My meeting with Andrei Pavel! :D

I met him on wednesday.despite he lost on monday,he was still there to practise.I met him yesterday,he was watching Hanescu's match with his coach (a very nice black guy) and i asked him for an autograph and i wished him "welcome back after his injury".he thanked me warmly.then he talked at telephone and i was taking a pic of that til his coach told me "hey do ya want a pic with him?" I was surprised he started to talk to me LOL i said "yes,it would be great, thanks" and he said "are u french?" I said "no i'm italian why?" he said "cos ur accent sounds like a french" I was and said "no maybe it's cos i'm studying french right now" and he asked me why etc.we talked for 5 minutes waiting for Pavel who was still on the phone.I kept saying that I woudnt bother him again but his coach told me "no it's ok,he's a nice guy" and we both laughed.when Pavel ended his call,he agreed smiling and told me "sorry if if u had to wait for me" in italian I was like "no it was just 5 minutes,it's ok!" and he hugged me and his coach took the pic.then we stayed other 5 minutes watching the end of hanescu's match and keep talking about his injury etc.he said now he feels good but he's rusty and needs to practise and play days and days to be in the best shape again.I met him again 4 hours after, cos he was practising in the same Paulo's court, and he said "hello" and winked me LOL

After his great Paris tournie, Andrei wisely chose to play a challenge, i think In Ukraine, and he got to the semis, having a good win over Vladimir Voltchkov. This is good as Andrei's injury ranking will run out soon.

Andrei actually played one more Challenger before taking the last few weeks of '03 off. He played the Milan Challenger a couple of weeks ago where he lost in the QFs to (5)Dennis Van Scheppingen 7-6(5) 3-6 3-6. andrei ended the year at 69 so he still had a great year after being out most of it and then the great run in Paris

Hallo, Pavel-Fans, did you see that part in the Ferrero-match when he almost ran into the refrigerator and then offered some "ice-cream" to the crowd? After that he climbed into the refrigerator. That shows what a funny person he is. I´m sorry he lost that match, but it´s nice to see him coming back after his injuries.

Yes, ame I saw that incident with the water cooler that was very funny, unfortunately he hasn't played enough tennis and he ran out of condition in the 4th.

Anca, I don't think he will change too much.
Hopefully he can build on that start and have a successful year.

Here is something that you may not have read, it's about Andrei growing up in Romania.

A Tennis Upbringing
By Jeff Tarango and Andre Pavel
If you think that the tennis learning environment is grueling and difficult, read about this learning environment and see how hard it is in other parts of the world.

Andre Pavel grew up in Romania at a time when Eastern Europe was dominated by a Communist government and it's philosophies of strict discipline and social policies of the State. Recently, Andre started telling me a story about one of his youth's experiences. He said: We (Romania) had so many children that were interested in tennis and so many were very good and would have been great players, if the system would have allowed it."

Sound familiar? He continued: “there were 10 to 15 thousand children in the first camp of every season. They would line up and each would hit a shot and move to the back of the line. Once they got to the back of the line, they were told to go home. The coaches singled out what they thought were the best children until there were only 20 to 30 children left." Wow!! Talk about the importance of making a good first impression.

After this minor adjustment in the natural order of the screening process, the lessons or season of lessons would start. Andre continued by explaining how his best friend always had to go in front of him. When running, he would push himself to the limit to make sure he finished in front of Andre. No matter where they went or what they were doing, his friend so badly wanted to be better than Andre Pavel. He would do anything to stay ahead of Andre or he felt a responsibility to always stay a step or three ahead of him. This ambition to be the best is different for everyone, but this was his motivation.

Practice consisted of one line with the child in front playing a rally with the instructor. Then, going to the end of the line and waiting the next turn. The tennis court was a parquet floor like a basketball gymnasium and was very fast. We are talking "lightning fast". What did Andre's friend discover? Going first is not always the best idea. He missed the first ball and was told to advance to the net. The instructor came to the net to speak to him, or so they thought. Upon reaching the net, the instructor forehanded Andre's friends face, then swiftly backhanded him, forehand and backhand again. Four cracks to the head. The instructor said: "No one misses the first ball or they get the same". Andre said: "Of course, I didn't miss the first ball, but talk about pressure, that's pressure."

The next time his friend went to rally with the instructor, he missed the first ball... again. Wham!!, four smacks to the head, face, whatever. Ouch!!. Now you won't believe this, but the next time, Andre's friend missed the first ball again... and four more smacks to the head. He was now black and blue. Adding insult to injury, when they were done with the practice, they went over to their parents to go home and quess what happened. The father of Andre’s friend also started hitting his son on the head. Yelling, "Why did you keep missing the first ball? Andre never missed one ball. What's the matter with you?" ... boom, boom, boom, boom!
The moral of the story is: Don't miss the first ball! Got it?

Now in today’s day and age we feel that parents and instructors should be reprimanded and prosecuted for striking a child on the tennis court. But, in Andre's day in Romania, the issue of abuse was one of the least of ones worries. Instructors had their positions in society for a reason and their authority was not to be questioned. Andre said: "Without this strict disciplinary attitude, which is obviously over the threshold of behavior, the children would not have had the concentration spans or discipline to listen and learn at the incredibly fast rate that a child needs to learn in order to become a top world contender".

Obviously there are other methods that can be used to learn the principles of discipline and concentration. The proven best tennis instructors need to be given a sort of "Carte Blanche" about how they train and mentally form a child into a competitive tennis player.

In the United States, Harry Hopman and Robert Lansdorp used this tough concept to instill an “overdrive mechanism” into their top-flight players. Both coaches had critics who said their methods were “too harsh” or “a child shouldn’t be subjected to their harsh criticism, discipline and training in order to be a champion” But no one, and I mean no one, can argue with these two coaches success rates for developing world class tennis players.

Life is never easy for those who choose to attain a level of excellence in some chosen field, but the game of tennis is easy and that is why the best performers are those who push themselves hardest (or are lovingly persuaded) and can discipline themselves to follow the necessary difficult regimen required to be one of the best.

That is why a child should not be led to believe that life is easy just because they have the means and desire to play tennis and have countless instruction. The “real world” ideas of hard work, discipline, grinding, fighting for a steak, earning a place, climbing the ladder, can all be learned in the “glamorous” world of tennis. In fact, players that are the most successful gradually learn and understand how tough the world can be and are willing to endure the “grind” in order to reap the rewards.

The child must learn to recognize that to be one of the best that they can, and must push themselves beyond the normal rationale. They must be determined. Without this cognitive recognition a parent can coax, yell at the child, or can pay forever to have a coach blow wind in their sails but nothing will come of it except hot air.

This self recognition is not easily taught. The list is three miles long of children that had the talent but never made the grade. The list of coaches that tell parents that they can develop a champion are just as long. The ATP and WTA are filled with good professional players and coaches. But generally, year after year the players with the talent and the best coaching always seem to be on top.
So you say there must be more to the puzzle than just this article’s motif:
“If all it takes is hard work, every donkey would be in the Kentucky Derby.”

That’s right! So read the next edition’s article for the next piece to this complex puzzle.

Yes, it was one of the funniest incidents in the whole Australian Open. Björkie it would have been a huge honour to knock some sense into another moronic halfwit. Btw, Pavel had quite a big party after he lost, I am not sure if that means he was a sore loser about his match.

Only marginally better seats :yeah:

he's playing a qualifier in the 1st round at Miami and he could set up an encounter with Hewitt in the 3rd round! But first he will have to pass the 1st round, then get past 10th seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile, who, imho, is not a rubbish player at all, actually he is really good, only his start of year was kinda disastrous (like Schuettler's). HAI ANDREI!

he lost to ljubicic 64 46 36....but well he had a nice week in roma and a third round in hamburg isn't bad at all. it's true that he's #13 in the race!!! :D

He pulled out of doubles claiming his right wrist. I'm hoping that was just an excuse or a precaution.

Iza
05-14-2004, 08:28 PM
i think it was: i mean he's 30! he gets tired easier than a 20 year-old does obv! So why bother with the doubles! He is getting prepared for Roland Garros!

i hope he will be great in rg...he really deserves it! remeber, he did a SF against corretja( another old one!) in 2002! and he has a pretty good game on clay!
so andrei: go on!!!

yeah, well, good luck Pavel! you'll need it. And i'm not just talking about his match against Murray. He has R16 to defend and I don't think he can do that. He's already at 39 in Entry, and he'll go down if he doesn't repeat his last year performance. Hanescu on the other hand has nothing to defend, and after USO we may have a new no.1 Romanian. But neither one of them can go far because they have Federer in their draw. :(
Again, good luck to both.

I only became a big Pavel fan in January, which is sad coz I missed following him for most of his career. In January, at the Aust Open I went up to him while he was waiting to practice and asked if I could take a photo of him and he said "No". I got rather freaked out and starting backing away before I realised he was smiling. He kept smiling and said "take a photo" Then I got an autograph as well and really, it was one of my funniest and best AO moments ever!!

Trifu, I only really knew this year... after I became an Andrei fan. But after seeing photos I realise I've seen him around before.

I was at andrei's match yesterday...he was playing realy great but well...sometimes there is nothing to do...esp when haas serves like this
anyway andrei wasn't too much sad at all cause he told me "oh...that's nothing"
I'm sorry I didn't take photo during the match cause my sister didn't give me the camera...but I have some with him I'll post one even if it's not the best pic in the world because andrei and I was talking...this guy cannot stop talking

what can I say more?....miruna I kissed him two times the second one I asked him but the frst one he aproched his head for me to kiss him and said hello
he also shake my hand 3 times so everyone here can imagine how happy I am
what's more? well I think it's all

Just pulling this thread up since I'm SOOOO happy with Andrei's win over Moya today  He showed such great fight in the 5th set and I'm so proud of him today! He got frustrated and hit a ball out of the court so far that it landed in Margaret Court Arena :o and he got a little bit angry, but stayed focused enough to win... and he even corrected a bad call and conceded a point to Moya at a crucial time so the umpire changed the score :yeah:

About an hour before his match I found him training and I was the only one watching so it was really easy to get my photo with him from last year autographed  I wished him the very best of luck for today and he had a big smile and said thankyou... so I will consider myself a good luck charm :p

No problem :D There are more pics I have taken yesterday and today (I saw him training today) but I have to fix up the photos first

He signed my Romanian hat today.... my 4th Andrei autograph and 2nd in 2 days :p

Congratulated him on his match today and told him it was awesome :D

Tomorrow he plays Santoro in the first match of the day... I'll be nervous again, but I'm proud that he's made it to round 2 since I was convinced Moya would beat him!

 Andrei

I hope to get there on a European tour in a few years time, but I may not. I bought the hat to support Andrei and the Romanian gymnasts when I went to the Gym World Championships in November.

Of course I will be sharing the photos when I have them ready :yeah:
I can't wait to show them :)

Also just looked up the doubles draw and he's playing doubles with Hanescu (who I also got the autograph of when he was watching Andrei's match the other day). I thought it was fantastic that they were playing doubles... until I realised that they have drawn the Bryan Brothers in the first round :bigcry: Andrei won the Auckland doubles on the weekend and I thought he might have a chance of going a bit further here again too :(
