Chesnokov shot twice

Russian tennis player Andrei Chesnokov was shot twice on Sunday after a dispute in a Ukrainian restaurant, local media reported. Chesnokov, formerly the world's number nine men's tennis player, was treated in hospital but his life was not in danger, Russian news agencies said.

"The Russian sportsman was relaxing in a restaurant with a friend when, after a disagreement, an unknown man shot him several times with rubber bullets," RIA Novosti news agency quoted a spokesman for the Ukrainian police as saying.

Ukrainian officials were not immediately available for comment on the reports of the shooting, which took place in the early hours of Sunday in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk.

The highlight of Chesnokov's career was in 1989, when he reached the semi-finals of the French Open. He also won seven less well-known singles events.

The 39-year-old retired from the professional tour in 1999, although Russian sports paper Sovietsky Sport reported he had been in Dnipropetrovsk to play in a local tournament.

Chesnokov shot twice

"The Russian sportsman was relaxing in a restaurant with a friend when, after a disagreement, an unknown man shot him several times with rubber bullets," RIA Novosti news agency quoted a spokesman for the Ukrainian police as saying.

Chessy goes from "relaxing" to a disagreement (with whom I wonder) to being shot by an unknown man several times.

Used to love to watch him play. When he was on the tour, he was the only male player with a female coach. He'd been with her since he was young. Beautiful serve.

Hope Chezzy is alright and I wonder what it was about and he was not playing in the tournament, just happened to be in the city where the challenger was played.

Poor Andrei !! They like attacking their sportsmen in the ex-Russian countries. A few years ago, a swimmer (Popov) have been attacked in Russia.

Chesnokov out of hospital after shooting

KIEV, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Russia's former tennis player Andrei Chesnokov, who was shot twice on Sunday after a dispute in a bar in Ukraine, was discharged from hospital on Monday, local sports officials said.

"He has already left hospital and returned home to Moscow," sports association chairman Anatoly Kosyi told Reuters from the central Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk.
Chesnokov had successful surgery earlier in the day to remove rubber bullets.
"His life is out of danger and he is expected to make a full recovery," Kosyi added.
Chesnokov, 39, was shot twice in the stomach in the early hours of Sunday following an argument in one of the bars in Dnipropetrovsk. Local police said they had detained an individual suspected of the shooting.

Chesnokov became the first Russian player to reach the top 10 in the world in the early 1990s. A semi-finalist at the 1989 French Open, he also won seven ATP titles.
After retiring from the professional tour in 1999, Chesnokov lived in France for several years playing in senior tournaments. He briefly coached former world number one Marat Safin in 2000.

Chesnokov was in Dnipropetrovsk to play a local senior tournament.

For the longest time I thought this was just a thread with a random photo of the guy. Then I saw the headline on a sports page and was like... oh. HE WAS SHOT. I get it.
