Barbie Toys With Tennis

By Tennis Week

Barbie comes complete with a new Head this holiday season. Without the benefit of training at a tennis academy, a domineering tennis dad or Ken as a mixed doubles partner, Barbie can help turn tennis into child's play for kids.

Head/Penn Racquet Sports and Mattel's co-branded tennis products for young girls called the Head Barbie Junior Series are on U.S. store shelves in now.

Designed for girls ages 4 to 9 (or 40 to 55 inches tall), the Head Barbie Junior Series line includes three junior tennis racquets and a racquet bag. Also available is a Head Barbie Junior Pack that includes a 25-inch racquet, pink two-tone pressure less tennis balls and a water bottle.

"By aligning HEAD products with a brand as established and prestigious as Barbie, we will gain instant recognition and credibility among young girls at retail and on the courts," said Greg Mason, Director of Sales & Marketing for HEAD/Penn Racquet Sports. "With fun, colorful tennis equipment in their hands, young girls will be inclined to play longer and more often."

Manufacturers are hoping Barbie will serve up sales with shoppers. "It is a strategic priority for us to partner with authentic brands outside the traditional toy world — in this case a leading brand in the sporting goods category," said Richard Dickson, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Consumer Products, Mattel, Inc. "Together, Barbie® and HEAD have created a powerhouse line of products that will prove popular with customers."
