Article from La Tercera, today :)

González: "We are optimistic and anxious for Friday"

"The bombardero de la Reina" assured that there are still some days left to arrive in the perfect conditions of the duel for the DC Tie against Slovakia, whereas Massu declared that their duel with Hrbaty will be the key.

The Chilean Team, in this morning press conference, showed its confidence regarding their match against the Slovakian team. In this occasion, the players and captain Hans Gildemeister agreed that the duel will be very complicated, but the good preparation that they have had gives them much optimism.

"Physically, I am a little tired, but there are three days left to adapt us well to the court. We are optimistic and anxious for Friday because we want to see medialuna full ", the bombardero de la Reina said.

On the other hand, Nicolas Massú assured that all the points will be important in this match, taking off a little the pressure of the duel against Dominik Hrbaty, considered as the main key. "the duel with Hrbaty is not a tactically important point because here, it is necessary to gain three points to remain with the qualification and obtaining it, is anyway important", he emphasized.

The captain of the team, Hans Gildemeister, assures that "the court is every time better" and in the beginning of the matches, he indicated that "it would be good that Fernando plays the first one, because the second single match is the weakest point of them and in addition is an extra pressure for Hrbaty.

09 Feb 2006 - Medialuna Monumental of Rancagua, Rancagua, CHI - Rodrigo Valdebenito

Gonzalez begins Chilean quest for quarterfinals
The draw has been made for the Chile v Slovak Republic tie in Rancagua and is as follows:

Order of Play

Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) v Michal Mertinak (SVK)
Nicolas Massu (CHI) v Dominik Hrbaty (SVK)
Fernando Gonzalez/Nicolas Massu (CHI) v Dominik Hrbaty/Michal Mertinak (SVK)
Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) v Dominik Hrbaty (SVK)
Nicolas Massu (CHI) v Michal Mertinak (SVK)

Fernando Gonzalez will begin his country’s quest for their first Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal spot since 1982. The hard-hitting Chilean will face Michal Mertinak in the first singles in Rancagua on Friday when the hosts take on last year’s finalist the Slovak Republic.

A mystery is solved

One of the key issues of the tie was whether Tibor Toth - acting as the Slovak captain in the absence of regular captain Miloslav Mecir, who could not fly due to a back injury -would use Michal Mertinak as the second singles player for Friday.

Mertinak only arrived on Tuesday afternoon in sunny Rancagua, where hot and dry weather and a slow clay court produce very different conditions from the indoor tournaments he has played in Europe. It was thought that perhaps Toth would choose Lukas Lacko, a rising young player, and reserve Mertinak for the doubles and the final singles, and the Slovak captain himself had not wanted to comment on the issue earlier. At the draw however the name of Mertinak appeared as second singles player for the Slovak Republic.

“I had my doubts (about the second Slovak singles player),” said Hans Gildemeister, the Chilean captain. “He (Mertinak) was playing indoors and now will have to face the heat. Fernando must take advantage of that match.”

Gonzalez had said earlier that it felt normal not to know for sure who he would play on Friday. “It happens all the time in the tour, so it’s no problem. We have to win, whoever we play against”.

Massú had similar feelings about having to play the second singles: “It’s the same. It has no importance whatsoever to play the first or the second match. You have to face the same opponent anyway on the same day”.

The Chilean team had a bit of trouble during their practise days. González has a sore shoulder, but it seems to be merely muscle fatigue. Massú, on the other hand, had to play the final of the Viña del Mar tournament on Sunday night, so he practised very lightly during Monday and Tuesday, increasing his workload on Wednesday.

Former favourites, current underdogs

The Slovak Republic reached the final of last year’s Davis Cup, but now the nation is clearly not the favourite against Chile, who play at home on their favorite surface, red clay. However Hrbaty, Mertinak and the rest of the team are ready for the challenge.

“I don’t know where the rumours came from” said Michal Mertinak. “I am physically fit for the tie, and will do my best against González. He is No. 15 in the world, playing at home on his favourite surface. A win over him would be a surprise, and I have nothing to lose.”

Dominik Hrbaty has faith in his team mate. “Michal has good tactics against González, so he can do a good job.” About Massú, his opponent for Friday, Hrbaty was very clear. “I know all about him and he knows all about me. It will be an interesting match”.

Poor Fena, he's clearly hurting, I mean, why s he be taken to 2 TBs by Mertinak? At least Fena is up 76(5) 76(3) and 20 the last time I checked the sb. But he better win this set now or he won't be in any shape to play another match this weekend.

Gonzalez delivers first point for Chile

Fernando Gonzalez defeated Michal Mertinak 76(5) 76(3) 63 in a closer match than many expected to give Chile the first point against 2005 Finalists the Slovak Republic in this Davis Cup by BNP Paribas first round tie.

The pre-match odds seemed stacked in Gonzalez’s favour. Gonzalez was opening the tie in his country and on his best surface, while Mertinak had to travel 14 hours on a plane to arrive last Tuesday, only three days before the tie, and had to suddenly adapt to summer temperatures and dry weather after some time at European indoor tournaments.

Moreover, it had been rumoured that Slovak captain Tibor Toth would pick young hopeful Lukas Lacko in order to let Mertinak increase his adaptation to the court and the climate.

Good performance from Mertinak

None of this happened. Actually, Mertinak not only was on the court in the first single, but also played extremely well, with an unusually high first serve percentage in the first two sets, while Gonzalez’s sore shoulder did not allow him to use his usual power serve.

The first set went to Gonzalez 7-5 on the tiebreak, but only after two breaks, one for each player. The second set was no different than the first; Mertinak continued with his high efficiency and Gonzalez had to struggle in order to hold his serve. Perhaps things could have been different if Mertinak had taken advantage of the many break points he had, three in the first set and four in the second, but he only clinched one of them. This led to another tiebreak, and another win for Gonzalez – this time 7-3.

Gonzalez came through in the end

The third set saw Gonzalez move up a gear, as the two-set lead gave him what he most needed: confidence. Mertinak, on the other hand, started to feel the pressure and looked tired; he dropped his serve once and let the home player take the set 63. The 10,000 crowd went wild, and the rest of the team (including guest and former world No. 1Marcelo Rios) celebrated the first point of the tie.

“To be with such a crowd is a wonderful feeling, it motivates you and helps you to overcome a good opponent,” Gonzalez said.
“(Mertinak) played well and had nothing to lose, so he went there and did his best”.

“My tennis was not so good today, and my shoulder feels a little tight, but I’m sure we’ll do fine”.

A quick clay court?

The court appeared to play quick for a clay court, while Gonzalez is known for preferring very slow courts.

“There is nothing we can do about that…. It’s summer, it’s warm, the court is quicker than I would prefer. But today I had to play at four in the afternoon, tomorrow we play at seven, and in that three hours the temperature drops and the court gets slower. I am confident in our victory.”

Mertinak looked very calm about his defeat: “Today I served very well, but it was not enough. The court was fine, I felt very comfortable.”

When asked about the doubles match, where they will face the 2004 Olympic Champions, Mertinak was philosophical.

“I don’t know, they are a good pairing. I will probably play with Hrbaty, and anyone can win.”

Now Olympic double gold medallist Nicolas Massu faces Dominik Hrbaty, in a battle of two men known for long matches and courageous victories.

Gonzalez and Massu book quarterfinal spot

Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu maintained their impressive Davis Cup doubles form as they recorded their fourth successive victory by defeating the Slovak team of Lukas Lacko and Michal Mertinak 62 75 36 64 in the third rubber of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie.

Chile now has an unassailable 3-0 lead against last year's runner-up the Slovak Republic and advances to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1982.

In April's quarterfinal, Chile will travel to the US or host Romania, depending on the outcome of the tie in La Jolla, CA, where USA leads 2-1 after the doubles rubber.
