It's about bloody time they gave David a REAL chance to play a REAL DC match... imo, the former G3 or G4 or whatever they were called took far too long to incorporate new players into the team.

It will be a tough tie altho BLR is all about Max. I saw the BLR vs. CAN tie in Sep. in Toronto -- doubles only, which CAN won [Nestor is one of THE best dbles players I've seen ] and Max was playing well enough. It was his partner Voltchkov who was the liability AND he hasn't the best behaviour either...

Anyway, ESP s just play their best! ;)

As long as David y compania are healthy!

One thing that Emilio Sanchez said was that he wants to have a couple of doubles teams play for several tournaments to get used to playing dbles and to get used to playing as a team so that for DC they can choose whichever team is playing better. Another long overdue decision! ;)

It´s great that David gets to play Davis Cup and I wish him all the best for the tie in Belarus. :yeah: It was about time that he gets the chance to play a real match, although he will face Max (two of my faves have to battle it out against each other :bigcry: ). Well, at least one of them will definately reach the second round!

Hey, Sue! I suppose you only get the UK DC on TV? We don't get anything, as usual... so I have to just keep up w the Spanish papers, scoring threads, and the Armada forums... The UK aren't playing DC until the next round as we have a bye in the 1st round of our qualifying group - so we get Germany v France live on TV.

Brown rice -- and instant? AY! That's as good as a crime! The rice and the water are the most important ingredients in paella! It's almost impossible to re-create an authentice paella outside of the Valencia province. [I'm not making this up either -- I lived there and was taught how to make real paella by my Valencian landlady.] ;)

Besides, if TTC hadn't had to pick up the USA tie because ESPN wasn't then maybe we would have gotten ARG vs SWE or CHI vs SLO. :awww:

I was just speaking to my cousin who lives in Minsk and went to the tie yesterday. She said that David's match was actually good and more even than the score suggests - and there were lots of long rallies from the back of the court. She said David seemed very nervous though, and somewhat overawed by the occasion  and did not take his opportunities when they were presented - Voltchkov makes a lot of unforced errors in his game so there are always opportunities against him.

At the end of the match she saw David briefly and said he l looked really sad  - she wanted to talk to him as she's trying to collect photos and autographs for our 9-year-old niece who lives in another part of Belarus, but she decided it probably wasn't the right time, so didn't approach him. She said she spoke to Feli Lopez after the tie and he seemed fine and "upbeat" - so he must be confident of the doubles :) As for the other singles' match - she said that Mirnyi served at over 200 kph most of the tie, and poor Tommy did not stand a chance against him  Sorry this "report" is not to positive, but at least it's from someone who was actually there. Really hope Spain can turn it around.

:worship: Any and all news is much appreciated.

I did think Tommy did as well as he could. I had a gut feeling David's lack of DC matches was going to haunt him - it was like feeding him to the wolves by making him debut against a DC specialist far from home. The doubles score looked tight but the truth is the doubles are probably the Achilles heel of the Spanish DC team. It just seems that all the Spaniards play with a different countryman about every week in doubles on the ATP tour. There's a lot to be said for permanent partnerships: see Ancic/Ljubicic and Arthurs/Hanley got the job done today.

Anyone know if they will let Feli or Nando play the dead rubbers?

Well according to Olga, David was not too sad after the match. She said he seemed very "subdued" on court and immediately afterwards, - but then when the tie was over, both teams got together for some kind of party to celebate the birthday of one of the organisers at the event. They were all together in the restaurant at the venue, and they all sang "Happy Birthday" to this guy, and Verdasco joked about "getting their revenge" against the Belarussians when they next play them at home in Spain :)

21 Sep 2006 - Real Sociedad de Tenis la Magdalena, Santander, Spain - Eleanor Preston

Robredo and Nadal take on ItalySpain's Tommy Robredo will open up his nation's Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-off tie against Italy against Filippo Volandri on Friday. World No. 2 Rafael Nadal will follow against Andreas Seppi. The 2004 Davis Cup Champions Spain are looking to retain their World Group status while Italy is seeking a place amongst the world's elite for the first time since 2000.

The draw is as follows:

Tommy Robredo (ESP) v Filippo Volandri (ITA)
Rafael Nadal (ESP) v Andreas Seppi (ITA)
Tommy Robredo/Fernando Verdasco (ESP) v Daniele Bracciali/Giorgio Galimberti (ITA)
Rafael Nadal (ESP) v Filippo Volandri (ITA)
Tommy Robredo (ESP) v Andreas Seppi (ITA)

 why isn't David playing??? Personally I would have put him in the doubles with Fer......at least they played together.... Can't remember if Verdasco/Robredo ever did.... weird this....

Well it did! 17-15  Wow!! Even though I am a professed DC hater - I enjoyed that match - purely because it was a great, tense, close match - nothing to do with the fact it was Russia/USA. And I'm undoubtedbly going to upset loads of people here now :o but if I was forced to make a choice in this DC Final it would be Russia all the way - I just don't want Argentina to win it - sorry  Oh - and good luck to David in his match!

And I know they will put down a quick court Isa - but the Argentines aren't that bad on faster surfaces. I was actually in Moscow when Russia played Argentina in 2002 DC, and went to that famous, marathon doubles match - and as I recall Russia only won that tie 3-2 so it won't be a walkover.

Yes - Kolya wasn't even watching - I believe he has some stomach bug or something - they reckon he was just totally exhausted from doing so well in the US Open, then flying straight to China, and it all caught up with him  And evidently Youzhny told Tarpischev that he would play, but that he felt a little jaded and "off colour" himself (maybe a bug going around?) and Dima stepped up to the task valiantly!

Believe me this hurts me to say but I would sooner have been watching Lubby Lou than driving home from works

Anyway on a much pleasanter note this is from the main Davis Cup page about our boy :D

Ferrer makes it 1-1 after day one

David Ferrer has equalized for Spain in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas first round tie against Switzerland in Geneva. The number two Spanard had no trouble in beating rookie Stephane Bohli 63 62 62.

The end of the match was symptomatic: Ferrer served, Bohli prepared for a two-handed backhand but the ball landed on the line producing a tricky bounce resulting in Bohli missing the ball. After one hour and 46 minutes Ferrer, who won the Auckland title earlier this year, had done the job he set out to do.

44 unforced errors from Bohli

The 24-year-old baseliner was the better player throughout the match: He converted six of 14 break points and only conceded his own serve once. In the end, the statistics proved the Spaniards' supremacy. He prevailed with 94 to 67 points, 44 of them being unforced errors by Bohli.

Ferrer was very happy about his first win in a live Davis Cup rubber, "I played my game, point by point and did it very well. I am also happy that I handled the pressure well."

Geneva-born Bohli, who previously had only played (and lost) two matches on the ATP tour, tried to mix up his game as much as possible, but was not up to the task. "I was way too nervous. I am sorry that I couldn't give the unbelievable crowd more to cheer form," said Bohli after the match. "It has been a very good apprenticeship for me. If I play again on Sunday, I will be a completely different player."

In the middle of the third set, there was a moment of shock in the Palexpo Arena. Bohli fell and needed treatment. Fortunately, the bad luck that seems to have settled in Geneva with both number one players, Stanislas Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal, out with injuries, didn't cause any further trouble. "It was just a nervous cramp", Bohli said.

Visiting Spain remain the favourites

Although the best-ranked players of the teams prevailed in both reverse singles, the result after day one gives more hopes to the Swiss than they had expected after the injury of Wawrinka, who underwent successful surgery on Friday morning. The visitors remain the favourites however, whether Nadal will play in the doubles and/or Sunday's singles or not. "I think, we can win the tie with him or without him", Ferrer said.

After the conclusion of yesterday's matches, Nadal went back to the hospital to have further tests. Captain Emilio Sanchez won't force anything. "We will have the results later but he will only play if he is healthy. For the doubles, we don't plan to make any changes for now, said Sanchez."

Switzerland had entered the tie as major outsiders after Wawrinka’s injury and many people expected a clean sweep for the visitors. Therefore, the score after day one gives reason to a certain optimism, as captain Severin Lüthi pointed out "Definitely, I would have signed for a 1-1 on Thursday night. We are on schedule now and try to prepare the doubles as well as we can."

Hola chicas :wavey:

I'm back from Geneva :)
I was very lucky for the DC, i was next to the players seats  so i could take some funny videos of the spanish team together ;)
As i expected my pics are crappy but i have some nice videos, i will put them here tomorrow ;)

To summarize what i saw, i could see the whole practice of the spanish team on saturday. David practiced against the double team Verdasco/Feli for around 45minutes. I had a ":wavey:" from Javier, who seemed suprised to see me there  but i confess it was nice to see he remembered me :) i took 2 good pics of Javier for Rosie :secret:
It was funny to see how Rafa and David seemed to be good friends, i noticed that during the double match, Rafa spent a lot of time sitting down on the ground between David's legs! So cute! :inlove:
For today's match, i don't know what to say... It started weirdly, but David won the first set, after that, he served even very worst and became angry.. and you know the result. I guess it's hard for him to play without motivation..

I'm sorry, i'm too tired to explain you better. Pics & videos tomorrow ;)

I think Fer would be the best choice if Fernando could play a complete match at the level he plays some points. But Fer being Fer he plays two brilliant points to every 5 out of controle points. Hi,

I've tried to find out but I'm watching the tie on SKY at the moment and they've picked Verdasco over Ferrer. As far as i'm aware he hasn't any injuries i've also checked his Davis cup record which isn't bad and certainly no worse than verdasco - so I really don't get it.

Can anyone take the time out to let me know.

Thanks

Ali, I've booked my hotel. We are in the Holiday Inn closest to RG. So I guess we'll be taking the metro to Bercy.

Danton, none of us here is exactly sure why Verdasco got chosen over Ferrer. Ferrer, according to his official website is in ok shape, so no worries about that. I think the coach probably has decided to give Verdasco a try because he might think it's a better match up. Really don't understand it either.

I took a little detour in Virginia, I went through 3 tolls, 2 tunnels, and 4 states to get here.

I got a free megaphone when I came in that says United States Davis Cup Team on it but I was using it to cheer on Nando. :p

For some reason the Internet doesn't work in my room but does in the lobby of the hotel.

Hasta luego. :wavey:

Hola Isa!:wavey:

Sounds like you are having a good time despite the Spanish performance. Could you please tackle the Bryans? I know you like them but Feli and Nando need all the help they can get. If it was a shopping competition we all know who would win but since it's tennis......

I read this on cooperativa.cl, a site in Chile, but I'm watching the doubles on TV, and no one is mentioning it. In fact, they just said on TV that Ferrer didn't play most likely because he was having problems with the very fast surface in Winston-Salem.

(EFE)

Feli & Fer lost in a 4th set tie-break  Feli was very good all the way thru but I'm afraid Fer was a bit hot & cold :( But the last 2 sets were very entertaining & the boys were a little unlucky not to force it into a 5th set.

:secret: They showed David & Tommy at the start of the 3rd set  the commentators said something about them having a look of resignation then all of a sudden David said something which made Tommy smile & the look David gave him back was :hearts: then he lifted his shirt up  My boy thou ruined the moment by asking if David was wearing eyeliner :fiery:

He lifted his own shirt up  but that was the last we saw of them. Tommy had a very wicked look on his face :hearts: but it was the look David gave him back  I do have the match on tape - I recorded it my mum - but I'm going to talk to my friend to see if she'd copy it onto disc for me :D
