Hello !
Nicolas is my favorite player... He has a real good backhand even if it is not its best stroke ! He's a true striker... It's a real pleasure to see him playing. Moreover, he's likeable !! :p

(if you are interested, I have a lot of pictures and videos of Nico at Monte Carlo... Videos like "ball of match" or things like that)
TO answer at your question, no, Nico didn't have many chances in the first set. He was really dominated, and in the first set he was at 1/4 then 2/5 ! The egalisation was miraculous I think.
But also, all the public was with Potito Starace, I was the only to encourgae Nico, without exageration, so it is difficult in its conditions... I think he abandoned the second set... He wasn't so entousiast as usual... 6/2 is too hard, he didn't play his tennis, I think. He said not, but I think it is wrong...

From the tournament's website :Mahut : "Je n'ai pas envie de m'arrêter là"

Oui, je me sens bien.

Mahut : "I want to go further"

Nicolas, how do you feel after beating the N2 seed?
I felt very good actually. I am very happy of the way I led my match. But that's only the first one, I need to stay focused.

Why did you win today?
I think that playing the qualifications has been a benefit for me. I was "warm". While Ljubicic lost forces in his last Cup Davis' weekend. I started also very well the match, i volleyed well and I managed to stay ahead.

You seem to be in really good shape by that time...
Yes. I beat a top ten player, that's good. Now I want to go far in the tournament.

How do you like the public here?
As I said, Marseille is my favourite tournament. I have a great feeling with the public, the crowd is really enthusiastic, it often supports French players, which isn't not always the case elsewhere. I really enjoy to play here.

What's your objective this season? The top 60?
Why not, could be fine! I'm in a very good period, I need to repeat that kind of performance, to be consistent. I am on the good way.

Interview with Mahut from sports.fr

Mahut: "Plein d'espoir"

http://www.sports.fr/fr/images/200751/mahut_bercy_small.jpg

From the interview, it's about Nico's forms in 2007, his participation in French Davis Cup Meeting & his expectations for 2008, right? Please tell me more if I miss any important or interesting points. Thank you so much!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and all tennis fans here. :):):)

P.S. Glad that you like Nico's photos that I posted. The photos may be nice but the real Nico's much nicer!!!

Nico has fans but also makes know that he is also fan... of Valérie Bègue, the new Miss France  !

Hum, and to speak about tennis, at this moment he is at Chennai.
Thanks for the interview, however, the first source is AOL ;)

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY

(Dada, thanks for all your mails and photos, that I will put on his blog : I can't answer before, lack of time : exams...)

A little resume
( sorry not answer before !)

- He resumes his year , his season 2007 , he's quite satisfied but he wanted to win a tournament so ... It's a beautiful year for him ( in the 50th players ) He has a lot of hope
- They told him about the fact he has been adopted by the audience and the guys who comment
- He really likes Wilbly ( we already know that stuff )
- He's now trainig with Guillaume Peyre , everything is good , he's happy to work with this man
He worked a lot with his physic ( during 5 weeks )
- They asked him about Wilander and Santoro in the Largadère team.About Wilander Nico thinks it's a good thing because of his exprerience of player and trainer.About Fabrice he's okay with him , he's got a big experience too and gives many advices to everyone
- He went to a meeting with others french players and Christian Bimes in order to talk about the Davis Cup.He doesn't really know how it works because it was his first time.
Davis Cup is something very important for Nicolas , a dream
- Then they talk about Julien Benneteau...
- His 2008 program : Chennai ( India ) Sydney , Melbourne ...

( Sorry my english is not really good !)

It helps clarify many things I haven't known before.
Hope Nico can play better & better and finally be a part of Davis Team

Before that, his first stop is Hewitt at Sydney.
Tough draw but hope Nico do his best. Pray for him.

He was leaving the practice courts and no one else knew who he was. We made eye-contact but I didn't say hi. :o :smash:

Thanks VolandriFan for your sharing. I absolutely agree that that Nico is so much cute in person. I think it's something about his personality that's attractive ... :) Love him. :hearts:

My experience during Thailand Open teaches me not to afraid or awkward of asking players for what you want but just do it politely & properly. For Nico, he's reachable, friendly & kind. If you talk to him or ask for any favour, he'll just respond to them with his happy face - I think he loves being with fans! :)

So next time you meet Nico, just grab him & take some photos to show us. :) Or if possible, ask him for a hug or a kiss (on a cheek :o), I don't think he'll refuse. And that's what I call properly!

Therer are actually so many stories...He was so mean to all the staff during the tournament, no smile, no "hello, no "thank u", one day my boss and i were watching a video they've shown on local tv, about the tournament...we were watching it on internet, but we put it about 2-3 times in a row because we were always interrupted by players who wanted something....Julien was in the office, reading newpaper...and he said in a reallly shitty way "ok now, how many times are u gonna watch this?" i was !!!
And all this happen in 2005...before he became famous, before the 1/4 final in Roland garros...I can't imagine how he is now....

He was practicing with Nico. Most of the players are nice, then i dont know about the top ranked players (i work for a challenger)...but most of them are nice and if not it's just because they are nervous about their match or just not in a good mood....but i truly think Julien is the most hated player!!!! Thanks lucindia & VolandriFan for such clear & inside info. you are sharing. I already knew from that thread that there's something not so good about Julien :( but I don't know how to react since I've liked him for a couple of years and he's been Nico's close friend & doubles partners for quite a long time. It's great to see them play well together and go far in tournaments but I'm afraid it'll increase Julien's arrogance as well?

I agree that most of French players seem to be arrogant but somehow they are also funny, lovely & crazy, which make them quite charming & attractive (to me). Julien just lacks of those funny & friendly parts. :( I don't think he will easily change his behaviour but hope he finally realize & improve, even a bit will be good for fans and himself! :awww:

Nico considers Julien as a brother... They are absolutely not different, but they are, on the contrary, absolutely the same... Julien is a great friend in Nico's family also.

So please, don't say this kind of things in this topic...

And, yes, I wan understand that Nico is kind, and handsome, but this thread was created for his tennis, and not for love declarations ! It is a little bit ... bad to read several persons here !

Sorry for that, and to answer, Nico's bag is a "bag of tiebreak", with dominos inside. It is a present from his brothers and sister, during Christmas, because Nico used to lose his tie breaks...

Nico is more than a tennisman for me, he is a friend, so yes, thanks, I talk with him for other kind of things that for autographes ! And I know exactly what he thinks about Julien... I know what Julien could have do for him in bad moments. You only see them like tennismen. Julien on a court or in a tournament is not the real Julien, as sure. Julien is a good person, you don't have to speak like that about him, and I suppose Nico will be very sad to see that in a topic consacred to him !You say that Julien is arrogant, so I take Safin for example : he breaks rackets, insults people on the court... I think that if Julien say "how many times do you want to see this video?", it is not very bad !!! You know nothing about him, absolutely nothing ! So you don't have to judge him like that, if Nico loves him like a brother, there is maybe reason that you don't know, that's all... You don't know Julien, you don't have to insult him, to diffame him. If you know him, you could cry to read lines like that, because he is a WONDERFUL person, despite his competitor behaviour a little bit impulsive ! You are absolutely injust, and this topic is not Nico's one because on Nico's one anyone could be speak about Julien like that !!!!! Try with Nico, tell him what you think about his heart brother, and you will see if he will be so kind as usual ! Who do you think you are to judge people that you don't know ?! It's abject !

woohoo ok ok calm down....I dont say Julien is bad with Nico...I know he loves him and Julien is good with Nico...I dont judge Julien on a tennis court or as a friend...i judge him of what i saw and what i've heard from people who work with him every day, it's not about how he is with fans but with people he doesnt know...there's a minimum restricted...I wont change my mind, im not here to make people change their mind...I just give my point of view of what i experienced...Maybe, yes i shouldnt have given my point of view here...i'm sorry if i offended u...but no need to make a drama...I've just said i dont like him, people ask me why...that's all
PS : i was right, using Marat to getting on my nerves was defenietly useless...there were no real arguments....

Sorry for that, and to answer, Nico's bag is a "bag of tiebreak", with dominos inside. It is a present from his brothers and sister, during Christmas, because Nico used to lose his tie breaks...

Thanks a lot! :) That's why Nico looks so happy when talking about it. He has such a great (& fun) family support!

And sorry if I express too much feelings in some replies. Of course, my first impression of Nico was his exciting style of play not his appearance. But after I learn more & more about him, I just can't help talking about other things. :o Sorry if that's too obvious & causes an uncomfortable situation. :awww:

Sorry for Julien's issue as well. I admit that I feel not so good about his manner towards some people but that's what I, as a general fan, can see & perceive. I haven't had a chance to know another Julien who is modest & caring but now I know. Anyway, no matter how I feel about him, I'll still watch his matches & wish him luck because he's Nico's close friend and partners and that is more important. :)

Just want to explain for my part & hope you understand. :)
I'll keep quiet :tape: if it can bring back the old happy feeling to this thread.

P.S. Congrats to Nico & Julien for their 1st round win today.

SUMMARY of this =>http://video.eurosport.fr/tennis/open-d-australie/2008/video_vid61674.shtml

- Nico is really happy ( he won his match against Acasuso )there was a lot of wind so it wasn't easy at all , he's satisfied even if he doens't condidered the match as " good "
He thinks he stayed agressive during the match
- He worked especially the physical work this winter ( with all his team ).He makes a twinkle to all the team ( Lagardère and his coach ) because it's his firth victory in 5 sets
He's happy :p ( for the 4th time )
- The ground : he has no problem , his tennis fit good with the surface , it's more quickly but all the players don't seem to be satisfied so they've got to find a comprimis
- About Davydenko : he probably talked with Mika ( Llodra ) in order to have informations. He felt very good. He had a rest on monday evening and tuesday => 100% for his 2nd round

[ he looks aound him and the journalist makes it jump ]
- The Christmas presents : he took these to Australia. We have the tie-break bag by his brother : inside there are dominos with scores like 8/6 , 7/2 , 7/0, 7/5 ... His bro' considered Nico lost too many tie-break last year so he made it with his daughters
Nicolas uses it more like a good-luck object. He thinks it works for his 1rst match ,and keeps it in his bag.

Voilà !

Merci beaucoup, EmmA! You're always kind. :worship:
The summary is very informative and fun to read! :) I still like the part where Nico told about his Christmas Present (Tie-Break Bag) - it's so lovely. Unluckily, he didn't have a chance to use it against Davydenko. :p

By the way, Nico's new coach is Guillaume Peyre, right? I saw a glimpse of him in Bercy & read about it somewhere but not so sure. I used to meet him here with Baggy & Camille in 2006 and he's nice & kind of good-tempered. Hope he can work well with Nico & bring something special out of him little by little and go stronger. :)

Finally, hope Nico & Julien do well today against The Bryans. It's tough to meet No.1 this early but best luck for them! :wavey:

To get back where you started this topic... I saw him at KGHM Polish Indoors Open Challenger in Wroclaw this year. I like his attitude towards tennis, the guy always has a smiling face (does he ever get angry?)- at least that's what I notcied. And he's soooooo tall! Besides it's a real shame he hasn't won any ATP tournament so far, Mahut is a very talented player, but maybe I'm too impatient...? Anyway, I hope he will show much at Queen's and Wimbledon. Cheers!

I was just listening to his interview on the Eurosport website, it's pretty nice. He explains how everything was decided with Richard (pretty fast, as usual with the Team Lagardère), says that if he were in Richard's situation, he would have liked to be given a hand too, that's the idea of the Team for him.
He means the conditions should be faster than the other years, the balls aren't so heavy anymore in his opinion.
The match against Robredo in Rome helped him to realize that his style of game is very annoying for claycourters, actually, more than a guy who also plays from the baseline. He feels in a different state of mind on clay this year, sounds quite confident.
He has a small bet on Paulo for RG.
Etc., I don't remember everything:
http://video.eurosport.fr/tennis/roland-garros/2008/mahut-confiant_vid73432/video.shtml

Truc

And when Eysseric is asked in his ES interview about a French player who might do well in RG this year, he answers something like: "Well, I know it's not his best surface, but I adore Nicolas Mahut and I would love him to accomplish a little feat here"!

I haven't posted my Hamburg pics of the doubles with Paulo here, btw. They all look the same, but never mind.
Nico is actually growing on me after having watched him a little bit at tournaments lately. Always all smile, seems to get along well with everybody... He was also very nice with Paulo in that doubles match against Melo-Sa (who were annoying as hell -> the Frenchies looked really pissed to lose to them).

I know this is very late, but I feel that I need to address your post. While you're right, we don't know any of theses players personally as friends or family, but we are still under jurisdiction to judge their personalities based on public displays. Of course these guys might act entirely differently in everyday situations, but I think that a "good" person would treat everybody the same, regardless of who they were. Acting arrogantly around fans and tournament organizers implies that Julien feels superior to them and reserves the right to treat them as badly as he desires without consequence.

It would be so easy for a public figure to completely detach his public and private life, treating just his loved ones well and disregarding everyone else. Not only would that make Julien arrogant/rude, it would also make him insincere.

He says about his great match against Tipsy that it was about time for him to win a match, even if he felt all the time that he was actually playing well and that he was going to win again at some point.
The interruption was fatal for him yesterday, he made a silly mistake, didn’t eat during the rain break and when the match resumed. So after the TB, he relaxed too much and was hungry at the same time, felt sluggish, was broken and since Roddick was serving better and better (at 220-230 km/h, 10 aces in the 3rd set), it was over for him.
“But I could feel my game is there. Since I’m not in the main draw of Cincy, I will take one week off. And I hope that the problems which have been bothering me off the court will be solved quickly. I don’t want to tell more about it because I’m afraid to be clumsy and pick the wrong words.” Clearly the fact that he’s been sharing his coach with Gasquet for 2 months now weighs heavy on him.

I was waiting for a comment like that already for some time. It must be akward for Mahut, reminds me of the Mathieu/Champion/Monfils-story earlier this year.

But unfortunately for him, it is a lose-lose situation, if Peyre succeeds in making Richard improve, and the signs look promising, Lagardère will decide and I don't hesitate for a second about the outcome.

Truc

I know, and I imagine Richard doesn't feel very comfortable himself. I can't believe they can't find better solutions than these "binômes" which are never going to work with the top players, frankly.
But according to L'Equipe today, Champion will probably now coach Eysseric, so Eysseric's coach Olivier Soulès could work again with Nico (he was already his coach before he started coaching Eysseric).

The Frenchies love playing musical chairs, but the Team Lagardère is taking it to a new dimension...

I really hope that they can get this coaching situation sorted because it really doesn't seem to be helping Nico. I agree about it feeling too much like the Paulo/Monfils situation and I don't like it when these things happen because inevitably one side (player) usually suffers.

I hope Nico feels better soon and transfers that into better days on court. :)
