Federer was solid, but nothing particularly special.

Federer served rather poorly, but that doesn't matter when your opponent can't buy a serve, and is making unforced errors all over the place.

What a shame for a player who enters TMC!!! I think Gaudio should quit playing tennis. How did he manage to enter TMC and how did he beat Gonzalez and go into the semifinals I couldn't believe now. It's bad for tennis that he managed to go into the semifinals. Also I think that he is the worst player ever to win a Grand Slam!!!

Permorfances like Gaudio's today are an insult for people who buy a ticket to see a tennis match .

There are a lot of forrms to lose a match, some forms with dignity and others making a fool of himself . ( Watching his first service of the match making 4 doubles faults was already a premonition )

Seeing that up to now, Gaudio had given Roger a hard time, even on fast courts, either taking a set, or taking Roger to a tiebreak in all of their previous encounters, this really is a shock. Especially as it looks as though Roger wasn't even on especially sparkling form:

2004 TMC, Hard, RR Houston, TX, USA RR Federer 6-1, 7-6
2004 Hamburg AMS, Clay, R64 Germany R64 Federer 6-1, 5-7, 6-4
2003 Montreal, Hard, R64 Canada Hard R64 Federer 6-4, 3-6, 7-5
2003 Gstaad, Clay, Switzerland S Federer 6-1, 7-6

Poor Gaudio. But it's pointless to slag Roger for this. You can't expect him to give games away to opponents who haven't earnt them.

I will never understand why so much polemics about this kind of performance from Gaudio. In my opinion it was improbable that this would happen, I personally really didn't expect for this. But this shouldn't be so shocking, he already did others of this level, Gaudio probably was tired and when he saw that Federer was very well he decided to give up.
Ugly and disappointing?

Yes - I'm sure he is - and all his fans are too  - but I don't see why people are being so hard on him - well apart from the usual suspect haters of course  I watched the match on TV and he really fought and tried hard - it's just that at the end of the day Roger was too good for him - he is too good for nearly everybody these days so it's no shame to lose to him - especially on a court that favours his game more than Gaston's. Yes, it's true that Gaston was very tight and nervous (who wouldn't be?), and he came out thinking Roger would win - but despite the dreadful scoreline I'm still proud of him for getting this far in the Masters' Cup. Enjoy your off-season break Gaston, and come back strong and rested in 2006.

OK haters, we all know Gaudio can play for shite in this kind of surface, he already said that in an interview in ESPN (very short but sincere) he knows he can't play but he was gonna try his best. If he lost with a double bagel WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT???, what happens is that some of the posters in this site have never bothered to pick up a racket and throw themselves on a court to play, you just sit there in your couch criticizing and talking crap about players. I play juniors tournament and i've played guys ranked in top 10 of the state, me being not even in the ranking list and lost with a double bagel or breadstick and i don't feel sad or start crying, if you feel like you gave 100 % of what you have you don't have to worry about anything the other guy was just to good and you don't know how frustating it is for Gaudio who has lost 5 times to him and Mr. Andy, when you try and give all you have play your best tennis (im not saying that el Gato did that today) and you still get trashed by your opponent. That's all I have to say guys. OHHH and BTW while we talk about Gaudio and some of you bash him he's saying "La concha de su madre boludo, mirá, perdi 6-0 6-0 y me dieron todo este dinero."

SATURDAY REVIEW November 19, 2005

Federer Reaches Shanghai Final; is Within Reach of McEnroe's Golden Season

Federer is 81-3 this season. By Bill Scott

Roger Federer made tennis history Saturday as he hammered Gaston Gaudio 6-0, 6-0 in their Tennis Masters Cup 05 semifinal, the first "double bagel" ever recorded at a year-end championship.

Not since season wrapups began in 1970 has a player taken a match victory without the loss of even one game.

But the silky-smooth Swiss world No. 1 spent just 50 minutes as he administered a devastating master class to the outclassed Argentine, last year's Roland Garros champion.

Gaudio went completely off his game as he slumped to nine doublefaults and 22 unforced errors. Federer had 22 winners and broke on six of ten occasions.

Federer now stands just a match win away from tying John McEnroe's Open Era record for best match winning percentage in a season. McEnroe had a .965 mark (82-3) in 1984.

The 24-year-old Swiss stands 81-3 with a Sunday final looming at the Qi Zhong tennis stadium for his final match of another devastatingly successful season.

The two-time champion who has never lost a group match at the event will be aiming for his 12th title of the season.

Since losing to Rafael Nadal in the Roland Garros semifinals more than five months ago, Federer has compiled a career-best 35-match winning streak.

He now pulls level in the victory stakes with Austrian Thomas Muster, who won 35 on the trot in 1995 - fifth-longest winning streak in the post-1968 Open Era

Gaudio turned in a disasterous 29-minute first set, marred by seven doublefaults - two to yield Federer set points - and only one winner.

The unsteady Argentine handed over three doubles in the second game and could take minor heart in the fact that he took the world No. 1 to three set points.

But Federer was hardly bothered by the distraction, collecting the opener from Gaudio's 15th unforced error of the set.

The second was equally cruel to the Argentine, with Federer having his way on court without the slightest hindrance.

"It was great," said Federer. "I didn't lose any energy. I definitely played better than the last couple of matches.

"I was looking for a very consistent, solid match, no lapses like I've had in the last couple of matches. It couldn't have been any more perfect today.

"It gives me great confidence for tomorrow, that's for sure. I knew that anything was possible," said the Swiss, who injured his ankle in early October and had not played for more than a month. "Coming here, I just hoped I could play the three round?robin matches, win maybe one or two.

"Now I won all three. I'm through to the finals, too. It's definitely a surprise for me."

"No excuses," said Gaudio. "That was maybe the worst match I've played. I want to apologise to the crowd because I couldn't do anything."

"I was playing against a guy who is the best in history in a surface where he is so much better than me," said Gaudio, winner of five clay titles this season. "There's not much to say.

"Sometimes, once in a life it (0-0) happens, and it happens to me today. I'm sad about it, I'm so disappointed. But what can I do? There are things a little bit worse than this sometimes in life."

Roge could have taken some pity at 6-0 5-0 and given a game :smash: but then maybe gaston stage a comeback (stranger things have happen in tennis)

It is so bad for gaston, I hope he is not traumatize from this
It will surely send a message to the winner of david-nikolay. HOPP ROGE
what the man who has been bagled 20 plus times? i think he'll be fine psychologically. :p

don't really know what to think about this match, between roger and david it was apparently raining bagels while i slept. from what i hear rogi didn't even play that well...congrats anyway i guess. please play well in the final.

i think some of u guys are going over board here and need to chill out a bit...saying stuff like "gaston should quit playing tennis" etc is just stupid.

yes, to be double bagelled in a TMC semi is not great, but it was clear Roger was going to anhilate him beforehand anyway. I was expecting something along the lines of 6-2 6-1. Gaston was obviously lacking oomph and was perhaps also a little tired after yesterday's win coming back from the brink of defeat, while Roger had a nice day off.

I saw the match on tv and Gaston didn't play that badly when he got his serve in...his let down was his serve...too many double faults. Otherwise he was not that bad and most definitely did not tank. He was just a bit out of his depth today. I wasn't even that impressed with Roger, but he was definitely too good for sluggish Gaudio.

So just let off a bit and don't bag Gaston unfairly.

I have the feeling that Gaudio would lose in straight sets and the score would not be nice *sigh* but not double bagels :o

He's definitely too tight and never recovered serving 4 dfs to hand the first game to Federer. The umpire should probably called GSM after that one. :awww:

why did gaston bother getting into the semis?

btw, those who say even roger played like crap... just take into consideration how hard it is to look good and crisp with your shots when your opponent is extremely unpredictable and firing all over the place.

This is the semi-final of a major event. Spectators and television are entitled to expect more if the player is fit to play. It is not really Gaston's fault because when Roger plays well you do need to have the skill and ability of a Marat Safin or David Nalbandian to compete.

I knew that the winner of yesterday would have problems today, because Roger had one day off, it wasn't the case of Gaudio. The match of yesterday was tough and tiring. I was sure that Gaudio would have some problems today, first because he had to play Roger, it's not easy to play him when you are in a good shape, but when you played a tiring match the day before, it's even more difficult. About Fernando, yes, he must regret these match points he wasted. Well, now it's done, we can't re-play the match :(

It's not Fed's fault that their match was long and tiring. That's like JMac saying after Wimbledon that Roddick played a lot more tennis (i.e., that's why Fed beat him so easily). That's true but so what? It's not like Roddick had tougher opponents than Fed did. It's not his fault if several of Roddick's matches were 5 setters.

I think when the player climb to 1 - 20 TOP, all are excelent. The thing that make to be 1 to 5 TOP is the mind and the courage. (Think about Federer, the young Nadal (only 19 year old), Safin, Roddrik) How can they drive his mind with stress, with own motivation.

Federer 6-0 6-0 over Gaudio. (50 min? UFFF)

Yes, Because Gaudio didnt won the math with Fernando Gonzalez. Fernando was the men who must play with Federer. But the nervous won Fernando, not Gaudio.

Its incredible, how can Federer played with Coria (like cat with a mouse) to give emotion, you know: the challenge ( el reto ), lost and then, the bright way, won the math. I feel that he took the danger only for play an emotion game.
And then, I felt, that he sow what happen with Fernando, and Federer think and feel that Gaudio were not the best player to play him, and only killed Gaudio in 46 min.

Yes, Federer control with his mind.

(sorry Its my feel)

Sun Nov 20, 5:22 AM ET

The ATP on Sunday denied that Argentine Gaston Gaudio had not been trying during his 6-0 6-0 Masters Cup humiliation by Roger Federer in Saturday's semi-finals.

Federer's victory was the first whitewash in the 35-year history of the season-ending championships and raised further questions about the quality of the injury-hit tournament.

"I think if you talk to Gaston today, he's probably gutted," ATP chairman Etienne de Villiers told reporters in Shanghai.

"It's just humiliating. Nobody wants to go out and be humiliated, and he was humiliated. I don't think he wasn't trying -- I just think it's one of those things that happens."

Gaudio's defeat was the worst of his career and the first time world number one Federer had blanked an opponent.

A dejected Gaudio offered no excuses after the match and said he was beaten by "the best player in history."

French Open champion Rafael Nadal and former world number one Andre Agassi pulled out of the $4.45 million tournament with injury last Monday.

Andy Roddick, Marat Safin and Lleyton Hewitt were all no-shows.

Federer was just too good for Gaudio on this surface. It wasnt like Gaston tanked or wasnt trying, his opponent was just too good and it was a bad day for him too. Federer would have done a similar thing to Coria if he didnt lose concentration in the 2nd set.
