I already thought a longer time about opening such a thread, because we have it in the Swedes forum (ok, not very active atm ;) ) and in some others as well, but as we are such a great community here in the Nando forum (from my point of view the best on whole MTF) it would be great to get to know how it looks like where you all live :) And when Nathy posted about the languages in Switzerland, I was thinking again how nice it would be to see pics where everyone lives and I decided to create this thread directly :)

Of course you can also post pics of fave holiday destinations or whatever places you like ;)

So I will start .... here are some pics from my hometown Hamburg including the lake Alster, the harbour, Speicherstadt and the famous church "Michel"

Birte, mucho good idea! :yeah:

I doubt there are pics of the place where I live (the flemish country ;) ) so I will post some pics of Bruges, the biggest city near my home, and Ghent, where I spend most of my time during the academic year.

http://www.mykreeve.net/bruges/bruges.jpg

This is the "Markt" in Bruges, kind of the centre:

These are scenes in Ghent:

This is "gravensteen", a medieval castle in Ghent:

Good idea Birte! Freya, what is the name of the city where you live? You told me near Brugge but....there's lots near Brugge!

Well, I live in Vlaardingen, not far From Rotterdam. Here are some boring pics

This is our flag
http://home.online.no/~vlaenen/vlaggen/nl-vlaar.gif

our symbol is the herring (don't ask me why... ) Maybe we could start making sürströming here Birte :scared: :bolt:

City hall (old one, people only get married here now)

the harbour:

I think this is the highest building in our city centre:

it's all pretty boring...I was born here... (not in that building of course....;))

no, but I heard stories... it's forbidding to open it in flats  and you should never open the can in your kitchen. it's advised to do it outside. my parents tried it once and they said it was horrible, absolutely yuck. they brought another can home from Sweden again :scared:

I have tried something which is a bit less :bolt:, but it's still yuck. it's called hakarl or something. it's Icelandic rotten shark bits which are soaked in ammonia... you can imagine.

back to topic?lol

Hi Becky! :wavey: [Maybe this is the time to tell you all to call me Hanna. Why did I never think of that? ;)]

I live in Leverkusen, an industrial town in the West of Germany, best known for its football team (Bayer 04 Leverkusen) and the Bayer factory. It's not really a beautiful place but it has its moments. ;) Probably the best thing is that it only takes 20 minutes to drive to Cologne which is a much more exciting town with ultimately better shops. :D

A map first ...
http://www.plz-postleitzahl.de/land.nordrhein-westfalen/leverkusen/karte-Leverkusen.gif

This is an overview of some part of the city, dominated by the factories.
http://www.leverkusen.com/guide/Archiv1.jpg/43/watu009.jpg

The main precinct "Wiesdorfer Platz" - nothing there, not even people.
http://www.leverkusen.com/guide/Archiv1.jpg/43/weih9803.jpg

Our town hall, unfortunately not the ugliest building in town at all.
http://www.leverkusen.com/guide/Archiv1.jpg/43/rathaus3.jpg

The Bayer main office building when it was dressed like a pack of Aspirin.
http://www.leverkusen.com/guide/Archiv1.jpg/43/aspiri24.jpg

Our emblem and the main landmark, the Bayer cross.
http://www.leverkusen.de/medien/sonklein/150Wappenlev.jpg http://www.leverkusen.de/stadtportrait/sehenswertes/150Bayerkreuz2.jpg

And to come to the beautiful part of it: This is the street where I live. It's on the very outskirts of the town, when I look out of my window I see horses grazing, so ultimately I love living here. :)
http://www.leverkusen.com/guide/Archiv1.jpg/19/imbach02.jpg

It's all very "Bayer" here, we even have a "Bayer department store".

Not that spectacular, but very nice and quite as well :)
The 3rd pic is again the Alster (taken by myself)

@Nathy: You told me some time ago how to post pics directly in the text...I guess you can only do it when the pic is somewhere online, or? Cos I don´t have my own pics in an online album

Places I like and I'd like to visit again

1st. Napoli, South Italy

As you may know I am half Italian and I am from Naples (Napoli in Italian). Went only twice there but maybe later I'll move there, I am thinking of it. Last time I was there was last August and here are some pics. First Napoli itself and then The Amalfitan Coast, well-known for its beaches and its clear blue water

1st. JAPAN (esp. Shikoku Island)

I am a fan of this country as well as Ireland :worship: The smaller island is also the wilder one, meaning beautiful green ladscapes and areas, I really want to go there at once.

I took a walk today round my neighbourhood, and I had my camera with me so I could take some pictures to show you what it looks like here in Imbach, the part of Leverkusen where I live.

These are the meadows that are right behind my street; you can even see a few horses on the hill.

The church and a couple of shops on the main road on the border of Imbach.

These are the outdoor courts of the tennis division of the local sports club Neukirchener Turnverein. I only ever see old men play there, what a shame!

This is a picture from last winter (I wanted to show you a snow picture, too. ;)). It's the view from my bedroom window.

And here are some pictures of an old temporary home of mine: Limerick, Ireland. I studied there for a semester nearly three years ago. Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures; it was the pre-digital age for me.

1 is one of the main streets in the city center, O'Connell Street. Not pretty, eh?
2 is "my" pub, the Stables. It looks much nicer on the inside and it was on campus so that the prices were moderate and there were always lots of internations students there.
3 is King John's Castle in Limerick.
4 is the view when you turn your back on the castle.
5 is Holy Trinity Church in Cork.
6 is Kilmurry Village, the student village where I lived.
7 is the river Shannon as seen from the campus; I passed by there every day and it was so beautiful in autumn.
8 is the Shannon again. I love water in almost any form, be it sea, lake, river ...

Ireland :hearts: :worship: Lovely church and nice student buildings :) Is that where your nickname comes from (siobhan is Irish) ?

Yep, it's an Irish or at least Celtic name and I have a thing for the Irish. :) I started to learn the language when I was there but it's ever so difficult and the spelling often doesn't give you one clue as to how to pronounce a word. And of course, as I never have the opportunity to use my (limited) knowledge of the language, I've forgotten almost everything by now.

@Sjoukje: I have a similar picture of me in Mallorca standing next to a pineapple like that, but I've no idea where it is. It's funny!

@Kasia: Niiice pictures of Finland! It's quite high on my "places to visit" list, too.

I think I'll show you some pictures of some of my favourite places too soon. :)

I have an English-Irish dictionary, too  I still remember some phrases, but that's all, and I know some pronunciation rules - like 'bh' is pronounce like 'v' so that's why 'siobhan' is like 'shi-vawn' - but that's it.

And yeah, I need tons of money too to go to all the places I want to see, like Canada, Australia, South Africa, Argentina ... and there's still all those places in Europe I haven't seen yet! I guess I'll never run out of destinations to visit. :D

Edit: Yes, Bastad looks really nice! I've been to Sweden once and I really liked it, too. Can't remember the name of the place, though ... It was a little village in the middle of nowhere by a beautiful (and very cold) lake.

Here are some pictures of my favourite holiday places. Since I'm no longer travelling with my parents I have never visited one place twice, but when we used to go on holiday with the family when I was kid, we most often either went to Greece and Turkey or Switzerland and France. My parents were both teachers so they had 6 weeks off in summer too, so we often went for three or sometimes even four weeks. Those were the days ...

This is a picture of Beatenberg in Switzerland.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a214/amhras/holiday%20places/beatenberg.jpg

These are pictures from St. Rémy in the south of France and the Roman arc in Glanum nearby. St. Rémy is the place I visited most, about 7 or 8 times.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a214/amhras/holiday%20places/Glanum.jpg

The arena in Arles where we went a couple of times. They don't kill the bulls there, otherwise we wouldn't have gone there.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a214/amhras/holiday%20places/arlesarena.jpg

This is the mosque Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. We had friends living in Istanbul so I was there a lot too.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a214/amhras/holiday%20places/hagiasofia.jpg

Now these pictures I took myself when I was in Portugal when I was 15. We travelled around the country for a month with a youth group and it was fantastic. I'd love to go back there some time.

oooh nice idea! :yeah:

when i have more time i will post some stuff here!

lol ok i'm about a year late posting these but anyway..

here are a few pics of the wonderfully interesting (not) city of Perth, Australia...you guys might know it because we have a little exhibition tournament here called the Hopman Cup, but apart from that it's pretty boring lol

the first few pics i pinched from the web

there are also some nice pics here http://www.trekearth.com/search.php?offset=1&phrase=perth&type=photos ...but doesn't look like i can post them here, so you can go to the site yourself

i've also attached some of my own pics that i've taken around the area i live in (i had to resize them a bit)..

1. view of the river and across the river you can see a white building which is the resort where the HC is played...it's about 5 min from my apartment

2. same as above...the part of the river leading into the cove

3. the cove area

4. cove area again with view of skyline in the back

5. cove area from the other side

6. this is not really that close to where i live anymore (about 20 min away) but it's one of the main beaches here...Scarborough Beach...and you can see the Indian Ocean :)

next time i'll post some pics of my other "home" city of Valencia, Spain where I lived in 2004 (and plan to live again next year) and also some other random holiday pics
