Wow, an all-Swiss and an all-Russian 1st round affairs!

This has to be the best tournament outside the TMS and GS list.

Such a bad draw for Wawrinka. I think Davydenko will be too much for Safin at this stage of his comeback.

Anybody know why Agassi is playing here and not Las Vegas? I mean, why would he travel halfway around the world when he could play in his own city? I'm sure he's not exactly hard up for cash. And the field is a lot stronger in Dubai. What's he thinking?

Oh, some unfortunate 1st rounds there with Federer vs Wawrinka, Safin vs Davydenko, Nadal vs Mathieu and O. Rochus vs Santoro. But that's how it happens in packed tournaments, better than all these names withdrawing. ;)

Safin has a tough match in his comeback, but if he's really fine, he should at least be able to give Davydenko some problems.

Roger's draw seems easy on paper until Berdych (and do we even know if he's gonna be consistent enough to get there playing well?), hope Wawrinka tests him a bit and that's it. :)

Fab vs Oli.. :(

If Mathieu is playing well, I can see him giving a tough time to Nadal, hope that happens! Allez Paulo, Fab and Fed! :)

Poor Marat, not the easiest of draws for him, though I hope it motivates him to go far. Mathieu-Nadal, Wawrinka-Federer, Safin-Davydenko, Santoro-Rochus, there are lots of potentially good first round matches here at least!

Ever heard of something called money ?? Agassi gets so much money for playing in Dubai that even if THE MIRAGE casino in VEGAS decided to give Agassi and his whole family freedom to gamble there for the whole week for free we will still play in the dessert.
Federer receives lots of money to play there too . It´s normal , they go wherever they pay more.
Romance is gone in the ATP TOUR, sad but true

Of course I've heard of money. I know they have ridiculous appearance fees in Dubai, but as I said in my original post, Agassi is hardly in desperate need of money. I wouldn't think the money would be that important for him anymore. But what do I know?

Agassi Aces

At this stage of his career, Andre does not need money. He is playing simply to test himself against the very best in the world. Playing Dubai rather than Las Vegas would do that. A win against Federer or Nadal would bring back belief that he could win a Slam, but a win in a minor event like Las Vegas would just make people say "the field was weak anyway". Andre wants to test himself against the very best in the game, thats why he is playing!!!!!!

Oh come on, you don't think Agassi is motivated by money any more? How about a nice donation to his school?

He's playing Dubai because he'll get a huge guarantee, and he probably signed a multi-year contract before the Las Vegas tournament was even thought of.

I don't think he's flying all the way to Dubai just to possibly play Fed or Nadal. Didn't Fed beat him up pretty bad there last year?

Well, if he's going to be injured, why does he need to be tested by Federer or Nadal at all?

Steffi's probably going to check out a new holiday home on one of those offshore islands they're building, as Andre's already put a deposit on the island designed in the shape of North America.

Exactly. Agassi is a very rich man, but it is not like he is a billionaire businessman. $500,000 or whatever he is getting is still a big chunk of change. Remember, the UAE wants prestige for their horse racing events, golf events, and tennis events. The tournament is not out there to make money. The tournament is there to bring prestige to the city and therefore they can hand out whatever amounts of cash to Federer, Agassi, and Nadal.

So, is Agassi going for the money? Sure. Is it wrong? No. All of us would probably do the same thing.

Marat on his comeback will be fascinating, especially as he's playing a countryman.

Rusedski v Agassi, the old rockin chair dudes.

Stan is good, he certainly won't roll over for Ninja that's for sure.

According to draw (of 32),

They are 5 players who won Roger within 2004-05 (Roger lost 10 matches to 9 players in these 2 years) to take place in Dubai.

BERDYCH - Athens Olympics 2004 - R32
SAFIN - Australian Open 2005 - SF
HRBATY - Cincinnati AMS 2004 -R64
HENMAN - Rotterdam 2004 - R32
NADAL - Miami AMS 2004 - R32, Roland Garros 2005 - SF

HRBATY is the player who was not defeated by Roger within 2004-05 (I should say he was never defeated by Roger in career time)

Also, here are runners-up of Roger's 24 straight finals win :

SAFIN - Australian Open 2004, Halle 2005
ANDREEV - Gstaad 2004
AGASSI - Tennis Masters Cup 2003, US Open 2005
HENMAN - Indian Wells AMS 2004
F. LOPEZ - Dubai 2004
NADAL - Miami AMS 2004

Also, NIEMINEN is the runner-up of Munich 2003 (Winner is Roger)

It is wonderful that Roger will face his countryman in 1sr Round and either 1 Wild-card Arabian player in 2nd Round.
