Guillermo Coria and Nikolay Davydenko qualify for the Masters Cup in Shanghai on Thursday, leaving only one spot open in the season-ending showcase. Both made the elite eight-player field starting on 13 November when Australian Open champion Marat Safin pulled out due to a recurring knee injury.

The 2004 Roland Garros runner-up qualified for the year-end championships for the third time while the Russian will be playing it for the first time.

World number one Roger Federer, French Open champion Rafael Nadal, world No3 Andy Roddick, Australian Lleyton Hewitt and 35-year-old Andre Agassi are other qualifiers for the Masters Cup.

Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic and Sweden's Thomas Johansson are the leading contenders for the final spots.

Follow Live coverage of the Paris Masters throughout the week for the remaining two spots.

Well done Kolya :worship: He always seems to go unnoticed "under the radar", - but he has had a great season and he deserves this.

it's down to ivan and gaudio (and ferrer and robredo with an outisde, almost impossible, shot)

if ginepri beats gaudio, ivan is in almost for sure

Coria will go 0-3 again this year.

Geez....Coria might be in the group with Roddick and Ljubicic (assuming that Roddick and Ljubicic end up in the same half).

As of this posting, Davydenko has not qualified yet. If Davydenko loses in the quarterfinal to Stepanek, and both Gaudio and Ljubicic make the final (regardless of who wins the title), then both Gaudio and Ljubicic qualify instead of Davydenko.

Well done Guillermo Coria, he is a great player and deserves to go to Shanghai. I hope Nikolai makes it also, as we need a Russian instead of Marat.

Other qualification scenarios:

Robredo - must win the title AND Gaudio must not make the semis.

Ferrer - must win the title AND Ljubicic must not make the semis.

Gaudio - (a) win the title = qualifies regardless; OR (b) runner-up AND Ljubicic must not win the title (i.e. loses in the semis or earlier); OR (c) semi-finalist AND Ljubicic loses his quarterfinal AND Ferrer must not win the title

Ljubicic - (a) win the title = qualifies regardless; OR (b) runner-up AND Gaudio must not win the title (i.e. loses in the semis or earlier); OR (c) semi-finalist AND Gaudio loses in semifinal or earlier; OR (d) quarter-finalist AND Gaudio loses in quarter-final AND Ferrer/Robredo do not win the title

Davydenko - (a) Semi-finals or better = automatic qualification; OR (b) quarter-finalist AND both Ljubicic AND Gaudio must not make the final.

If he qualifies that's what i'll think too despite not really liking his game. The guy is great. ;)

Nope. Even if Davydenko loses and the final is Ljubicic v Gaudio, Nikolay will qualify. Here's the math:

Davydenko 393 + 25 = 418 pts
Ljubicic 346 + 100 = 446 pts
Gaudio 345 + 70 = 415 pts
or
Gaudio 345 + 100 = 445 pts
Ljubicic 346 + 70 = 416 pts

In either case, at least one of them will not catch Nikolay so he's guaranteed to finish in the top 8.

Ooops, you're right. So that leaves one final spot left. Given that Gaudio beat Ginepri to make the quarterfinal, it'll be a two-horse race between them. I can't see Robredo or Ferrer winning the title.

so we'll just have to wait and see, who's gonna get the last one;Ljubicic or Gaudio ..
hate to say this, but Coria 's chances to improve his results there are :o
Davydenko, is moving on quietly but steadily..
