:wavey:

Road to the Australian Open 2006.
Andy should play 1 Tournament before the Australian Open:yeah:
He could play Sydney or Adelaide or if he feels good, both.

There are still 2 1/2 months till the Australian Open, not so long to go.

What do you think, will Andy come with a better build body there?
I hope so!

I think he might play a few Challenger events before the end of the year, but he will still have many weeks where he can go home and relax. Hopefully he takes this time to work on his fitness. It would be great if we saw him at the Aus Open physically stronger, and able to go the distance in tough matches.

pesto

Can it be worth him playing Challengers? That's not the sort of opponent he wants to be playing, and he's got his ranking into a comfortable zone for most ATP events now. Surely he should get some rest and then take stock and do some training to get into shape for Oz.

He is already entered in the Bratislava Challenger, starting the week after next, and only the 7th highest seed in it! However, I am hearing rumours that he may pull out of this Challenger and take the rest of the year off.

Actually now I am hearing/reading that Murray will return to Dunblane for the Winter and get ready for the Aus Open.

How far do you guys think he can get in the first Grand Slam of 06? He has no points to defend, so if he can make it to something like the 3rd or 4th round then he can make a big jump up the rankings.

I want him to be a top 50 player as soon as possible so that he can automatically qualify for the masters tournaments.

ClaycourtaZzZz.
10-29-2005, 07:52 PM
It's too early to say....

It's one of the very fisrt tournaments of the year, he can play crap or he can cause an upset and get to the QF perhaps:shrug:

We'll see after 2-4 matches in 2006:)

With a ranking ~ 70, he'll get into Indian Wells and Miami, with their 96 draws, won't he? Lots of points available there too.

As he has so few points to defend, he must have a good chance of improving his ranking enough to get into the clay court Masters, if he keeps up his recent form.

Andy's heading to Auckland (yay!)

From the NZ Herald site...

Tennis: Murray to play in Heineken (yay!)

08.11.05

It looks like Heineken Open tennis officials have secured another major draw card for January's tournament. Rising Scottish star Andy Murray has told British tennis media he will play in Auckland ahead of the Australian Open.

The full tournament field will be confirmed at the end of the month.

Murray's confirmation is a big boost to the tournament which has already secured four top 20 ranked players.

The 18-year-old has risen to 66 in the rankings in his first year on tour and is billed as the next great British hope.

As a child, he survived the Dunblane Massacre in 1996 where 16 people were shot dead at his primary school

Adelaide and Auckland is a good choice, Auckland he chose over Sydney, and Auckland's field is weaker so it's a better chance of winning a first title.

Murray to open against qualifier

Andy Murray will open his 2006 campaign against a qualifier at the Adelaide International, with Lleyton Hewitt a possible quarter-final opponent.
The 18-year-old Scot is preparing to make his competive debut in Australia as he looks for a strong start to 2006.

"My goal is to reach the top 20 by the end of the year so I'm hoping to do well early in the season and at the Masters tournaments," he said.

Murray finished last year as the world number 64 and British number three.

And on his first ever visit to Australia, he admits that the conditions will take some getting used to.

"I've been practising in South Africa where it was 25 degrees and now I've come here and yesterday was like the hottest day in ten years for me," he said.

Murray will take on a qualifier in the first round, with Agustin Calleri or Tomas Berdych waiting in round two and potentially Hewitt in the last eight.

"The qualifiers are supposedly the weakest in the draw but they've already got three matches under their belt and got used to the hot weather," he said.

"This is a very tough tournament and I'll have to win many matches before there is a chance of playing Hewitt."

Beating Berdych today could be one of his best results. He was the last person to beat him as tomas hasn't lost a match since! I feel confident he can do it. He knew he would beat lorenzi, he just thought it would be easier than it turned out to be. He said afterwards he played about "three out of ten", but he expected to be able to beat him at one! As Andy said he will need and eight or nine effort, but i feel he can do it. I think tomas is overrated. Come on Andy!

So good to have tennis back; can't wait for the aussie open!!!

I think our Auckland crowd was quite amused by Andy's opening match... it was pretty entertainning. The crowd did laugh at his comment - well, the ones that heard it did (I didn't actually hear it and t wasn't until I read it here I realised that must've been what they were laughing about). I agree, Andy is pretty comfortable playing against guys who serve and volley, just ask Taylor Dent  I think the match will depend how Andy serves, I'm confident he can break Ancic but he hasn't been serving well recently, he'll need to improve his first serve % and then I think he can win.

Yep Andy will play tuesday, probably on one of the minor show courts. Will be a late night for all fans, with some luck it might be shown on eurosport or the bbc interactive stream.

Chela is a very winnable match, would be diassappointed in Andy if he couldn't rise to the challenge and beat him. Even standing present form Hewitt would not be an opponent he could have chosen. Still he he can beat Chela his match against hewitt is almost certain to be the big evening match on the main court. Would be a nice occasion for Andy to beat his first top 10 opponent. It is true that if somehow he could make round 3 (and don't discount the possibility hewitt might not make it that far!) then the draw really does open right up, all the way to the semi-final and a meeting with federer.

If only it could happen!!! Good luck Andy in round one; but i don't think he will need it.

WoW Andy goes down 6-1 6-3 6-3. I saw the last bit of the match and Andy looked pissed. His returns were kind of weak and he was being super defensive. I'm just super shocked at the score line. I really thought Andy would get through this one.

Awwww in Andy's post match interview he said that he's really feeling the pressure from the media. I also read that the interview ended "abruptly". I just hope he realizes that his real fans like him win or lose.

Oh Andy ):

That wasn't a great performance. His groundshots were all over the place, either long or into the net. There were some flashes of the Andy we know and love, towards the end when he worked some great rallies, finishing well. But it was a case of too little, too late

He could've pushed Chela a bit more on a better day. :(

A big disappointment, he didn't play well at all. We all have days like that but most are not so public!

With a bit of luck it will damp down the hype a little and give him time to develop. He has talent, but cannot be expected to win against higher-ranked players every time.
