Tennis Tipping #14 - Indian Wells

Welcome to Tennis Tipping Indian Wells!

What is Tennis Tipping?

In the game, participants pick the winners of all main draw matches and are placed in a knock-out system. That means each participant plays a different participants and whoever predicted the winner of most matches correctly, moves on to the next round. The same applies for doubles, but you're in a team format and your scores are combined.

The Number Of Participants Per Round:

SINGLES:

Day 1 - 96 players
Day 2 - 64 players
Day 3 - 32 players
R32 - 16 players
R16 - 8 Players
QF - 4 Players
SF + F - 2 Players

DOUBLES:

Day 3 - 32 players
R32 - 16 players
R16 - 8 Players
QF - 4 Players
SF + F - 2 Players

Note:

- In case of a tie, a tie-breaker match for which the score (as opposed to just the winner) is given, will decide who moves on to the next round. For all participants, this tie-breaker match is the same and will be assigned beforehand.
- In case a player (i.e. the actual ATP Player) retires in a match, this match will be cancelled and not taken into consideration when calculating the number of correct picks. If players are replaced by a lucky loser after the start of Tennis Tipping, these matches will also be cancelled.

How to Sign-Up:

Just post here that you would like to play. :)
You can only play one tournament per week.
You must commit before the designated time. For this tournament, that time is 10:00AM March 9th in London.
For help with timezones, use this - www.timeanddate.com/worldclock (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock).

Maximum Players for this tournament: 96
Maximum Doubles Teams for this tournament: 48

Currently, entries into a tournament are based on a first-come, first-in basis.

How to send in picks:

Picks can be sent in as soon as all qualifiers have been placed. Remember, you pick a winner in every match! Picks should be sent by PM, so that your opponent does not know your picks. Picks should be titled: TT: [tournament, day #]. Picks can be sent in anytime until the beginning of play each day. Because of the chances of 1st and 2nd Round matches being played on the same day, you should send in tips each day, even if you're not sure if you've made the next round. If you're still in both singles & doubles, you use the same tips for both. For doubles, you still tip the ATP singles matches, not the doubles! No changes can be made.

Good Luck! :wavey:

You'll have to be an alternate for singles - all places are filled, so send in your tips and if someone doesn't send in theirs you'll be in the draw.

You can be in the doubles if you get a partner:)

EDIT You're in the singles draw - looks like a 96 draw event, so people can still commit.

Nah, I think Gavnich has done it correctly. If you go with a 96 player draw you will have to split a round further on to derive 2 players for Semifinals and Final.

I maybe wrong but I think Gavnich has everyone to play the 2 qualifying rounds on Wednesday and Thursday to leave 32 players in the round of 64.

Deccy is right, it should be a 96-player draw with the 32 seeded players receiving a bye in the first round. There is a demand for this among the players it seems, so many people playing TT nowadays!

Certainly a good plan for other TMS tournaments in the future... :yeah:

When I first started the thread I put in a 64 player draw as I thought it fitted the demand for the game with the thought that I would see how many people committed before thinking about increasing the draw size. The previous week Dubai had 32 players, but Acapulco had only 17 and Las Vegas 11, equalling 60 players. The previous week had 3 tournaments with 16 players, plus a few who hadn't been able to get in although I didn't think it was that many.

I'm quite happy to have a 96 player draw, but I don't think we'll come close to filling it. At the moment we have 65 players who have committed. If no else committed then we would only have 1 first round match and with a draw size this big I'm sure at least 3-4 people will forget or be unable to send in their picks, so the alternates would stand a good chance of getting in.

The first and second matches will be played over the first 3 days at IW - schedule of play is at the following link, so I suggest the following structure if we have a 96 player draw rather than splitting the first round.

http://www.pacificlifeopen.com/en/players/schedule/

ATP MTF
Day 1 R96
Day 2 R64
Day 3 R32
R32 R16
R16 QF
QF SF
SF + F F

For a 64 player draw it would work by round with 64 in round 1 and 32 in round 2.

Anyway, I don't mind either way - perhaps we should wait to see how many more commit in the next couple of days but I have a format for each scenario.

I agree it should be a 96-player draw but we can't give 32 seeded players a bye in the first round, else we will end up with 64 TTs in R64 and we will have to split up 2 further rounds.

TMS rounds are different from GS and IS tournaments. This is how I understand it to work if we have 96 TT players

Qualifying Round - 36 ties > 64 TT players 32 TT top ranked byes
R96 - 32 ties - 32 ATP seeded byes > 64 TT players
R64 - 32 ties > 32 TT players
R32 - 16 ties > 16 TT players
R16 - 8 ties > 8 TT players
QF - 4 ties > 4 TT players
SF & F - 3 ties > 2 TT players

We only need to split a round when we have to and we don't need to here. The qualifying rounds here are made of ATP players who we all know like Arthurs, Zib, Garcia-Lopez and the like so it won't be any unknowns.

This way upto 96 TT players can be involved.

This is only a suggestion for Gavnich77. As he is the manager of this tournament I will respect any decision he goes with.

Good luck Gavnich :yeah:

So, what have they done? Did they originally do the draw using last weeks rankings and have now altered to reflect this weeks which has meant Mathieu's lost his seeding and Chela's become a seed, whilst Blake has moved because he had a big climb in the rankings.

What a farce  - I guess the MTF draw should use this weeks rankings for seedings as well then.

Deadline for entries is 9AM GMT tomorrow - the draw will be out shortly afterwards.

At the moment there are 68 entrants which would mean 4 first round matches who would pick Day 1 (Friday) Matches. TT Round 2 would be Day 2 matches on Saturday.

Anyway, you definitely won't lose first round as you'll be seeded and will get a bye :p

Right, the format for Tennis Tipping Indian Wells will be as follows:

Singles
ATP............................................ .TT Singles
Day 1 (1st Round Matches) ..............1st Round (4 matches + 60 BYES)
Day 2 (1st & 2nd Round Matches) .....2nd Round (32 Matches)
Day 3 (2nd Round Matches) .............3rd Round (16 matches)
Day 4 & 5 (3rd Round Matches) ........4th Round (8 matches)
Day 6 (4th Round Matches) .............QF (4 matches)
Day 7 & 8 (Quarter Finals) ...............SF (2 matches)
Day 9 & 10 (SF & F) .......................Final (1 match)

The doubles will start from day 3.

There are 68 singles competitors and 25 doubles teams. For the first time in Tennis Tipping the doubles teams will be seeded as we now have doubles rankings. This will be done as per the ATP by combining the individual doubles rankings of each team member. There will be 32 singles seeds and 8 doubles seeds. The top 7 doubles teams will get a bye in the first round.

As all the polls and discussions have failed so far to reach a conclusion, I will use the rules that I prefer for this tournament only.

1. Lucky Losers - These will only be used for the first round. If a player does not send in their picks in the second round they will be replaced by the highest scoring loser in the first round as long as they've sent in their picks. If a player fails to send in their picks after the second round his/her opponent will receive a walkover.

2. Even scores - matches that are tied on points will be determined by tiebreaker first as a used always. If the tiebreak score is equal I will use countback (score in previous round), then the tiebreaker in the previous round if still equal, followed by CB2, TB2, etc. If all things are equal, then ranking will be used as the last resort to determine the winner.

Therefore, even if you are not involved in the first round, I suggest you still send in your tips incase countback is required. For the first two rounds, the ATP rounds are split over 3 days meaning there is a mix of 1st and 2nd round matches on Day 2 of the ATP tournament. For this, you can either send in your scores by round or by day - whatever's easiest for you. If you're drawn to play me in singles or doubles then you should send your tips to $@M and I will do the same.

The draws will be released shortly.

Confused  . Any questions, let me know.

Good luck to everyone and welcome to the game for all the new competitors. :wavey:

Tennis Tipping #14 Indian Wells Preview

Tennis Tipping heads to Indian Wells for the first Masters Series event of the game. Most of the games top players are here for what should be a memorable event. The field is headlined by top seed greatkingrat. The Australian open champion may have struggled to recapture that success since but you can never count him out and he will be looking to prove that he is a big event player when he opens against robrulz5.
#2 <Lt*Alonso*CL> is missing from this event, which means el guero is the second seed. The Finn has been in fine form since reaching the Australian Open quarter finals, capturing his first title at Zagreb and finishing as runner up in Memphis. He starts his campaign against the Argentine maxmirnyi.
The third seed is Bolar Bolabi who has been putting in some consistent performance since reaching the semi finals at his native Australian Open, reaching the semis in Delray Beach also. He has stayed in North America since the Australian Open and will be looking to bounce back after a couple of early defeats in his last 2 events in Memphis and Las Vegas as he opens against linus.
Fourth seed _pyromatic has also been putting together an impressive record since reaching the Australian Open quarter finals. Fresh off a semi final appearance in Dubai, he was also a runner up in Marseille. He faces a tricky opening match though against doubles specialist Iza.

The fifth seed is Labamba. whose confidence must be sky high after winning against a tough field in Dubai. The Finn put in some memorable performances in the Middle East and will be hoping to carry that momentum through as he starts against Austrian tiptopdaisy.
Clay court specialist invu2day is the #6 seed. Having captured back to back titles in Brazil and Acapulco, the Brit is currently on an 8 match winning streak and it will be interesting to see if he can transfer that form onto hardcourts. He opens against fellow dirtballer Denaon.
#7 seed JMG had been putting together a solid, if unspectacular set of results before making a breakthrough last week by reaching the Dubai final. The German pushed Labamba all the way, but lost out in the end and will be hoping to start off well as he faces his friend and former doubles partner bavaria100 in the second round.
Rounding out the top 8 seeds is another claycourter keqtqiadv. The Brazilian won in Vina Del Mar, but has also shown he can play on hardcourts by reaching the last 16 at the Australian Open. In an all South American clash, he starts his campaign against newcomer bcgpete.

Dangerous floaters to look out for include alansk, sheva, coreyschucky, Sylvester and Smasher whilst there are several unknown quantities playing in Indian Wells who will be looking to make a name for themselves and make a dent in the rankings. However as with most Tennis Tipping tournaments there is no clear favourite to take the title and everyone has a chance.

So I'm still confused. What matches (which day) actually count for us who had a first round bye? And which ones would be used for countback?

Maybe just send in all your tips for the 1st round at once. Then pick out the 2nd round matches whenever they will be played.

The 2nd round starts from Day 2, but if you're tied after the tiebreaker and you send in day 1 scores I can use that for countback

would it be better for us to send out tips in day by day because of the 1st and 2nd round matches being mixed between day 1 and 2?

Yes, it would as the tb will be per day for the first 2 rounds. I was just trying to let people know that they can send their tips in however they like.

You don't have to, but I would advise you to incase countback is needed in later rounds when you're tied with your opponent.
ok,i will send it!

I can't see your commitment anywhere - however you can send in your tips and be an alternate if you like.

If someone doesn't send in their tips in the first round only then you can replace them in the draw.

Remember, Gavnich77 and The Safinator, you two are to send your tips to me !!!

Sheva, I think you have to as well... (since you're partnering Gav in doubles ~) :)

Doubles doesn't start till Day 3 (Sunday) so we'll worry about when it starts :)

I'm just hoping I get through the first 2 days with no problems first :)

Just to confirm that the Sam Querry vs Bobby Reynolds match won't count as Reynolds replaced Taylor Dent in the draw.

Good preview, Gavnich77. I'm really a claycourt player, but I think I can do some damage on hard, or even on grass.

Good luck, bcgpete.
I have a tough draw, with Rosie on third round, Gavnich on fourth, Bolar and LaTenista on QFs. Anyway, they would be great matches. I hope I can win some rounds here.

I didn't send first day picks. If some today matches are postponed due to rain, will they count for round one, round two or both? I guess it's only for first, but it's good to confirm it.

Scores updated after 12 matches - Bad Gambler replaced sidespinner in the draw.

Due to the number of first round matches that were delayed by rain and held over to Day 2 (including the tie break match) these matches played on Day 2 that were originally scheduled will still count for TT Round 1, therefore those still involved in first round matches should still send in their Day 2 picks as TT first round won't finish before these matches start. If you lose, I will just discard your day 2 picks.

Everyone else can start sending in their tips now for those Day 2 matches listed on the front page excluding the ones that have been rescheduled (most have already sent in Day 1 picks aready) :)

What is the tiebreaker for round 2????

No, you should have tipped Day 2 as that is TT Round 2

Please send in your Day 3 tips as per the matches on the front page :)

The rain  is really messing things up but I'm keeping the format the same and counting the matches that would have been played as the matches for each TT round so that we can stay on track when we get to the third round. Today's matches also count for Doubles First Round.

Updates

TT first round matches are now complete. Although there is still one match to count towards the final score, this match does not affect the outcome of the results. Congratulations to marksman, keep_er_lit, PoderShileno and Sandra for winning their matches.

However, Buffel, Buddy and bcgpete did not send in Day 2 picks so as stated earlier for this round only there are 3 LL spots which have gone to Aguante_el_gato, vamos israel and bad gambler. The draw has been updated to reflect this.

The Spadea - Berlocq match on Day 2 has been discounted as Berlocq retired during the second set. The scores for TT have been updated after 5 matches with 10 more to play.

Don't forget to send in your tips for Day 3 matches as per the front page (i.e., the rest of the ATP second round). These will count for TT 3rd round and Doubles 1st round.

Yes, they will - I listed them as they should have been played today if there hadn't been any rain delays. It may be a bit confusing, but it means that when ATP 3rd round is played we can get back on track and have that as TT 4th Round :)

Gavnich you are doing a fantastic job here under very difficult conditions. It's not your fault that the rain has been dumping on Indian Wells.

As for us getting confused, just refer to Gavnich's updates in the first post of the thread and you will know what tips to send in. I'd be confused if it wasn't for the good updates as I'm sure Gavnich must be getting VERY confused!

Jess, no one knows the 2nd round scores yet so it's correct to keep sending in tips... Plus you need to anyway coz you are in doubles right?
