - like his shoulder or wrist. So I really hope they play doubles becuase that probably means its nothing physical.

Good Luck in the doubles chicos !!!

I knew that you were upset, and felt so bad for you.

I know how you feel - unless you see him yourself, you never know who to trust - sometimes he doesn't talk, and sometimes the press is wrong.

I will see him in Miami, and I'm going to spend a lot of time watching him at practice and matches. I'll try to see what I can pick up from listening to him and Horacio - of course I need to find a person who can speak Spanish since mine sucks but after 4 years of watching him and Nico I'm good at finding people from Chile who can translate for me.

Since he's playing doubles, I think physically he's okay. And I understand why he's not talking - he's upset. So it may be a couple days before he talks. If at all until Miami. If he drops out of doubles, I think that we'll have something to really worry about.

I don't like to see Feña losing like he did ... but as everyone here, I also home it's not something physical with his shoulder or wrist ... I'm so worried now ... and I checked the Cooperativa website, his website, La Tercera, etc but nothing! Feña hasn't talk about the match ...
And the thing that I most hate is when Feña plays this kind of matches and I don't have tv coverage  it would have been so different if someone here could have seen the match and tell us how Feña looked but stupid ESPN!!! stupid CANAL13 !!!!! NADA !!!!!   now we are like in air knowing nothing! we don't know anything! we don't know how he feels! why did he lost like that! nothing!!!

I so hope this happened because of the time off and he'll be better in Miami

Fernando a lot of    for you ...

Good Luck in the doubles chicos !!!

  For you Gonzofan. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. I guess it will be a good sign if they do play doubles.

Thanks NicoFan :)

As you said, one doesn't know who to trust and the press ... well ... the press ... what can I say ... :ras: they are horrible when one of the boys lose ...
There is a women that always brings me the newspapers to my house and I only checked them to see if Feña said something but I didn't read anything more because I can imagine what they wrote :boxing:

It would be great if we can know what him and Horacio talk during practices in Miami and I hope you'll find someone who can translate for you ;)

I also think that if they are playing doubles that's a "good sign" because maybe it means that he doesn't have anything physical but I guess we only have to wait until he talks and that could happen in some more days ...

Thanks Sparko :) I hope so too ... I'm so worried ... I just hope he'll talk soon but I doubt it

Hello everyone,

I was surprised to hear that morning that Fernando lost against Soderling. I wasn't a big fan of Söderling, but now, it's getting worse. I hope Fernando will talk about his match. The most important is that he's not injured and the fact that he'll play in the doubles is a good news. Maybe, Söderling was too good and Fernando didn't play well. Well, hope to read some good news soon !! Good luck in Miami :bounce:

La Tercera and Las Ultimas Noticias are already out and no words from Feña  ...
Only interviews with Gildemeister saying that he is worried but also trusts in Fernando and he is sure he'll do it better in Miami and he'll improve for Davis Cup

I was thinking today and I think this is something more mental, you know, because I remember that when I was watching Fernando's match for DC against Mertinak, Horacio was the comentator and he said that after the loss to Bogomolov he was so sad and his mood was like in the floor and Horacio said that he was like getting back to his level again and then lost that match against Massu so he went like down again and now Horacio was working and trying to make him feel better (Horacio said all this during that DC match) so if we think about it maybe is lack of confidence and also the time off maybe affected him a bit ... being without competition for a month ... but I say maybe it is confidence because the four loses Feña has had this year have been so sad and weird also ... first Ancic 6-3 6-0 (Gonzo was totally out of the match) Bogomolov (better not remember that one  ), Massu (a match that was almost in his hand ... he had 2 bps to serve for it and had a ball just there in the net and missed it) and now Soderling ...

I don't know what you all think about it but this is just my humble opinion and of course I might be wrong

I so hope it's not what I wrote and he is feeling well and in a good mood and that loss on Saturday was just a bad day ...

No, I agree with you. I'm beginning to think its mental too...and with mental fatigue also and confidence problems. With a the physical problems thrown in on top of it.

And to be honest, I think it goes back to Shanghai. One, he's prepared for vacation, and ends up in Shanghai with all that travelling, and loses a heartbreaker to Gaston.

Then hardly any vacation, and he has to get back into it - and is having physical problems. That match against Alex was both mentally and physically draining.

Back to Chile with all the pressure of Vina and disappointment of losing to Nico when it seemed like he was cruising after the first set.

Then DC - lots of stress there.

He takes a vacation - a much needed vacation that he has to take because of his phsyical problems but its at the worst time - all the other guys are cranking it into gear, and getting match fit. He shows up to IW without the match time. And probably still concerned over the physical problems, and still mentally in the dumps for the loses at the Oz Open and Vina. So he not only doesn't have the match time but also not the confidence that match wins can give him.

Shanghai messed up everything (in my humble opinion  ) It screwed up his entire schedule. Not his fault - obviously he had to go to Shanghai.

Miami may be a bust, but he can get it together in the European clay court season. While he may love hardcourts, he's awesome on clay - and can really do some damage - get the wins and get the confidence back.

I wish he didn't have DC right now - hardcourts, then having to train on grass when he needs to train on clay.

NicoFan, I totally agree that Shanghai threw off Fena's 2006 plans completely! I blame AA for playing the TMC then losing giving Fena hardly any notice at all to change everything and rush all the way to China and be ready to compete vs. the top players. I'm proud of what he accomplished there but ever since, Fena's had trouble in his matches.

I am a little concerned about his health, both physically and mentally. No doubt he's feeling exhausted and this will affect the DC QF vs. USA [AA desperately wants to be part of the team now... ].

I hope Fena can make the right decisions for him in the coming months. I hate to see one of my guys not do well... it saddens me. :sobbing:

Well, I hate to blame Andre. So many of the guys dropped out. I blame more of the long schedule that causes these injuries.

But yes, I'm proud he went too, but I really do believe that's why all this is happening. I'm concerned too. I saw him on a segment called "Bag Check" on TTC - he looked so cute - I just wanted to hug him.

Hope he does make the right decisions - one decision that I think that he has to make is to play every tournament during the European clay season. Normallly he takes a couple weeks off - he can't afford to do that this time - if he tired, at least go, play a couple rounds, stay in match shape, and get a few points.

Andre does want to play DC - I really wouldn't want to be Pat Mac. Andre is Andre, and he's the only one of the guys that has actually won Wimbledon, and historically does well on grass. James is playing better than Andre now, but James isn't great on grass. Taylor has the game for grass, but has been playing like sh*t. So who should Pat Mac pick? I think he'll go for Andre just because again Andre is Andre, and why would you pass up a guy who has won I think 9 slams. To be honest, I have no idea who he should pick.

Honestly...I have a bit same feeling as you,it's not fair to Feña to "suffer" one loss and Andre retired to play too late...you know,if I remember correctly,he cried when Gaston beat him.
He is a good player,or no matter how fucking bad in some day he is it's damn impossible to get bagelled! That's why I was too shocked and angry!!! :fiery::fiery::fiery: Oh recently Soderling is my super nightmare,he did it to Max before as well! :armed: They lost the doubles, but the good news is he has more time to prepare in Miami,so I look forward his nice results! :D

In DC,it's early to say which team will win,but Massu has better mentality than Feña recently...but don't push yourself too much pressure, ranking is not that important, people notice great quality matches more,so just play! :)

During the match with Soderling Feña had a pain in his right foot

I think the same thing that all of you, Shangai definitely messed with Feña's schedule ... but I don't think it was the wrong decision to go, you know, I mean, for Feña going to Shangai, winning a match and living that experience of being one of the top 8 I think it was just priceless for him.

So sad that his great 2005 is affecting him (physically and mentally) this year.

I really don't think he'll play every tournament in the European clay season.
I remember that when he was playing DC and was commentator in MEGA he said that instead of playing Las Vegas and Memphis we was going to play a tournament between Montecarlo and Rome (Barcelona/Casablanca or Estoril/Munich) But I'm pretty sure he won't play seven weeks in a row and then Roland Garros

About DC, this will be one hard decision for Pat Mac. Obviously James is playing much better than Andre but I think Pat will chose Andre because he is ANDRE AGASSI but if Pat chooses Andre I'll feel sad for James because I think he deserves to be the second player of the team.

Now that we are talking about Andre and I know I'm totally Off Topic-yesterday I watched his match against Tommy and Tommy is playing so well!!! I'm so glad he is getting back to his level again because he is a really good player :D but I miss the long hair, though ...

Fernando talked with the press !!!! with Cooperativa !!!

He said that his loss is not somthing too dramatic and there is nothing much to evaluate, just that it wasn't a good week and he is conscious that a lot of things can happen during the year. He also said that he is not playing like he wanted to but it's not something that he is worried about because he knows that playing and practicing he'll recover everything.
He says that he hasn't been well on court but again it's not something that he is worried about because it's completely normal above all after having physhical problems but the important thing is to continue doing things well and he'll be playing better in one, two or three weeks.
Also said that his mind is already in Miami and he is training and it's a tournament where he always plays well so he is very motivated for next week.

First of all, I'm so happy that I heard him saying all those things and it wasn't in a newspaper saying "Fernando Gonzalez said this, this and that and bla bla bla ..."

When I started listening the interview it wasn't from the beginning but maybe Cooperativa will repeat it in the afternoon and if he says something more I'll post it here.

I like to know that he is already thinking in Miami and is motivated for next week :) and he knows that playing and practicing he'll recover and will start playing good again.

I sounded really calm and relax so I hope that's a good sign and he really is thinking in Miami and is motivated ...

EDIT - I wrote I and I meant he

That's great news GonzoFan! :yeah:

I'm sure that he's a bit worried and its in the back of his mind, but at least he sounds calm and relaxed.

I was wondering if he would go straight to Miami - I know the ATP wants the guys to stay at the current tournament until Friday - but he has his own house in Miami, and I doubt the people at the Miami tournament will mind if he practices there. I'm sure its all set and ready to go.

I can't wait to see him next week! :woohoo:

Thanks for all the info Gonzofan. Its good to hear it wasn't really a physical problem in the Soderling match. Fernando is never one for excuses and I admire that. He's just in a bit of slump but that will change with more match time. And Radicalgirl is so very right-he shouldn't be pressuring himself over his ranking. That only leads to too much stress and poor results. Just concentrate on playing your best game Fena (which is damm good)! Horacio-take care of our Fernando!
