Ferrero and Federer just started and the latter broke 2-0. These kinda matches are still a bit strange. Interesting to see how motivated the two are...

Lady
11-14-2003, 05:24 PM
Roger 3*-1 30-0

lose all 3 matches then win DAVIS CUP

Aurora

Great way to put something not so good into a something nice, Egg! (Just the prospect of the Spanjards giving the Australians a hard time will do for me)

Deboogle!.
11-14-2003, 05:31 PM
Fed's really hitting his shots today... too bad for Ferrero, don't want to see him go 0-3 and I'd like to see him secure the y-e #2

Aurora
11-14-2003, 05:56 PM
This is gonna be a real short one... Federer's definitely the man of the tournament so far!

tall_one
11-14-2003, 05:58 PM
yeah but remember Federer went undefeated in the round robin last year and then go beat in the semis...

Winston's Human
11-14-2003, 05:59 PM
Given Roger's performances in the round robin matches, it is hard to see him not winning the whole tournament.

Aurora
11-14-2003, 05:59 PM
Just as I'm saying it's gonna be a short one, JC's getting some bp's...

Aurora
11-14-2003, 06:00 PM
5-1*

Aurora
11-14-2003, 06:03 PM
Come on, Roger, finish it within the hour and the two of you can go take a rest!

6/3 6/1 well that was a disappointing match to watch. I had so hoped this would be a good match.

Aurora
11-14-2003, 06:07 PM
Juanqui better make up for this appearance in the fedcup!

Dirk
11-14-2003, 06:07 PM

u mean Davis Cup?

Dirk
11-14-2003, 06:11 PM
Roger says he had a good day today but JC looked to be struggling with the wind. Roger wants to finish number 2 he says and he still does know how he beat Andre and David LOL.... I think he does. The guys said Roger would be very close to Andy if he won this tournament.

martinatreue
11-14-2003, 06:17 PM
Roger :bounce:

Now go RAINER :bounce:

Roger should be kicking himself for losing to Roddick in Montreal, thats what cost him in the end

Dirk
11-14-2003, 06:33 PM
That and the Rome final. He had Andy and then let him in and gave it away.

Aurora
11-14-2003, 06:46 PM
u mean Davis Cup?

:o that's what you get with all the fedcup-whining going on here in Belgium --- :) if the Spanjards showed up there, I would join the moaners though

Aurora
11-14-2003, 06:47 PM

Come on Rainer, you want to be undefeated going into the semis!

TheBoiledEgg
11-14-2003, 07:21 PM
5-5
come on Carlos :D :)

should have broken for 6-5
now he got a 2nd break pt

Venga MOya
yes *6-5 Carlos :D :D

Dirk
11-14-2003, 07:23 PM
The crowd is for Moya, they feel for him losing all of his matches. Moya is so nice and was nice to me when I met him. We could have talked longer but all these ladies were swarming him, no time for guy talk with Dirky.

TheBoiledEgg
11-14-2003, 07:24 PM
7-5 :woohoo: :D :)

go and win this Carlos :)

RogiFan88
11-14-2003, 07:31 PM
:p Wow Carlos! Where did he get that from?? I mean, winning the first set off Rainer??!!

Waddup w Rainer today? Could say the same for Carlos too...

ANyway, HAPPY for ROGI!! 3-0 again! Great stats!

Rogi should just win the whole damn thing... why not?

I keep thinking that Juanqui s have won this last yr... he was SO close... what a shame... will he get the chance again?? And #1 snatched away so cruelly... Pandy barely had to do anything to get #1 -- it practically fell into his lap as other players won and lost... Juanqui truly EARNED his #1... oh well...

Yeah, Rogi DID miss his chances this summer... he really s have won ROMA -- but he was behaving strangely that week -- and I wanted him to win Montreal -- w have been perfect!!

OK, back to the match at hand.

And por favor, Guille, can you beat Pandy tonight??

sparkyfenton
11-14-2003, 07:34 PM
go go carlos

martinatreue
11-14-2003, 07:35 PM
rainer let up and let carlos have it all his own way. that was understandable considering that he is already qualified. but he should have closed that set out.

Carlos 7-5 5-3 :D :)
come on Carlos, close this out :)

Dirk
11-14-2003, 07:51 PM
Wait if Rainer loses he will be 4-4. If Andy wins in 2 sets he will be 5-3, so that means Andy would play Andre tomorrow and no chance for an all USA final. :)

No, Rainer vs. Andre. Rainer ist 1st because of h2h.

Rainer takes it with a smile. ;)

TheBoiledEgg
11-14-2003, 07:57 PM
3 match pts Carlos :D :D

Carlos finally playing like he can :)
ACE !!!!!!!!

Carlos won 75 64 :D :banana::D

Aurora
11-14-2003, 07:59 PM
Nice one, Carlito! Congratulations.
Rainer, you'd better be saving up for the semis!

Dirk
11-14-2003, 07:59 PM
I thought they determined who was the champ and runner up of each group by wins and sets. I don't get it????

TheBoiledEgg
11-14-2003, 08:01 PM
Andre better take the crap out of him
Shittler ending #6 would be bad enough but at #4

Yay Carlosh :hearts:

Finally he was able to play more like he can

jtipson
11-14-2003, 08:27 PM
Yeah, rules are h2h first (although the way they did the doubles was interesting, finding a little rule that they apparently hadn't published!), and then sets, then games percentage.

So actually, Roger and Rainer already had won their groups before any of the third round robin matches were played.

Layla
11-14-2003, 09:01 PM
Looks like my theory about alternate performances is still going strong.

Ferrero - bad, good, bad
Nalbandian - good, bad, good
Moya - good, bad, good
Schüttler - bad, good, bad

And the exceptions continue to be Federer and Agassi who are the only consistent players in the tournament.

I suppose we should expect Roddick to perform well and Coria badly. Not that I desperately want that to happen. ;) In fact, it's about time someone disprooves my theory. :p Go Guillermo!!!

Billabong
11-14-2003, 09:18 PM
I won't be here tonight, so I hope Coria beats Roddick! GOOOOO!

Tricky_Forehand
11-14-2003, 09:52 PM
 Rainer!!

OK, I have a pretty good feeling that Rainer just didn't want to put forth the effort for a 3 setter but I'm still pissed!! I really didn't want to see Carlos go 0-3 (although it would've been awesome for Roger and Rainer to be the undefeated ones :D ) but did Rainer have to make it so obvious that he was handing it to Carlos in the second?? :(

Carlos played better than he really had to in that second set but I'm glad that he showed that cared about getting at least one win :) .

Wish I could say the same about Juan Carlos. He didn't look like he had anything left to give  .

Can't wait for tonight!! Keeping my thoughts to myself for now :tape:

sparkyfenton
11-14-2003, 10:42 PM
ooooooooo i think this could be a good one.....place in semis at stake for both players and not a dead rubber.......roddicks tie break record hasnt been so hot lately so the key for coria is being patient and taking care of his own serve.

Vamos Guille!

Deboogle!.
11-14-2003, 10:48 PM
I'm just sick of these ugly matches with all kinds of errors or one-sided matches.

Is it me or the only matches that have been really good are the Agassi matches? LOL

sparkyfenton
11-14-2003, 11:20 PM
Your right bunk, hate to say it but the agassi matches have been the quality matches, point for point and incredible shots hit under pressure, the man just walks on greatness and i think he brings out best in opponents LOL

Deboogle!.
11-14-2003, 11:36 PM
Yea... the Federer match was just incredible, it was the only match Ferrero showed any of himself in, and it was the only close match Nalby was in too. Whether Andre himself had anything to do with it or it was just the way it happened, those matches were the only three this whole week that I personally enjoyed watching for the quality of the tennis.

Maybe tonight's will be good, but I'm not placing any bets on that lol

J. Corwin
11-15-2003, 12:11 AM
I have to agree as well. All 3 Agassi matches have been high on quality and drama. I enjoyed them very much.

MisterQ
11-15-2003, 12:15 AM
This has been a great week for Andre, even if he doesn't make it any further. His tennis has been electrifying and brought out the best in his opponents, and he has shown he can still play with them. Which is great.

Hopefully, though, some of these other matches will be great as well. There is certainly the potential for that!

Aurora
11-15-2003, 12:18 AM
despite bp Coria, Roddick holds his serve 2-1. Good to see Guillermo is returning well though! Makes the match more interesting...

super_grover
11-15-2003, 01:16 AM

super_grover
11-15-2003, 01:17 AM
i think the whole "out of 3 sets" sort of cheapens it. It doesnt test staying power. and don't get me started on the draw format.......so does the winner make the semi-finals?

Aurora
11-15-2003, 01:18 AM
none? do you actually like tennis? or do you have an ideal picture in your mind of it which reality can never realise?
tie-break's gonna decide, come on Guillermo!

Roddick/El Aynaoui is as an epic a match as you can get. Those don't come along often, you can't even count on one a year, lol. But I thought Agassi/Federer was amazing tennis, and some of the other matches were also good and very dramatic!

I hope he loses.

So Roger plays Rodduck now? Please explain why.

Top performing player in each round robin group plays the 2nd best performing player from the other group.

Federer (#1 in blue group) plays Roddick (#2 in red group)
Agassi (#2 in blue group) plays Schuettler (#1 in red group)

Ten_Isse_Fan
11-15-2003, 02:11 AM
Why is Andy the second in his group?
Because when two players are tied (Schuettler and Roddick), they use the head-to-head for the players to break the tie. Since Schuettler beat Andy, Schuettler gets first place.

It does sound like it was a great match between both though so I'm looking forward to watching it. I'm not, however, looking forward to listening to the droolfest that is the ESPN commentators. I just hope that they have enough class to give some kudos to Guille for the match that he played.

The Eurosport commentator had all my respect till he mentioned that this win was a good one for the tournament  . I believe that Roger takes on Roddick tomorrow so I'm not too tense ;) .

And yes, that's the tiebreaker when two players have the same amount of matches won.

thanx grover. Eurosport commentator: "this is the best match of the tournament so far" do you guys agree? (always nice to know what you're missing)

When he first said that the score was 6-3 and on serve in the early 2nd I believe. I thought he was kidding!! But, then again, the two best matches (to me) have been Rainer beating Junior and the heartbreak that was David losing last night  . I think this one might rank for at least the second set but if Guille choked as bad as I read (audio cut out at the end) then I'm going to leave the match :fiery: :fiery: .

inabout as close as you can get without crying
he keeps biting his lip and making funny faces

he's playing pretty good though but cant figure out why he's getting his ass kicked

It's probably because many people have been filling his head with the idea that players will be intimidated by him because he's #1. I've heard that said a few time already by the "experts" on ESPN   .

Maybe Roddick thought the occasion would be too much for Guille (and maybe it was at the end) but Guille was obviously much better than he was on Tuesday.

I don't know what happened to Coria but he got this really nervous look in his eyes and I knew he was in trouble. Obviously Andy saw it too because he blew him off the court despite his meltdown.

Andy admits he is mentally and physically drained so it's good he plays late tomorrow night(on ESPN2 in the States at 11p).

If you're a Roddick fan then you missed all the drool heaped on him when he broke Guille back. Just as I expected Roddick wasn't gettin his butt kicked in the 2nd set and beginning of the third because of the level of Guille's play BUT because Roddick was tired. Then, the minute that Guille lost his serve and his level went down all of a sudden all the "magnificent" play that Guille had shown was forgotten and of course the experts just knew that Roddick would pull it out  .

I don't know why but I found it amazing that Guille was in control for so long but it had nothing to do with the shots that he was hitting.

And I hate that tired excuse!! Yes, all the guys are tired and ready for a rest but you didn't see Roger lose a match at all. Or Rainer till today. Both of them have played a lot more than Roddick yet they're doing better in the Masters Cup. Go figure. But Roddick's tired so that's a valid excuse.

If he plays Roger like he played tonight then Roger will have him finished off in straights no problem. And who will get the attention "Roddick is emotionally and physically tired and that's why Roger got the best of him." I can hear it now.

Roger and Roddick will probably play around 3 PM CST tomorrow because they will be after Rainer and Andre. Both matches will be tape delayed on ESPN so again we'll probably listen to it or watch a scoreboard and know the result first. We all know that college football is so much more important   .

Subjective of course, and you're allowed your opinion. IMO, Andy will have had a better year, just by a little.

Federer would have 7 titles, 1 major, and the TMC.
Roddick would have 6 titles, 1 major, 2 TMS, and done better in the slams (total GS points).

Why isn't tiredness an excuse? Maybe tiredness really did affect his play. (Not saying he really was). But a player can be tired.

Coria and Fed have played more and aren't as tired...but that's maybe because they are more physically fit than Roddick. Just because some players aren't tired doesn't mean all players can't be tired.

I'm not saying to put down Coria or any other players' performance. In fact, Guille played quite well until that hiccup in the third set. He truly shows that he can play top tennis on hard courts.

I am not talking points wise but titles wise. Titles are all that matter in the end. TMC is the 5th best title of the year, Wimbledon is the 1st.

IMO Roger will have the better year by winning 2 of the biggest 5 titles.

Yep. That is why the slow deployment of the Tennis Channel pisses me off. I like football but right now I'm more interested in seeing ALL the mentally and physically drained players try to over come that and play quality tennis.

Say what you will, the TMC is WAY more exciting than that tepid soup the WTA served up at their YEC. The cheerleading aside, I like the stadium's intimacy. It's how tennis should be viewed IMHO.

I'm not saying that Roddick wasn't tired and it is a valid excuse but I'm saying that what is his reason for a struggle should be ok to use as a reason for the others. Both Roger and Rainer have to be exhausted as well but I don't think that has been mentioned in regards to them. Actually, the initial reaction to Rainer just not playing like he cared was initially frowned upon till it dawned on all the commentators that "gee, maybe he was conserving energy."

Everyone's tired and not just Roddick. That's all I'm trying to say :) .
