Don't say "americans" when you only reffer to players from the USA. A brazilian, an argentinian, a canadien and a mexican are also from America. Speak correctly.

Deboogle!.
10-15-2003, 03:14 PM
This is not an appropriate place for such an esoteric discussion but whatever. I'm an AMERICAN. 5 AMERICAN players got through to the third round. Whether you are using that word to refer to those from the USA or those from North, Central, and South America, it doesn't change that 5 Americans are still in the third round LOL. I didn't say "only 5." I wasn't excluding players from South America or Canada or wherever. I know plenty of people from Latin America and they do not refer to themselves as Americans. But maybe it's only the people I know.

*starts singing* I'm Proud to be an Americaannnnnn!

GO PARADORN! GO BJORKMAN! (There does it make you happy that I'm cheering for a Thai and a Swede?)

That's cool, no one has to be a fan of anyone they don't want. But I (and everyone else I know) have been calling myself and other people from the USA 'Americans' my whole life and I'm sure not gonna stop b/c someone doesn't like it LOL

Common Paradorn! Close it out in 2!

I don't think the use of "American" for "USian" really confuses anyone. Brazilians, Canadians, and Mexicans I know don't refer to themselves as American. Maybe the word has been ufairly co-opted, but I don't think using the word on a message board is going to stop,... say for instance the BBC which reported this morning about the American resolution in the U.N. I write them and write them and try to get "USian" into common usage, but futilely. Really, we should have given ourselves a better name. :)

Anyway, I like some Americans and don't like others, but I tend to favor those SOUTH Americans. :)

I refuse to cheer for Ginepri and Gambil regardless of nationality.

BUT :woohoo: Jonas

I cheer for any old Swede at all. :)

LMAO Yes exactly. I usually will root for a "USian" over anyone else, but if the other person is someone I really like then of course it wouldn't matter to me. Like, I'd never root for the Williams sisters, but that's a different story altogether now.

Anyway..... I'll second this - go Jonas!

:D star! cos acc to the Spanish commentary they said that Rogi seems to be half asleep during Alex's games!!

VAMOS ROGI!!!

5-2!!

Must be a good match though... I wish I could see it!

Re: that "Americans" stuff... I agree w whoever said it is not the time for such esoteric debate... nah we don't call ourselves Americans -- it w be an insult! I doubt the Sud Americanos call themselves Americanos... more like Chilenos, Argentinos, Peruanos, Ecuatorianos, Brasileiros[sp?], etc.

now 5-3! [after blabbing about nothing...]

I watched the match
Alex played pretty awful and Roger was really playing as if it was a practice match. Never in any trouble at all. Whenever Federer was in a tiny bit of trouble or needed to break he would just go into another gear and blow Corretja away

Scotso, don't worry bout Rainer. He is just really worn out and needs a break. Losing early here I think is fine for him so he can be fit for Paris in two weeks.

WTF? Schalken losing to Gambill on indoor carpet?! Mirnyi losing the first set with a triple break of his serve?! Schuettler dumped out in his opening match? (OK, that's hardly a surprise, but still... of course he would have played El Aynaoui in the next round, so he'd be a goner there anyway considering their head to head).

Yea livescore isn't great, but if the Madrid scoreboard is down (or essentially, as they don't update well), it's better. Like before, the Madrid site showed Ferrero down a break at 2-3 and livescore.com had him already having won the first set... so it can be better sometimes :)

10-15-2003, 07:59 PM
where are you looking at that match? How do you know his foot is hurting?

Well, Ferrero had pulled out of Vienna due to a "serious heel injury" so maybe it's not 100% better yet.

Goonergal
10-15-2003, 08:00 PM
JCF called the trainer at 2-5 down. He had some strapping on his ankle. I think he just wanted to take the strapping off, I didn't see any treatment.

Well, Gaudio is serving for the match now, something I never would have predicted after the drubbing he received from Moya in the Davis Cup - but then, this being Gaudio and all, I ain't saying anything for certain until this service game is over...

Sjengster
10-15-2003, 09:07 PM
Well, erm, there's no easy way of putting this... Gaudio has done it AGAIN, my friends. It's now 5-5, and while I find myself speechless with mirth at another choke on his part, I do actually want him to win. If both Moya and Ferrero scrape through... lucky beggars, is all I can say.

That's unbelievable!!! Moya saved a match point at 5-4 and he is winning now in the third 3-0! He is doing almost the same as Ferrero!!!

What a day for the best spaniards, and in Spain! It's amazing, simply amazing...

Dirk
10-15-2003, 09:35 PM
Go Moya. Finish Gaudio off and then win tomorrow. I want an Vienna rematch with Roger.

Sjengster
10-15-2003, 09:36 PM
Yep, and as I said on another site I don't think it's a coincidence that both Spaniards have come back from their opponents serving for the match and being matchpoint down with this raucous and partisan crowd support. But still, that was more of a factor in the Ferrero match - as expressed above, Gaudio's choking ability really defies belief. Plenty of people lose from being a set and a break up in the second and not being able to hang onto it, but he has to wait until the last possible moment to throw it all away and let his fans know that it ain't going to be his day. Quite ironic, after the way he came back against Nieminen.

Dirk
10-15-2003, 09:42 PM
5-2. Moya

Oh and does anyone think JC is fucked? I mean if he has ankle issues with his first match then how is he going to win tomorrow or go far? Andy has this number one ranking wrapped up for him. Shame on you Roger for giving that Montreal match away with your lazy competitiveness. :shout: :fiery:

10-15-2003, 09:50 PM
I don't think he has much of an ankle problem, does he? He had the injury time out to take off the wraping, not to put it on.

Andy is far far from having it all wrapped up. :)

Deboogle!.
10-15-2003, 09:51 PM
It didn't sound like Ferrero was actually hurt today. I didn't get to see it, but someone said the trainer was called to take OFF tape, not to fix something that was hurting. Maybe you can clear that up for us?

I know he had the heel problem or whatever to make him pull out of Vienna, but to me there seems no reason to think that Ferrero can't beat Mantilla (who has lost to Ferrero ALL SEVEN times they've played). These guys are all fighters or they wouldn't be where they are at such young ages - I wouldn't count anyone out prematurely.

Sjengster
10-15-2003, 09:53 PM
I'll say, that's unbelievably bad luck for Mantilla - there he was, thinking that Ferrero would lose and he might not have to play his nemesis in the next round, and there he is waiting for him once again. Since there is an unofficial rule that when these two play it must always go three sets (including in Grand Slams, hence this year's destruction at RG), I except another 7-6 in the third win for Ferrero where he looks physically out of it but comes back to win - not because of feigned injuries, I stress, but because that's the way all their matches pan out.

Deboogle!.
10-15-2003, 10:33 PM
