Well, almost time!

Dunno who to root for, Fed or Nalby... and I can only stay for like the first half-hour of the match

And it is another BRUTAL day here in Houston... just like yesterday. Hopefully they'll be able to deal with it better than Coria and Schuettler did

Deboogle!.
11-12-2003, 06:03 PM
well he sounds pretty good about Nalbandian.. hopefully he really believes what they showed him say LOL

Sjengster

Federer with an immediate break - but Nalbandian is going to start threatening his serve sooner or later, he's a good enough returner to break at will.

Aurora
11-12-2003, 06:17 PM
Federer has broken immediately... Could it finally be the day for Roger?

Deboogle!.
11-12-2003, 06:18 PM
Fed broke is serving at 2*-0

another break *3-0 :yeah:

Aurora
11-12-2003, 06:21 PM
Eurosport commentators talking about a slope in the field... really of any significance?
Federer confirms the break, got confidence Roger?

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:21 PM
3-0 - let's just hope it lasts. If he's going to win, Federer has to adopt that Hewitt/Agassi mentality of making the opponent earn every game and trying to beat them as convincingly as possible. The one break per set Sampras philosophy that normally works for him isn't going to do so against Nalbandian since his serve is going to be under pressure all the time.

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2003, 06:22 PM
another break *3-0 :yeah:
It's only one break.

A Nalbandian double fault gifts Federer the double break - hopefully he can wrap this set up now.

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:27 PM
Federer has to raise his serve percentage though - only 42% won't get the job done.

Deboogle!.
11-12-2003, 06:28 PM
and not when Nalby is returning like that!

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2003, 06:28 PM
Eggy the prophet

Now BP Nalbandian though.
Mis-hit deuce.

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:32 PM
Thank goodness, an ace at last. But that game showed why Nalbandian is such a danger, Federer will have to remain strong on serve for the second set because the Great Dave will only start playing better.

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2003, 06:32 PM
5-0

Why do all afternoon matches suck ? :bigcry:

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:34 PM
GoDom, at the moment I'm very happy that this particular match is sucking. I suspect Nalbandian may well raise his game from now on, though...

Roger has some vocal fans in the crowd lol

TheBoiledEgg
11-12-2003, 06:40 PM
maybe trouble ahead :o

fatboy breaks back 2-5

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2003, 06:41 PM
One break back as Roger can't get first serves in.

It's interesting: Once they are both hitting hard from the baseline David is guaranteed to win the point.

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:43 PM
Not a surprise, now you can see why Federer needed that double break. He can't win by just blasting the Band off the court, he has to slice and dice, mix up the pace, force Nalbandian to think about his tactics - he loves slamming winners off Federer's big shots.

11-12-2003, 06:43 PM
Come ON, Roger!!!!!!!!!

By the way, both are getting enthusiastic crowd support. :)

6-3 :yeah: :D :)

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:49 PM
At last, some first serves enabled him to hold for the set. Nalbandian winning those last three games from 0-5 shows we're in for a tough second set, though. Whatever happens, Federer's got to avoid a repeat of the US Open - remember when he won the first set 6-3 there, and then inexplicably went on a mental holiday for the next five games?

Aurora
11-12-2003, 06:50 PM
lol @ "mental holiday" that one's gonna stick in my vocabulary!

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2003, 06:54 PM
I doubt that this racket is still usable.

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:55 PM
It's a perfectly common phrase - would "vacation" make more sense, out of interest?

Federer with a break at the start of the second - if he can hold five times he's home, but these are going to be five of the toughest service games he's ever played... still below 50% first serves!

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 06:56 PM
All right, four of them will be - that was a love game. Please, one more break would be fantastic.

Lee
11-12-2003, 06:57 PM

IMO, American loves to use 'vacation' while Brits 'holiday'. May be the same reason for 'pants' and 'trousers'.

Nice win Roger! Reverse "dominance"!

Sjengster
11-12-2003, 07:25 PM
YEEESSS!!! To anticipate Federer's paraphrasing of Gerulaitis in the interview, no-one beats Roger Federer 6 times in a row! And a bagel, what a brilliant way to do it... I suspect that Nalbandian was heavily off his game with the wrist injury, but still, it's worth updating Love's thread in GM just to let him/her (?) know that domination can't last forever.

Amazing, with Federer's attitude going into the Masters Cup and drawn with his two nemeses, I never would have thought he'd choose the perfect moment to beat them both for the first time. Now beat Ferrero tomorrow and you can keep your perfect group record from last year!

Dirk
11-12-2003, 07:28 PM
Roger did to David what David did to him.

Roger only made 11 Unforced Errors. David made 25 Errors.

Roger hit 13 Winners to David's 8.

WyverN
11-12-2003, 07:37 PM
Federer finally did what he had to do, keep the unforced errors down, this in turn forced David to go for a bit more and it rattled him and forced him into some uncharacteristic unforced errors.
?Not the best match by Nalbandian, one of the worst I seen him play actually, but brilliantly played by Federer

I am so happy for Federer!!!!

This was a long time coming. I posted this yesterday, and now I believe it is even more true. Roger is in a perfect position to win this tournament. He is the one with nothing to lose. He has no pressure, and can just enjoy the tennis and the competition.

Norm Christ just told them that they will have TV time-outs.

"Only stand up when I say 'time'" :fiery:

I have a match on tape from Aussie TV of the match between Brian Vahaly and Vince Spadea at Indian Wells and the same thing was said. That explains a lot why the changeovers are quicker in person than on TV ;) .

Tricky_Forehand
11-12-2003, 08:02 PM
 Not a good match at all by David. I don't think I've seen him spray that many balls or hit that many into the net since I became a "fan" of his.

I do congratulate Roger but I can't cheer. If David had played even close to his best, or how he would normally even play, and still lose to Roger...I would be right there with heaps of congrats. But David was more than off today and, in my opinion, Roger didn't have to do a whole heck of a lot. I know that Roger stayed on top of him because he knows, better than anyone, how David has the ability to fight back. I like Roger so I'm not completely ticked :) .

At least David is still 1-1 with a chance at the SFs although I doubt losing 10 games helped. Still one singles to go and a chance at the day not being a complete loss :) .

Dirk
11-12-2003, 08:19 PM
Like I said before. Roger did to David what David did to him. Roger went through periods of poor play against David and that helped David win. Hell that is the reason Roger was 0-5 to him, don't believe me than go look at the Oz site and Open site for the stats cause I know they are still there. Roger stayed in it today and cut back on his errors and put pressure on David's serve.

That was pretty low from Nalbandian, it was a key point and a very easy shot but instead Nalbandian chose to kill federer instead

This post sounds VERY similar to a post I just read somewhere else under another name. I'll say here, same as the other place, that stats don't always tell the whole story. I've learned that through many years of watching matches on TV and in person.

I understand undying loyalty to a player but I also understand giving credit where credit is due. Roger played a decent match BUT David played nowhere near what he's capable of. He was missing shots that he would've made any other day. Still, the good news is that David does still have a good chance at the SFs.

Now, I'm going to try my hardest not to let certain Roger fans turn me against Roger :D (like I ever would).

Not yet... B&M can reach the semi if A&H beat E&R in 3 sets...
If E&R win, they qualify. If A&H win in straight sets, they qualify...
It's also possible that E&R qualify with 3-sets loss, if they have big win in their winning set and small losses in their losing sets... the possible scores for this are:
6-0 6-7 6-7
6-0 6-7 5-7
6-0 6-7 4-6
6-1 6-7 6-7

Not a huge surprise though Layla, same thing happened at the US Open. It certainly is a surprise if Ferrero was playing as badly as you say he was against Nalbandian, but hey... either the rhythm of Agassi suits him (Andre not as fast or as good in defence as Dave), or else he's realised how much he wants the top spot. The fact that it's being played in cooler conditions at night might help him too...

He was, believe me he was. He even said it himself in the post-match interview. He said he hadn't played like that all year. His assessment was the same as mine then. ;)

Have you noticed that all the day matches were pretty awful, ranging from the excruciatingly boring to the mildly interesting, whereas the night matches have been great so far.

Ah, come on Leo. As a Federer fan I'm getting worried that if Ferrero is suddenly beating Agassi this comfortably he could run straight through Federer, who doesn't have to beat him to make the semis so may not give 100%. Personally I hope he does since that would put him in the hunt for no. 2, but hey... we can agree to disagree on that.

On night matches, I think greater crowd atmosphere (due to involvement of Americans) + plus cooler, more tolerable playing conditions = better quality matches all round.

You realise if Agassi does lose here and Scud plays in his place, that will virtually guarantee Nalbandian a spot in the semis? Not to do Philippoussis down or anything, azza could be on here and I'd hate to do that, but judging by their US Open match Big Dave has the beating of him too.

I don't think pull out. It's different circumstances than last year. This year he's in the US, he's fresh (having not played a match in Europe this fall), and he's not concentrated on the #1 ranking.

It's not the night matches that are an aberration, it's the day matches that are astonishingly bad. In every one of them, at least one player sucked like he's never sucked before, and in the case of Rainer and Coria, they both did. Unusually awful tennis for such a championship. I'm a huge fan of Rainer, and if it wasn't for that, I would have switched off that tv, because that match was unbearable.

True, but he's said himself that the reason why he finds the round-robin format tricky is that he feels that once he loses a match he should be out of the tournament, rather than coming back to play with a second chance to win - hence his reluctance to play meaningless matches and his determination in previous years to go undefeated in the group stage, which has cost him physically in the final (e.g. 1999 and 2000, where he lost in straight sets to players whom he'd beaten easily in the RR).

Personally I hope he does since that would put him in the hunt for no. 2, but hey... we can agree to disagree on that.

I think Federer would give it 100% for two reasons: 1) A win this week over Ferrero would certainly help the next time they play, when Federer might have more to gain, and 2) He wants in the hunt for the #2 ranking. Roger says that he doesn't care about the rankings, but I don't buy it.

According to a poster on GM, David also sucked in his day match two days ago. Supposedly he had 19 ufes in that first set but still won it easily!

Interesting Layla, it shows that Agassi really is fired-up and intense for this match - and I'm not sure that's helping him, he had the same pumped-up, almost fanatical attitude in the match last year and his performance was so up and down because of it. Ferrero just has to weather the storm.

Oh, alright. It wasn't much, but Ferrero hit a silly dropshot (wasn't all that good), Agassi got it, then Ferrero hit a lob Agassi couldn't reach. It was the manner in which it was played. Ferrero played it so non-challantly, as if he was enjoying toying with Agassi. It cost him dearly, because Agassi simply will not take that. Everything turned around since then. It's not every day you lose your service game from 40-0 up.

Federer could possibly move to number two if he goes undefeated and wins the cup, right?

First, it really sucks to be living in Los Angeles right now. Anyone who's living here probably knows what I'm talking about  .

Anyway, just before my power went out (for an hour...just came back on) the scoreboard showed that Andre had just broken Juan Carlos and gone up 2-1 in the 3rd!! I cursed Juan Carlos!! I didn't take the chance to sign on till after the first set and look what happened  . The match is going to be on ESPN in about seven minutes but I thought I would post my frustration now.

Today was a BAD day in so many ways. But especially in Tennis terms. First, David gets bageled and goes 1-1 and now Juan Carlos goes 0-2 with no chance at ending #1 and letting Junior have it AND I'm guessing that the 2nd SF position will be decided between David and Andre :banghead:

GO RAINER!! GO DAVID!! GO GUILLE!!

Should be interesting to set a timer to see just how long it takes ATPTennis.com to update the fact that Roddick is now no. 1. Not long, methinks.

OH, but according to the ATP CEO they would never show favoritism in the ATP for those at the top  .

I don't think Roddick will stay #1 for long but it's just the fact that he ends 2003 as #1. It was already the all-Roddick Wimbledon here and with ESPN having 3 of the 4 Slams it's not looking good for those of us who like other players (Americans or not) :p .

Now waiting for college football to end to see how in the heck Juan Carlos lost it!! :fiery:

yup, if jcf messes this up roddick will be number "1" (altho federer deserves it more)

I have to agree with that. As much as that match saddened me earlier and the quality was less than great I have to admit that Roger has definitely gone to Houston with a mission :D . He'll take that #1 from Roddick the first chance he gets, I have no doubt. I just wish that Juan Carlos had won tonight with a chance at #1 because, for most of the year, he played like the #1.

This whole day sucks!!

Well, ESPN is on. I guess I better prepare myself for screaming idiots

OK, so I just finished watching Juan Carlos lose (or Andre win depending on how one looks at it ;) ) and one thing above everything frustrates me. Juan Carlos played a good match!!!

It wasn't like he played badly in that third set to lose but, for some reason, he just couldn't play the big points like he needed to. I'm so frustrated!!

C'mon Rainer!! C'mon David!! C'mon Guille!!

Deboogle!.

aww give Andre some credit. He's 10 years older and was able to completely turn that match around. HE stepped it up and won, Juan Carlos didn't lose it (to his credit).

:o Oh, I didn't mean to insinuate that Juan Carlos lost it rather than Andre winning it. I was rooting for Juan Carlos so that's why I worded it the way I did but that's also why I'm so frustrated. I hate when this happens for any of my favorites in a match. They play this good or decent match and still lose :banghead: . I know it's all a part of the game and I enjoy almost every aspect (sans TV coverage...lol)...frustration and all :D .

This has to to be the first tournament where I haven't rooted for Andre even once. I wanted Roger to win in the first one (in order to play David but we all know how that turned out...lol) and then tonight I wanted Juan Carlos to win for 2 reasons:

1) To still have a chance at year-end #1
2) To have a chance at getting into the SFs

Needless to say Juan Carlos is going to be one ticked off man leaving Houston but hopefully he can use that to come back strong in 2004. At this point, I won't be surprised if he does skip the Aussie Open.
