AdvertisementReigning Australian Open champion Marat Safin has been forced to withdraw from the Hopman Cup due to an ongoing knee injury.

Safin has been replaced by 20-year-old Teimuraz Gabashvili, who will now partner Svetlana Kuznetsova in the mixed teams event.

Due to the lateness of the withdrawal there will be no changes to the seedings or the draw.

Safin's withdrawal follows a longer than expected recuperation period for tendonitis of the right knee.

The Hopman Cup begins on Friday with the qualifying tie between China and the Netherlands.

But I really do hope he is okay, especially since the Aus. Open is coming up.

And who is this "Teimuraz Gabashvili"?

What a lacklustre tournament this Hopman Cup is shaping up to be on the men's side.

Their other 'star-attraction' is Gaston "Useless-Off-Clay" Gaudio, who, I'm sure, will put in his fullest amount of effort.

I have to agree... the level of play in the men's side of the tournament will probably be underwhelming. Too bad, this tournament was the first tournament I ever watched. What happened??? Before, they had Seles and Federer... and now this... sad.

It would be a miracle if Marat wins AO this time!!
:scratch:but who knows:shrug:,miracles are in favor of this guy ;)

Did Marat really have his surgery or is he trying to gut it out without it?

Not sure if he ever had the surgery, gave up trying to keep track of the quotes and counter-quotes. I have a very bad feeling that Marat is not going to play the Aus Open and that he and his team already know he is not going to play but they are just not ready to admit it yet. Shame he won't be able to defend his title.

Uhh once I called him the non-commercial version of Safin (I mean you get all classic by Safin except of the looks - however now they have the similar hairstyle). They even both practised in Spain ;). Gaba also used to be a soldier playing for CSKA Moscow (2 years).
He needs to improve tennis skills to be like Safin, but he's born in 1985 - in Tbilisi (Georgia). He plays Doha challenger this week (including double events together with Adam Chadaj).

Well, Russia could have the beautiest team with Safin and Kirilenko, instead they have Gabashvili and Kuznetsova, but I wish them luck and I'll try to follow how Gaba plays the high-ranked players he's never met before.

Champion Safin in doubt for Australian Open (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=sportsNews&storyID=2005-12-27T105053Z_01_MCC738999_RTRUKOC_0_US-TENNIS-OPEN.xml&archived=False)

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Marat Safin is increasingly unlikely to defend his Australian Open title because of a knee injury, tournament director Paul McNamee said on Tuesday.

Safin has not played since August and is facing a race against time to be ready for the Australian Open, starting at Melbourne Park on January 16.

The Russian announced his withdrawal from the Hopman Cup, one of the lead-up events for the Open, in a statement on his website.

"Not playing this tournament, which was an important part of his preparation for Melbourne, certainly puts him behind the eight ball," McNamee told reporters on Tuesday.

"There is certainly a big question mark over his participation in the Open."

Safin won his first Australian Open this year, beating Roger Federer in the semi-finals then coming from a set down to defeat Lleyton Hewitt in the final.

He has been plagued by knee trouble since tearing a ligament at Wimbledon and has not played since the Cincinnati Masters Series in August.

McNamee said he was still waiting on news about Spain's French Open champion Rafael Nadal after the world number two withdrew from the Indian Open in Chennai.

Nadal told organizers he was pulling out of next week's season-opening event because of a foot injury that forced him to miss the Masters Cup.

"There is no more information other than he's pulled out of Chennai," McNamee told Australian radio.

"Fingers crossed there. He's obviously the number two for Melbourne and a pretty big guy there."

Australian Open organizers are also hoping Maria Sharapova and four-times champion Andre Agassi will recover for the event.

Sharapova withdrew from the Australian women's hardcourt championships, which she had intended to use as a warm-up, because of a shoulder problem while Agassi is battling a long-term ankle injury.

Players have been asking for the first grand slam of the year, which is traditionally held in the last two weeks of January, to be moved back to March when the weather is cooler and also to give them a longer break.

It is not unusual for top players to miss the Australian Open through injury and this year's casualties included defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, beaten finalist Kim Clijsters and Jennifer Capriati, the 2001 and 2002 winner.

Tennis Australia officials did agree to push the 2007 tournament back one week but later scrapped the plan and reverted back to the original dates.

That's a real shame. If Safin doesn't play the AO, where roughly can we expect him to drop to in the rankings?

He has been there previously, and he bounced back ;) He just needs to be healthy enough to play good tennis. If he can´t play AO it`ll be sad, but I prefer that than rushing a comeback and making things worst.
