Sure, there's no such thing as understanding too many languages especially when we have so many immigrants in New York.

My English & Italian is decent, French isn't really a necessity (studied more as a youth), Spanish & Italian have many similarities, easy to follow more basic conversations and the words can be made out. Let's add it in Mandarin with your help.

The pronunciation is slightly different. Poutonghua carries more Beijing accent while Mandarin is not. ;) I have friends from Taiwan and Beijing and I can assure you they are different. Also, Singapore use simplified font which relates to Poutonghua.

Many people use Mandarin as a blanket for the Chinese language. That's why I always trying to point out the difference whenever this arise. I'm really picky on this one. For me, Mandarin is one of the many dialects that Chinese speak. And it's the official one in Taiwan. Putonghua is the official one in China. And that's the one that Singapore is using. The phonics, i.e. b,p,m,f etc are from Putonghua which is Romanized. Mandarin is still using the traditional phonics.

And in my son's school, the world globe still put Hong Kong under U.K. :p

As you can see from the above that Mandarin carries the undertone of Imperialism there and the Communist Party in China definitely doesn't like it. That's where Mandarin, a language spoken by people of upper class, is changed to putonghua, meaning common language.

Mandarin was the official language in China in the good old days.

It's completely ruining the flow of traffic, everything is moving at the pace of a turtle.

Very annoying, I live in Manhattan and NYU isn't far, neither is much of anything else, but for other people that need to get here (especially clients) it makes their life tough and it's costing not only the city money, but businesses.

Nice time of the year to pull such bullshit.

My coworker was actually planning on going into the city this week to do some shopping for the holidays. Getting in on NJ transit of course would be fine, but then she realized she would never be able to get to anwhere else she needed to go, and she didn't feel like driving so she didn't go. I'd imagine retail is definitely taking a big hit these next few days.

Oh, I shall, once I get ticking. I have that book and my 2343 ADD books to skim through. I don't actually think I have ADD (despite having a formal diagnosis) I think I just exhibit symptoms of it for various other reasons (as in, I exhibit these symptoms in an extreme nature, not just on a low level that most can claim). Hence the further investigation. Doubt I'll read anything I didn't already know
