GO GUILLE!

The weather is favorable to Coria, isn't it?
Surely Schuettler isn't used to play in these conditions in November...

Question: Now that we know Nalby is well, does Scud get to go back to surfing in Cali?

nope he has to stay there cos he will be needed when he has to play Nalbandian
Agassi will go home when he loses tomorrow.

Question: Now that we know Nalby is well, does Scud get to go back to surfing in Cali?
No. In order to win his 50K$$$ he must stay until the end of round-robin stage and be ready to replace any player.
And I highly doubt he'll go to Cali when his duty in Houston is over... there's Davis Cup Final in 2 weeks time, so he'll probably go straight to Melbourne!

What makes you sure that Agassi will quit?

Even if he loses tommorrow, he might still have chance to get to the semi, if Nalby lose to Fed-Ex.

Schuettler playing from on and inside the baseline and pushing Gui back.

Why did Rainer try a dropshot on Coria? LOL

star
11-11-2003, 06:21 PM
Gui is off today. His drop shot did not clear the net.

Deboogle!.
11-11-2003, 06:23 PM
yes... Mary says he is "crabby" - I love how she can make that judgement in 2 games

come on guille, wake up!

I think Rainer's hot orange shirt may be blinding him. Plus, we need to send a memo to Guille not to wear black.

TheBoiledEgg

Shittler is boring him to death

Deboogle!.

Shittler is boring him to death

LOL! I was just on the phone with my dad and told him to turn on the match to see the orange shirt and my dad was like "WHO is that?" and I said his name and my dad said "his name is shittler???" I immediately thought of you TBE :)

Sjengster
11-11-2003, 06:27 PM
That I didn't expect! Go Rainer! Since I have no doubt that the majority will be pro-Coria (including TBE, for some reason I can't BEGIN to figure out), I will be 100% behind Schuettler. Show 'em you deserve to be here just as much as the others!

Deboogle!.
11-11-2003, 06:27 PM
They keep making Houston look so pretty *gag*

I don't think it's quite as hot as they say it is... and it's definitely more humid that 56%. though, low 80s and humidity in the 60%s is not fun.

Deboogle!.
11-11-2003, 06:27 PM
Schuettler deserves to be there, for sure. I just like Coria :)

TheBoiledEgg
11-11-2003, 06:30 PM

I like Ranier lots. He's a minor fave. But Coria is my second favorite (right behind Guga) so I've got to pull for him.

Ranier deserves to be there. He is a very good steady player and he fights really well. He has a good tennis head. I like him about the same as I like Sjeng. I do think Ranier is prettier to watch than is Sjeng. :)

Is it just me or does anyone else see that Coria seems to be having trouble breathing?

Deboogle!.
11-11-2003, 06:43 PM
yea he does and Mary commented on it too. It's oppressive out, I'm not surprised. I had trouble breathing walking to class at 9 this morning so in the middle of the afternoon running around out there, I can't imagine how not fun it is.

Sorry but Schuettler looks good in a suit.

TheBoiledEgg
11-11-2003, 06:46 PM

Sjengster
11-11-2003, 06:48 PM
Ah well... this is certainly going to be a match of many breaks, neither of these two are power players. If Coria's just recovering from his cold, he may not like the humid conditions here, I suppose.

TheBoiledEgg

his record after losing 1st set is ........ 4-13
compared to 55-1 when he wins it

Sjengster
11-11-2003, 07:06 PM
Anyone here? 6-3 Schuettler, and I hope Coria isn't feeling too unwell since I'm looking forward to seeing him challenge Roddick. Come on Rainer, win it on your own terms!

dont get you
how do you like Rainer when you hate Kiefer
and Rainer is 10 times more boring
First of all, I'm not a Schüttler-fan but he's playing Coria so I root for him.
Second, yes his game can be quite boring. But at least he's not an arrogant ass like Kiefer and (often enough) Haas. He's working hard and it pays off. What he's talking makes sense most of the time. He seems to be a nice, down-to-earth guy. That's all.

Sjengster: yes, 100%.
But the thought of Kiefer making the Masters :haha:

TheBoiledEgg
11-11-2003, 07:19 PM
how did you expect Kiefer to act when after all Agassi is his dad, they share the same genes, and walk. ;)

Sjengster
11-11-2003, 07:19 PM
Didn't Wertheim or some other journalist observe that if you asked someone in German tennis six years ago who would be the first to reach a GS final out of Haas, Kiefer and Schuettler, he'd have given the wrong answer? That's what you've got to like about Schuettler, he has far less game but far superior mental toughness compared to his compatriots. He also has a winning record against both Haas and Kiefer, which ain't bad at all.

star
11-11-2003, 07:21 PM
Blech! Enough about Kiefer.

Gui!!!!!!!!!

Yea the whiny brat. Up 4-1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how did you expect Kiefer to act when after all Agassi is his dad, they share the same genes, and walk. ;)

Rainer mis-hits twice and wins the point  BP !

Deuce :(

star
11-11-2003, 07:27 PM
To be fair, I think Rainer's game went down a bit as well as Gui stepping up and hitting his shots. He's managed to do that nice thing of whipping the ball from corner to corner better this set.

He did just whak a short ball into the net tho. ;)

star
11-11-2003, 07:28 PM
He's playing more deeply and pushing Rainer off the baseline.

Rainer threw his racquet very hard that time. tsk tsk.

Sjengster
11-11-2003, 07:32 PM
Coria's first serve percentage is very low for him, only 57, he's usually at around 75 or 80. Doesn't exactly matter at the moment though.

Do you have that pale sky with wispy clouds? Or is it the white sky. That's my least favorite.

The sky cleared here after two days of cloudy weather. The snowline has crept down to about 7500 feet. The mountains look pretty.

Schuettler is not the male Pistolesi, LOL. That honour would go to someone like Mantilla or Massu, a real baseline grinder.

TennisLurker
11-11-2003, 08:58 PM
Mantilla has nice strokes at least.

TennisLurker
11-11-2003, 08:59 PM
Massu is a nightmare to watch he represents all that is wrong with tennis.

If I recall correctly Mantilla has a surprisingly good record against Sampras, something like 2-3 with none of the matches being won in straight sets.

Sjengster
11-11-2003, 09:01 PM
So does Pistolesi, they both have a beautiful one-handed backhand. But their matches can be sheer torture for both the opponent and the viewer, depending on who they're playing. I'd take Schuettler's efficiency over Mantilla's elegance anyday. It's Italian for scarf, isn't it? Found that out in Wertheim's mailbag today - perhaps that's why he did so well in front of the Italian crowd in Rome this year.

Glad we have a Massu consensus, that man can kill variety in a tennis match like no-one else.

Yes, he beat him in Rome last year in the first round, but also beat him at Indian Wells one year, if I recall correctly. He certainly has ability against an attacking player, but that's the key, it's all about match-ups - Schuettler would look a lot more interesting if he was playing against a netrusher and we'd get the contrast in styles, but him and Mantilla against fellow baseliners can produce some dull tennis.

Do you remember a match at the Us Open, Conchita Martinez vs Amanda Coetzer, it was probably the worst match up in history, Conchita throwing all those slow high balls, and Amanda running around the court retrieving the ball with no problem throwing the ball back to Conchita who would throw a slow high ball again and then Amanda would run and throw the ball back to Conchita...etc etc

Yeah. It was like tennis death.

But at least Conchita has lots of spins. Pistolesi just does the looping ball over and over and over.

11-11-2003, 09:46 PM
First of all, I'm not a Schüttler-fan but he's playing Coria so I root for him.
Second, yes his game can be quite boring. But at least he's not an arrogant ass like Kiefer and (often enough) Haas.

Maybe you have come across both Nicolas and Tommy at a different time in their careers but I have met and talked to both here in LA and nothing about them came across as arrogant. I was actually surprised at how nice and accessible they were.

I'm still trying to figure out how Nicolas's game can be labelled boring

Guille and Rainer added 10 years to my life today!! I couldn't root for either one 100% because then I would be rooting against the other :banghead: . I'm glad that it went three sets although it was definitely not the best three sets of Tennis. Guille was frustrating the heck out of me!! He couldn't seem to decide whether to put forth the energy to fight or not. I did forget about him being sick a couple weeks back with that high fever and all.

I didn't want either one of these guys to have an 0-1 at the beginning  . Now I don't know whether to go with Carlos or Junior tonight. I want Carlos to win BUT Rainer has an awesome record against Junior so I would like to see that match. But not really at the expense of Carlos going 0-1. I'm so damn confused!!

More power to you if you can stay away from the scoreboard. I can't and won't :D . Even though I watched Roger vs. Andre on the Internet they still made me nervous watching on TV...lol. I knew the result but, for some reason, the anticipation was still there.

There's a doubles match on court now, if you don't mind...
Llodra/Santoro won 1st set 6-3 against Damm/Suk, but trail 4-5 in the 2nd and serve to stay in the set...
Damm/Suk eliminated from the tournament, since they had to win in straight sets to have any chance of qualifying. If the Frenchmen win this set, they qualify.

LOL well to be fair, last night I Was quite busy. I had two meetings, the latter of which had a group of people in my room working til right about when the match started. I was starting to fall asleep at the end of set 2 and I knew I wouldn't last the whole 3rd set so I did look online at that point before going to sleep to find out who won. RED GROUP W-L Sets Games
1 Bryan/Bryan USA/USA 2-0 4-2 37-33
6 Llodra/Santoro FRA/FRA 2-1 5-3 44-42
3 Bjorkman/Woodbridge SWE/AUS 1-1 3-2 28-22
7 Damm/Suk CZE/CZE 0-3 1-6 33-45

If the Bryans lose, there's a 3-way-tie, and the Bryans will be only 3rd!

TheBoiledEgg
11-11-2003, 11:10 PM
if Jonas/Todd win by 2 sets to 1
all 3 will have 5-3 record
so it goes down to games

Bryans WILL still get in if they lose something like 6-7 6-0 6-7
