He's the #1 alternate for Paris qualifying now.. he just needs to qualify, win a few matches and it should be doable.

How much points has Nole to defend?

Is Paris his last tournament this year?

i didn't know he had a lot points to defend for the end of the season. i hope he can play the australian open without qualifying!

Novak will have at least 462 points at the end of the year. Currently 462 points would put you in 91st place. That would be by far enough to make the Australian main draw.

The last direct entry last year @the AO was Davide Sanguinetti. He was ranked #110 at the time and had only 399 entry ranking points. Six weeks before the AO (Dec 6, 2004) 462 points would put you in 89th place.

There remain the unlikely possibilities that:
A) there will be tons of injury protected players in the top 90 area

or

B) a dozen or so players ranked just below Novak will play lots of challengers between now and the date the Australian Open main draw list is made (Dec. 5) and might pass Novak's 462 point mark.

Since I've hi-jacked this thread for my own purposes here's a thought to warm Jess up during the off-season.

In the first four months of next season--January to April--Novak has only 83 of his 400+ points to defend. That will give him lots of time to build his ranking.

And remember, Gasquet started this year outside the top 100 and look where he is now.
