The big prize is to make it on the Letterman show? Hahaha.
Paris Hilton is practically a weekly guest on there.

R.Federer
09-11-2005, 05:57 PM
I watched about 10 days or 2 weeks ago. John Macenroe was a guest
Letterman says "I remember I used to follow tennis so closely... you, nastase, etc. Now I dont know who are these people who are playing. There is one hot russian babe that much I know"

Then Macenroe says "You gotta see this guy Roger Federer. He is perhaps the best tennis player I have ever seen". Letterman's face: draws blank

Letterman : "Our next guest is a player who surprised everyone by winning the US Open, against the odds. You may not have heard of him, but he must be good if he can beat andre agassi. [Crowd Boo] Maybe we will hear of him again. His name is er.. Roger.. Fed.. Federer"

Get your act going, Dave!!!!

Are we sure it's tonight? The Late Show isn't usually on Sundays. Usually, the winner will appear on Monday's show. That would be 9/12.

R.Federer
09-11-2005, 06:42 PM
OH GOOD POINT
I will change the date

You are correct of course, but on the lateshow site already today it says "TONIGHT"
They mean Monday

David Letterman, competes against jay leno (perhaps you havent heard of him either) for late night talk shows. they rake in the biggest names, and enormous TV audiences. Even tickets to their shows are very difficult to get

Believe me, this is not a bad media appearance to make. A lot of exposure. Roge has said that he "...wonders what it would be like to appear on Tonigth Show or Saturday night live". well here is his chance if he wants

Roger's appearance on Charlie Rose's show last year after the Open was really good - Charlie was well-informed. Somehow I don't think Letterman is going to do the same quality interview.

Oh I forgot, Roger was on JMac's show last year too - i think about 20 people wound up seeing it ;)

Charlie Rose is brilliant and he is humble, let Roge show his own knowledge and insights about the game. Roge came off exceedingly well inthat interview. So mature and honestly, quite deep.

David Letterman, opposite.
His job is to entertain the audience. He will ask probably Roge, what do you think of Maria Sharapova? You have a crush on her? Do you have own cows in Basel? Etc.

And oh yes, I was one of those who watch Roge on Mcenroe last year, very good, funny, I taped it also. "I love you very much ring", I remember

I don't know that letterman show but I guess it must be a typical late night show with humoristic/entertaining purpose, no? I wouldn't expect such a high quality interview in that connection.
I saw Roger on BBC's Extra Time a while ago. I thought that was a good interview. :)

Do you by any chance know the song they used to sing on Conan O'brien whenever they would have a really strong guy come in as a joke to boost the ratings and everyone would just keep staring at one another. I can't remember what the song was but I liked it.

I wish Rog was on Charlie Rose again this yr & let AA have Letterman. AA deserves tremendous recognition for the way he played NYO. Vastly better than he has all yr & 5-setters w/his bad back, age...Jesus...Heroic Performance & It should be celebrated. This who gives a shit about anyone but the winner is so disgusting......Not to mention that if AA had ended up w/the trophy it was 'cuz Roger lost it...The Impt. point was for AA to play as well as he could. He played a helluva lot better than he did v. Pete in Pete's last final.

So, Congratulations Andre!! Your performance here throughout the tournament will Live Forever.

Its better this way, Dr Phil can be on hand to give him some advice on how to be you know, mentally stronger, because like we know it, Roge needs that ;)

If I remember correctly, Dr. Phil is a tennis fan too.

If the interview is like Blake's, it will be borrrrrrrrrinnggggggg.

And being 2nd guest after Dr. Phil is a lot better than Blake. He's after Jennifer Lopez and she acted exactly like typical dumb-blonde-bimbo. (even though she's not blonde) :p

CBS has the right to show USO and during USO, CBS showed highlights after Letterman's show every night. And probably that's the reason the champions are/were on Letterman's instead of Jay Leno's show.

everyone in america knows who dr. phil is for the same reason that everyone knows who jerry springer, ricky lake or someone like that is, because he has a daytime show which often involves people exposing embarassing things about their lives on national tv. the average person sitting around at home during the day is highly likely to watch something like that. that and knowing oprah has never hurt anyone's popularity. ;)

Excuse me, shut the fuck up with "that's American." Dr. Phil is a very knowlegable person and someone that is very talented and yes, Americans do know who Dr. Phil is and rightly so. First segment had Roger looking a bit nervous at first, but he got comfortable after a few minutes. He told a story about how he was playing Marat in Rome, and both guys were throwing around their racquets so much is was turning into who could throw their racquets farther, and after he watched the highlights of that match, realizing he had to change his ways and calm down on court.

The second segment was kinda tame, basically he asked Roger what he was doing the rest of the year, I could tell Dave was kinda shocked to find out Roger is going to fly back and forth from Switzerland to Asia twice in the fall. Lame joke...after Roger left, Dave said, "You know what Roger Federer told me? He said if he wins another U.S. Open, he's going to add another -er to his name."
:p

At least Letterman did his hw, because it sounds like he had no clue who Feds was when JMac was on the show. Well...he did have the cheatsheet on his desk...

SM1, where are you posting from?

BTW, anyone remember when Safin was on the show (I missed it). Only took OAF 1 Slam to get there :p

He may be handsome, but his Bond Girl doesn't really cut it ;) (It's ok, because we should all love her anyway)
I almost would bet that this relationship is doomed, only because celebs rarely stay with the ones that they were with prior to fame. Latest example: Lance Armstrong.

Excuse me, shut the fuck up with "that's American." Dr. Phil is a very knowlegable person and someone that is very talented and yes, Americans do know who Dr. Phil is and rightly so. But to call him a useless American and say "that's American for you." Well, I know one thing you are is an ass. I certainly won't insult anyone's country. Every nation has the positives and the negatives.
I am sorry if what I said offend you but I really don't mean to insult America. It is still my honest opinion that Dr. Phil has no talent whatsoever. I know since I actuallly watched his show a couple of time and honestly, I think it's crap. But he did make it to the top in America. I think it's fascinating. There are a lot of thing about America that I don't agree with but I still think it's a great country. My dad is actually living in New York state. So there you go. It's just my opinion.

I live in Maryland...

It totally sounded like he memorized a bunch of info before Roger came on. I remember the Marat interview...one memorable part was Marat telling Dave how to pronounce his name...that took a few minutes.

David traditionally has the USO winners on the day after the finals, unless it it is a repeat that night. Last year- the week after the USO was a week of repeats for Letterman, otherwise I think Roger would have been on in 2004.

The 2000 intervierw with Safin was one of the best I have seen Dave do with an athlete. Safin was Safin- and got big laughs when he said that he wanted to fill the trophy with vodka or something to that sort. Good times.

I thought Roger did pretty well. He was nervous but got less so as the interview wore on. Seemed bright and looked very good in his suit- ha cha cha! He fared a lot better than some athletes who have English as their first language (Johnny Damon- looking at you!) so I thought he did well.

Latest example: Lance Armstrong. That doesn't mean it will happen with Roger. He's been famous for quite a while now and they're still together. To me Roger's gf almost seems kind of motherly, making sure his life is in order and everything is taken care of. In fact I think it was the NY Observer that referred to her as "matronly" and Roger as "sexually wholesome" (whatever they meant by that).

I think that I am the only one here who likes Dr. Phil. He is amusing. His wife does a good job picking out his clothes. He does actually know what he is talking about, and while as of late his show has been horrible, he does have some knowledge in the noggin somewhere. He has written some decent books before, you know.
He is a cool guy.

I know people can be so ignorant, but it's not their fault. Tennis is still very much considered a club sport for the elite. It just really cant compete with the mainstream sports, i,e,. baseball, basketball and football sadly enough in the US.

I watched the interview this morning...tivoed it last night. Roger looked great...he seemed to get more comfortable as the interview went on. He showed his personality and that's what counts. I'm surprised he got two segments -that was fantastic!! Letterman was easy on him and gave him a lot of praise...even the audience clapped and agreed with Letterman when he said that he's probably the best ever...that meant the audience has some tennis knowledge and knows Roger could be the best ever...that surprised me a lot.

She's spending his money right now anyway and he doesn't seem to care. Maybe he actually enjoys spending money on her and treating her nice, because as he recently said in an interview she does everything around the world to make him happy. This was the exact quote:

Here is my transcription. Not perfect, but got all of it:

Clip of Roge on MatchPoint.
Thank you very much. Our next guest won his second consecutive US Open Grand Slam. Please welcome your 2005 tennis champion [show clip holding trophy] Roger Federer, ladies and gentlemen.

Welcome to the program. Congratulations you have an amazing career, you are 24 years old is that correct? and tennis we know you have to start very early how young were you when you start?

As soon as I could hold a rqcket since I could hold a racket, 2 -3 year old

Your folks play tennis?
Uhm, a little bit. You know on weekend, they would go grill sausages :) and i would run around on soccer fields and play tennis against
the wall.

You're from Switzerland, is that correct, so why did you not play soccer as game of choice instead of tennis?

I played everything you know, everything, table tennis, I liked racket sports, especially ball sports, I was always very coordinated Then at 12 years old I had to make a choice you know soccer or tennis.

And did it get to a point where you were knocking balls against the doors and drivig your folks crazy? Knocking tennis balls against the house or whatever you did?

Oh yes that happened too (audience laugh), against the grandmother's garage door, the cupboard of my parents and my sister's. My parents and sister were sometimes a little angry I think but I think they understood

Oh yeah, I'm sure they "get it" now huh?
(Laughs) Yeah they get it now (audience laughs).

Just a tremendous career and people of course are now falling all over themselves to say likely, nyou could likely become the greatest player of all time (BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE CUTS OFF DAVID; Roger makes "I dont know" face :) ). Now, now that would make me nervous if people were saying that about me, .. Why do they say this about you? . Lets see, you have accomplished, you have won 6 grand slams thats a great accomplishment, Pete Sampras won what was it 14? So you still have a great chance of surprassing that. What about this notion about being the greatest of all time, what doese this do to you ?

Well I was always considered I was one of the bigger talents, I was here you know for instance in USO Junior in 1998 in the final. So I was number 1 junior in the world and they always said could have great future. But never to this point did i think i could dominate the sport, you know, then now last 2-3 years I have been in the driver's seat winning 6 out of 10 GS, its been very dominant and all of a sudden they start saying greatest ever. Im still far away, I dont know, my career is only half way

John was here a few weeks ago before tournament and he said you could be the greatest ever, and he alluded to it and if you are getting praise from someone like John Macenroe there must be something going on here!!
(Audience laugh)

Roge laugh: Yeah.... John....

You also had some er, behavior problems no with your game early on no?
Yes, we were quite similar and. ... now we are suddenly so different!

What would you do when you were playing a match? You would lose your temper?
Yeah I was very bad. I wish you couldhave some footage because I was pretty good at throwing rackets, comments every point, I dont know, Iust couldn't help myself.

It ws anger was directed towards yourself?
Yes, towards my self never towards fans or umpires. But there was one time I played Marat Safin, he was also a winner here few years ago, about my age and has also had a very good career so far. He is also knows for his temper and breaking rackets. One time in Rome, we did all this crazy stuff, throwing rackets and after the match I go to the locker room and they show the highlights of the match and that was just basically showing you know who is throwing racket better (audience laugh). At that poit I thought this is not why I am on the court. It was close, 7-6 in the third and I won but at this moment I said I have to change.

When you saw your behavior that was a changing point?
Yeaah, it was embarrassing for me to be on center court. Sometimse you get booed you know, they dont like to see, sometimes they want to see. I can! (show temper) but I have to pay fines and I have no mood to do that. (laughter)

What was it like, playing agasinst Andre Agassi, because I think he was a sentimental favorite in the final certainly... did you sense that?
Ha, yes, a little bit (audience laugh) No, I thought the crowd would be behind him you know, but maybe not THAT much (laugh) but the way he made it to Finale, playing those incredible matches, beating Blake 76 in the fifth, it is an incredible accomplishment. For me this is the most memorbabl one, you know he is the one of the last living legends still playing in the game.

And do you see yourself playing 10 years from now?
It is causing us problems, you know!! We thought we could retire at 31 32 now, its 35, 35. We will see... (audience appreciate)

And in tennis there is no off season, is that right, you basicaly play 12 months. What are you doing now?
Yes, the season is from January-November, only one month off, you can have 2 weeks vacation, 2.5 weeks prepararation, or that is my schedule anyway.
Now I am going back to Switzerland we have some tourmanetes there, then Asia, then coming back for indoor championships, then we have world championship in Shanghai where I am also the defending champion so I hope I can do it again.

When you are in Switzerland, are people talking about me?
(Roge a bit unexpected question) Er, Yeah! [laughter]

Have you heard anything?
Er, we dont have CBS so not that much.

My name doenst really come up??
Dont worry... they know you!

Could you mention me when you're there?
Oh yeah, sure. Sports show, talk show?

Just you know, at dinner!
Sure! [laughter]

[David Lettermann pulls out Roge trophy]

This is the loveliest trophy in all of sports. The USO champion 2005. And you name goes right below... your name, from last year. So you win Wimbledon thee times, USO consecutive twice and Australian Open.

Yes, last year.

Congratulations, have a great career. Roger Federer, ladies and gentlemen.

Thankyou.

Funny sometimes. And sometimes I think he tries too hard to be funny. And he often talks too much and interrupts guest's talking.

I don't have a chance to see the Federer interview. Anyone can provide a script would be appreciated. :worship:

I still remember the Marat one in 2000 in which Letterman asks marat if he drinks and Marat jokes that he drinks vodka in the breakfast, lunch and dinner. And when Marat agrees with Letterman that he should listen to his mom's advice, Letterman said, 'tell her about the vodka'. :D

Oh one more thing.

After Roge leave the show, Letterman said "You know what Roge told me? If he keeps winning likethis, he will add another "ER" to his name"

Then the musician asks what does that mean?

Letterman says "Well, he has one "ER" in RogER, and two in FedERER" and he will become FedERERER if he continues to win like this"

For so many reasons the comparison between Roger Federer and Lance Armstrong doesn't hold water. How an individual reacts to celebrity status has a lot to do with their culture, their families, their values, their upbringing. For starters, Lance is American and Roger is Swiss.

Letterman is a huge fan of tennis and knows the sport very well. His "awe shucks" stuff is part of his schtick. I don't recall seeing him at the USO this year but I have several times in the past.

Any posters around here remember what happened to Dave when Steffi Graf make appearances on his show after her USO sweeps? He went totally bonkers over her. He became all figgidity and goofy.

What makes you think Mirka is spending "Roger's" money? She's employed by him. She earns a living. Perhaps she's spending her money and perhaps Roger showers her with gifts from time to time. Why assume she is spending "his" money?Well in that Vogue article it said he pays her a small salary (not sure what they consider small), and his mother said he spoiles her. So maybe she's not spending his money per se, but he's spending it on her. Or maybe the salary he pays her is more than enough to buy designer clothes, sunglasses, jewlery, ect. Who knows. Either way I don't think there's anything wrong with it. And I'm certainly not concerned that she's going to take his money and run.

didn't see it obviously (being based in the UK) but didn't Rog appear on there last year when he won over Hewitt in the final? SO why goes he still not know who he is? You know when Rog first took over the No.1 spot from Roddick and turned up at the US Open 2004, one of the security guards demanded to see his ID as he had no idea who he was! Can you believe it.

As for Mirka, hey you know she should get paid a fair whack for being his PA - he must have loads of requests she has to deal with. And of course she lives with him so he loves her and will buy her stuff. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure she supports him and loves him in return which can be greater than anything monetary. However I do think he should cut down on the pie allowance!
