Roddick steps up as main foil

By Jake Niall, The Age
January 12, 2006

SUDDENLY, the Australian Open needs Andy Roddick, who will enter the tournament as the second seed behind Roger Federer, a position akin to carrying saddle cloth No.2 alongside Phar Lap.

The untimely withdrawals of Rafael Nadal, who would have been the glamorous upstart second seed, and Marat Safin, hitherto the designated joker in the pack, deprives the men's draw of quality and charisma, and Federer of his most obvious and proven threats.

Roddick has not troubled Federer greatly of late, though this could also be said of Lleyton Hewitt and, indeed, the whole men's tour. But he is highly seeded — and greatly needed — nonetheless, because there are few other recognisable and still potent brands among the men.

Roddick knows where he stands, which is immediately after the daylight that follows Federer. He, quite rightly, and with some modesty, sees himself as one of the rest, a mortal scrapping it out for the right to challenge the supernatural.

"Well, he's made it like that," Roddick said of the Federer hegemony. "It might be Roger versus the field but for the rest of us, it's us versus our first-round opponent. He's obviously made it like that by playing so well over the last couple of years but … I can't stress enough that that really doesn't have a whole lot to do with any of us until we're put in the situation where we're facing him."

Roddick might have talked up Federer's loss yesterday as an encouraging sign for he and his fellow scrappers but he is too astute for that. "This is a tune-up week, this is an exhibition week, and everybody is trying to find their form and make sure that we are ready to go next week. I wouldn't read too much into it," he said of Federer's defeat.

It's to Roddick's advantage that, as the prospective second seed, he would not have to face Federer until the final — a stage he's yet to reach at Melbourne Park, having twice been done in the semis, including last year, when he succumbed to Hewitt's bulldog intensity.

On paper, his chances would appear to have been substantially boosted, too, by the withdrawals, as the betting suggests. Did he see an opening? "I don't know if I think like that," he said yesterday after a sound 6-2, 6-2 victory over emerging French youngster Gael Monfils at Kooyong.

"I don't try to base my prospects for a tournament upon other people pulling out or not pulling out. Obviously, it opens the door for a lot of the other guys but the way I see it is you're going to have to beat the players that are playing best regardless, and I try not to think too much about stuff that's completely out of my control."

Roddick did allow that he was well-prepared for this Australian Open. The back that had troubled him late in the year was "fine", and this had enabled him to work to a Melbourne-specific "game-plan".

Roddick also is playing his customary role as torchbearer for American men's tennis, a job he has to himself this year following the non-appearance of the great Andre Agassi. Less familiar is the sense that Roddick, at 23 and with the likes of Nadal, Monfils and the other French wunderkind, Richard Gasquet, on the scene (and in Nadal's case winning French Opens), has become an elder statesman.

"This is kind of becoming commonplace," Roddick said of questions about the teenage Euro-guns. "I started getting asked about the younger generation and I guess someone forgot to send me the notice that said that I was old."

Little more than two years ago, the A-Rod was voted America's "sexiest athlete alive" by People magazine, garnering him space in the glossy pages occupied by the likes of of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Roddick now takes a slightly lower profile since his celebrity peaked two or so years ago, when he graced magazine covers and hosted TV shows.

But next week, in the absence of a hip young Spanish tyro and a brooding Russian, not to mention Agassi, he's the required rock 'n' roll foil to the Federer concerto.

Yea, I know and there is usually pirated tv online and stuff, aswell our own scoreing threads here at MTF. I don't ever stay up for the matches though, I usually go to sleep and check the results/then watch the tape the next day, unless it's the semis or finals.

Sharapova and Roddick love match?
Luke Dennehy
13jan06

MARIA Sharapova and Andy Roddick could have more in common than just tennis.

The glamorous Russian spent two hours watching Roddick play poker at Crown casino on Wednesday night, before they left together, sources said.

Reports the two were a couple first surfaced at the US Open last year, when he turned up unexpectedly to the launch of her fragrance.

Sharapova, 18, was at Crown not to play poker, but to keenly watch Roddick, 23, who knows his way around a poker table.

Roddick has had high-profile girlfriends in the past, including Hollywood actor and singer Mandy Moore.

Sharapova has been linked with Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine, and always refuses to comment on her personal life.

At Crown yesterday Roddick was back on the poker tables, taking part in the Australian Poker Charity Cup.

He joined footballers such as Nathan Buckley, Peter Everitt, Anthony Rocca and Dermott Brereton in the tournament.

Sipping on a cafe latte, the tennis champ did well from the start.

Finishing a respectable third, Roddick finally fell to Lillian Frank's husband Richard after three hours of play.

Mr Frank chose the Royal Children's Hospital as the recipient of the $5000 winnings.

At 18, as well as becoming a Wimbledon champion, Sharapova has matured into a savvy businesswoman but tennis and health remain her top priority.

Her 2005 year was hampered by injury and at one stage Australian Open organisers were doubtful she would come.

Here we go again. Well rumor's can become reality too so it's not impossible and Andy probably thinks Maria's hot. I just don't see her being a good match up for Andy as they are both too high profile and on demand at the moment. Who knows, when they both or one of them retire? Or when Maria shrinks a bit...

I posted the article for laughs. It's all based on "sources" so it's not even stating it as fact. That, and the article has other facts wrong (as in, it fails to mention that Andy shoewd up at her perfume thing because HE IS ENDORSED BY THE SAME COMPANY and also that the rumors started way before then, at the ESPYs).

I think it's funny. And I don't think Andy would continually lie about it. I think if there was something there he'd say he had no comment or something, but instead he keeps flat-out denying it, as does she.

Of course him dating some random girl wasn't gonna garner the same amount of attention as Maria. I think he realizes it'd be pretty dumb to flat out lie about not dating her, people wil find out eventually and he'll look like an idiot, just like pregnant Brangelina looks now :p

But with Maria, he's flatout denied dating her and I've never seen her at one of his matches - the tv cameras would be ALL over that. The only times they ever come up are when the two of them are playing at the same tournament, so like, it's not like they're seen around Florida together or in Texas or wherever, they're only seen when they've got scheduled appearances at the same place in the same city  I mean, I don't actually care. he couldn't make easy passes vs. a decent qualifier/volleyer since 2002. He mustn't stay behind the baseline and then tank again. He looked lethargic at RCA/indoor hardcourts.
I can't believe he skipped Sydney/Doha.
Dent/Ginep won't let him get away with huge serves again.

Hey guys, Mats Wilander has weighed in with his thoughts on Australian Open favorites. PS Mats linked to my blog ;)

http://matswilander.com/?item=more-australian-open-favorites
More Australian Open Favorites

Talking about the other favorites - Rafael Nadal, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick. Unfortunately we will not be seeing Marat Safin at this years Australian Open. Of course David Nalbandian and Guillermo Coria are always very dangerous. I do think that Rafael Nadal is the player to watch out for, especially for Roger Federer. Nadal is in my eyes the only player who actually believes, not only that he can beat Roger Federer, but that he is not going to get beaten by anybody in the world. I don't think that he looks across the net enough to worry about Roger. I think Nadal is another one of those players who is going to improve everytime he steps on court, and that's really all it takes. Unfortunately Nadal has withdrawn from this years Australian Open, he's too young to withdraw, for whatever reason, from a Slam. I mean, you miss school because you hate it, but if I loved it, I could go. Ease up on the pace, please!

Lleyton Hewitt has a little bit to prove in Australia, eventhough last year he did reach the finals but lost to Marat Saffin in a pretty decent match. But then again Hewitt just got married and has become a father, so who knows what that has done to his mental strength. It could have helped him, or he could have realised there are other things more important than beating Roger Federer. Hopefully he can deal with that situation, and hopefully he can make the Australians proud and capture the title which hasn't been done by an Australian since Mark Edmunsun did it, way before my time!

Andy Roddick is the top player that has the most to prove, he needs to really step it up this year to be a threat. Last year was not a very solid year for Andy, although he did have some good showings in the Grand Slams, especially Wimbledon. But I think Andy will have probably worked on trying to change his game a little bit this year and it will be very exciting to see what Andy can come up with in Australia.

Other players to watch out for on the mens side at this years Australian Open, certainly has to be Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, who had a big win at the Paris Indoors Master series. Also Ivan Ljubicic, who Tomas beat in the finals in Paris. Ljubicic made the finals of Madrid as well, where he lost in a close five setter to hometown favorite Rafael Nadal. Ivan Ljubicic, of course, together with Mario Ancic are coming off the greatest sports effort in Croatian history by winning the Davis Cup Final in Slovakia, against Slovakia. Certainly Ljubicic has the game to upset any player. Mario Ancic I think is also a player to watch, he is also slowly improving every time he steps on court, and he is a very, very hard worker. It should be very exciting to see how these three players do in the Australian Open.

Not to forget the two young Frenchman, Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils. Young, upcoming players, really talented, and extremely dangerous competitors for any player, including Roger Federer. So look out for them not only at this tournament, but for the 2006 season. French people are really expecting them to break into the top ten any year now, I personally believe this year is a year up for grabs, maybe not the number one spot, but certainly any spot after that. I'm not sure the likes of Berdych, Gasquet, Moufils... Nadal... maybe even Andy Murray have that much respect for Roger. Sampras and Aggassi sure didn't have that much respect for me the year after I won 3 slams in one year. Tiger Woods dominated golf for about two years, Rogers time may be up. It looked like Tiger was going to win every major for the next ten years, and it could be the same for Roger Federer.....

Hello :wavey:

I want to bring to your attention the existence of Pick-Your-Winner [PYW]. This game is a popularity contest in which you can vote for your favourite players. Every tournament we start with the actual draw (or qualifying draw) and every match is won by the most popular player, using real-life scorelines.

Because your favourite will also play in some tournaments, I thought you might want to vote! If you want to vote (it's fun!), check the Tournament Forums for current matches and keep checking

Ryan's AO Andy preview

Andy definitly got the tougher draw this year. Although Andy will miss Hewitt in his side of the draw many threats await Andy that could be just as dangerous.

As soon as the third round Andy may have to play Taylor Dent. Taylor is certainly a threat and looks in good form after his recent win at the Hopman cup. This match will be a confidence builder for Andy as he looks to improve his already stellar record against Dent/all the other b squad americans.

Did I say B-squad americans? Enter Robby Genepri in the fourth round, Robby has made a strong case recently to be considered on the A list of Americans (along with James Blake), Robby can get my vote for the A-list if he can beat Andy on the big stage, in the 4th round of the AO. That is to say of course Robby can get past big serving metro-sexual Thomas Johannson. If Robby falls to ToJo it would setup a wimbledon semi-final rematch in the 4th round. Yowza!

In the quarters it could be "a who's who" of big hitters. Andy could run into Ivan Lube-a-dick. Ivan has won the last two against Andy and it could very well be three wins for Ivan unless this new agressive minded Andy shows up to save the day. I did say "a who's who" right? Well, that's because the other player that could come through to the quarters is Thomas Berdych. Thomas is hot after his recent master series win. Berdman has all the shots in the book, he also has as many wins over Federer as Roddick does(that would be 1...haha). BIG BIG Yowza!!

In the semis we are looking at Daveed. Can you say USO semi final 2003? I remember that match very well and lets just hope Andy doesn't want to wait two sets to start playing tennis. Daveed is out shape, but, after his recent master's cup win, he will be near unstopable if he makes the semi-finals. Andy will have to be serving lights out and smoking forehands to stand a chance against an inform Daveed. If Daveed doesn't make it through, I am looking for James Blake in the semi against Andy. Blake has never posted a win over Andy in 8 tries but, if he makes the semi-finals I don't think James can be take lightly. Andy will still have to serve lights out and smoke forehands just the same to beat James.

Nice review!

I'm still having problems thinking that Taylor poses any type of threat to Andy. Maybe Robby, but not Taylor. There's a huge difference between the opponents Taylor faced during the Hopman Cup and trying to challenge Andy. Robby's a question mark because you never know which Robby will show up - the hard working Robby or the content to be average Robby. But again, imho even a hard working Robby will have his problems against Andy.

I for one would love to see a SFs matchup with Andy and Nalby. That was a fun match at the US Open (though when I think about it, I am still shocked that David couldn't get it done after winning the first 2 sets). And David is always out of shape so that is never really a factor - he still manages to get it done. His problem has always been lack of focus and the will to fight. If both make it that far, it will definitely be a dog fight.

I really want Andy in the finals. Its my big hope for this year's Oz Open.

And I want someone - anyone! - to take out Roger before the finals (haven't looked close enough at Roger's draw to see who if anyone is capable in his half to take him out.) I don't want to see another Andy-Roger finals matchup. I tired of seeing our boy lose to Roger. Though Roger didn't look great in Shanghai - well not great for Roger. Don't know if its the injury problem - I try to ignore Roger as much as possible! But will have to start paying attention again.

The thing with Robby is that I cannot imagine Andy letting lightning strike twice. He shoudn't have lost to him in Indy last summer and I expect it really pissed him off, he hadnt lost to one of the other young Americans in over 2 years before then and I imagine he would just be extra focused to not let it happen again.

Andy was tired and irritable then, and not in the best frame of mind. Everything was bothering him, and he let himself get distracted. I thought then that if Andy had been at his best, Robby never would have won that match. Could be wrong.. ;) ... been that's what I think for what its worth.

I always wondered if Robby's summer success would have changed if he had lost to Andy that day. If he would have continued on playing well, or maybe he might have gotten a little discouraged. We'll never know. ;)

I don't think he would've had quite the same summer after that. If you look at his history with Andy, it was total, complete, and utter ownership, all the way back to the juniors. Beating a guy like that I think is definitely a contributing factor to what he did after that. There are other factors too, of course;)

About Andy's draw, I'll be pretty disappointed if he doesn't make at least the semis.

Unless we have a miracle, Roger's going to be in the finals.

Final...Fed. If he makes it this far, I will blab about what he needs to do.
I like the preview Ryan. I'm looking forward to watching Andy play.

With all these guys out with injuries, that is definitely the most important. Kind of scary these days seeing guys playing great, then get injured and never quite able to come back to their old form. Wasn't like that when I first started watching tennis - seems just like the last few years.

As per Roger, I think he's not playing really great and he make suprise some people with an early lost or early struggling.

Yea, I also remember that players run on momentum. Those players that are great find momentum and never let it go. Definitly losing some matches before a big tournement is a bad idea. Some players like Andre and Marat just show up and play their best no matter what. Federer to me has looked rusty ever since hard court season where I think he didn't even play his best to win the USO. My hope is that other players (like Haas did) can smell this weakness and beat him. :)

Definitely agree. Roger didn't play most of the summer after Wimbledon, was lucky that Andy and Rafa got knocked out early at the US Open, and really only played in Bangkok in the Fall until Shanghai. Ivan almost beat him, and David did.

A player can't be at his best if he's not playing.

Which is why its such a shame that Marat and Rafa are out. If you had Roger, Andy, Marat, Rafa, and Lleyton, we could have had a great close Australian Open. Last year even with Roger at his best, Marat beat him.

Roddick ready to redeem himself
By Joe Fleming, USA TODAY

Andy Roddick won five tournaments in 2005. He closed the year strongly, helping keep the USA in the elite group in Davis Cup in September and claiming a tournament victory in Lyon, France, in October. And he's No. 3 in the world.

http://images.usatoday.com/sports/tennis/_photos/2006-01-12-in-andy.jpg
After getting some time off to rest at the end of 2005, Andy Roddick is ready to show off his improved game this season.

Those successes, however, are lost in the glare of his high-profile, first-round exit at the U.S. Open in September, the tournament he won in 2003 and the only Grand Slam title on his résumé. So Roddick, 23, enters the 2006 season, he says, "with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder."

"It gave me something to prove, which is nice. Who knows, maybe it was a blessing in disguise," he says.

Another blessing in disguise, according to Dean Goldfine, Roddick's coach, was a late-season injury that knocked Roddick out of the season-closing Masters Series Cup in Shanghai in November.

"Because he didn't go down there, that was two extra weeks he was able to spend at home and actually rest a little bit and get his body healthy," Goldfine says. "Right now he's in amazing shape, and he's moving so well out on the court. And I think that's one of the things he's going to have to do to get back to where he wants to be, which is No. 1 in the world."

Roddick has been there before. He closed the 2003 season at No. 1, the first of three consecutive years in the top three. But he's dropped a spot each year since.

And the challenge of getting back is formidable. Firmly entrenched at the top is Switzerland's Roger Federer, who took over from Roddick early in 2004 and now is in his 102nd consecutive week at No. 1. Federer has been the biggest obstacle between Roddick and that elusive second Grand Slam title.

Roddick is 1-10 against Federer, including three losses in a row at Wimbledon, in the semifinals in 2003 and the final in 2004 and 2005. "Of course I would have loved to have won more Grand Slams," Roddick says. "But you have to give credit where credit's due.

"I was putting pressure on him every point," Roddick says of the 2005 Wimbledon final. "He's just come up with the goods."

Absences — world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, defending champion Marat Safin and four-time champ Andre Agassi — clear some obstacles from Roddick's road. But crowd favorite Lleyton Hewitt is in the field, and Federer could loom in the final if Roddick gets that far.

"Roddick is already feeling the heat because he took a step back this last year," says TV commentator John McEnroe. "There's no doubt that if (Federer) plays up to his capability, he's going to win it."

Roddick's game is based on power, a big forehand and a booming serve, and that won't change. But Roddick and Goldfine have been making refinements, strategic and technical.

"His backhand is much improved ... as well as his transition game and his volleys," Goldfine says. "He's getting to a point now where he's very comfortable up at the net. And now it's just getting the confidence to be able to do it in big matches."

Goldfine expects Roddick's biggest weapon, a serve that has been recorded at a record 155 mph, to be stronger than ever.

http://tinypic.com/k4cwhv.jpg

"Besides the huge first serve, he's actually improved his service games," Goldfine says. "Last year, he finished sixth in first-serve percentage, which is unheard-of for a guy with that big a serve. Andy did a much better job of mixing his first serve, not always trying to hit the 140 or 150 mph serve. He can do so much with it, in terms of the kick serve, moving it around a little bit more. ... It's going to help him get a higher percentage of first serves in, and it's going to be tougher for guys to break him."

Roddick knows the pressure will be on, as it always is for the top American. Even so, he's ready to get his season going. "I'm really looking forward to this year ... probably more so than any other point in my career," Roddick says.
