This withdrawal is good for the tournament, at least in terms of competition. Agassi is lacking good physical conditions, and Gonzalez is one of the best carpet courters in the world, so he has a good shot of making it to the SF.

I'm seeing posters from other message boards saying that Andre is withdrawing due to an ankle injury. It's what they heard from commentators, but I'm wondering if this is just some confusion over Nadal's withdrawal. After all, Nadal is the one with the ankle injury, not Andre (I hope).

You guys are right... call Kuerten... NOW they'll let them play on clay. Or just cancel the tournament, switch groups for Nalbandian and Davydenko, let one group play in that creepy surface, and let the other one move to South America or Europe to play on clay...
And since this is all set-up for Roger to win, let the semis and the final be played on grass...

Agassi pulls out after tame loss

Andre Agassi pulled out of the Masters Cup with an ankle ligament injury after losing 6-4 6-2 to Nikolay Davydenko in his opening match in Shanghai.
The American third seed became the latest withdrawl following Spain's Rafael Nadal an hour earlier.

Agassi said: "There's no chance for me to play again. It's dangerous and risky for my future, an unfortunate setback."

Agassi, 35, struggled with his returns as Russia's Davydenko broke the misfiring American three times.

Agassi squandered three break points of his own in the sixth game of the second set as Davydenko cruised to victory.

The two latest injuries are a major setback for the season-ending Masters Cup, which is supposed to feature the top eight players of the year.

American Andy Roddick and Australian Open winner Marat Safin withdrew before the tournament because of injuries.

And Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, ranked fourth, opted to remain in Sydney with his wife, the actress Rebecca Cartwright, who is expecting the couple's first child within two weeks.

According to AFP AA sprained his left ankle playing racquetball 3 weeks ago. what a stupid thing to do. Anyway, it does not say as yet whether anyone will take his place or whether it'll be walkovers for everyone in his group that would have played him.

Personally I'd love to see Fernando play. I have to say though this is turning into a farce. If they all keep pulling out they'll be calling up Murray!

Agassi had a bad attitude during the second set when he got what was an obvious bad call after he hit an ace squarely on the line. he was not the same after that and didn't even try.

why go all the way to Shanghai then? did he get an appearance fee or something?

and are all of these alternates on site already or do they fly in overnight?

NYCtennisfan
11-14-2005, 03:05 PM
This has never happened before in Masters/Singles Championships/TMC history. You have the #2, #3, #4, #5, and Safin who would've been a top 8 at least if he could've played the last 12 weeks, all out. Unbelieveable.

I know I usually call Rafa the "Pig" but this time Agassi is a pig for pulling out AFTER his match. At least Nadal by pulling out before his match gave Puerta a chance to play 3 round robin matches potentially with a chance to make the semis. Now Gonzales goes in as the alternate with only 2 matches to play- in a very difficult position and with a slim chance to make the semis.

Never say never.

Just like Roddick could easily be Wimbledon champ if Roger somehow got hit by a car or had a serious injury, if Federer is sidelined then the tables turn quickly. I challenge you to name a player aside from Roger that would and could beat Agassi at the USO. You can't find one. There's a fine line being drawn here, it's ludicrous that you'd call someone that was runner-up at a Slam "foolish" and irresponsibly imply that they are finished.

Agassi warns over player burn-out

Andre Agassi has warned the tennis authorities the calendar must be overhauled or players risk burn-out.
Agassi and four other top players, including world number two Rafael Nadal, have pulled out of the Masters Cup in China due to injury.

"It's been terrible this year for the number of players who haven't been ready to play here," he said.

"It's a sign things must change for guys to feel better about their ability to get ready for an event this big."

The ball's faster, guys are stronger, the movement is much more violent now - this means more injuries
Andre Agassi

Nadal, who was unable to start his game against Gaston Gaudio because of a sore foot, echoed Agassi's concerns, and said in future he may seek medical guidance over how many tournaments to play.

"If the doctor says it's safe, I will play the same next year," he said.

"If he says play less, I will play a little bit less. The calendar is very, very tough."

Agassi, 35, was competing in the end -of-season event for a record 13th time, and he said the physical demands of top level tennis had changed a lot in his time in the game.

"The ball's faster, guys are stronger, the movement is much more violent. This means the potential for more injuries," he said.

"As the athleticism of the game improves, maybe there has to be some adjustments that make it possible for guys to go 100% all season.

"Somebody or something has to truly represent the better interest of the sport."

Andre was ok going into this match. It's not like he was going injured into this match, you know.

Not surprising as he did exactly the same thing last time he's in TMC Shanghai 2002.

Yes I remember that and I was pissed off at him back then too for doing it.

That may be true, just find ridiculous the cynical use of that word by the poster above and wanted to share my opinion with him again ;)

Seeing as your opinion is of no interest to me whatsoever I couldn't care either way.

Andre was ok going into this match. It's not like he was going injured into this match, you know.

That is exactly what annoys me- if it was a genuine injury which occurs during a match, nothing can be done about that and I wouldn't have had any qualms about it. However, this is not the first time Andre pulls off such a stunt and it reeks of "oh, screw this, I lost so let's not put any more effort, rest and get ready for Australia".

Relieved to know, that can only be a good thing.

I think his decision is wise.
He has the problem with his unkle, and it's hard to
move such a sticky surface.
I want to see him as long as possible as a top
tennis player.
