Roddick has to do well here because he actually has some points to defend. Does anyone know how well Nalbandian did at this tournament last year? I would think that Roddick at least needs to get to the semis.

will Andy be seeded 3rd? That means if he could reach the SF, he'd probably play Rafa. Hope he reaches that far and makes the final. also wish an Andy-Nalby final.

I agree, but still his performance over Ferrero and Hewitt would be a big improvement over what he has done this year so far. :) Still, sometimes mental issues are changed quite abruptly and you see huge changes in attitude and performance. Double-crosses fingers :wavey:

I agree Merton, I think Andy's form at Cincy last year was the last time I saw Andy playing anywhere near like the old Andy--smart and fast and powerful. He still wasn't terribly confident but he pulled through some tough matches. And of course, beating Hewitt was icing on the cake. His reaction afterwards was precious.

Hopefully this week off will have given Andy some time to regroup and think about what he wants to accomplish at IW. I don't want him playing in fear anymore. It's not right.

IMO he was playing better at Lyon and Paris in the fall, before he got hurt. At the beginning of this season he even mentioned that he felt like after the USO last year he picked it up and was being more aggressive and he was. He didn't even drop serve at Lyon, didn't do anything unnecessary to extend matches like he's been doing, etc. Hopefully this week off will have given Andy some time to regroup and think about what he wants to accomplish at IW. Too bad I wasn't able to watch any of the Lyon matches. :(Well I only saw the last set against Monfils that someone posted to download, but he was impressive in that. Plus he straight-setted Santoro and didn't lose serve to him so that's impressive. Plus, that match against Hrbaty in Paris right before he got hurt, I mean that was one of the best matches I've EVER seen him play. And then when he was hurt against Ferrer the way he fought was impressive, etc.

We know he has it in him, he just has to find it :awww:

Fumus
03-06-2006, 03:11 PM
Not so dire, Andy will still be number 4 in the world with points at Miami he could pickup. He could lose alot of points this week if he doesn't make the semis but, lets also remember he went out so early at Miami last year he could pick those points back up or even be better off depending on how far he makes it at IW. I honestly don't see Andy making it past 2nd or 3rd round the way he's playing. Andy needs to re-group big time and suprise everyone because he isn't beating the people he supposed to anymore, so how can he win the toss-ups or beat the players above him?

Deboogle!.
03-06-2006, 03:14 PM
Andy could very easily go lower than 4th though. That's just what would happen if NO ONE played this week. Davydenko and Ljubicic aren't that far behind him, he could easily be out of the top 5 after IW.

It's true but who cares, I would rather see his ranking drop for awhile until he finds his confidence. If he just floats around gets wins and goes deep in tournys because his ranking is high and he doesn't face anyone good until late, that's just as bad. He needs to start winning the big events and playing like a top guy who can beat chumps and beat the top guys every now and then. If he doesn't start playing like a top guy, I don't wanna see him.

Caren
03-06-2006, 03:28 PM
Its as simple as this, if Andy doesn't play well this week he's done for. These next few weeks are prolly the last chance that Andy will have to gather some points, he sucks on clay and the clay season is just round the corner. Plus i don't think i can deal with anymore disappointment :(

Golfnduck
03-06-2006, 04:20 PM
I'll be happy with Andy making the quarters, that would defend most of his points. Ideally, I would love to see Andy win, but that all depends on what is going on with Andy's head.

Deboogle!.
03-06-2006, 04:22 PM
well to me, it's getting dire, considering he might fall out of the top 5 soon for the first time in almost 3 years and we haven't even gotten to the time of year when he has the most points to defend.

If he's smart he's already in CA, getting used to everything and making sure he's as well-prepared and stuff as he possibly can... I think the weather looks like it's gonna be cold in the whole area for the tourney, at least the beginning. Andy would probably prefer it be a lot hotter but since I'm going this weekend, I'm glad it won't be 95 but more like 70

Yes Jez, he could be, and Andy could get him in his first match too. ANYONE could be a problem for him, but considering he has a chance of actually meeting a GOOD player really early.............................. byebye 225 points

You can admit it. A lot of problems created a loser.

It's not just 100% mental. There's no mentor, no coaching, no real competitive spirit + little flexibility...

An unmotivated loser back in 2002 too, when most people here knew nothing about him.
Just look at what Andy'll look like in a few years...

I wouldn't predict Slam wins for Mr. Roddick, no matter what delusional crap DADDY Pat McEnroe spits out. Highly paid DC captain.

Instant replay can't be used soon enough. The player challenge part will be fun but this will also help cut down on Andy wasting his time and energy griping at the chair ump instead of concentrating on the match. Once he sees it on replay, that's it. And also because Andy is more often than not right about calls, he can feel vindicated and make faces at the ump. ;)

You're assuming that Andy's a real tennis player (a dignified one at that)

Andy's eating his words. He pitied Blake and thought his low power/low energy level were enough to beat Karlovic and Acasuso.
He never overpowered anyone, not even Henman or Rochus. Too bad he was told to do nothing but hit hard.
He even blew a sigh of relief when he gave the RCA title to Ginepri.
Lazy serving, poor fitness and bad line calls gave him chances to insult himself and to lose in dramatic fashion (french open, madrid, indiana).

James crossed a huge mental hurdle beating Lleyton, I think. He's clearly not the same player he was a year ago. Only time will tell if he can keep it up and he has a tough draw, but based on the way he played last week, he could beat almost anyone on a given day.

I think a match between he and Tommy (assuming Tommy's shoulder wasn't too serious and he's ok), playing the way they have been, would be freaking awesome and I'd pop a big bowl of popcorn while watching it ;)

so the tourney made a huge mistake and used last week's rankings - since then, the draw has changed a couple times. it could affect Andy and it makes his draw a bit tougher. Robredo, Blake, and Gonzo all changed places, so Andy is now seeded to face Gonzo in the 4th round, not Robredo.

I'm assuming this is the storm coming from up north. It's been pretty dark and miserable all week weather wise up here. I can already imagine the chaos in the OOP thread if there are going to be long delays

The only rain on the west coast I see on the big map at weather.com is where I'm at now, so it's probably going to be the same one. Hope it doesn't rain too much. Maybe it'll just be a light drizzle and the players will play through it :)

tangerine_dream
03-09-2006, 04:35 PM
Congrats, Andy, on making it through to the second round.

edit

tennis-x seems to think that Andy's got it made through to the quarters :o
Third Quarter
Seeds: (3) Andy Roddick, ( Andre Agassi, (12) James Blake, (13) Fernando Gonzalez, (17) Tommy Robredo, (24) Igor Andreev, (26) Tommy Haas, (32) Fernando Verdasco
Floaters: Taylor Dent, Arnaud Clement, Robin Soderling, Ivo Karlovic
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The wacky "American Section" features a plethora of U.S. Davis Cup participants past and present in Roddick, Agassi, Blake and Dent, and the draws are tough. Roddick is looking at a second match with (32) Verdasco who has beaten him in their last two meetings, while Agassi is looking at a second match against (26) Haas who always gives him a close run, with the former No. 2-ranked German winning three of their nine career meetings. Blake will likely face Dent in the second round with the winner to face (17) Robredo. Other potential testers for the seeds in their opening round are (26) Haas vs. Clement, (13) Gonzalez vs. Soderling, and (32) Verdasco vs. the serving machine "Dr." Ivo Karlovic. American audiences will get a treat if Agassi, Blake or Dent get through to the quarterfinal to face Roddick, but watch out for Haas who is the hot player in the California kitchen.

edit again

Taylor just withdrew

From the LA Times today:
The men's draw suffered one loss when Taylor Dent withdrew because of an ailing back. Dent, scheduled to play wild card Sam Querrey in the first round, will be replaced by Bobby Reynolds.

Andy gets a buzz cut, it usually means that he's decided he's not going to be able to go home for a while. Let's hope this means he plans to play a lot tennis and win a lot matches in the next few weeks.

To quote MC Hammer... " and we pray (we got to pray just to make it today)..."

I thought it means BIG changes. Didn't he get one done when he split up with Mandy Moore and then just around when he split up with Brad?

Fee
03-09-2006, 08:26 PM
Andy and Mandy broke up right after he won San Jose the first time (it wasn't announced until a month later at Indian Wells). I don't remember where the haircut came in that time. Actually, now that I try to place them all, I don't really remember where the buzz cuts came, except for the Davis Cup one that the twins dared him to get.

Deboogle!.
03-09-2006, 08:31 PM
I remember he was buzzed when he won San Jose 2 years ago so it was before he and Mandy broke up, and he'd done it for the 2004 TMC too.... I don't know that he did it at all last year, I don't remember.

I tend to doubt it symbolizes anything, but that's just me :p

partygirl
03-09-2006, 08:31 PM
