Fed defeats Monfils 6-3,7-6(5) for 1st title in 2006

Fed was completely taken aback by Monfils's pounding groundstrokes of both wings and his retrieval ability so he slowed down the pace of the game from time to time. Like Hewitt, Gael was at sea against the sliced return from time to time and Fed took advantage of it. All in all, a very close match and Fed's experience and strategic thinking got him the win.

Gael should be proud of himself for pushing Fed like this.

Congrats Roger!
An intesting match and contrary to what some people thought here, Gael has not been schooled or killed by Fed.

I don't know about that - except for the first few games in the 2nd set, Monfils played quite well - using his powerful serve to his advantage and executing his groundstrokes really well.

In fact, he gave a good fight in the tie-break too.

Gael made Fed work and that was good for him. I expected Fed to win but hoped it would go three sets.

I didn't see the second set but from what I saw of the first set I am not surprised it went to a breaker. Gael was pounding those groundstrokes and moving exceptionally well retrieving Federer's best shots.

However in fairness Roger did raise his level when he needed to and mixed up the pace hitting deep penetrating shots and then short slices drawing Monfils in and that is the correct way to play him.

Congratulations Fed. :) :woohoo: It was an interesting and a strong match indeed,
Federer used a good tactic to slow down the rythm of the match from some time to another, and coming to the net at the right time. A good beginning :)

Gael was by all means a strong competitor, his fans should be proud of him..go on Gael :yeah:

Even though Gael played well, I have doubts about him pushing Fed the next time they meet. He has a better serve than Nadal and he moves equally well but hits his groundies much flatter than Nadal and Fed is eventually able to handle the pace of the serve and the groundies as he did in the finals of USO 2005. Unless Gael is able add some more dimension to his game like volleying, slicing or more topspin, I don't see Fed having a tough time from now on.

Don't worry Gael you will get him another time..........Good start to this year:yeah: Though a win against Top Players is lacking and wanted by many :bounce: He pushed Hewitt and Federer and played a decent match against Andy, was physically done when he lost to Ljubo but he will continue progressing and will soon be in the top 10 :)

Federer always struggles against the young players whom he has not played before. Next time, Roger will smash Monfils more easily. :)

Concrats for your first Title in the new Year. You had to fight harder than many thought. But Monfils had something against a slaughter. But next time please don't allow this soooo long backhand rallies... ;)
