Serving for the set is tough. How often does this happen on both the men's and women's sides? Also, it's hard when you have a losing record to a Champion (1-5 now).

James' game has really upgraded from the time I saw him play Federer in 2003 USO. He'll be back.

However, if he'd won this year's USO, he'd be breaking the 21 Rule.

besides the fact that the word "champion" is a discretionary term, since when does it matter that someone has a losing record against another person?

The Bangladesh cricket team had never beaten Australia, yet they did so this year.

Likewise, Xavier Malisse has a deplorable record against Tommy Haas, but he beat Tommy from a set down in their last encounter.

James won't win a slam ever, but I think the effects of this tournament will be much more positive for his career than negative. He's always been a bit chokey, he always will be, but he's also played the best tennis of his life this week.

Moore and sure don't quite rhyme in my accent, but it's a good effort none the less.

This reminds me of the time that Sjengster rhymed Haas and grass, and I was like... uh? Then he pointed out that in his accent they rhyme. This isn't quite as extreme as that, mind you.

It's just his "I play tennis with my eyebrows raised in a very odd angle" face. Some players have very nice "tennis faces". Kiefer for example. His face is never contorted in some bizarro way. But Tommy... I don't know how he does it.

Ah! Agassi he can water into wine, he can cure global warming, world hunger, end the growing income inequality, find the cure for cancer and AIDS. Agassi will solve the Middle East crisis, he will manage to reign in the oil crisis, through his own charisma he'll able to improve global literacy to 99% in the developing world, provide palatable drinking water to poorer regions.

I think it's safe to say that with his performance at this USO, James Blake has shown that he means business. He raised his game to another level. Even though he lost to Andre, he's got to be proud of how well he did here this year.

Congrats, James on a GREAT U.S. Open.

For the record, I think Jame's effort was outstanding against a proved long-time champion of the sport. Agassi is never going to give a game up so for him to come back from 2 sets down is really quite understandable.... James lost in a 5th set tiebreak - the most cruel rule ever. I guess we'll never really know the result that could have been.

I don't think Blake lost due to choking, Agassi took the oppotunity to attack and push him around. Blake blew Agassi away for 2 and half sets, but eventually he showed some fatigue in the 3rd set, when Agassi raised his level and went toe to toe with Blake. In the 4th set I thought Blake should have pulled a Safin 2004 AO SF to give away the set after 1st break. But he hesitated doing that and Agassi didn't help by tempting Blake with plenty oppotunities to break back. But it was apparent even though Blake did break back in 4th set he didn't have enough energy to hold onto his own serve. In 5th set Blake actually surprised me by showing some reserve energy level, but it was just a little short. In 5th set even Agassi showed signs of fatigue for a moment. But he is in amazing physical condition considering his 5-set stuggle with Malisse 2 days ago.

All in all it's a great match and Blake didn't choke it away. But it's a pity he didn't give the 4th set away and concentrate on the 5th. I think it would have given him a better chance yesterday.

Averages, people! Sheesh.

An average is a measure of central tendency in a population but it is wrong to use the average as a threshold (i.e. "rule") The rule is as valid as saying that the evarage height in population being 185cm, implies that the next born baby will turn up taller than 185cm. (Or, equivalently, the next slam winner will be less than 21 years of age)

You can't create a rule out of averages if there are 23940384 exceptions. There becomes a point at which something stops being the "exception that proves the rule" and becomes "proof that the rule is folly".

It's an interesting stat that you found... it's your insistence on calling it a "rule" and applying it where it has no place that makes the entire thing :retard:

This match was nowhere close to the choking level of Paul-Henri Mathieu. From the bits I saw it looked like a hard fought battle but at no time did James hand the match to Andre.
