Actually, the win was expected Tommy Roberdo actually is a pretty consistent top 20 player... that had two bad weeks..generally speaking though Tommy is very good with his results...but his problem tends to be he has a very bad record against the very top players and that's why he hasn't reached the top 10 yet...

These conditions translate well for Tommy.

I think he can go pretty far here pending the Karlovic match.

Poor play from Andy combined with Tommy playing well equals this result.

Unexpected result.Even though Murray lost, the score should have been better.
Tommy will face Fish, let's see if he can change his h2h record.

Solid win. One tournament and a couple of wins over struggling players does not a top twenty player make. All of a sudden Henman Hill has a certain ring to it again.

I knew this would happen. Some peeps were claiming Murray was the favourite just because of a couple of 1st round losses from Robredo. Look at the difference in ranking. Sooner or later he had to start winning again and he won pretty comfortably against Murray. He is THAT good. Better lucky next time Andy

Retire Murray. This is the most disgraceful defeat in the annals of British athletic history. How could you lose to an descendant of the Spanish Armada? You disgraced the nation, you are young so it is not too late to pursue other interests before you further ambarass yourself and your nation.

Merton halucinates about the headlines of an imaginary British tabloid tomorrow.

I watched the first 5 games of this match then decided to sleep as Andy never looked like winning it. He didn't even look as if he was trying at times!

Andy Murray began his reign as British number one in miserable fashion as he was thrashed 6-2 6-2 by Tommy Robredo in the first round of the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas.

This from the Telegraph today:

"Andy Murray has been wise beyond his years in not allowing himself to be caught up in the nonsensical hype over his supplanting of Tim Henman as the British No 1.

As Murray admitted: "It's not that big a deal, to be honest. Obviously, you'd rather be No 1 than the British No 20. It's nice to be No 1 in your own country but it doesn't mean anything to the other players, whereas if you're in the top 10 in the world, then that's pretty special."

That Murray has breached the top 50 at the age of 18 - beginning the week at No 42 - is pretty special but he is right not to get carried away by the achievement. He would, after all, be ranked only seventh in Spain, sixth in the US and fifth in Argentina. In fact, he would not even be the top-ranked player in Finland, Slovakia, Chile or Cyprus.
Being Britain's No 1 tennis player right now is like being Hawaii's top-ranked downhill skier. Congratulations, but frankly the competition is not all that hot."

I never thought I'd be so happy after Tommy beating Murray, but seeing their results I guess you have to take the chance to celebrate this as a nice victory

also it was really windy out there and I think Murray had some issues with that. Robredo was playing like there was no wind. It was a great, inspired performance from Tommy and Andy couldn't cope with his heat or the conditions.

I've never realized how athletic tommy was, he had some gorgeous leaping backhands. I think I have now officially become a fan.

I've always thought about Tommy as our very own Federeresque player :p
His backhand is really beautiful but compared to his forehand is too inconsistent in the most important moments  (except last year in RG when playing Safin... I was scared of every ball going to his backhand... but he managed to perform well :))

Sure, he's been losing matches. So what?

It was a bad showing and he should stop making excuses about the wind.

He should not be losing 2 and 2 to a player like Robredo whose return game isn't the best.

10 days till IW, rest up till then.

He should not be losing 2 and 2 to a player like Robredo whose return game isn't the best.Murray's gamestyle leaves him open to being overpowered. Robredo was stepping in and ripping shots, not giving Murray a chance.

Plus, near the end of the match Murray had 6 winners to 21 errors. That COMBINED is what explains the score being as bad as it was. But IMO even if Murray had played his game and played well, he would've lost the way Robredo played.

Andy's not a top 20 player....yet. It's not just one tournament that's got him to where he is now either. And how this loss in a reasonably small event at age 18 is a precursor to a Henman style career, I don't know.

Sounds like he didn't play well, and Tommy did. Happy for Tommy :)
