I personally was hoping that he would play Kooyong instead of Sydney because a lot of the big names have commited there and it would have been great if he could play against the best players in the world before the AO. Still, I'm glad he will be playing so no complaints! :p

I'm surprised Richard is playing both tourneys beforehand, but whatever works for him -good way to shake the rust off, I guess.

Apparently, he might not play either. A French poster said that there was a quote from him in L'Equipe saying that his priority is the AO and whether he plays Doha will depend on how things turn out. :(

Now that he has fully recovered from his injury, he said he will play Doha :)

He is only due to play the Open de Marseille as well as :
Raphael Nadal, Marat Safin, Nikolay Davydenko, Ivan Ljubicic, Tim Henman, Thomas Berdych, Mario Ancic, Taylor Dent, Felicinao Lopez, Radek Stepanek, Fernando Verdasco, Gaël Monfils, Sébastien Grosjean, Arnaud Clément, Fabrice Santoro...

I dont think thats is the worse draw even if its not really a present :D

Henman,Haas,Rochus then Federer. It could be his road in this tournament hopefully.

henman is not what he was some years ago.

Haas: very talented player but not consistant.

Rochus:very good player but richard is just better.

Tim Henman is a tough first round opponent and even though he didn't have a good 2005, you never know how he is going to play in 2006. I think its a good first round match to test the waters for Richard. I would love to see a Richard-Roger semi, but let's take one match at a time for both players.

As for the doubles draw, I would love a Richard/Seb vs Julien/Nicolas 2nd round match. J and N are a great team :yeah:

Henman says he is "raring to go" I just hope he's raring back to Britannia in straight sets. What is he 34 yrs? Hard to be very raring at that age. More limpy, I should say.

Three sets would have been nice. The long wait over the winter for such a short time on the court. He'll improve-he'd better!

My thoughts exactly :yeah:
He looked rather nervous as well. He was frowning as usual. Eric won't be happy with that.

Anyway, he hasn't been very lucky to draw a player like Henman after a so long break cos he didn't really have the opportunity to settle his game properly.
Hopefully, with some match plays, he will gain confidence.

well said julie! ;)

I was on the livescore board but coudnt support the stress more,I left.sorry lol(silver and linus)

I watched the end of match and richard could have won this second set,he had 2 break points on henman serve at 4-5 ,saved 3 matchpoints.I think with more matchs or if he was facing another kind of player(not a net attaquant like henman)he would have win.

Its not a bad lost though even if its still a lost.Let be positive and hope that he have a better luck in sydney with the draw and gain some confidence there by winnings matchs. ;)

Richard: "It was a very hard draw for my first tournament back after three months. He's one of the best players in the world and he played really well today. He volleyed well and did not give me too much rhythm from the baseline. But I take a lot of positive things out of this match: I feel no pain in my elbow and look forward to my next event in Sydney." --ATP SITE

almost the same on cnn website :

"It's difficult to play against him: he's a great player," Gasquet said of the former world number four. "But I haven't played for a long time and it was a difficult match for me.

"He played very well and I am just happy because I played," added the teenager level-headedly, referring to a three-month absence from competition with an elbow injury.

"Last year I had a lot of pain and now I have no pain, which is good. I just have to practise and I will be OK."

Has there been any news on Gasquet/Grosjean vs. Monfils/Wawrinka? On the order of play/scores topic, an alternate team seemed to have replaced Gasquet/Grosjean.

Gasquet/Grosjean didn't play, they were replaced by Tursunov/Starace. This is Grosjean who retired because of "right hamstring". :(
http://www.atptennis.com/en/common/TrackIt.asp?file=/posting/2006/451/mdd.pdf

The only good news is that it wasn't Gasquet who retired...

I was looking forward to checking the result all day and having Richard get more match play in. When I saw an alt. team was placed in I was so worried that Richard rehurt his elbow or something. Not that I want anyone to be hurt, but thankfully it wasn't Richard. :)

I couldn"t stand anymore injuries either!

But on the other hand-Nadal says he has one or could he just be saying that and he's really just getting ready for AO.
This leaves Gasquet 4th seed in Sydney? I hope he gets a good draw.
Any news on if he's still in Qatar or maybe left for Sydney?

At least Monfils is having a great time in Qatar!

Yea I'm not too happy about the draw either. I like both Richie and Igor so it's breaking my heart. Their head to head is tied 1-1 Richie won last year on Clay during DC 6-3 6-4 7-6. They've both had first round loses this week so it'll be interesting.

I love the fact that he and Gael said they were better than Rafa ... in English!!! Cute guys! Have you seen the "cartoon" for the AO w Richard and Rafa looking so cute together? Check it out... er... somewhere.
It's in the gallery thread ;)

and this question again "wouldn't it be great to listen to a Rafa-Richard conversation in english?"

the draw does suck

but i have been used to accept anything before the match begins. coz we all know the win doesnt depend on how weak your opponent is but yourself.

but i am a bit worried about his first round also which is too cruel for Richie's chance road in AO, so good good luck

Yes, I do think Richard can do it, he has nothing to lose.
Federer was asked about the match Gasquet-Haas and said Richard is his favorite in this match – he knows what he's talking about!

I don't know the original interview, sorry, he was only quoted in an article about Haas I've read on a German website:
"Im Achtelfinale der Australian Open könnte es nun erneut ein Aufeinandertreffen geben, doch daran glaubt Federer nicht: "Für mich ist Gasquet der Favorit gegen Haas.""
(Haas could meet Federer again in the 4rth round, but Federer doesn't think so: "For me, Gasquet is the favorite against Haas.")

I hope he can bounce back and play well in Indian Wells, Miami, and the clay court season, even if he does lose! His first serve percentage and break point conversion rates are definitely two things he's going to need to improve if he wants to win these kinds of matches.

Thanks for the info Silverwhite. I saw the stats u posted in other thread. Doesnt really look that lopsided of a match.

Julie you were wise to miss this one.I wish I hadn't punished myself and followed the match.

Im not depressed about this one though. Read some article by Tracy Austin about venus loss. She thinks u lose without match practice. Gasquet looked REALLY out of it. MENTALLY A VOID! And he will get in some matches-EVENTUALLY.
Of course this depends on if the draw gods finally have mercy on him. Maybe they are jealous of his talent, youth and beauty.
According to another poster somewhere his manhood might also be the object of their envy. I wish I knew how that poster knew that one.
