From the choices given, I hope Nole and Marcos get their first titles. Sexy Radek is due for one soon too. I can't think of any "others" at the moment. :p

Baghdatis and Murray will take a title for sure. Djokovic has the possibilities, but it's maybe one year too early.

by the way, I am very curious about Kristof Vliegen's results in 2006. If he can be consistent and injury free, he maybe can surprise the world and probably himself and take a title. (already managed to get to the final of Adelaide 2003, semi-final of Barcelona 2004, in 2005 he beat Monfils, Djokovic and Coria and almost Malisse... Not too bad, but IMO he can do better ;) )

Yeah, I'm biased... but Jurgen and/or Jarkko are getting to that 'it's now or never' stage. They've had good times and bad this year, and I only have room for one alexander Popp amongst my favourites. Here's hoping they can get the monkey off their back :yeah:

It's about time for Nieminen to win a title, if Murray continues with the improvement I can see him winning a title.

As for personal favourites I'd like to see Horna, Baghdatis, Seppi, Djokovic or Niemienen win a title, that will probably mean they won't.

I've voted for Djokovic, Nieminen, Stepanek and Murray.

Nieminen and Stepanek are well overdue for a title and I am suprised they haven't achieved one yet. Djokovic might pop up with one somewhere and I think Murray will get one somewhere along the line next year too (unfortunately :()

I'd like to think Murray but I somehow think he will struggle a little next year, but certainly reach the odd SF.

Stepanek surely must win one...he is long overdue really.
Hanecu and Wawrinka are good for the lesser clay tournies.
Nieminen could win a lesser hard court one, as could Muller.

I don't think any of the others will appear in a final next year.

If I had to place money on any of them- I would say Murray. This kid has the talent and more importantly, the mindset to win a tourny in my opinion.

But I also think that Djokovic could do so as well.

I would love for Radek to win one- he is not my favorite by any means- but I respect his ability on court. I like Jarko (sp?) and think when he is on he could really win one.

Two others that I would love to win one are Gilles and Marcos. Gilles- when his game is 100%- I love it. He really can thread the needle when he is in the zone. But his biggest problem is being in the zone for more than one match at a time. I adore Marcos- think he has the skills- but he can be streaky and his injuries worries me. He is a doll though, with I think about the best charisma in the game- so if he could harness his skill, not make mistakes and stay injury free and win a title I think it would be great for the game.

I voted for Baghdatis and Djokovic not only cos they are among my favs, but because they have a huge potential and taleny and if they improve their fitness and have no injuries they will surely win their maiden title.
Murray also got my vote (I'm not a fan :p ) because he seemed very motivated from what I saw of him this year and why deny it that he's got what it takes to win.

I honestly don't think that Victor Hanescu can win a title becaue of his weaknesses...yeah can play well and get a SF spot or so but I think he can't go any further unless he makes some serious progress this winter.

I don't see Murray winning a title next year. His schedule will be a factor but I don't see him playing in any easy tournaments. If he decided to play in North America, in February, then he might have a good chance but otherwise it's going to be very tough. He'll inevitably try to enter the European tournaments which will have top players. 2007 will be his first title, I think.

No matter the result we will have the 5th member of the 1st title club in Valencia and it comes from that great group known as Other.

Will it be the Superstar Almagro or the weedy Simon?

There were only 6 for the whole of 2005 and already that number has been matches with Bracciali winning Casachallenger, just like Santiago Ventura did in 2004 for his 1st and only title upsetting a huge favourite in the final.

Stani wins his first title in Umag, but that is not the way he would want to win a title by his opponent retiring.

No, it was not Wawrinka's fault, that Djokovic retired.

Sjengster
07-30-2006, 07:48 PM
Well it was in a way, since he tired him out by playing such a hard-fought and gruelling first set; ergo, he has nothing to feel bad about. He's had some three-setters himself this week, against Cilic and Volandri, even if he didn't have to play twice in one day as Djokovic did.

Melzer is another final in Romania and can he not turn into an apple strudel and play his best, his opponent will either be Volandri, who as a poor finals record or Serra who is 2-0 in finals.

Baghdatis makes another final and he plays against Ancic who has been a generous guy in letting Wayne Arthurs (poor), Wesley Moodie (shocking) and Jarkko Nieminen ( good player) in winning their maiden event. Time for Marcos to win a final, though he has lost to Gonzo and Fed in his previous ones.

We had 11 1st title winners for 2006, which was a lot more than in 2005 and 6 of them won on clay, 3 on hardcourts and 2 on indoor hardocurts.

Bracciali winning Casachallenger was the biggest surprise from that group, though Horna and Melzer had the talent, it was surprising that they hadn't won a title before this year.

Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) Auckland Hardcourt
Andy Murray (SCO) San Jose Indoor Hardcourt
Radek Stepanek (CZE) Rotterdam Indoor Hardcourt
Luis Horna (PER) Acapulco Clay
Nicolas Almagro (ESP) Valencia Clay
Daniele Bracciali (ITA) Casablanca Clay
Novak Djokovic (SRB) Amersfoort Clay
Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) Umag Clay
Jürgen Melzer (AUT) Bucharest Clay
Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) Beijing Hardcourt
Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) Mumbai Hardcourt

I wonder how many of these would be classified as fluke wins? I mean, is Bracciali really going to win another title, ever? I guess we'll see next year. ;)

The first-time clay title winners depresses me. Whatever happened to the glory days of Ferrero, Coria, and Gaudio? They could've cleaned up where Rafa wasn't playing.

Probably only Bracciali, but Casachallenger is famous for its strange results and there has usually been a spread of first time clay winners over time. When there are 2 clay events on at the same time and at the smaller events one tends to be significantly stronger than the other, then it's not surprising at all.

Berdych won his first title on clay in Palermo and Andreev won his first career title in Valencia last year.

Going through the list.

Horna when fit and focused is definitely good enough to win a few clay titles, it was just surprising that it took as long as it did.

Almagro is at his best on the surface and he won it as a qualifier and wasn't having injury problems and those 2 months before RG were very good for him, the question for him wasn't whether he is talented or not and he will win more titles on the surface.

Djokovic made the RG quarters can play well on all surfaces and won his title without losing a set defeating Massu in the final, not a fluke.

Wawrinka former RG junior champ and clay is his best surface, the circumstances in which he won weren't the best, but

Melzer can play on all surfaces, but has a horrible tendency to choke in finals and big matches and was lucky he played Volandri in his final and Bucharest is the breakthrough ground for 1st title and unseeded winners.

Tursunov, Baghdatis, Murray, Stepanek and Nieminen well they aren't gimps and their title wins weren't flukey. Thunder Lips and Nieminen it was overdue and this is Tursunov's first full season without injuries.
