Are people here too young to remember him?

Former Tennis star, Roscoe Tanner has been extradited from Tennessee to the Pinellas County jail and booked on two arrest warrants for violation of probation. Tanner, 54, was arrested last month in Tennessee on a fugitive warrant out of Florida. He was sentenced to 10-years' probation in November 2003 for bouncing a $35,595 check he used to buy a 32-foot boat in 2000.

CLEARWATER - -- Tennis great Roscoe Tanner's first serves were known for their unmatched speed in the 1970s and '80s.

His recent court-ordered restitution payments, however, were not delivered quite as quickly, according to the Pinellas State Attorney's Office.

On Sunday, Tanner, 54, was extradited from Tennessee to the Pinellas County Jail, where he was booked on two arrest warrants for violation of probation. Both stemmed from a 10-year sentence of probation for passing a worthless check and grand theft in Pinellas. In 2003, Tanner was sentenced after bouncing a check for $35,595 for the purchase of a boat three years earlier, according to court records. He also was ordered to pay restitution to the seller.

At the time of the transaction in 2000, Tanner was a tennis pro at the Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club. The 1977 Australian Open champion and 1979 Wimbledon finalist also worked at Westchase Swim and Tennis Center that year. Four weeks ago, Tanner was arrested in Tennessee on a Florida fugitive warrant and remained in the Knox County Jail without bail pending an extradition hearing.

During his heyday, Tanner was nicknamed "Roscoe The Rocket." His mighty serve was known as the fastest in the professional game.
