Gah, Massu was said to be an easy fav.

Dude Martin must be near washed up or something.

On the other hand good to see the biggest fighting Chilean step up again!

After what Martin has been through recently I'd say it was a very good effort to defend his points from last year, not that he was "washed up". Pity he couldn't take the title this time, but Rockin' Raccoon will not be denied!

Um, I think that might have been me, sorry - but I was not the one who first coined the phrase, it was used by a commentator over here during the 2003 WTC to try and explain what Massu's ponytail reminded him of. ;) I just popularised it, but to be honest, I use it with a little more affection now than I did back in the days of 03.04. :p

I don't like it either.

I like his ponytail, and I love his long hair. He's my rocker boy. :rocker2:

But now known as The Comeback Kid for his amazing climb back up after it looked like he may not have much of a career left after all those injuries last year.

I was just complaining that Moya's win over Massu last week didn't mean much because he has done very little since the Olympics. I tip my hat to Massu, congratulations to him on a good week.

Though he's one of the players I least like on tour, gotta admire his fighting abilities that has seen him with these nice results, especially winning Costa do Sauipe now. Congrats Massu!

Poor Martin, two finals in a row. Who knows maybe he will win the event next year. ;)

Martin played poorly and was completely outplayed by Massu, who dominated the whole match with the exception from the last few games when he got tight. Congrats Massu. :hatoff:

Come on, it's not like he fell out of the top 100 or anything. ;)

Congrats to Massu.

Good week for Beto and disappointed that he couldn't win the title and dedicate the victory to his recently deceased mother.

Come on, it's not like he fell out of the top 100 or anything. ;)

On one hand, you're right. But at the same time, you're wrong.

For a long time after his injuries, he was just a step behind out there especially on return of serve. I could tell by his comments last summer that he was concerned whether he could comeback 100% in singles. He said he wasn't moving the way he used too before his injuries. Even at the beginning of this year, he seemed slower at first.

And this past summer especially was just very stressful for him (and his fans). He had like 1200 (something like that) points to defend. And he didn't feel 100%. For a Roger or Andy those types of points are an average day's work - but for a guy like Nico, they aren't - even when they feel 100% physically. And again, he wasn't feeling 100% physically. And the stress really took a toll on him.

I went to all his tournaments in the States this summer and especially saw how overwhelmed he felt at Cincy where he had to defend the 400 points from the Olympics - I've never seen him so stressed. He commented to the Chilean press during that week that they were all concerned about his ranking but he was concerned about trying to completely comeback to his regular level of play.

Johnny Mac talked to Nico at Wimbledon and talked about it at one of Nico's matches at the US Open how overwhelming it would be for a player like Nico to have to defend all those points, and how Nico just had to start over from the beginnning again.

Which is what he did during the off season. He only took 3 weeks off, and then went and trained hard in Buenos Aires for 4 weeks. Got a new fitness coach - a guy that also works for Boca Juniors - and got a sports psychologist. He really sacrificed and its paying off now. :yeah:

And its why this title is so special and means so much for all Nico's fans.

sadly, it seems Brit commentators started using that way back in about 2002 - Mark Petchy ( Murray's coach now) and Chris Bailey coined it - always called him Racoon Man - and they weren't verynice about his game either......
