Dessert in the Desert - Tommy plays Indian Wells

Since Tommy is yummy...

Anyway, the main draw for Indian Wells will be made on Tuesday, March 7th at 1 pm California time and it should be on the internet within a few hours after that. I really, really, really want him to do well here, much better than last year when he lost his first match. I'm bummed I'm not going this year, but its kind of expensive to go down there every year, hard to find a cheap hotel room.

Go Tommy!

Thanks Fee for starting this thread!! Let's hope he won't be on Federer's side of the draw!!
I want to wish Tommy a lot of good luck!!! He'll do better than last year!! I'm sure!
Too bad it's really expensive for you to go there, i'm still waiting for my first time tourny ever!! :D
Come oooon! Tommy!! You're Yummy!!

Fee you are so great with Tournament Threads Titles :worship: I try, but they never turn out well  I'm still worried about what Tommy's shoulder will be like playing in a Tournament again?

But that's because I can't and won't believe he's really injured again.. Just want him to be completely healthy..!!:o

When Tommy is good again, I think that his goal should be a quarterfinal (reasonable goal I would say)

and then he can build up on this performance and lead to Miami

also need a bit luck with draw, not every player he likes to play and has to avoid the strongest guns early :yeah:

Yes since Tommy went out in the 1st Round last year anything above that would be good. And the draw is so important in tennis. I do hope he gets an easy draw. I would like to see him win the Title, of course. But as I said anything above the 1st Round would be good for Tommy :)

It was actually the second round Mae. He had a first round bye last year because he was seeded.

Oh well now he just has to get past the 2nd Round to do better than he did last year :) Will he be seeded this year?
Or since his ranking dropped last year will that keep him from being seeded? (You know I don't understand these things  )

Neely
03-04-2006, 09:11 PM
Yeah, he will be seeded again as seeding goes by the current rankings. And Indian Wells is one of these very generous Masters Tournaments which has a Grand Slam like draw with 32 seeds, just with the difference that the seeds will play a player called "bye" in the first round  So Tommy will def. bye in the first round ;)

LOL Neely I guess that's where the joke comes from when a player is playing very poorly that "bye" could beat them in the 1st Round. Well it is going to be interesting to see what kind of a draw Tommy is going to get.

It's too bad we can't vBet on the match Haas v. Bye :lol:
The draw will be out on Thursday?
I liked the outcome of Dubai! Federer lost his first 'official' match since november (or something like that), plus Haas defeated him in Kooyong.. so the draw doesn't really matter i think!! :o

Tommy will play well :woohoo: :yeah:

I still like to see the draw because I think it is important, however, having said that if a player is good enough they will win no matter who is in their draw :) It was nice to see another "official" loss by Federer. I think the Masters Cup loss by Federer could be put down to the injury to his ankle last year, but I think this year Rafa just beat him ;)
And on a Hard Court even not clay

I think in a masters there a not many possibilities to get an easy draw, so I'm fine with that. He has to beat them to win a masters and proof his strengh. He has his chances I guess. GO Tommy :)

Well Andre has not been playing well lately. I think his health is about to the point he will soon have to retire. James has been a hot player lately, but he has also had 1st Round loses in some Tournaments this year. And of course Tommy was a hot player until that shoulder gave him trouble. So now with Tommy it will be is the shoulder alright and can he get back playing at the same level he was before the shoulder forced him out of LV?

Tommy's match will not be until late in the Eastern part of the U.S. ESPN2's coverage doesn't start until 9 o'clock tonight Eastern Time. James Blake's Match will be first then Tommy and Andre will play!

16681
03-14-2006, 02:29 AM
It may be a long night! It is 9:25 p.m. Eastern time and ESPN2 is going from court to court to show Roddick's Match and Safin's Match. They are both still in the 1st Set, but the Safin Match I think will be a tiebreak for set 1st. Then comes the James Blake Match and then finally we get to see Tommy and Andre. Nothing like a build up to the night's main Match!

Yay, Tommy is on my TV, :yippee: (now win dammit!)
He was on my TV also and he did Win :worship: Tommy defeated Andre 7-5 and 6-2 ;) Tonight it was Tommy that got just alittle emotional. He threw his racket one time and played a couple of bad points after that, but then he regrouped and won the 1st Set. It was looking like Andre was going to win the 1st Set when Tommy threw his racket down. Tommy started out in his red shirt with the white in it and white pants. Later in the Match he changed to his lime green shirt, but it was during a commercial break so I guess the people at the Tournament got a show.
But we who were watching on TV didn't---darn  Tommy is so good looking. Pictures don't do him justice and I doubt if even the TV does him justice! If I saw him in person I bet I would just melt and fly away  The Blake Match is still going on. The TV people keep saying the Blake Match would start first, but it didn't. Blake won the 1st Set and the 2nd set was very close I don't know if it went to a tiebreak or not because I came on here to report on Tommy's Match. I don't know the stats on 1st Serves, but just from watching I would like to see Tommy do a better job on his serve. But he won and that's what matters ;) It is like 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time so I need to get to bed and dream of Tommy ;)

An interview with:

TOMMY HAAS

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Tommy.

Q. How did that rank?
TOMMY HAAS: It's definitely up there. Any time you play Andre, for me it's a special feeling, you know, because if you look back, not long after I got to the academy when I was close to being 14 years old, I got to hit some balls with him. I looked up to him. It's always great playing him.
Beating him here on a high-level match in my eyes, it's good.

Q. Do you think Andre was on his game or do you think your game was really on?
TOMMY HAAS: Well, I've been thinking that I'm playing very solid tennis right now. Anybody that's going to come out to play me is going to have to play on a really high level to beat me, in my eyes. I thought he did that in the first set. We were hitting hard balls, cross-court, down the line, moving each other around, finishing it off with a couple dropshots here and there. I think he served better than me in the first set.
I should have been the one maybe going up a break before he did. But he got the better of me doing that. You know, serving at 5-3, 40-15. Probably should have won the first set. But didn't let go. You know, he came up with some loose shots, I came up with some good ones, I won the first set 7-5. That gave me some good confidence.

Q. You were looking very solid, and in your practice matches.
TOMMY HAAS: Practice matches, no, they don't really count. I don't rate them anywhere. But in the matches I've been playing, I've been feeling pretty good, yeah.

Q. In hindsight, what do you think of the match with Federer at the Australian Open?
TOMMY HAAS: I don't know. I'm not a person really that looks back. That was in January. We played a great match. Till 2-All in the fifth, I think it was pretty even. Obviously I thought I should have gotten the better of him in the first set. And I didn't use my chances. Then he jumped on top of me. And I was still thinking about that in the second. And once you run behind Roger, it's very tough to catch up. He just sometimes cruises on another level.
Then I got my first opportunity and I took it to go up a break in the third. Started playing some really solid tennis from there on. At 3-2 in the fifth, he broke me. I think he had 12 winners and three unforced errors in the fifth set. You're not going to look good against him when he plays like that.

Q. Have you ever felt better than you've felt so far this year?
TOMMY HAAS: That's tough to say. When I was playing some of my best tennis constantly, I got up to No. 2 in the world. But that's five years ago almost. It's tough. I think everybody improves almost every year. I feel like I'm improving. I feel still like I need to improve some other things in my game. That's what I'm trying to work on.
I'd be lying if I'd tell you I'm not feeling great right now. Winning two titles the last tournaments I've played, playing good tennis here, obviously I'm feeling kind of good.

Q. How much do you credit your new coach for your play right now, for your improved play?
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, he's obviously given me something else than my other team in the past, with Nick and Red. Nick and Red are still two guys I talk to, that help me out when I'm at the academy. Thomas is a guy that we actually haven't gotten a chance to work that much yet, which is quite funny actually. We worked one week to 10 days right before Christmas really good. We're still trying to see what to improve and working on that. But we've been playing a lot of tournaments since.
But it's going well. He's helping me with things that I think I needed to hear. We'll see how it continues.

Q. When you look at the next three Grand Slams, which would be the best one most suited to your game? Probably not the French.
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, it's tough. I think it depends. At the French sometimes I feel pretty good depending on how the weather is there. It can play quite fast.
Wimbledon, I've had a lot of bad luck there the last many years that I've played. I never actually reached the fourth round. That's actually one of my goals, reach the fourth round once and maybe see what happens when I get there.
US Open, I've had some good matches, played some solid tennis there over the years.
I mean, I don't know, US Open is probably one of my favorite ones there. But I'd like to see if I'm in good shape.
The way I'm feeling right now, I think every one of those, it's going to be pretty tough to beat me. That's a good thing. If I can just stay healthy, it would be nice.

Q. What do you think was the key to today's victory?
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, really I think it was a battle of good tennis the first set. I probably should have gotten an early break, but I didn't get it. He got it first. He probably should have won the first set serving at 5-3, 40-15. Somehow I hung in there. He made a few loose errors. I came back winning that first set 7-5.
I think that gave me some more momentum than him. I got an early break in the second. He broke me right back. I was kind of tight again. And then I came up with some great shots there to go ahead. That was probably the key at the end.

Q. After being injured last couple years and having some bad luck, do you feel this is the right time to step up? What is your goal for the season?
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, I mean, I'd like to just continue the way it's been going. I'm feeling quite fit, good about my game, the way I'm doing things.
If I can just stay healthy, like I said before, I think I'm going to be a tough guy to beat out there. That alone gives me a lot of confidence going out in the matches. If I can continue just being healthy and playing good tennis, I think the rest will show.
Obviously I'd like for some good things to happen this year. I already won two titles, which is for me great. That's having the chance to lift up a trophy again, it's always a great feeling. Whatever happens, happens. But I'd really like to just stay healthy. That's really the most important thing for me.

Thanks for the interview Alexiana :) I couldn't help but notice how much importance Tommy placed on staying healthy. Of course, that is true for any player, but with Tommy's past history it is especially important. He has already done better at IW than he did last year so that is great :) I must admit I, like you, am not so sure about the Blake match-up either. I would have rather he played someone else. Because Blake has also won two Tournaments this year, of course, he also went out in the first round of some Tournaments also. But right now Blake seems to be doing very well  I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens!

LOL sorry for the "story", but I typed that post right after Tommy won! And I guess you could tell I was a little excited. It is great watching Tommy play, but at the same time I get very nervous also. And I'm really concerned about the upcoming Match with Blake and that was before I even knew that Blake has won two matches against Tommy   I'm trying to hope for the best :)

Yes Tommy has won me some vCash this year that's for sure :) And I'm afraid it is going to be a tough Match, but Tommy sounded confident in the interview you posted. I looked up the H2H on James and Tommy. James has won both of their Matches. And they were both on Hard Courts. The first Match was in the Q's at Memphis in 2002. The score was 3-6 and 1-6. The 2nd time was in 2005 in New Haven in the Round of 16 and the score was 6-1, 3-6, and 3-6.
Maybe the third time will be the charm for Tommy ;)

Well I'm so nervous I haven't even been able to bet on Tommy yet. Baghdatis has already won his Match today
6-4 and 6-1 over Berdych. The real surprise to me of this Tournament has been Federer  I mean yes he is winning, but more and more players are actually winning sets off of him. And they are players that you wouldn't think would be able to take sets from Federer. I wonder what is going on with Federer--he actually seems to be human is this Tournament instead of "Superman"?

03-16-2006, 05:38 AM
Bad news real bad news  Blake won the 1st Set 6-3, however, we now find out that Tommy came down with food poisoning yesterday according to P. Mac. He thought he would be O.K. today, but he called for the Trainer after the 1st Set. So Tommy may retire due to illness. Blake, however, is looking awesome. So with Tommy being sick and James playing so well even if the Match continues I see no way for Tommy to win

16681
03-16-2006, 05:44 AM
Tommy did retire  And since the 1st Set was completed it counts as a Match for betting purposes. So the people that bet on James wins and the people that bet on Tommy loses  I wish if Tommy was sick he would have retired before the 1st Set was completed and that way it wouldn't have counted as a Match. So anyone that bet on Tommy than could have gotten their stake back, but he didn't retire soon enough

what's wrong with you guys!!!!!? Can't you even win a stupid match!?

16681
03-16-2006, 07:56 AM
Well to be fair to both guys one is trying to come back from a knee problem and the other was sick. But I must say Tommy has the worse luck when it comes to timing of illness or injury not that there is ever a good time to be ill or injuried, but he comes up with the very worse time
And I don't like the vBetting Rule myself, but it does follow the game of tennis. James won the 1st Set so he is credited with the win. I knew I had a bad feeling about this Match between James and Tommy. I got my first real clue when in the scoring thread posters that follow "real" betting were saying basically the betting line had changed. They thought maybe Tommy was injuried, but it had obviously gotten out that he was ill  Get well quick Tommy ;)

I agree completely with what you are saying. I have never known a player to have such bad luck as Tommy
He is playing well and his shoulder starts to hurt and he has to miss a Tournament. The shoulder feels find for the next Tournament and again Tommy is playing well so what happens--he gets food poisoning of all things  And now we are left with the "what if"? If Tommy hadn't been ill would he have won the Match? But now we will never know the answer to that question

I am sure there is noone out there who has as many bad luck as him. Shoulder injury when he was No. 2 in the world, injury when Germany was about to win the Hopman Cup, Injury in Wimbledon when he finally got a good draw, injury in Indian Wells, when he was really playing good.... An interview with:

TOMMY HAAS
(ATP Interview)

Q. Must be disappointing to have to pull out through illness. Can you explain what happened today?
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, I basically mentioned that I'm feeling sick since the match after Andre. Unfortunately, just went to the wrong restaurant I guess at night. Yeah, was up the whole night vomiting. Throughout the day yesterday didn't even leave the room once. Just thought maybe give it a try going out there today.
But, yeah, still a little bit too weak and no strength to compete out there against the best. Unfortunately, I have to withdraw. Yeah, now I just got to make sure I get rid of the bacteria or virus in my system that I have.

Q. You said you picked up last night after your match. Did it improve this morning to the extent you thought you could play don't?
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, it improved much. If I would have had to have played yesterday, there is no way in hell I could have made it on the court. Throughout the day I started to feel a little better. I'm taking medicine for it. It's kicking in, but not strong enough for me to be competing at a high level.
Just the body is weak. You can't focus the way you want to. You know, it's not going to be good enough.

Q. Did it get worse as the match progressed?
TOMMY HAAS: It pretty much stayed the same the whole time. I just was hoping maybe once we got out on the court with all the adrenaline, wanting to win, you might forget about it and feel better. In this case, it wasn't, so unfortunately, yeah, that's the case.

Q. Last week in Vegas you had to withdraw because of your shoulder injury. This week you had to withdraw due to illness. Does it become frustrating since you're in such good form in 2006?
TOMMY HAAS: Yeah, it's frustrating that I got this virus or bacteria in my system. Obviously, I'm playing great tennis. I liked my chances tonight as well. You know, win or lose, I just like to go out there and compete hard and try my best. That's what I've been doing this year so far and it's been working great for me.
It's unfortunate this had to happen, especially in an important big tournament like this. But health is the most important thing in life. What can you do? Sometimes it's out of your hands to feel this way. You just got to look forward now and try to get fit again for the next weeks.

Q. Considering you are having such a good season, what does this do to you mentally not being able to play consistently week in and week out?
TOMMY HAAS: Well, I don't think Las Vegas to me was such a setback to be honest. I played a great week in Memphis. It was probably wise for me not to play, even though I was feeling a little bit injured. Even here, like I said, I'm playing some great tennis. The sickness, you know, obviously hopefully won't take me out too long so I don't lose any of my physical fitness. I can just be ready again for the Nasdaq, which is the next big tournament that's important.
So it's not really a big effect yet. This is not going to take me out for weeks or months. I'm not really too worried about that.

Well I must admit that Tommy has won well with me as a Fan but then there has been the shoulder and sickness so maybe I effect Tommy that way :p To other players I'm the "kiss of death" on the tennis courts :ras:
