Suggestion for Suicide Shanghai

Tangy, I have a suggestion for a Suicide Game for the Masters Cup. You could allow the participants to pick a given player twice. For example, considering the 2004 Masters Cup, an ideal schedule of picks would be:

Day 1 - Monday, November 15
(1)R Federer (SUI) d (8)G Gaudio (ARG) 61 76(4)
Pick: Federer

Day 2 - Tuesday, November 16
(3)L Hewitt (AUS) d (5)C Moya (ESP) 67(5) 62 64
(4)M Safin (RUS) d (6)G Coria (ARG) 61 64
(2)A Roddick (USA) d (7)T Henman (GBR) 75 76(6)
Pick: Safin

Day 3 - Wednesday, November 17
(5)C Moya (ESP) d (8)G Gaudio (ARG) 63 64
(1)R Federer (SUI) d (3)L Hewitt (AUS) 63 64
Pick: Moya

Day 4 - Thursday, November 18
(7)T Henman (GBR) d (6)G Coria (ARG) 62 62
(2)A Roddick (USA) d (4)M Safin (RUS) 76(7) 76(4)
(1)R Federer (SUI) d (5)C Moya (ESP) 63 36 63
Pick: Henman

Day 5 - Friday, November 19
(3)L Hewitt (AUS) d (8)G Gaudio (ARG) 62 61
(2)A Roddick (USA) d (6)G Coria (ARG) 76(4) 63
(4)M Safin (RUS) d (7)T Henman 62 76(2)
Pick: Roddick

Day 6 - Saturday, November 20
(3)L Hewitt (AUS) d (2)A Roddick 63 62
(1)R Federer (SUI) d (4)M Safin 63 76(18)
Pick: Hewitt

Day 7 - Sunday, November 21
(1)R Federer (SUI) d (3)L Hewitt 63 62
Pick: Federer

So, in this case, the player I chose to pick twice was Federer, hence I won.

What do you think?

Shotgun, great minds think alike  This is exactly what I was thinking of doing for suicide Shanghai. Do you think it will work? I was going to put a template together based on last year's masters cup but what you posted here seems to work fine, too. Thank you :worship:

Cool I was wondering how it was gonna work, if at all. Sounds/looks great :yeah:

I think it will work fine! It's not gonna be easy, since the participants will have less options to pick each day, but on the other hand I think that on the TMC usually happen less upsets than on other tournaments. It's gonna be fun!

Just to clarify: you were suggesting that people be allowed to pick ONE player twice, right? Because if we allowed people to pick multiple players twice that would be a nightmare and everybody would probably end up winning.

According to the Masters Cup site, they usually play 2 singles matches and 2 doubles matches every day. The Shanghai stadium has a cover so we don't have to worry about rain delays this year so that will make the picking easier, I think.

2003/Houston 8-16 November; Surface: Hard (outdoor)
Red Group: Andy Roddick, Guillermo Coria, Rainer Schuettler, Carlos Moya.
Blue Group: Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, David Nalbandian.

Round Robin:
D Nalbandian (ARG) d JC Ferrero (ESP) 63 61
R Federer (SUI) d A Agassi (USA) 67(3) 63 76(7)
Pick: Nalbandian

R. Schuettler (GER) d G Coria (ARG) 63 46 62
A Roddick (USA) d C Moya (ESP) 62 36 63
Pick: Roddick

R Federer (SUI) d D Nalbandian (ARG) 63 60
A Agassi (USA) d JC Ferrero 26 63 64
Pick: Agassi

R Schuettler (GER) d A Roddick (USA) 46 76(4) 76(3)
G Coria (ARG) d C Moya (ESP) 62 63
Pick: Coria

A Agassi (USA) d D Nalbandian (ARG) 76(10) 36 64
R Federer (SUI) d JC Ferrero (ESP) 63 61
Pick: Agassi

C Moya (ESP) d R Schuettler (GER) 75 64
A Roddick (USA) d G Coria (ARG) 63 67(3) 63
Pick: Roddick

Semifinals:
A Agassi (USA) d R Schuettler (GER) 57 60 64
R Federer (SUI) d A Roddick (USA) 76(2) 62
Pick: Federer

Singles Final:
R Federer (SUI) d A Agassi (USA) 63 60 64
Pick: I'm out

This wouldn't have worked in 2003 because Agassi and Federer played on the same day three times so nobody would've won that year.

But with most of the top players out and Federer looking iffy, this year's Cup has "upset" and "surprise winner" written all over it so maybe picking a winner every day won't be easy as it seems.

2005 / Shanghai, China -- November 13 - Surface: Hard (Indoor)
Red Group: Roger Federer, Guillermo Coria, Ivan Ljubicic, David Nalbandian
Gold Group: Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Nikolay Davydenko, Gaston Gaudio

Suggestion: What about allowing people to pick TWO players twice? Or would that make it too easy again?

No, you're totally right. As you showed taking the 2003 TMC as example, we don't even know if it would be actually possible to have a winner if the participants were allowed to pick only one player twice. So the best solution would be to allow them to pick 2 players twice. And it's NOT gonna be too easy, first because, as you already stated, the upsets in this particular TMC are more expected to happen, and second, because the risk involved in this type of tournament is much bigger than in a normal one - the participants will have to choose one out of only two matches each day, so if an upset happens, assuming that the picks are equally divided between the 2 matches, 50% of the participants are out.

Looks good to me! :yeah: Seems to make logical sense too :)

Good idea, because in Shanghai, Masters Cup begin in Sunday, so we have 8 days.

Tangy, didnīt you like my suggestion for the game?

You pick a player and if he actually arrives in Shanghai you get to pick again.

Clearly, my game would have been perfectly workable, and a very difficult challenge.

On second thoughts, this format would have been too difficult. Nobody could have got beyond day 2.
