I agree with a lot of what you guys say..
- Quarterfinal of each Grand Slam (i.e. second week?)
- Win a TMS event (Canada! :P Nah, any of them would be awesome :))
- Beat Federer :D
- Finish the year in the top 5

Those are my hopes. If we're talking about extreme(r?) hopes, I'd love it if he won the Australian Open.. :)

What's wrong with beating them all the time? He needs to, if he wants to win more titles, especially those Masters thingys and the small matter of the GSs. I'd love nothing more than for him to pull a Federer on Hewitt (and, dare I say, on Federer himself :tape: )and over-turn that awful current head-to-head records. And he needs to constantly win against Safin to maintain his positive head-to-head record...

I’d really like to see Andy start playing with a more defined style of play. I mean versatility is great, but lately Andy’s been just looking confused, like he doesn’t quite know what he’s suppose to be doing and what tactics and skills he should be using.

Also, I'm tired of Andy winning matches commandingly (when he actually does this  ) and still having the score be 6-4, 7-6. For 2006 I want to see Andy break serves and give bagels.

Deb why are you sad? His volleys and backhand are much better now than they were 2 years ago and he hasn't lost his power. He has all the peices, he just needs to put everything together. And honestly putting it all together should be the easier part. :D

Andy needs to go back to brute power. It almost worked against Fed at wimbldon 2 years ago and if could have added volleys, a backhand, and service return to that he would have been unstoppable.

I think he really need to strategize -- i.e., look at Cincy this year. He's had much success mixing things up, moving up to the net more against players like Ferrero and Hewitt. And then comes Andy's "wall", Federer, it made him nervous and it all went wrong from then on...

That said, he lets a lot of little things dictate his confidence. I mean, that win against Ferrero @ Cincy - it reminds me a lot of the young, fresh-on-the-scene Andy. Really, Cincy is probably one of the most exciting tourney, Andy-wise, this year (barring the Finals)...

Like I've posted before, sometimes, Andy tends to focus on the wrong details. For a while during the grass/summer hardcourts season, he seems to be very particular about getting a high 1st serve percentage in, but it comes at the expense of the "effectiveness" of the serve. At times, it just looked like he "dare not" take the risk as much as he used to. I'm not sure if it's down to his confidence or whatever...

My guess is that Andy going to seek some alternative coaching in 06'. I know Dean brings in some side supplemental guys here and there which is good. Dean has really helped Andy with his ROS, backhand and vollies...now Andy needs a guy to work with him on strategy and sports psyche.

Another suggestion for Andy in 2006: quit wasting your energy yelling at the chair ump between changeovers. Learn to let it go. You're not 18 anymore. The frat-boy insults is no longer cute and entertaining. Time to grow up, accept it, and turn your attention to your opponent.

I think he needs to keep some of that, McEnroe did that his whole career and we all know he was sucessful. It's Andy changing parts of his game that worry me, like hitting more spinny, serve and volley when he gets tight, etc. Andy basically needs to find his confidence so he can hit 100mph forehand winners to break serve & 120mph second serve aces on the line on bps. Cuz, that's the Andy who's game I have always loved and tried to emulate. Not the Andy who plays percentage and waits for the other guy to f-up. :)

I agree with you Fumus. I want Andy to start bringing back a little more power in his game also. Please Andy, hire a sport psychologist.

That could help :)

Ooh, something else. More doubles! Maybe not every tournament, but it definately wouldn't hurt to play a bit more doubles (four doubles matches this year, Andy?) It would help his game, chiefly his net game, which would improve his singles game. And he proved in Madrid, with Blake, (Bloddick!) that he can play doubles. A win over Johansson/Mirnyi? Not too shabby if I do say so myself (This made more sense when I thought they had beaten Llodra/Santoro, but that's who they lost to )

To sum up that brick, doubles = good. And who knows, maybe it'll fortify his mental in some strange way.

OK, it has taken a few arduous weeks without sleep, but I have finally arrived at the perfect plan for Andy in 2006. I think the guy should take it easy on his body, relax a bit so he's in top condition for his events.

Andy's Complete Schedule for 2006

Kooyong Classic
U.S. Claycourt Championships
Newport (U.S. Grasscourt Championships)
U.S. Open
2 Texas Exhibitions with Elton John and Dr. Phil

That's all your important surfaces, 2 different continents, and he won't have to deal with irritating languages like British and French!

This way Andy can spend the rest of his time focusing on what's really important right now, getting his bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics. :)

I personally feel that the U.S. Open isn't demanding enough for a person of Roddick's ability and that he should probably play the Penn Pilot Tournament the week before just to show his commitment to the game. Plus nobody can can than criticize Andy because while everyone else is relaxing and preparing for the U.S. Open, Roddick is bashing away with qualifiers and other low ranked players.

Roddick will probably only show up at the USO for the appearance fee. He'll be out in the first round, a "tough" straight setter.

He is more likely to get an apperance fee at the Pilot Penn tournament than a grand slam. Or he can always play the SAP Open in San Jose and therefore have a long year off. ;)

I think with a little ivy, Andy could take down Roger in Kooyong. Andy is just itching for the opportunity. ;)

It would be the most earth-shattering upset since Fernando Gonzalez took down Mariano Puerta, Masters Cup 2005.

I hope so too, TGS. I think the whole year was a rude wake-up call for him. I can't believe he started the year off with a bad meltdown at AO and ended the year with a bizarre first-round defeat at USO. Yes, ok, he somewhat redeemed himself at the Paris indoors, but his performances at slams and masters hasn't been very Roddick-like.

Nadal and Safin at this point are somewhat questionable for AO, and even if they do play they'll be really rusty. And we don't know how well Roger's foot has healed (although I guess we'll find out when he plays the two warm-up events). And Lletyon is lacking match play as well. I think Andy has a real shot at AO this year. If he keeps his head screwed on straight and doesn't have a meltdown like he did last year. :o

What a Lazy bastard! :mad:I like that he doesn't play official tourneys. Kooyong is fine, he gets 3 matches in against good opponents, gets to be in Melbourne practicing a ton at the AO venue, and gets a week longer off-season for better preparation. Sounds good to me.

i totally agree!
the kooyong tournament is really good for andy - a round robin event against top players sounds really good to me.
i dont really see the point in playing the sydney event when you can be in melbourne and can train at Melbourne Park.

i hope d&d really rip him into shape in hawaii

Nadal and Safin at this point are somewhat questionable for AO, and even if they do play they'll be really rusty. And we don't know how well Roger's foot has healed (although I guess we'll find out when he plays the two warm-up events). And Lletyon is lacking match play as well. I think Andy has a real shot at AO this year. If he keeps his head screwed on straight and doesn't have a meltdown like he did last year. :o
I have to agree that Andy has a good chance this year depending on his health and the other competitors health. A lot of players will be nursing injuries from last year.

Lets hope he doesn't go a day before. ;)well the past two years there have been lots of pics of him practicing at Melbourne Park during Kooyong. so this is one time I'm not actually worried about it :p

yeh im sure he will practise there a lot. he's not (entirely) stupid and realises that due to injuries he's got a good shot @ winning it so i think he'll do everything he can to do well. i spose playing kooyong is practise in itself because the centre court there is exactly the same as the ones @ the AO. and practising on RLA would be good for him because it's shut off from patrons (except staff... yay!!) during qualies so he can get some good, uninterrupted practise in.

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE AO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was on the front page of Andy's website:

Roddick plans more risk, seeks more rewards ahead
December 26th, 2005 04:25 pm

No more wimpy returns on second serve, Andy Roddick promised.

Is this really something you'd put on the front page of your website? I guess the headline is fine, but why put out there on your front page for eveyone to see, one of your supposed weaknesses?

I think the headline is supposed to be humorous for the most part. But some of his losses in 2005 did have to do with wimpy second serves, like when he fell to Ginepri in Indianapolis. You could see his confidence just disappear at those moments.

I wish people would just get off of his back about,"When are you going to win another Grand Slam?" The margins of victory in pro tennis are very slim even when you don't count other variables, its not like he can just decide to win one.

I'm as proud of his two Wimby runner up trophies as I am of his US Open crown. Andy knows tennis :)
