This thread is where we will preserve some of the funniest and dumbest tennis headlines that we've seen from around the world (i.e. Yahoo). This has happened so often in the past, and continues to happen, that it simply must have its own thread. :)

I'll start. I was perusing the Sports Illustrated and Yahoo sites today and found a double whammy. Look closely at Yahoo's women's singles rankings.

Here are some more headlines I had saved from the past.

The first one is from Hindu Times which appeared in July 2005.

The second pic is from Roddick's official website. It's not a headline but it is funny and no, it wasn't photoshopped either. It really happened.

And even the ATP's site has its Yahoo moments, recently reporting that it was Gaudio who played the Davis Cup tie against Sweden (psst! :secret: it was really Jose Acasuso in Gaudio disguise) ;)

The Federer headline from Yahoo was real and appeared in January 2005 after he lost to Safin. Classic.

Just that he is down as having played Bjorkman in the DC tie against Sweden when it was Acasuso who played instead; not the biggest blunder, but still easily avoidable.

I don't think that's a mistake ;) because in a German newspaper it should go without saying that Haas is a German tennis player and therefore with German players they mostly write the location where they live or were born, I've seen that often already.
With SchŁttler they often write "Korbach", with Mayer "Bayreuth", with Kiefer "Hannover" or "Holzminden".

I forgot to take a screencap of this but this headline was from the ATP site:

I've seen this ludicrous statement made numerous times in reference to Schalken, I agree it is quite bizarre. I get the feeling some journalists just look at his height on the ATP bio, look at his consistent results on grass, decide that 2+2=5 and conclude that he is a big server. Flattering, but daft, considering that he can barely serve faster than 110mph at best. He's also been referred to as "the Netherlands' finest all-courter", which may be true in his own country but he is certainly no net-rushing serve-volley specialist.

Brilliant! Saying that Schalken has a big serve is like saying Roddick is a favourite for Roland Garros. :)
Schalken is the best Dutch all-rounder though (having won tournaments on every surface and every continent), but given his competition here atm, that doesn't account for much!

I've wondered reading the comments, What makes someone a Federer or Nadal fan? Do the old-schoolers go for Federer, and kids for Nadal? For myself, I prefer watching Nadal because he keeps it interesting: I'm never quite sure he's going to win, until he does.

Here's one straight from the US Open website today (9/4):

Berdych Outlasts Tursunov in Tight Five-Setter
It started out rather flat and uninspired when Number 12 seed Tomas Berdych of Czechoslovakia took on Number 23 seed Dmitry Tursunov of Russia in round three of men's US Open action.

__________________________
Ok, I know not everyone is a geography major, but isn't it already common knowledge that Czechoslovakia hasn't existed for 13 years! Even some commentators make this mistake.

It bugs me since the Czech Republic and Slovakia have pretty good tennis players, with a really strong tennis history.

Davydenko and Safin lead Russia in Davis Cup final

MOSCOW (AFP) - World number three Nikolay Davydenko and two-time Grand Slam winner Marat Safin will spearhead Russia against Argentina in the Davis Cup final to be played on December 1-3.

Russia's team captin Shamil Tarpishchev also named Dmitry Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny in the side with Igor Andreev called in as a substitute.

"Mikhail (Youzhny) finally managed to overcome his ankle injury," Tarpishchev said. "He has already started practicing and we can count on him in the doubles rubber against Argentina."

Youzhny was the hero of the Davis Cup final against France in Paris four years ago, when Russia won the trophy for the first time. He came back from two sets down to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu in the decisive fifth rubber.

"I still do not know exactly Argentina's line-up but it's obvious that David Nalbandian, who is eighth in the world now, will be our most serious problem in the upcoming final," Tarpishchev said.

Russian team to face Argentina in the Davis Cup final:-

Nikolay Davydenko

Marat Safin

Tennis: Spain earns place against Spain in Hopman Cup final

By Bill Scott, dpa

Perth, Australia (dpa) - Spain reached the final of the Hopman Cup mixed teams event through the back door as Croatia eliminated rival the Czech Republic Thursday night.

Under the complex mathematical formula which governs the eight- nation event, Mario Ancic's 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 defeat of Czech Tomas Berdych denied the Eastern Europeans a place in the Friday night title match.

"I've been progressing from match to match," said Ancic. "Today I really got used to all the conditions,

"It was a great match. I'm very happy to win a match with a lot of confidence before the Australian Open."

Federer, Roddick win in contrasting style
Sportal

World No.1 Roger Federer has survived a scare on day one of the AAMI Classic at Kooyong in Melbourne while defending champion Andy Roddick cruised through his first match.

In gruelling conditions with the temperature soaring well beyond 30 degrees, Federer was pushed all the way by Czech world No.12 Radek Stepanek before registering a tight 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Roddick defeated German Tommy Haas in straight sets, 6-2 6-3, on the back of the news that he may be without coach Jimmy Connors for next week's Australian Open after the former world No. 1's mother Gloria passed away.

Roddick is unsure if Connors will make the trip back to Australia following the death of the former tennis professional and he also took time to offer his condolences.

"I just, you know, wish him and his family the best. We're still talking every day, and you know, I'm not sure. He needs to do what he needs to do," Roddick said after his win.

The world No.6 said he is confident Connors' absence will not affect his preparation and the two will still remain in close contact even if his coach decides to remain in the US next week.

"The good thing is, this is a great tournament. I mean, I had, you know, arguably my best tournament last year was in Cincinnati, and we were talking on the phone," he said. "We have put the work in together and I think we're on the same wavelength."

"Regardless of what happens, he'll be watching the matches and we'll be talking. Obviously I'd love to have him here, but right now I'm not sure if that's on option, and so you make the best of it."

"But his influence isn't gone, you know, right now. You know, he's still very much involved."

Results from day one of the AAMI Classic at Kooyong:
Andy Roddick (USA) bt Tommy Haas (Germany) 6-2 6-3
Roger Federer (Switzerland) bt Radek Stepanek (Czech Republic) 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5)

This was an interview transcript and love the use of the Spanish language here.

http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=40686

Q. So why do you think so many people have pulled out of this tournament then?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Because it's a small tournament. Second one, I don't think so nobody care about here, tournament. Need to prepare, like if you go through a few matches and go to prepare for Australian Open. It should be the same like balls and surface normally is the same, but after I play last year, like I play every year here, they're coming to Melbourne, a little bit different. The court is a little bit more slow and balls flying not so fast like here. That's why somebody maybe want to prepare a few days before.

Q. Do you think if the surface was closer to Sydney than Melbourne, less players would withdraw?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Normally like everybody try just -- I don't know how you say, like normally I like to play before Grand Slam tournament. Like I won New Haven before US Open, I won Poertschach before Roland Burros, then play semifinals in Grand Slam. I don't feel tired. Is good prepare. Sometimes maybe if you feel great -- if I feel great, I like to play here, I like to finish here tournament how I can. If I want to win, I try to win here. But if there's some injury, you feel tired before a Grand Slam, better retire from here and go there. Just you have a few days to take off, take rest, and you can already just start good from first round.

Vamos Roland donkeys.

Actually I think it was transcribed wrong with Roland Burros unless Davydenko meant to have a go at Nadal.

I'm surprised Todd Martin's comeback has received so little attention. Unfortunately he has been forced to withdraw from Costa do Sauipe. His cousin Alberto replaces him in the draw.

Thanks to Neenha for the "Murray" headline. LOL.

I grabbed this one off of tennis-x today. Tennis-X has always been a Hater's Paradise but this has to be one of their most unprofessional headlines yet. The copy isn't much better.

the ATP have unveiled new plans to make things tougher for Federer. He now has to play 4 matches just to get through the first round including one against himself:

Another Russian, Evgeny Korolev, made the most of his reinstatement as he beat American Sam Querrey 6-4 6-4 to reach his first ever ATP Tour semi-final.

The 19-year-old, a cousin of former Russian women's number one Anna Kournikova, saved two break points in the 10th game to serve out for the first set.

Stepanek seems to have changed his first name, and now Moya comes from Argentina ?? What the ....??

FEDERER COULD SET RECORD IN PLO FINAL - March 7, 2007:

...."Federer, winner of the last three tournaments at Indian Wells and unbeaten this year, has an opening-round bye. In the second round, he is to oppose the winner of a match between Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic and a qualifier, then likely would engage either Roger Stepanek of the Czech Republic or Carlos Moya of Argentina".

In China if you search for "Andy Murray" you get some articles about how great the great leader is. That happens no matter what you put in the search box.

This BBC article has just appeared. The writer believes this is the 5th time in a row Delic has beaten Davydenko despite the fact he/she goes on to comment that it is his first win against a top 10 player.

Sjengster
03-27-2007, 02:45 AM
It's very poor phrasing - what they mean is it's his fifth win in a row at this tournament and it came against Davydenko, but that doesn't emerge from the way the sentence is constructed.
