Polls were made in the "Polls & Quizzes Forum" for a long time. They were announced here in GM. And if Roddick is not here is because he didn┤t have enough votes to the next round in one of the polls. If I`m not wrong, at least all the top 100 players were included. ;)

That's correct, only that it was Top 150 Indesit Race Ranking players which were the ones included, so that's the only reason Guga is still in the poll. Well, aside that he's one of the most charismatic players ever on the tour (and one of the most voted in these polls).

As a matter of fact, I felt tempted of starting the same polls over there, but I was not sure, I posted very little there, I don't have a good knowledge of repetitive issues discussed or posted, so I didn't want to take the chance and then find out that something similar had been posted some time ago (believe me I can tell what it is  ) But I'll consider to do it if people want it ;)

Lau.....you gotta give the credit to Marat's looks..., take Stepanek for instance.........Radek's popularity here (low) is proportional to his sex-appeal (and I do think he's got some) :o

Edit: just to add some words to make some sense

Yeah, his looks count, BUT it`s not the only or the main reason why he wins this polls ;) If this was the case F.Lo and Roddick would be in the top 10.
And, by the way, Stepanek problem is not only his looks, but his performance (which is his highest ranking and how many titles did he win??) and some of his attitudes on court. ;) :)

I know he's got more!!! Marat's
However as this poll was started to find our best player of the year....and Marat played so little (May or June, Halle?) this year......we gotta give almost all the credit for being in the final poll to his looks.........and of course AUS Open winner :worship: But I guess, somehow, at this time of the year, whatever happened 10 months ago, is so hard to remember :haha:

Retrospectively, why our final 10 are here:

Roger Federer, almost got the same record held by McEnroe...almost unstoppable, US Open and Wimbledon :worship:
Rafael Nadal, King of Clay 2005, Roland Garros!
David Nalbandian, TMC Champion..DC semifinal tie against Australia and particularly Nalbandian def. Hewitt :D
Marat Safin, AUS Open......and imagining him naked.
Juan Carlos Ferrero, Dunno, is he hot??
Richard Gasquet, first appearance on a TMS Final, many frenchies on MTF
James Blake, amazing comeback, US Open performance :worship:
Carlos Moya, another hottie....good guy, crappy year.
Paul Henry Mathieu, Sincerely dunno, way too many frenchies here...no doubt
Gustavo Kuerten, He's just the most friendly player ever and we appreciate it.

I guess the 1st spot is practically decided, but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th are not....David, Rafael and Roger have a tight race...

In any case...as it was discussed before, if you take the 4 most voted in this poll, you get all 2005 GSs champions and the 2005 TMC champion, which I don't find coincidential ;)

I hope we can get at least 400 votes total....so please keep voting!!

What kind of bashing do you mean?

All this players have fans too. But, :banghead: geeeez, you`re right, Truc... How could I forget Coria and Hewitt? they are much more bashed than anyone else. Close to them comes Roddick(maybe Gaudio is in the same group as Roddick  ), then comes the group of David, Gaudio, PHM, etc, etc, etc... And Nadal is somewhere near Roddick..., perhaps behind him, but as I said, he has got lots of fans too. :)
Of course, this is purely speculation, my personal opinion ;) and I`m talking about MTF only :p

Anyway, my point was that Roger is not even close to being one of the most bashed players here :)

Marat winning this poll is not surprise (Marat the king of popularity polls in MTF :rocker2: ), but David so close to the 2║ place and 3║ it is a surprise for me! and Roger 4║ too.
And I┤m very happy to see Moyß, PHM and Guga in the top 10 :) :bounce:

Yeah, his looks count, BUT it`s not the only or the main reason why he wins this polls ;) If this was the case F.Lo and Roddick would be in the top 10.
And, by the way, Stepanek problem is not only his looks, but his performance (which is his highest ranking and how many titles did he win??) and some of his attitudes on court. ;) :)

it should be... he is ALSO good looking.
the main thing is, although he has not played half of 2005, he still remains the most interesting, most colourful, complete and best character, and will always remain. thats why his popularity stays the same even when he is not playing.

No surprise to see Marat, Rafa and Roger up there. Also, no surprise to see Carlos and Juan Carlos in the top 10.

I was surprised to see Gasquet and Nalba get so many votes. I guess, after the TMC, David really became very popular. Also, I'm surprised to see PHM make it into the top 10.

I was also surprised about Guga, I thought he would get more votes. I also thought Andy Roddick would make it into the top 10.

I think it has to do with the way the poll was organized - I missed the earlier stage of the process, but earlier post said Roddick lost because he was in a v. competitive group including Federer. I don't understand the groupings, but perhaps players were eliminated by places in the ranks? e.g. choose fav or top 5 then 6-10, 11-15 ???? Reminds me a bit of how the survey people can affect the results according to how they word the questions.

Kind of confused - didn't see an explanation for it, but probably missed that post. There's another thread that asks people to rank their top ten favs and comes up with very different results including Andy very highly placed.

No, polls were divided just according all players' rankings. In first round Polls (15 polls) Top 150 Indesit Race players were split onto those groups in order, giving: Group 1: Players #1, #16, #31 and so on...
Players from every group who had the highest amount of votes continued to the following round. If groups were tough or not was not the issue, of course votes might have been affected by having lots of popular players inside the same poll but the truth is, in this particular case, Roddick just did not have enough votes to continue ;)

Why 1-15? Why not 1-5 or 1-10 or 1-25 or whatever? And what determined the cut-off? Did 2 of the 15 made it, or a certain number of votes required to make the cut-off? It's all arbitrary.

Wouldn't you expect the most popular players to be in the top 15?
Is Mathieu e.g. (no offense to him intended, I like him, just surprised to see him in the poll of top players at all) more popular than any of the top 15?

You can run the poll anyway you want to. I'm just having trouble seeing too much value in the results when designed this way, that's all. The design of the poll or the wording of the question in a survey can be v. determinative.

I think you are misunderstanding how it was run. I'm sure the polls are still in the poll section.

It was done like this:

Group A had the #1 player, #16 player #31 player etc... not 1-16.

then Grou B had #2, #17, #32

So that a sampling of high ranked players and low ranked players were all in the same groups.

Then in order to move on there was a system of not only how the players did in their own group but also compared to other groups based on the number of votes they got and the percentage of votes they got.

Before you criticize you should maybe actually go look at the polls.

I think it was well run.

Mathieu made it to the top 15 because people here voted for him. Simple as that. Ranking doesn't always equal popularity.

I'm fairly new around here, so I didn't know where to find the historical polls - sorry for that. I checked through this thread, but it didn't explain the methodology. As for why I misunderstood, it's because someone posted that Roddick and Federer were in the same group - based on the description of rank spacing between the groups I wouldn't have expected two closely & highly ranked to be put together. BTW, I'm quite happy that popularity is not directly related to rank and glad to see recognition to players not typically recognized. IMO there is too much focus on a select few players when high quality tennis can be found throughout the tour. Even players on the Challenger level have great days on which they can outperform top ATP players - probably why some ATP players still participate in Challenger events. Regardless, I still can't help thinking that some of the results could be a bit of a fluke, being influenced by who else the player was competing against, rather than genuine overall popularity. I'm going to drop this now as explaining makes it seem like I'm unhappy with your poll and I'm not. I support any polls people want to create as they are all interesting, and this poll definitely has merit. Thanks for taking the time to create and administer it.

Roddick lost in the semifinal.. there were 3 rounds before that I believe. Groupings were done methodically not predetermining who the "popular" players were and keeping them away from eachother.

I started the polls :wavey: and that's ok...it was not meant to be serious.
I agree with you that the results might have been different if all polls were arranged some other way...but you cannot blame chance..... this time it turned out this way...some other time might have another end...I dunno. ;)

It's not my intention to "bump" this thread (I actually thought it was posted in the Non-Tennis/Polls forum).....since there's a huge contest (arse clown) running atm, I wondered if there could be a good reception to this Poll for faves players re-done by the end of this year...:o ( I admit I've loved it)
Now taking a look at some of those picked as Top 10  I've absolutely forgotten who they were.
