Will Safin win another Slam?

I think cat asked a legitimate question in the Haas thread about Safin on winning another Slam and it deserves a thread of its own.
I think this guy is too young and has too much game not to win another slam, a lot of people may not agree with me but I actually thought that Safin experiencing these loses might actually do him good in the long run. I really really hope that eventually he gets royally pissed at himself and loosing that he finally decides to win not only in thought but in deed!

Not until he gets a real coach. I hope he will get back Alexander Volkov.

I would be surprised if he doesn't have at least 5 at the end of his carreer - but I dont expect he's going to do things like Sampras did..

He'll be more sporadic like kart said.

I think he has the talent to dominate, but I dont think the mental aspect is there.

Frankly at the end of their carreers, Hewitt might end up the better player.

yes he will

a reporter once asked Marat this same question, if he thinks he'll ever win another slam, and Marat replied, "Yes, i will - otherwise i shoot myself!" ;)

So I guess that we are all in agreement, that unless Marats arm falls off, he will in another major?

he is much too talented not to. he gets soooooo frustrated with himself that he ends up being frustrating to watch. but if/when he gets it together, he will be a winner all the way. ;)

Thanks for a little credit warfreakbix!

Angelica, it's just a matter of time? Time runs out very quickly on tennis players. of that there is no doubt.

Well, the 2 years since Safin won the U.S. Open have come and gone, and he has not added to his slam total.

And Marat often has back problems or elbow problems. And his serve isn't nearly as good as I thought it would be. He gets into big matches this year, and his first serve is nowhere to be found.

I had hoped Safin could be in the grand slam title range of 6 or more, like Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Mats Wilander. Now, I would be thrilled with 5 grand slam titles for Marat Safin as Becca predicts. I only hope Becca is better with predictions than most of us are! ;)

He'll definitely win more. If he hadn't won the US Open and he had gone on for a few years not winning any more Slams, then he could have become like Goran, because I always think they are very alike in terms of personality, and it could have become a real mental barrier for him. But he doesn't need to worry about that, he'll win more for sure.

He won't until he finds a real coach and until he finds a good woman who loves him, underestands him and take care of him.
all he needs is love
He has everything to be the best tennis player and dominate the circuit for the next 3 years

How soon we forget that Marat is only 22. He's been around for a long time, and won his slam at a young age, so of course he has time to win another. And I think he will.

If I'm not mistaken Agassi didnt win his first slame untill he was 22?

Hmmm, he can whenever he decides to raise his head and go ahead. (no pum intended... :p) If he keeps the attitude he has right now, its gonna be tough. He just needs to believe in himself and his abilities. If he manages to do that, yes he will win.
If not, he still can because of his enormous talent, but its gonna be A LOT more difficult.
Ive been watching of his matches since the beggining of the year. He is playing great stuff. But then he puts into his head that its not enough: and he sinks.
Just go for your shots and let it be, Marat. :)

The following post is not written by me but by another Marat fan from MaratSafin.com's forum. It touched me so much that i'd like to share it with you all.

"As much as I love Marat for his game, his charm , even his looks.. I really feel for him because of his vulnerability. He has a fragile core. But it is not because he is weak, it is because he is so sensitive. There is a haunting sadness about his losses. I cannnot imagine the burden he carries. To be so abundantly gifted ,to be so keenly aware of the responsibility and expectations this gift carries, and yet cursed with such terrible self doubt ..that inevitably this supposed talent deserts him when he wants it to work so desperately. His feet turn to lead and mind a chaotic mess of fear and adrenaline..

Marat,I think you need to learn to let go. You need to learn to attain a zen state of semidetachment.
Let the game come to you Marat .Let it flow.It is in your hands and feet, it is in your racquet and in your speed..The journey you want to make from now to the centrecourt US Open 2000 is internal..And when a journey is internal it can take decades or it can be over in an instant. You know this road. You have walked on it before. What you need , you already have...Good luck .."

Marat is a powerful force on the ATP. IT's great to see him play but evidently he doesn't seem to be a fighter when he's down. He's got to work on controlling the temper. Yes break racquets, why not?...But play the big points when you have to.

To answer your question, YEs of course he'll win a few more SLams!

So truthfully written...Marat and Roger seem to be in the same boat these days.

Yes - how many depends on him. If he gets himself a good coach and not a friend which is what I feel Amit is, then he can clean up. If he wants to stay as he is now and travel with a friend then not so many.

He sure wins when people least expected it...:)....
But he did reach the final in 2004, so I gotta give that to him. I think the next one he is going to win is probably Wimbledon, I dont expect him to win in Roland Garros, not jinx him or anything;).

Yes he will. With a right mentality and psychological state he can win many many more. There is no tennis player as versatile and talented as him apart from Roger on the ATP tour. Marat is his worst enemy and if he finds peace within himself...God help them all!!!!!!!!

11-08-2005, 09:57 PM
There really are no grounds to dismiss Marat's chances of winning another slam, last time he was 100% and playing good tennis, he was able to conquer World #1 Roger Federer.

He obviously still has plenty of good tennis left in him, thus I'd see no reason to take away from his chances.

As long as the Australian Open is being played, Marat Safin will be a GS threat and behind that I'd say the French Open is his best opportunity at this stage in his career. I simply don't think that he'd be able to get past Roger or even Roddick in NYC and he will never succeed on grass.

This question is a bit foolish, aside from the fact that he's been injured Marat's career is going fine and since he hired Peter he's been on his best behavior. :)

Jimnik

If he does, it will probably be another AO title. Roland Garros will be more difficult now with Nadal in the mix. I can see him maybe reaching the semi-final or final but it's unlikely he'll win it.

Marat, why don't you like grass? The surface is good for you.
