Indeed! Would normally mean an open road for Mayer, if he wasn't 6-7 3-3 down vs Nieminen  Btw, liveticker anyone? Couldn't spot one on the homepage

Robredo and Ancic out, finals schedule changed
January 4, 2006

Adelaide, January 4 - Third seed Tommy Robredo and fourth seed Mario Ancic are the first two major casualties of the Next Generation Adelaide International after falling in the second round today.

Robredo went down to Frenchman Florent Serra, while Ancic was victim of Xavier Malisse’s hard hitting game.

Robredo served for the opener at 5-4 but was broken to love before the set was decided in a tiebreak which went Serra’s way. Robredo found his length in the second set but was again on the back foot early in the decider. Serra sealed the win with an impressive shot down the line on his first match point.

Robredo fell earlier than expected.

The unseeded Frenchman said he hoped this kind of form would continue throughout the new season.

"It was a very good victory for me," he said "I was very happy to play a player in the top 20, a player like Tommy on Centre Court. I’m very happy to be here and happy with my game. My backhand and forehand from the baseline felt good.

"Before Roland Garros I would like to be around 30 or 35, but it won’t be easy."

Ancic looked on track to register a straightforward win after breaking Malisse to take the first set 6-3. Malisse quickly found form claiming the first four games of the second to level proceeding one set apiece.

In the decider both players traded breaks but it was Malisse who got the edge in a long tiebreak for a 3-6 6-3 7-6(8) victory.

Xavier Malisse is through to the last eight.

The order of play for finals day – Sunday 8 January – has been changed with the doubles final scheduled to take place before the singles. In a great announcement for fans, the doubles final will get under way at 1.30pm with the singles final to follow immediately after.

Because the length of the match can be reasonably predicted under the new doubles format, being used for the first time on the ATP Tour this year, tournament directors were able to reschedule the doubles final.

Fans will have the chance to warm-up to the singles final with an exciting brand of tennis in the doubles under the new rules. The first two sets are played to six with a tiebreak if it’s locked at six all. If the scores are level at one set each a first to ten match tiebreak will take place. There will also be no ad games – at deuce the receiving team will choose which player shall receive the serve, and the winner of that point shall win the game.

With the decision to play doubles before the singles more fans are expected for much of the doubles, while it also allows the tournament to finish on a high with its marquee match.

Please note: in the event that a player is playing in both the singles and the doubles finals the schedule will have to return to a singles final before the doubles.
