Thomas Johansson out for four months with eye injury

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Swede Thomas Johansson will be sidelined for four months after injuring his eye during a training session on Thursday.

Johansson, the world number 13, was preparing for Friday's doubles quarter-final at the Rotterdam World tournament with his playing partner Mario Ancic when a ball hit him in the eye.

The 2002 Australian Open winner had to have surgery at the Dijkzigt hospital in Rotterdam to repair a detached retina.

Tournament doctor Babette Pluim said Johansson would be out of action for four months and cannot fly for three weeks.

The fourth seeded Swede had already lost in the first round of the men's singles to Briton Tim Henman on Wednesday.

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse for ToJo :(

Bad luck for Tojo, always frustrating when a player gets an injury that is 'freak'. Hhmm...not sure if anybody follows football, but exactly the same thing happened to a Liverpool F.C player last week...except he got a boot in the face. Suppose it just shows how hard the tennis balls are hit.

Ouch, poor guy. The only bright side is that of those four months, two of them will be the claycourt season where he wouldn't have done well anyway. But still, this is a real momentum-stopper after a great 2005, I just hope the long break doesn't end up finishing his career because of the time he'll lose.

The Swedes have had the worst luck with injuries.

ToJo was really upset at the end of his Henman match, I hope he didn't do anything stupid to cause this.

This will most likely keep him from slam contention for the rest of the year.

I'm pretty sure I recall Carlita telling me that Mario hit him in the eye with the ball because she was there. So it seems that Mario IS the culprit ;)

Get well soon ToJo. Such terrible luck!

Tennis players should start wearing googles when facing Mario, Karlovic or Roddick.

This is so sad  Eye surgery is horrible - and ToJo must be really careful not to rush back too quickly or he could do permanent damage  I truly hope he makes a full recovery - he is a great player and a great guy and he will be missed. And spare a thought for Mario - I'm sure he feels worse than anyone (apart from ToJo himself) right now.

It's not like Mario went out there to intentionally smash someone in the eye!
And even then, if he did... he would probably miss ;)

Makes me think of that time when Jarkko and Sanguinetti were playing/warming up or something... and Jarkko ended up with a ball in the eye (though I think he did it to himself, from a bounce). The poor guy looked in so much pain, so I can't even imagine what this is like for ToJo.

Poor Mario, he must feel terrible
Hopefully ToJo will do a PimPim, and be ready asap, but not risk anything. Kom igen ToJo  Hopefully he can use this to motivate himself. :worship:

With Ancic it should be okay, nobody should seriously blame him for this ;) But just imagine when a bad boy with a bad reputation had done this. People would say things like "This asshole intentionally smashed into his body, I hate him. Such a jerk, he had the whole field open and hits his head"
Or when this happened to Leander Paes in a doubles match against the Bryans; Paes already whined like a baby about the Bryans that they volley into his body at the net, most normal everyday business in doubles

Good luck for the surgery and for recovery, ToJo! :yeah:

Could be a blessing in disguise. May come back at Queens for a warm up, and then win Wimbledon. Good way to go out.

If ever Roger were to stumble, who else would be more of a likely choice to win? And please, don't mention Roddick.
